THE question of the influence of gases upon the properties of copper has received the attention of a number of investigators, among whom Sieverts,1 Iwasé,2 Lobley and Jepson3 stand preeminent. SOLUBILITY OF . GASES IN. COPPER Sieverts and Iwasé concerned themselves with the solubility of a variety of gases in the metal in the solid and liquid states. They determined the absorption coefficients of these gases and in all cases found a sharp change in solubility at the melting point of the metal. In this respect they disagree with Lobley and Jepson, who have based their opinions upon the appearance of small ingots of the metal which had been fused in an atmosphere of one or other of three gases and had then been rapidly cooled, while surrounded by gas, to the freezing point (rate-possibly 30° to 60° C. per sec.). The ingots that had been fused and cooled under nitrogen and carbon monoxide were free from blowholes and it was assumed that these gases were not absorbed in amounts much in excess of those which would dissolve in the solid metal; the ingots similarly treated under hydrogen were full of blowholes and it was assumed in this case that gas was ejected on solidification of the copper. The effect of varying the rate of freezing upon the character of the test ingots was not examined by these investigators; otherwise, it is felt, their views might have been subject to modification. Sieverts' most important contribution is that the solubility of a gas in any metal is proportional to the square root of its pressure or concentration. Knowing then the absorption coefficients of the various gases in copper, it should be possible to determine the analysis of the

A study has been made of the growing, annealing, and diffusion parameters in PbSe, Pb1-ySnySe, and Pb1-xSnxTe. Single crystals of these materials have been grown using the Bridgman technique. For all of the above materials the as-grown crystals are p type with high carrier densities. To reduce the carrier concentration and increase the carrier mobility, the samples are annealed either isothermally or by a two-zone method. From isothermal anneals, the liquidus-solidus boundary on the metal-rich side of the stoichiometric composition has been obtained for some alloys of Pb1-xSnxTe and on both the metal- and seleniunz-rich sides for PbSe and alloys of Pbl-ySnySe. In Pbo.935 Sno.065 Se carrier concentrations as low as 5 x1016 Cm-3 and mobilities as high as 44,000 sq cm v-1 sec-1 at 77°K have been obtained. Inter diffusion parameters mere also studied. The ddiffusion experiments mere identical to the isothermal or two-zone annealing experiments except that the samples were removed prior to complete equilibration. The resulting p-n junction depths were determined by sectioning and thermal probing. Inter diffusion coefficients for various temperatures were calculated for both PbSe and Pb0.93Sn0.0,Se. RECENTLY, there has been considerable interest in the PbTe-SnTe and PbSe-SnSe alloys with the rock salt crystal structure. The unusual feature of these systems is the variation of energy gap EG with composition. Several investigations1-3 have shown that EG for the lead chalcogenides decreases as the tin content increases, goes through zero, and then increases again with further increase in tin content. The possibility of obtaining an arbitrary energy gap by selecting the composition is an especially attractive feature of these alloys for applications involving long-wavelength infrared detectors and lasers. In addition, some unusual magneto-optical, galvanomagnetic, and thermomag-netic effects should occur for alloys with low band gaps. If uncompensated low carrier density crystals can be obtained, then a small carrier effective mass, a large dielectric constant, and the resultant high carrier mobility should yield enormous effects at low temperature in a magnetic field. The relative variation of the energy gap with pressure should also be very large for these low gap materials. The primary purpose of this paper is to provide some information concerning the preparation of low carrier concentra- tion, high carrier mobility, and homogeneous single crystals with a predetermined alloy composition. I) DETERMINATION OF ALLOY COMPOSITIONS In all of the work described in this paper, the composition of lead and tin chalcogenides in the alloys was determined by electron microprobe analysis. Separate X-ray spectrometers are used to make simultaneous intensity measurements of the Pb La1 and Sn La1 lines emitted by the sample under excitation by a beam of 25 kev electrons focused to a spot about 2 µm in diam. These intensities are compared to the intensities of the same lines emitted by standards under the same conditions. The standards used are the terminal compounds of each pseudobinary system, i.e., PbTe and SnTe for Pbl-xSnxTe alloys, PbSe and SnSe for Pbl-ySnySe alloys. The composition of the sample is then obtained from theoretical calibration curves which relate the weight fractions of lead and tin in the alloy to the measured ratios of X-ray intensities for the sample and the standards. The lead and tin calibration curves for each alloy system were calculated by using corrections for backscattered electrons,4 ionization,5 and absorption,6 and assuming that the atom fraction of tellurium or selenium in the sample and standards is exactly +. Results obtained by using the microprobe are in good agreement with those obtained by wet chemical analysis. II) CRYSTAL GROWTH FROM THE VAPOR Early work on the vapor growth of PbSe was carried out by Prior.7 He used small chips of Bridgman-grown single crystals as the source material and frequently converted the whole charge of a few grams into one crystal. In the present work, vapor growth occurred using a metal-rich or chalcogenide-rich two-phased alloy powder as the source material. Small, nearly stoichiometric crystals are formed on the walls of the quartz tube. The procedure will now be described in detail. Initially, a 100-g charge containing (metal)o.51(chalco-genide)o 49 proportions or (metal)o.49(chalcogenide)o. 51 proportions of the as-received elements in chunk form are placed in a fused silica ampoule. After the ampoule is loaded, it is evacuated with a diffusion pump and sealed. The sealed ampoule is placed in the center of a vertical resistance furnace. The region containing the ampoule is heated to about 50°C above the liquidus temper-ature for the particular composition used. After about one-half hour at temperature, the elements are reacted and the molten material homogenized. The ampoule is quenched in water. The quenched ingot is crushed to a coarse powder for vapor growth experiments and to a fine powder for the isothermal annealing experiments which are discussed in a later section. Since the end of World War II interest has been increasing in the use of shaped charges in the mining industry and in other industries using explosives for blasting purposes. Shaped charges employ the principle known as the "Munroe effect," which was discovered by Charles E. Mun-roe more than 50 years ago (in 1888). Details of their design have been explained elsewhere.1,2,3 Fig I shows the essential features of design of two types of shaped charges (with conical and hemispherical cavities) and a schematic sketch of their action upon detonation. The following discussion deals with the behavior of the metal in the cavity liners when they are subjected to intense Pressures exerted when the explosive charge is detonated. Among the conclusions reached in research On shaped explosive charges, the following have been established concerning cavity liners:1'2 I. The optimum wall thickness of a conical cavity liner is dependent upon the apex angle of the 'One as well as On the base diameter of the charge. Acute apex angles require thinner walls for optimum perfmnance and more obtuse angles require thicker walls for the same base diameter' 2. Cones were more effective in forming a penetrating jet when the walls were tapered; that is, the thickness of the wall of the cone increased from the apex down. 3. The physical and mechanical properties of metals have a marked effect upon their performance as cavity-liner material. Boiling point, ductility, malleability, tensile strength, and hardness are among the properties that influence the effectiveness of a metal used as a cavity liner. Lead, for example, makes a wide, flat crater in steel plates. Aluminum makes a deeper crater than lead, and an aluminum alloy having a high tensile strength makes a deeper hole, but slightly smaller in diameter. Cast iron makes a deep, narrow hole. These findings, together with the following analysis under Metallographic Survey of slug, offer solutions to many of the problems involved in solving the mechanism of the formation of Munroe jets. It has been fairly well established that cavity liners collapse in a manner similar to that indicated in Fig 2, Conical liners are known to collapse upon themselves while hemispherical liners are believed to turn inside out in the process of jet formation. The first has been definitely proved by recovery of collapsed portions of cones, while liners from partly detonated charges show that hemispheres may turn inside out. Fig 3 shows a sketch of a recovered slug from a 6-in. shaped charge using a 45° cone made of cast iron. (This size of charge drilled holes up to 3 ft in depth in solid granodiorite.)

The following analysis was an outgrowth of a midterm examination given by one of the authors (M.J.M) in a course entitled Metallurgy 541 "Applications of Dislocation Theory'' at Iowa State University. Fig, l(a) shows the three-layer sequence of atoms lying in the (111) plane which characterizes the fully ordered AB3 fcc crystal, i.e., LI2 type. If any two-layer sequence of close-packed planes is constructed from Fig. 16)' the structure would be hcp of the DO,, type. Consider for convenience that the circled atoms lie in the plane of the drawing while those shown square and triangular lie immediately above and below the plane of the drawing, respectively. It has already been shown' that if a Shockley partial dislocation is passed over the plane of the paper, then the square atoms in Fig. 1(a) are displaced from their original positions as shown by the arrows in Fig. l(b). Not only is an intrinsic fault produced but the crystal is simultaneously disordered across the slip plane. In particular, 2AB bonds are converted to 1AA and 1BB bonds when referred to the area outlined by the solid line in Fig. 1. If, on the other hand, a Shockley partial is allowed to pass immediately above and immediately below the plane of the paper so as to displace the atoms in opposite directions as shown in Fig. l(c), an extrinsic fault is producedZ and twice the amount of disorder is introduced into the crystal as compared to the dislocation-produced intrinsic fault, if only broken first-neighbor bonds are counted. If an intrinsic stacking fault is produced by removing a close-packed plane of atoms in Fig. l(a) and displacing the two adjacent planes by 1/3a0[111], no wrong nearest-neighbor bonds are produced. Similarly, if an extra half plane of atoms with the same arrangement as any of those shown in Fig. l(a) is inserted between any two planes in the same figure, then an extrinsic stacking fault is produced in which once again no wrong nearest-neighbor bonds are produced. The latter two faults are bounded by Frank partial dislocations. Since, at least in the alloy CU3AU,3 nearly all of the ordering energy resides in the first nearest-neighbor interactions, intrinsic and extrinsic stacking faults and associated APB's of the Frank type are expected to have significantly lower energy than those of the Shockley type in CusAu in particular and quite likely in L1, and DO19 type alloys in general. IN view of the recent findings of a pronounced ordering of atoms in s phase alloys containing elements of the first long row of the periodic table (and including molybdenum),l it is of interest to resolve the question of ordering for s phases containing second and third-row elements. Examples of the latter have been provided recently by Greenfield and Beck2 and two of them, Re-Cr and Ru-Cr, would appear to be favorable for a study of ordering by X-ray diffraction methods because of the considerable differences in the scattering factors concerned. In addition, s phase is found to occur in the Os-Cr system, where the difference in scattering factors is even larger. Accordingly, X-ray powder intensities have been measured in an attempt to learn the nature of the ordering, if any, in these three v alloys. Since there is no reported work on intermediate phases in the Os-Cr system, an exploratory investigation was made in this system, and it was found that, in addition to the s phase, the phase with the A-15 or ß-W structure also occurs. Specimen Preparation—The alloys were prepared by compressing mixed powders of —200 mesh size and sintering in an atmosphere of pure dry hydrogen. All alloys were rapidly cooled from the annealing temperature to room temperature in a stream of cold dry hydrogen in a water-cooled chamber. Table I lists the sources and purities of the starting materials, as well as the details of processing for each of the alloys investigated. Intermediate Phases in the Os-Cr System—In the absence of information on intermediate phases in the Os-Cr system, it was suspected that this system would resemble that of Ru-Cr, where a s phase, RuCr2,2 and a phase with the A-15 structure, RuCr3,3,4 have been identified. Production in the Argentine in 1930 amounted to 1,415,099.7 metric tons, which converted into barrels of 42 gal., using the factor of 6.29, amounts to 8,909,773 bbl. This is a decrease of 481,613 bbl. from the 1929 production, which was 9,391,386 bbl. The production for 1930 was divided among three fields, as shown in Table 1. THE Portland Cement Association was organized more than a third of a century ago by a group of cement manufacturers, to do cooperatively the educational and research work needed to ensure proper use of their product. Specifically, the Association has a threefold purpose: (1) to search out facts to ensure the best possible service from concrete; (2) to give the widest possible circulation to facts affecting the use of concrete; (3) to urge practical application of those facts on actual building projects. An organization of technically trained men conducts many research projects in the Association laboratories, interprets their findings and applies them practically in the field. The net effect of this work has been to improve the design and prolong the life of roads, bridges, industrial, commercial and public buildings, homes, farm structures and concrete products. The results of this technical research and experimentation are made available to the entire construction industry through bulletins and reports. Information is also released to the general public through newspapers, magazines and Association publications. In addition to a technical staff in the general office in Chicago, the Association has district offices in 22 cities. Field engineers cover 37 states, the District of Columbia and British Columbia, to give service to users of Portland cement. ACCIDENT PREVENTION During the early part of the century, there began a complete transformation in the processes of manufacturing cement. Electricity, with its attendant hazards, was beginning to replace steam; huge rotary kilns and tube mills were being substituted for the vertical kiln and "coffee grinder" mill. Only a few far-sighted leaders realized the import of these innovations, and they also recognized the fact that workmen must be protected against the hazards of the new machinery. By their sincerity and firm purpose they infused into the whole industry the concept of industry's responsibility for safeguarding employees. THE following is a description of the methods used in rescuing men and extinguishing the underground fire at the Pennsylvania mine, Butte, Mont. This fire, which cost the lives of 21 men, began about 9 p.m., Feb. 14, 1916, at or near a ventilating fan on the 1,200 air-shaft station. This shaft at that time was downcast, while the main hoisting shaft was upcast. Owing to the proximity of the fire to the air shaft, the air in the latter soon became heated, and as the fan on the level was not running¬the power having been cut off shortly after the outbreak' of the fire-the aim' shaft became upcast to the 300 level. At this point a blanket of cold air from the surface caused the smoke and gases to he drawn in on that level and carried down again through the workings to the 1,200. A short time after the discovery of the fire, water was turned down the air shaft through a series of pipes around the collar of the shaft, which caused the smoke to recede, below the 300, so that within 2 hr. it was possible to search that level for the missing men. From the above it will be apparent why the air shaft was upcast instead of downcast as under normal conditions, and why men were suffocated at considerable distances from the seat of the fire. The smoke and gases that came up the main hoisting shaft did not diffuse through the workings to any extent. There are doors on all levels in the connections to the main hoisting and air shafts, but-in the confusion and running around many of these doors were left open, and this undoubtedly caused the smoke and gases to spread more rapidly than they would otherwise have done. It was necessary for most of the men on the various levels to pass close to the air shaft in going to the hoisting shaft, and when they encountered the smoke and gases in that vicinity a number turned hack and climbed down with the direction of the air currents and were then suffocated, while all those who passed through the relatively short pall of smoke to the main shaft were saved.

THE accuracy with which grade and tonnage of a mineral deposit may be calculated from diamond-drill assays is dependent upon: (I) the reliability of core and sludge samples and (2) the validity of methods used in grade and tonnage calculations. Limitations imposed by drilling and sampling preclude elaborate methods of computation. In adjusting core and sludge assays the importance assigned the core and sludge samples may be based on either the respective weights recovered or the respective volumes represented by each. Only when core and sludge recoveries are poor do discrepancies between adjusted assays calculated by these two methods develop, in which case the "weight" method gives emphasis to the core sample and the "volume" method gives emphasis to the sludge sample. When the sludge suffers classification within the drill hole, the weight method gives more accurate results; when the sludge sample suffers no classification, the volume method gives more accurate results. Any drilling campaign offers a compromise between desired accuracy on the one hand and expediency, limited time, money, or facilities on the other. Since the determination of grade and tonnage is an approximation at best, a proper basis for their computation requires a knowledge of the limitations imposed by all phases of work upon which the calculations depend. A rational basis for coordination of these phases of work requires determination of: (I) the degree of accuracy desired, as a function of the object of examination; (2) the degree of accuracy attainable, as a function of the limitations imposed in the drilling and sampling program; and (3) the validity of method to be used in calculating grade and tonnage from core and sludge assays. This paper presents results of a comparison made between two commonly used methods of adjusting core and sludge assays, the assumptions upon which these methods are based, and the interrelationship of the phases of work upon which these calculations are dependent. OBJECT OF EXAMINATION The purpose of prospecting any mineral deposit is to secure sufficient samples from which ore grade and tonnage may be calculated. Any mine examination, preliminary or formal, has a definite purpose, although its scope may be limited or broad. The type of examination to be conducted is dependent, therefore, upon the reason for instituting the investigation; its scope and thoroughness are directly related to economic considerations. It is highly desirable, therefore, that before starting a drilling campaign a complete understanding of the extent of examination and desired degree of accuracy be determined as a means of simplifying the drilling program and unifying the relative degree of

THE pumping of solids in water suspension is an important part of many metallurgical and mining operations. In most cases, it is still in the rule of thumb category for which no universal formula has been developed, and much research is needed. Because of the limited and incomplete data available, this article may be classed as an experience paper, which is presented with the hope that some contribution will be made toward the development of the so-called universal formula. This formula, if and when developed, may be evolved from several factors, many of which are not now available for general application. The designing engineer is interested in obtaining accurate forecasts on: 1—the minimum velocities needed to prevent choke-ups in the pipeline, which in turn dictates pipe sizes, 2—power required for pumping, 3—pump selection. The basic factors for a given problem will include: 1—weight per unit of time of solids to be handled, 2—specific gravity of solids, for calculation of volume, friction and power, 3—screen analysis of solids with the colloidal acting, i.e., the slime fraction, a very important factor, 4— shape of particle or some means of determining a friction constant, 5—effects of percentage of solids, 6—development of a viscosity factor to be used in the overall calculations, 7—calculation of the lower limits of pipeline velocities permissible, 8—calculation of total head, pump horsepower, and 9—setting up of pump specifications. In certain limited cases horsepower and total heads and minimum velocities may be computed and a suitable pump selected from basic data, but in many cases, as in mining of Florida pebble phosphate, experience rather than a hydraulic formula still should be used as a basis of selection. Pumping Florida Pebble Matrix Pumping at the Noralyn mine of International Minerals and Chemical Corp. will be used as an example. Other areas will vary as to the characteristics of the matrix, especially the slime content. A typical screen analysis of this matrix is: +14 mesh, pebble size,* 2.1 pct; —14 +35 mesh, 11.4 pct; -35 +I50 mesh, 60.5 pct; -150 mesh, 25.0; total, 100 pct; moisture in bank, 20.0 pct; weight per cu ft in bank, 120 lb. The —150 mesh fraction may increase to as much as 35 pct in adjacent areas. When thoroughly elutriated, the matrix has a relatively slow settling rate, which is an important factor in permitting lower pipeline velocities without choke-ups. Exact data is not available to evaluate settling rates. For a factor of 100 a suspension of clean building sand in water is suggested. When pumping long * Pebble is a commercial designation for the coarser fraction of finished phosphate from a washer, usually +14 mesh. distances, a quick settling matrix allows the coarser solids to settle out along the bottom of the pipeline, causing drag, turbulence, and increased friction. With a slow settling matrix as at Noralyn, turbulence acts to keep the solids in suspension at a lower friction head, regardless of the pumping distance. When the pebble content of the matrix, i.e., the + 14 mesh fraction, is in excess of 10 pct of the total solids, trouble may be expected from settling out even in normal pumping distances. To prevent choke-ups and maintain tonnage, an additional pump must be added in the long runs, where one pump would otherwise be satisfactory. A typical pulp handled is: total volume, 7800 gpm; water, 4500; solids pumped per hr, 4200 lb; sp gr pulp, 1.4; percent solids in pulp, 46.; pipe size, 16-in. ID; pulp velocity, 12.85 fps; probable critical velocity, 10 fps, as below this minimum velocity choke-ups would be numerous. In calculating friction heads the Armco handbook is used where a roughness factor based on 15-year-old pipe is set up. Because the pipe used in pumping matrix is smooth and polished because of the scouring action of the phosphate and its silica content, the head losses in the Armco table for water are practically the same as in pumping the Noralyn matrix through smooth pipe, plus the fact that conditions vary widely over short periods, making accurate determinations difficult to obtain. New pumps and pump changes are being tested continuously and a wealth of data built up. This has resulted in a substantial improvement and lower relative costs in pumping matrix. The Florida phosphate industry is constantly seeking to offset higher wage and material costs with improved technique. Until a few years ago a 12-in. discharge pump was commonly used, with heads as low as 80 ft. Sizes have gradually increased and heads more than doubled. For example, the following pump was placed under test at the Noralyn mine: make, Georgia Iron Works; size, suction 16 in., discharge 14 in.; impeller, 39-in. diam; motor, 600 hp, slip ring; full load speed, 514 rpm. The results were increased head, higher capacity than the older design, with fewer pumps in the line from mine to washer.

Since the economies in the blast furnace resulting from enriching iron ores are so great, much attention has been paid during the past few years to the various methods of concentrating lean ores, and, as the concentrated ore is usually of extreme fineness, various methods of agglomeration and sintering, of more or less value, have been put into operation. The resulting agglomerated concentrates are generally obtained in the form of briquettes or nodules. The briquettes naturally divide themselves into two classes: (1) those made by the mixture of some binding agent, and then formed into briquettes under great pressure; and (2) those made by sintering the concentrates, the latter either being formed into bricks before exposure to heat or the sintered mass broken into fragments afterward. Of the first class I will not speak, as they are not used on an extensive scale in this country. The second class of briquettes, or those made by sintering, are simply masses of melted or fused silicate and oxide of iron mingled with more or less silicates of aluminum, lime, and magnesia. The fact that the material in a briquette is sintered is proof positive that there are no pores in the material. There are, however, quite a number of holes of greater or less diameter through the gubstance of the briquette. They are not pores in the common acceptance of that term as applied to ores by furnacemen, as the ides of the holes and channels are fused. In reality the material is simply mill cinder. It is practically untouched by the gases in the upper part of the furnace, and the iron has to be reduced by solid carbon in the boshes and hearth. It was with humility that I accepted the invitation of the Board of Directors of our Institute to deliver the Twentieth Howe Memorial Lecture. Many previous lecturers could speak from personal experience of the great work done by Professor Howe. It was not my privilege to be one of his students but, indirectly, I came under the influence of his work many years ago. My mentor in Metallurgy at Carnegie Institute of Technology, Prof. Fred Crab tree, was an ardent admirer of Professor Howe and his work. Professor Crabtree taught me early to appreciate Professor Howe's love of truth and keen desire to find a scientific reason for every metallurgical phenomenon. In this early search, Professor Howe encountered many unexplainable facts. Nevertheless, in the classic text, "The Metallurgy of Steel," published in 1891, he indicated that he believed Research could light the way. Under the heading of "The Treachery of Steel" he said: "In the early use of Bessemer and Open Hearth Steel, many then unexplained and hence mysterious failures occurred. With our present knowledge, an easy explanation of most of them would probably have been seen. But even today certain unexplained and apparently inexpli- cable failures occur in steel; inexplicable in spite of full and intelligent investigation." Then Professor Howe continued to talk about "the trustworthiness of steel" in the following manner: First, the steel-maker has learned by experience. He knows today far better the effects of a high percentage of carbon or of phosphorus; of cracks, pipes and blow-holes; of segregation and imperfect mixing; of over-heating; of finishing too hot or too cold. Knowing, he guards against them more effectually, and keeps at home much steel that he would formerly have sent into the market. Those who would not, or could not learn and do, have been driven out of the business; the conditions necessary for producing good sound steel by the acid Bessemer and the acid Open Hearth processes have been mastered. By and by, the basic process came along with new conditions, new liabilities to unsoundness, a great hue and cry about mysterious fractures followed, and Lloyd's register provisionally forbade the use of basic steel. Much basic steel was irregular and brittle throughout; too much carbon, too much phosphorus, too cold teemings—imperfect mixing. Still there was little doubt that, with further experience, these difficulties of the basic process would be mastered as those of the acid process had been. This shows that Professor Howe could not take anything for granted. Believing that careful research would find the answer to all mysterious phenomena, he was several generations ahead of the practical acceptance and adoption of this principle.

Coal mining per se has advanced at a greater and more rapid stride in the past 25 years than the mining of any other mineral, but the basic method is fundamentally the same as it was the first day a miner took a pick into his hands many centuries ago. A. D. Le Claire and R. S. Barnes (Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Harwell, Didcot, Berks., England)-—This much awaited paper admirably confirms that the Kirkendall effect is a true diffusion phenomenon and likely to be found in all diffusing systems. The most likely explanation put forward so far to account for the shift of interface is that the two components of the system, diffusing in opposite directions, do so with unequal rates so that there is a net loss of material from that half of the diffusion zone rich in the more rapidly diffusing component. This loss is accompanied, and at least partly compensated for, by a closing up or decrease in volume of this latter half of the diffusion zone and an expansion of the other half so as to tend to keep constant the overall volume per atom. This is manifest as a movement of the original interface. If this is a true picture of what is taking place then there are at least two important matters requiring further study."1—The quantitative relating of the observed shift with the independently measured separate diffusion coefficients of the two diffusing species."2—A detailed study of the mechanism and characteristics of the closing up process."We would like first to make a few remarks pertinent to these topics. In connection with the first of these, it is a pity that more and detailed measurements were not made on the Au-Ag system, the only one for which the separate diffusion coefficients of the two species have been measured.'" One of us (A. D. Le C.) has calculated from Johnson's results the shift to have been expected in samples D.2 and D.3. Darken4 showed that the velocity v with which the markers move is related to the separate diffusion coefficients Dau, Dag, by the eauation:"dN"v = (Dag — Dau "dx"dN"where .is the concentration gradient at the mark-ax"ers. Discussion of the paper of L. A. DELANO, presented at the St. Louis meeting, October, 1917, and printed in Bulletin No. 129, September, 1917, pp. 1267 to 1286. L. A. DELANO.-Since this paper was written, our daily mill tonnage has increased, from 2100 tons to 2700 tons a clay. We now use 11,000 lb. of chrome-steel balls of 2 ½ -in. maximum diameter, for an average crushing capacity of 275 tons per 24 hr., this giving a much higher crushing efficiency. I wish to call attention to two typographical errors in my paper as published. On page 1271, Table 1, the screen analysis of ore at the Bonne Terre mill should be stated in inches instead of mesh. - On page 1272, "the rolls average 185 tons per 24 hr., and have shown by test that 250 tons per hour can be maintained" should, of course, read "250 tons per 24 hours." THE CHAIRMAN (0. M. BILHARZ, Miami, Okla.).-Is the increased mill capacity due to improvement in the re-crushing of middlings or to keeping middlings out of circulation and treating them separately? L. A. DELANO.-AS was shown in Mr. Rabling's paper (Bulletin No. 128, p. 1161) the tonnage was raised by about 400 tons by simply changing the arrangement of screen openings in the jig bed and using punched plate instead of woven-wire screen. Then, by adding a ball-mill, we are taking from the jigs a much larger tonnage of middlings than before or as much as the ball-mill will crush. By sending the ball-mill product to tables and flotation, the jig capacity for original ore is increased. CHAIRMAN BILHARZ.-In your opinion, the satisfactory operation of a Hancock jig on a given ore requires adjustment of the length of the different screens and careful selection of screen openings? L. A. DELANO.-I think it does. In order to decide what screen openings to use on the jigs, we did a great deal of experimental work, making screen analyses of the various hutch products, and then hand-sorting the galena, middlings and chat from each size screen to determine the percentage of galena in each. Then adjusting our jig screens, we gradually worked the process up to a very efficient basis. ERNEST GAYFORD, Salt Lake City, Utah.-I would like too ask Mr. Delano whether the work of the Allen cone has been quite as satisfactory as the manufacturers claim for it.

I have long been aware that ferruginous copper furnace-slags if fused in the electric arc will yield metallic iron containing copper, and in order to confirm this knowledge, and to obtain further information of the behavior of such slags in the high temperature and reducing conditions of the electric furnace, a number of samples of slag were fused in an experimental electric furnace. The results obtained, given in Table I., show that a very large amount of metallic iron was produced, and that this iron carried with it practically all the copper, gold, and silver, and more than 50 per cent. of the sulphur, of the original slag. The metallic buttons formed in the electric furnace were clean, hard, but not brittle.

In connection with the work of Committee D5, Coal and Coke, of the American Society for Testing and Materials in developing new standards and improving old standards, series of tests were made to check the variance of sample preparation and analysis of American coals. Table I in the "Tentative Method of Preparing Coal Samples for Analysis - 02013-62T" is rather complicated, and the tests were designed to develop data for the simplification of this table. An allowance of 20% of the total variance of sampling and analysis for the sample preparation and analysis steps was used. Also, instead of coals being grouped into ash ranges, they were grouped as washed and raw (unwashed) coals. As a result of these tests, a simplified Table I for Tentative Standard 02013 has been proposed. A standard test for laboratories to check their variance of sample preparation and analysis has been developed. Committee D5 on Coal and Coke of the American Society for Testing and Materials has been making a study of all standards applying to coal for the purpose of improving and bringing them up to date and for breaking some of the existing standards covering a number of tests into single standards. As an illustration, sample preparation is now partly covered in ASTM Designation D492-48, Sampling Coals Classified According to Ash Content, and partly in ASTM Designation D271-58, Laboratory Sampling and Analysis of Coal and Coke. The latter contains, in addition to parts of sample preparation, methods for determining Moisture, Ash, Volatile Matter, etc. Although revision of sampling methods and sample preparation methods are now assigned separately, it is possible that they may end up as one standard. One of the first new Tentative Standards developed as the result of these studies was ASTM Designation D2013, Tentative Method of Preparing Coal Samples for Analysis. Although this method is quite an im- provement over that in the old standards and gives very specific instructions, Table I (attached) is quite complicated and rather hard to understand. In order to take advantage of reduced quantities or weights, it is necessary to know the ash content within rather narrow limits before sample preparation and no distinction is made as to whether the coal is cleaned or uncleaned. No limits of accuracy are assigned to the sample preparation and analysis. The total over-all accuracy of sampling, preparation and ash determination as given in D492-48 has been specified for commercial sampling procedure as follows: "This procedure is intended for an accuracy such that if a large number of samples were taken from a single lot of coal, the test results in 95 out of 100 cases would fall within ? 10 per cent of the average ash content of the sample." Although Appendix 11, Method for Determining the Over-All Variance of Reduction and Analysis in the Tentative Methods for Mechanical Sampling of Coal, ASTM Designation D2234-63T, does give a method for determing the over-all accuracy of preparation and analysis expressed as variance and also the F test, it does not permit the determination of the variance at the various stages of reduction or of the ash determination. It was decided in 1961 to ask a number of laboratories to run a series of tests for the purpose of determining the variance at various stages of reduction and analysis with the view of simplifying Table I of the Tentative Standard D2013-62-T. This paper is a record of this series of tests with recommendations which resulted from the tests. At the same time and preceding these tests the International Organization for Standardization under Committee TC/27 WG 7 was studying the same problem. Tomlinson1 of England and Dr. paul2 of West Germany had made studies giving quite a bit of information. Also Schwerd and coryel13 published some information which was the main basis for the Mechanical Division provision in ASTM Tentative Standard D2013-62T, Table I. In checking with the various laboratories which offered to cooperate in these tests, none was found which used mechanical division through the entire preparation procedure. Mine models are of great value to the student and to the layman in visualizing underground conditions, and, in a measure, should be just as much a part of the equipment of a mining school as sets of ore specimens, catalogs, or drawings. The chief drawback, as Professor Stock has indicated, is the time and cost of making them. The greatest good in the development of the model comes to the person who makes it, and I have often wondered whether it might not be possible to have each student make one model during his undergraduate career. At the University of Washington we have been collecting sets of mine timbers, made of 6 by 6-in. lumber, illustrating shaft, level, and stope timbering. This work has been done by freshmen. Perhaps each educational institution could specialize in the creation of a certain type of model and exchange its product for that of another school, just as we now do with ore collections. In this way we could build up good museums at a relatively low cost. JOHN R. CHAMBERLIN, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary?).-The type of model described by Professor Stoek is admirably suited to exhibits of coal mining in horizontal veins, and fulfills perfectly the three purposes mentioned. As an educational illustration in colleges, especially when the students themselves build the model under the direction of their instructors, it is of the highest value; and as each condition in mining requires special methods to depict properly in a model, the student is compelled to exercise considerable inventive resource to construct a true representation, stimulating the imagination and interest in his subject. Models built for exhibits in lawsuits are usually constructed to show prominently some particular feature of vein formation or geology, or the relation of underground workings to surface property lines, and as such their use is invaluable to the successful litigant. When the litigation is ended, it is natural that the model should be relegated to the basement and frequently destroyed, as data on underground workings are often considered of a private character by the operators; and it is
