Geological domains describe the mineralisation state and stratigraphic location of different geological regions of mines. They play a very important role at the geological modelling stage as weight percentage of chemical elements information within each geological domain is assumed to be correlated while information coming from different geological domains is considered uncorrelated. Having correct domain assignments to both the chemical assays and the 3D space of modelling is critical for building a reliable geological model of the mine.As standard practice significant effort is invested into the interpretation of the deposit and identification of the geological domains for the chemical assays and the 3D geological space. Despite these efforts, there are some chemical assays with ambiguous geological domain where the exploration assay domain and the block domain do not match. Incorrectly including a sample in the wrong domain can cause a large change in the predicted weight percentage of chemical elements estimation for that block. Therefore, the major challenge of grouping the spatially correlating weight percentage of chemical elements is how to determine which of these domains best fits these misclassified samples.This work proposes machine learning based autonomous technique for identifying to which geological domain (the exploration assay domain or the block domain) the misclassified sample belongs. The proposed methodology is based on Gaussian Process (GP) classification. The GP machine learning approach consists of training and inference stages. At the training stage the GP automatically learns the properties of different geological domains using the chemical assays with unambiguous domain assignment. Then, at the inference stage the GP makes predictions for the geological domains of the assays with ambiguous initial domain assignment.We tested the proposed technique by conducting a case study for an iron ore deposit located in Western Australia. The results demonstrate that the application of the proposed GP technique removes statistically significant deviations in the assay values in many regions: mineralised ore region, unmineralised region, highly weathered region and intrusive material that is highly variable. In this case study the proposed methodology autonomously identified the geological domains for more than 50 per cent of samples which are initially ambiguously classified. The co-mixing of tailings and waste rock involves the intimate blending of tailings and waste rock to create a new material (Co-Mix) with superior physical and hydraulic properties. The new material has a low hydraulic conductivity, low compressibility, high water retaining capacity and high shear strength. Co-mixed tailings and waste rock restrict oxygen entry and water seepage to minimise acid generation and metal leaching. When compacted, Co-Mix materials have low volume change characteristics with respect to total stress and matric suction together with high shear strength. Co-mixed tailings and waste rock may be used to construct cover systems, internal barriers and seals, confinement structures or a full depth waste repository. The theoretical properties of Co-Mix blends are investigated. The results of a laboratory program to characterise the physical and hydraulic properties of co-mixed tailings and waste rock are presented. Various ratios of tailings were blended with different waste rock materials. Hydraulic conductivity tests were conducted at confining pressures ranging between 0 and 400 kPa. The saturated hydraulic conductivity for the Co-Mix materials was found to vary between 4 + 10-5 m/s and 5 + 10-9 m/s depending on blend ratio, waste rock type and confining pressure. These results together with other physical properties show excellent hydraulic and strength characteristics can be achieved for Co-Mix materials.

Pintail Systems, Inc, a Colorado USA based company has developed and commercially applied bioremediation processes for biological detoxification of cyanide compounds in mine waste. Site-specific microorganisms are isolated from spent ore, tailings or process solutions and augmented in the laboratory for cyanide oxidation, denitrification and metal biomineralisation. Biological processes typically treat complex contaminants (cyanide compounds, soluble metals and nitrates) in a fraction of the time of conventional remediation processes. Cyanide is used in microbial metabolic processes as a carbon or a nitrogen source. Biological detoxification processes applied at the end of mine life can end long-term liability and perpetual monitoring and containment. Case studies from commercial application and demonstration programs for the US Environmental Protection Agency will be presented in this paper.

The effect of delay time on fragmentation has been discussed for a long period but rarely in a satisfactory and unbiased way. Despite the efforts of many researchers, delay selection for fragmentation improvement or optimisation remains a controversial issue. Large-scale tests have been plagued with scarcity and scatter of observations, while small-scale tests have been associated with boundary effects and energy losses. Theoretical work is often used to produce explanations for available measurements or tries to simplify wave propagation and wave interaction to guide observation and practical work. The present work analyses results obtained from a relatively large number of small-scale experiments in blocks made of grout, and re-analyses results of previous experiments, to conclude on the effect of delay on fragmentation. It is shown that the main contribution of the delay is found in the fragmentation of the larger fragments of the blast, while the small fractions show almost no effect. Samples, where copper liners were used to inhibit penetration of detonation products in the rock mass, showed effect of delay only when short times were used and steady but poor fragmentation when long delays were used. Based on small-scale experiments, it appears that the fragmentation is optimised when a hole fires prior to the radial cracks, produced by the previous hole, reach the free face of the blast. Gas penetration may result in the development of few more fractures that affect the fragmentation of the largest particles of the blast.CITATION:Katsabanis, P D and Omidi, O, 2015. In designing climate exposed soil structures such as caps and covers over mine waste it is necessary to include the wetting and drying influences of the local climate in order to accurately predict the net water, vapour and oxygen fluxes across the ground surface and through the base of the covers. The most advanced evaporative flux modelling tools currently available to practitioners have been limited to rigorous one-dimensional models (ie SoilCover) or semi-empirical two-dimensional models (ie Hydrus-2D). It is common practice to use the rigorous one-dimensional evaporative flux model results to develop a surface boundary function that can then be applied within a saturated/unsaturated two-dimensional model. However, this is not an ideal situation and results in a further approximation of the real system being modelled. This paper will highlight the use of a new modelling tool, VADOSE/W, which brings existing, rigorously formulated evaporative flux theory into the familiar setting of a two-dimensional model. The model is enhanced for simultaneous two-dimensional oxygen gas transport analysis, which has direct application in the mine waste industry. A key focus of the paper will be addressing the limitations of one-dimensional analysis for cover systems on sloping and hummocky terrain.

The applied stochastical method for dispersion provides more accurate solution of mass transport modelling. A method is proposed for the determination of antimony in ores. Antimony is volatilized as antimony iodide by heating with ammonium iodide at a controlled temperature.The fusion mixture is extracted with hydrochloric acid and the antimony content is measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry using an air/ acetylene flame. The time taken for analysis when comparedwith existing fusion and separation procedures is considerably reduced. Cations and anions likely to be present in antimony ores were also studied for possible interference effects but were not found to interfere.

The very fact that oil is produced generally away from centres of population means that it has to be carried by sea to the area in which it is required. Construction of the Ranger uranium project located 230 kiss east of Darwin in the Northern Territory commenced in January 1979. Energy Resources of Australia Ltd (ERA) was incorporated in February 1980 to acquire all the rights in the project. The total cost to ERA of these rights was $407 million, made up of $125 million in cash to the Federal Govern- ment and the issue of 125 million $1.00 shares at par, plus a payment of $16 million in cash to each of Peko-Wallsend Ltd (Peko) and EZ Industries Ltd (EZ).

Thermo Fisher Scientific is a supplier of samplers, instruments, analysers and consumables to the mining industry under the Thermo Scientific brand. The critical need to provide a representative sample to the analyser has played a pivotal role in product development. Products discussed are the Analysis and Sampling Station (AnStat) for mineral slurries, the Coal Quality Manager (CQM) and the prototype Bore Hole Analyser (BHX) with optional drill chip recovery system. Analytical techniques used in the above products are XRF, PGNAA and LIBS respectively. The company also designs and supplies conventional mechanical sampling equipment and complete sampling systems for bulk material applications (historical Ramsey brand). These products and application of them are presented.

Extensive infrastructure construction works were required for the development of the underground and open-cut coal mine at Ulan to a production capacity of 5 million tonnes of steaming coal per annum. The Ulan Mine development project was constructed in a two year period at a cost of $240 million. The infrastructure component included the construction of the mine site building works, civil works and 150km of railway, valued at $105 million. These works were successfully completed under a construction management agreement within two years. The separate elements of the project are described in detail in the paper.

The review covers historical aspects of each organisation and the current activities and management structure. The linkages between the organisations through membership are briefly discussed. The paper comments on the evolution of the formation of the organi- sations and the networks between them that do exist and operate regu- larly. Rationalisation or a process to consider formation of new groups to fill gaps in the network are recommended for further research.

Results of experiments for dissolution of zinc by aeration of sphalerite in glass, copper, galvanised iron and stainless steel vessels of identical dimensions are reported. It was found that in a glass container dissolution of zinc reaches a maximum after 30 min aeration and then decreases whereas in the copper container dissolution remains nearly unchanged up to 30 min aeration and then increases. In the cases of galvanised iron and stainless steel containers zinc dissolution increased steadily with time up to 60 min aeration. It is suggested that the different rates of dissolution in glass and copper containers may be due to electro-chemical actions.
