The fundamental natural ingredient of any mining development is an ore reserve. The classical definition of an ore reserve has both technical and commercial components, each involving elements of risk. By definition the desposit must contain mineral values which are "extractable at a profit". Metallurgy supplies a vital link between these two basic requirements of a successful mining project; the metallurgical input establishes the process by which the contained minerals may be recovered and converted into marketable product(s).

Under humid conditions geochemical exploration for rare-metals is, at the reconnaissance level,usually carried out by stream sediment and soil sampling. As the secondary dispersion patterns are distinctly different in arid environ- ments, other exploration methods have to be applied (MATHEIS & KOSTER, 1985).

The rare earths market is relatively small and slow growing. Three applications using mainly cerics rare earths : catalysts, glass-ceramics and metallurgy are volume market. Inside this slow moving frame, fast growing niches can be found lamp phosphors, permanent magnets, fine cera- mics... There is no specific ore for one given element, and the natural occurence of any ele- ment is almost constant in both monazite and basnaesite. This creates the "balance problem" that consists in the best compromise between shortage and over production. The general trend of prices is downward in constant money. Despite this difficult environment (price decrease, technology changes, etc...) lots of company have always been attrac- ted by the rare earth business.

The extension of theoretical and laboratory studies of the roasting of tantalite and cassiterite concentrates from Greenbushes Tin Limited to pilot and semi- commercial plant developments is detailed. A rotary pilot furnace was used to prove the feasibility of the process and a semi- commercial plant was constructed at Greenbushes to produce large quantities of roasted calcine. The additions and conditions of the laboratory study were employed to achieve marketable grades of calcine from the two materials. As well as producing calcines with less than 0.1% Sb, most of the tin in tantalite was recoverable to a separate fume product. Tin fumed during cassiterite roasting on a semi-commerical scale amounted to less than 1% of the tin in feed.

The target quality of the treated water also is discussed. Equipment selections are reviewed and reasons given as to why certain choices were made. The differences between this plant and an ore dressing mill are highlighted. An outline of the operating procedure is included along with a basic flowsheet. Cost estimates are briefly Discussed.

This paper describes the requirements for concrete in this application, the required properties, the mix design, and transportation and placement systems. Within a short time frame of just over two years Wirralie Gold Mine has been developed from a virgin geological discovery to an operating gold mine with a mine life of six years and a production rate of 50,000 oz per annum. Construction work on the 600,000 tpa single stage crushing, two stage milling CIP plant commenced in November 1987 and was completed some seven months later at an overall cost of $A25 million. Since commissioning in May 1988 the treatment plant has exceeded design tonnage, availability and recovery. A second expansion programme in January 1989 will increase plant capacity to one million tonnes per annum with associated bullion production of 80,000 ozs per annum.

Large blast furnaces demand high standards of preparation of feed materials which must meet tight specifications of chemical and physical quality. Measurement of these factors must be expeditious but the nature of the coke, sinter, ores and fluxes and the large tonnages involved requires substantial mechanical sampling plant. The equipment, its operations, and its problems, associated with the 5000 t.p.d. No.5 blast furnace at Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd., Port Kembla, are described and the efficacy of chemical blending achieved in the ore blending yards and sintering operation, is reported.

The curbing of expansion in tertiary level education in Australia and the question- ing of its objectives which are now occurring are likely to have important effects on mining and metallurgical education. Student enrol- ments are low but the serious shortage of specialised minerals industry graduates pre- dicted during the boom of the late 60's has not eventuated. Other manning problems of a less quantitative but possibly equally import- ant kind have been identified. They point to a need for a full and deep review of the education and training programmes available to Australian graduates planning to enter product- ion areas of the minerals industry. An alter- native educational structure providing greater flexibility is suggested.

In the period since 1989 the Yabulu Nickel Refinery of Queensland Nickel has undergone a transformation both in terms of the nickel laterite ore feed and the refined nickel product. These two changes were mutually supporting, as will be shown in the following paper. It had been realised since the early-1980s that the Greenvale orebody would be exhausted by 1992. Consequently planning had been in progress throughout the 1980s for the importation of overseas ore as a replacement for the Greenvale ore. The existence of extensive lateritic ore deposits in New Caledonia and Indonesia made these locations the natural focus of attention. With the three Japanese ferronickel smelters sourcing their nickel garnierite ore feed from these locations it was relatively easy for the miners to supply the overlying limonite ore to Yabulu. This limonite ore was previously discarded as waste. The Yabulu refinery now receives about 85 per cent of its ore from these two overseas sources. The transition from Greenvale ore to imported ore occurred gradually between 1989 and 1993. It was during the ore importation planning stage of the mid 1980s that Queensland Nickel commenced the technical investigation which led to the ammoniacal solvent extraction (ASX) plant installation and the product change from nickel oxide to nickel metal.

Present practice of lead-zinc flotation at North Broken Hill Limited is described and factors influencing plant objectives and performance discussed. Mineralogical examination of final flot- ation products showed mineral liberation to be 94T complete and size by size metal recovery tables indicated a need for finer grinding to improve lead and silver recovery, but coarser grinding to improve zinc recovery. A steady grinding circuit, at constant ball mill power and cyclone overflow pulp density, is found desirable for satisfactory flotation circuit operation because instabil- ity in the grinding circuit inevitably leads to flotation instability and as a consequence less than optimal flotation operation. Remov- al of the variable lead flotation middling product from the grinding circuit decreased grinding instability.

A vehicle-mounted radiation detector interfaced to a microprocessor called PRAM (programmable radioactive analyser mobile) has been developed to provide grade control for selective mining of a soft rock uranium ore. The grade of ore over which the vehicle passes is determined and indicated by several coloured lights to a pegman who walks behind the vehicle. Coloured pegs are then laid out to mark the uranium grade ranges on the floor of the mine pit. Comparison between grade ranges determined by the PRAM and by prior drilling and downhole logging at the Yeelirrie deposit, Western Australia indicate good agreement. Use of the PRAM decreases the cost, manpower and time required to grade extensive areas of a mine pit floor.

The outcome of future metallogenic research will be important to everyone because it will. have a profound impact on our ability to find new deposits of non-reservable mineral resources. Failure to replenish our mineral stocks will threaten man's economic and social well-being, and it is vital that future directions of metallogenic research are considered carefully to ensure that research funds are applied wisely to underwrite our future.Today we are witnessing the declining phase of the era of easy exploration. The rate of discovery of shallow orebodies is slowing. This is very evident for base-metal deposits but is becoming increasingly apparent for gold deposits. The easy exploration era was marked by a heavy reliance on exploration techniques capable of directly detecting mineralization. These include simple prospecting methods as well as a host of geochemical and geophysical procedures and tools that enable explorers to pin-point regions' of mineralization within the upper couple of hundred metres of the Earth's crust. Subsidence issues associated with historic mine workings have highlighted the need for enhanced geotechnical management of the Martha pit over the remaining life. In conjunction with a detailed analysis of pit slope issues a comprehensive geotechnical management plan has been developed at Martha and is being used as the basis for development of similar plans in other Newmont operations.   This paper covers the geotechnical issues facing the Martha operation and the development and application of the management plan.

Running a successful reagent plant trial is not an easy task, especially when trying to achieve an incremental improvement in a highly variable process, such as flotation. Cytec aims to achieve one per cent recovery improvement with 90 per cent statistical confidence. Most concentrators experience large fluctuations in recovery and so the æmagicalÆ one per cent is difficult to detect. With the aid of statistical software, including REFDISTR (proprietary) and ECHIPR, Cytec have developed a unique approach to differentiate between daily operational variation and actual process improvement. This paper describes how Cytec runs a plant trial based on extensive laboratory investigation and detailed analysis of historical plant data using statistical techniques.

The need to prevent the sterilisation of coal stems directly from the fact that it is a non-renewable resource. In N.S.W. a vast amount of coal resource is located under major public utilities such as freeways, railways, stored waters, pipelines carrying gas, water and sewage, and transmission lines. Total extraction has occurred under freeways, transmission lines and pipelines with little or no damage. Where damage has resulted, the cost of restoration was only a small fraction of the value of the coal recovered. However, coal at present is being sterilised and perhaps lost for ever under stored waters and railways. If engineering solutions are available for mining under these improvements economically and with maximum safety, then coal should be extracted and utilised to the benefit of the State.

I wish that in addition to being a Pro- fessional Engineer I was also a communications expert. My principal task this morning, and yours after this meeting, is to convince a wide variety of individuals that steel industry slags are a high quality material that can be used for many purposes; and that their use can significantly alleviate some of the problems facing engineers, public officials, and the general public in our countries. By actual in- place performance over a long period of time steel industry blast furnace slags have proven that they are as good as the best natural aggregates, and better than some, for any type of construction or purpose for which natural aggregates are used. Steel furnace slags have many unique favorable characteristics and prop- erties when compared to other types of aggre- gate even though they cannot be used for all types of construction. We have the facts, all we have to do is present them to the right people in the proper manner.
