A novel method utilizing PIXE with microbeams following fire-assay has been developed to determine PGE and Au at sub-ppm levels suitable for application in exploration. Analyses of the prills from the lead and silver fire-assay yield Pt, Pd and Au concentrations readily. NiS must be used as collector if the complete suite of PGE is required, but this method is not as Convenient.

Petroleum exploration is proceed ing in Western Australia at an ever- increasing pace. Results in recent years have been very successful, with the discovery and development of the Barrow Island oilfield and the Dongara gasfield, and the discovery of several major gas-condensate fields on the Northwest Shelf. The Northwest Shelf discoveries will have a big impact on the economy of the State by providing an abundant indigenous source of energy. Prospects for further large dis- coveries are believed to be excellent. The most prospective areas are thought to be on the continental shelf in the Carnarvon, Browse, Perth, Canning, and Bonaparte Gulf Basins.

Systematic ICPES (Inductively coupled plasma emmission spectrometry) analysis of magnetic concentrates from drainage samples has been used to discriminate concentrates dominated by magnetite from those dominated by pisolites, presumably maghemite-rich. In addition, a set of spurious zinc enhancements was recognised and explained with the help of mineralogical data, and systematically isolated using chromium as a Discriminator.

The Porgera Gold Mine, located in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, has produced over 5 million ounces of Au, since its opening in late 1990. The deposit is located within Upper Cretaceous Papuan Platform sediments approximately 25 km south of the Lagaip Fault, and is spatially and temporally associated with the 6 Ma alkaline Porgera Intrusive Complex.

Deposits of gold, silver and other precious metals often display a high variability of grade values, usually a very low average metal content and are frequently not easy to sample reliably. The characteristics, together with the volatility of precious metal prices, make evaluations of precious metal deposits extremely difficult to make. Geostatistical estimation techniques can be used to make grade estimates of precious metals and to assess the reliability of these estimates. Two case studies are presented.

The low grade Mount Charlotte orebody was first mined with minimum capital expenditure by mechanised cut and fill stoping. The lower block was prepared simultaneously for open stoping by shaft sinking and installing another crusher and services. Similar development for the third block was discouraged by economic factors and reduced tonnage. Decline develop- ment required less capital and opened up ore reserves commensurate with advance, providing flexibility to stop operations without commit- ment: A 1 in 7 decline measuring 4.25m x 5.5m to accommodate standard Euclid 25 tonne dump trucks was developed south of the orebody. A fleet of four trucks average 12 loads each per shift over a haul distance of 700m.

The techniques used in evaluating gold placers and in recovering gold therefrom are briefly reviewed and critically assessed, relative to the estimated and actual recoveries from many operations. The discrepancies between these quantities can be significant and sometimes disturbing. The coefficient of variation for the annual percentage recoveries, relative to the estimates, is in excess of 10 and commonly above 20 . The difficult- ies in evaluating placers are recogni- sed both in the gathering of meaning- ful sample data and in the derivation of estimates. There are deficiencies, perhaps insurmountable at reasonable cost, in the techniques used to derive an estimate and in the gold saving devices usually employed. There is a subconscious trend to use recovery as a check on the estimate. The industry could have extracted more information during the evaluation and working of deposits in order to fully characterise them and in order to quantify metallurgical efficiency. There is a place for other prospecting techniques, particularly geophysical, in placer evaluation and a need for more appropriate and sophisticated

A programme of testing and evaluation has been in progress at Isa Mine for the last four years with the objectives of rationalising ground support practices, improving installation quality and increasing productivity of ground support functions.Numerous innovations have been successfully implemented. These include the introduction of swellex rockbolts as the major form of temporary support, the use of splitset rockbolts as the primary means of support for the hangingwalls of cut and fill stopes and the introduction of dowels with pumped cement for general long term support.The installation of swellex bolts has been successfully mechanised throughout the mine using Tamrock automatic rockbolters and Atlas Copco BUK 11R drilling rigs modified for this purpose.

Operations at two open cut mines have so far commenced on two out of the five potentially mineable seams in the Fair Hill - German Creek Coal Measures. Due to seam splitting, up to seven mining units are present in the Dysart Seam interval at Peak Downs giving a total of 12 mining units in the section. A computer simulation is being developed for in-situ leaching of unbroken, Zn-Pb-Ag sulphide ore. Ferric chloride is the selected reagent. Experimental work showed that a diffusion control model of the kinetic aspects was better than a surface chemical reaction control model. Entrapped reactive grains were accessible to reagent in the samples tested. Precipitated sulphur did not seriously hinder the reaction.

ICI Australia has been developing PC-based software to assist the blast engineer to design and monitor open pit blasts. The scope of this software differs significantly from commercially available mine design packages.The software is designed for routine use in a normal production environment. The heavy medium cyclone plant for the preconcentration of silver-lead-zinc ore prior to grinding and flotation was commissioned in August 1982. This paper details the measures taken to get the plant up to design performance which involved modifications to the medium densifying and slimes clarifying sections. Operating experiences to date are described with emphasis on the low medium consumption recorded and severe wear on process equipment.
