INTRODUCTION What is automation? Why automate? Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary defines automation as "the automatically controlled operation of an apparatus, process, or system by mechanical or electronic devices that take the place of human organs of observation, effort, and decision." This definition gives an implied answer to the second question, "Why automate?" Automation, automatic control devices, and process control equipment receive their justification in supplementing or replacing manpower, which results in decreased operating costs. In the past, processes were operated with the minimum amount of instruments needed merely to guide operators. Processes were manually con- trolled by the operator on the basis of simple temperature, pressure, flow, and level indications on a panel. Today the tendency is to design a new plant to operate in a fully automatic manner according to a preset pro- gram utilizing a minimum of manpower. In addition to this direct cost reduction in manual labor, increased equipment capacity results from uniformity of flow and uniform control of process variables. This control eliminates or minimizes surges and permits equipment to be operated at or near its ultimate capacity and, for a given material throughput, permits the use of smaller process equipment. Automatic control, therefore, be it in the field of coal processing or in any industrial field, is simply a problem of economics. Control equipment is justified in terms of its contribution toward increasing productivity, increasing profit margins, or producing a new and salable product at a profit. Instruments and control devices can be divided into two general groups: (1) units which measure and (2) units which both measure and control a process variable.

A method is presented for predicting pressure drop for two-phase fluid flow in horizontal pipes. A set of 267 experimental measurements randomly sampled from approximately 1,000 measurements from various literature sources was used. Pressure gradients calculated by the procedure developed and compared with the experimental values showed a bias of +0.82 per cent and a standard deviation of 20.8 per cent. The advantatges of this method over other available methods of predicting two-phase flow pressure drop are (a) its comparative simplicity of application, (b) its relative independence of flow patterns, (c) its accuracy, which on the basis of a statistical evaluation predicts pressure drop closer than other available methods, and, (d) its ability to satisfactorily correlate laboratory data from various sources while the correlations from these sources do not appear to agree with one another. The method has been reduced to a simplified graphical procedure, suitable for field use. A two-phase f factor is defined and correlated with parameters involving the flowing gas-liquid mass ratio, a Reynolds number for the gas phase, and a Reynolds number for the liquid phase. The choice of parameters allows the correlation to reduce to the usual f factor plot for the limiting conditions of (111 gas or all liquid. INTRODUCTION The mechanics and characteristics of two-phase flow systems have been of interest throughout the industry for some time. In numerous engineering installations such as pipe lines, chemical reactors, and heat exchangers, two-phase flow conditions are of every day occurrence. In oil production operations it has been desirable, in some cases, to consider transporting gas and oil together in a common pipe from oil field to process plant. The trend toward centrally located stock tank batteries in oil fields has resulted in longer gathering pipelines in which more than one fluid phase is flowing. The increase in the producing capacity of oil wells due to new production tech- niques has created the need for review and re-design of many surface gathering lines for properly handling the increased production. Optimum pipe size for the situations described above has become an important factor. The problem which is of interest here involves the ability to predict the relationship between pressure drop, fluid properties, fluid rates, pipe diameter, and pipe length. Although the literature1,5,10,13,18,19 contains various articles dealing with specific cases of the problem, Lock-hart and Martinelli17 proposed the most general solution. Their method has been later modified by Baker:1 Alves2 demonstrated that different flow patterns are possible for a flow mechanism defined by Martinelli such as gas turbulent, liquid turbulent. Baker explained deviations experienced with Martinelli's correlations on the basis that different flow patterns could exist for the same flow mechanism. Using Martinelli's method of correlatioil, Baker correlated data for each flow pattern for the turbulent-turbulent flow mechanism. The State of Ohio is among the pioneers in the production of oil and gas. Numerous anticlinals, such as the Macksburg, Cow Run and Newport, have been thoroughly developed, and the pools found in connection with them are quite in accord with the structural theory. Numerous oil and gas pools found in the Berea sand, however, demand a different explanation. The study of these pools belongs to the sub-surface geologist, as it is possible to understand the factors controlling "off-structure" accumulations only after a careful study of well records. By carefully analyzing the various conditions over a large territory, it is possible to understand the otherwise meaningless mass of data that one may have at hand, and put it into tangible shape, from which various conclusions may be drawn. The territory here discussed includes Belmont, Guernsey, Muskingum, Noble, Monroe, Morgan, Washington, Athens and Meigs counties, containing the majority of the prolific oil and gas pools of the Carboniferous system in southeastern Ohio. The general dip of the strata is to the southeast, the entire territory lying on the northwestern flank of the Appalachian geosyncline. The best known oil- and gas-producing horizon in the territory is the Berea sand, which lies near the lower part of the Mississippian, with the Sun-burry shales (the coffee-shales of the driller) above, and the Bedford shales below it. The Bedford is underlain by the thick Ohio shales. The Ohio and Bedford contact is considered to be the dividing line between the Carboniferous and Devonian systems. The Berea is one of the most persistent of recognizable oil and gas horizons; its outcrop has always been found in its expected place, and it has always been penetrated whenever the drill went deep enough. It is not expected, however, even of the most uniform formations, that no lithological variations should occur, and the Berea is no exception. Nevertheless, there appears to be a certain regularity in its variation, the main features of which directly affect the accumulation of petroleum.

This article is not presented as a treatise on tin mines and mining in Bolivia. It deals primarily with the tin situation, and but fragmentary information is given regarding individual properties, generalizations being necessary in so short an article. Data on general subjects related to tin mining in Bolivia are necessarily abbreviated and very incomplete. It is believed that the references to be found in this article will help those interested to a more thorough under-' standing of the general conditions extant in Bolivia. Bolivia produces from one-fifth to one-fourth of the world's supply of tin. The United States consumes about one-half of the world's supply and produces practically none. Tin ore is not reduced in the United States. These facts are not generally appreciated by American mining men. Many conflicting data have been published regarding tin in Bolivia. The Transactions of the Institute contain practically no mention of this subject.1 I have made a study of mines and mining conditions in the west coast republics of South America and have been particularly impressed by the possibilities of the Bolivian field.2 In consequence the thought seems justified that the present meeting would, present a fitting occasion to bring the tin situation in Bolivia to the attention of American mining men.

Observations were made on the recrystallization of a 70 pct cdd-rolled silicon-iron crystal with an initial orientation of (113) [332]. Its polygonization and recrystallization characteristics were studied. Results indicated that re crystallization tendency of the deformed crystal is much weakened by the polygonization of the matrix. Complete recrystallization in such specimens is achieved by the growth of recrystallized grains of sufficient size and of the right orientations in relation to the matrix. Evidence was also furnished which suggests that the difference in the re-crystallization tendency is a result of the difference in the severity of lattice bending rather than the difference in orientation of the deformation texture. DUNN and Koh1,2 have made an extensive study on the rolling and annealing textures in silicon-iron crystals. Their results indicated that the recrystallization tendency can be widely different in crystals with different orientations. A particularly interesting example of their results was a crystal with an initial orientation of (113) [332], which developed a deformation texture of (001) [110] after 70 pct cold-rolling. Recrystallization in this crystal took long time anneals at high temperatures. Other crystals having different orientations recrystallized very rapidly. Wiener and corcoran3 have observed the retention of the (100) [011] deformation texture in a low-temperature annealed specimen of a commercial silicon-iron alloy, corresponding to areas of light-etching low-angle boundaries in the annealed struc-

The growing background of experimental information concerning the volumetric and phase behavior of binary and ternary hydrocarbon systems is used as the basis for a comparison of these systems with naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures under conditions representative of underground petroleum reservoirs. The qualitative and semiquantitative similarities and differences between the two types of systems are considered in reference to the possibilities and limitations of using experimental data on binary and ternary systems for predicting the volumetric and phase behavior of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures of low molecular weight. The possible influence on such phase behavior of water, hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen, and components of relatively high molecular weight is discussed. INTRODUCTION During the past two decades much effort has been devoted to the study of the volumetric and phase behavior of pure paraffin hydrocarbons and of binary and ternary mixtures of these compounds. Many of these studies were carried out with the direct objective of utilizing a knowledge of the detailed characteristics of binary and ternary mixtures of the lighter paraffin hydrocarbons for predicting the behavior of more complex mixtures. The ability to make such predictions with accuracy would be of great value in petroleum production and refining. Although the behavior of the methane-propane system' served at one time as a qualitative illustration of the probable characteristics of the more complex hydrocarbon mixtures found in nature, it' fell far short of requirements for quantitative predictions. The present paper endeavors to indicate the relation of the more recently accumulated information concerning the behavior of binary and ternary hydrocarbons to this problem. In discussing binary and ternary systems as examples pointing toward the behavior of multi-component systems no effort is made to present new methods of predicting the characteristics of natural hydrocarbon mixtures. Preliminary proposals have been made elsewhere for the prediction of volumetric phase equilibrium and thermodynamic data for multicomponent mixtures, utilizing as a basis the behavior of binary and ternary systems. Numerous other proposals have been made. That based upon the concept of a pseudo-critical state" has proved to be of value to the petroleum industry. Concurrently with this study of binary and ternary systems investigations have been made of natural hydrocarbon systems. Of the many publications reporting such experimental information only a few examples will be mentioned. A number of studies of black oil and natural gas have been made and much attention has been directed to extended and detailed investigations of the behavior of fluids in condensate fieldS 16,17,18,19,20. This work has been supplemented by some studies of the separation of bitumen from natural hydrocarbon liquids The over-all behavior of such systems has been used in predicting the volumetric and phase behavior of naturally occurring mixtures This background of experimental and correlated information concerning the behavior of multicomponent hydrocarbon systems also permits a direct comparison of the characteristics of binary and ternary aliphatic systems with those materials produced from underground reservoirs. PRESENTATION OF DATA The primary limitation encountered in using binary and ternary aliphatic hydrocarbon mixtures as examples of the characteristics of the fluids encountered in underground reservoirs lies in the existing lack of knowledge of the quantitative effect upon behavior of the presence of several important constituents, notably hydrocarbons of high molecular weight, water, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, and nitrogen. The presence of substantial quantities of hydrocarbons of fairly high molecular weight serves to increase the complexity of the phase behavior of natural systems. No simple systems yet studied give adequate guidance in this regard. The influence of such materials of high molecular weight was indicated earlier",?' to an extent which serves to show that definite limitations now exist in the correlation of simple and complex systems. However, significant progress is being made in filling gaps in the information. For example, similarities in the behavior of fluids in condensate fields with that of binary and ternary systems are becoming more systematically evident. There has been much research and commercial development in recent years in the use of chromium and nickel in steels of various types, including those intended for high-temperature service. By "high-temperature steels" are meant those specifically designed for service at elevated temperatures in steam plants, oil refineries and other industries where high-temperature operations are conducted. This paper is devoted to some preliminary data on the effect of silicon on certain of the most popular chromium-molybdenum steels now being used in quantity by the refining industry and includes a short statement on the influence of copper in steels intended for high-temperature service. Uses of Silicon Next to oxygen, silicon is the most widely distributed and abundant of the earth's substances. Although classed as a nonmetal, it is highly important in the metallurgy of all steels, having been used for years as an efficient and economical degasifier and deoxidizer. Silicon is added to various steels in the form of ferrosilicon, generally at the end of the heat so as to avoid oxidation losses. With acid steels it is added in the furnace (also in the ladle) and generally with basic steels is added in the ladle, so as to avoid reaction with the basic lining through high-temperature acidic reaction with silica, which may be formed by oxidation of the silicon alloy. Several grades of ferrosilicon are available, containing, respectively, 15, 50, 75 and 90 per cent Si. By far the largest tonnage produced is the 50 per cent grade although the 75 and 90 per cent ferro-silicons are used as ladle and furnace additions in the manufacture of steels of high silicon content. In a paper written for the Boston meeting of February, 1888 (Trans., xvi., 693), on "Some Recent Improvements in OpenHearth Steel Practice," the writer described the reducing agent used by the Carbon Iron Company as "a peculiar graphite from Cranston, near Providence, R. I." Upon an application pending at that time, a patent has since been issued as number 259,795, to Mr. Matthew Graff, for the use of solid carbonaceous matter in the form of coke, charcoal, gas carbon, bituminous or anthracite coal, ground to the size of coarse sand and then coated with a mash of lime, magnesia, clay, or other material of a like character, as an agent to reduce metallic oxides. An amount of this prepared carbonaceous matter equal to from 25 to 30 per cent. of the weight of the ore treated is required to perform the complete reduction. The idea is that the carbonaceous matter is protected against rapid combustion by a suitable coating of some inert material, so that, in effect, its action as a reducing agent will be similar to that of the Cranston graphite previously used, allowing the solid carbon to remain without combustion in intimate mixture with the iron oxide at a temperature sufficiently high to reduce the ore and in some cases to melt the matrix in which the iron is held. In the present practice of the Carbon Iron Company, the use of graphite, except for the formation of bottoms of the reverberatory furnaces in which the reduction is performed, has been entirely abandoned, and " retarded coke," as it is called at the works, has taken its place. Five hundred and fifty pounds of Connellsville coke is ground in a pan to 16-mesh fineness, or is taken in the form of ordinary coke-dust, and made into a hollow basin on the mixingfloor ; and seven bucketfuls of a wash composed of equal parts of lime and fire-clay, mixed in water to the consistency of thin cream,

For the third year in a row total value of the Nation's mineral production broke all previous records. A new peak of $20.4 billion was reached in 1964. So says the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The Bureau's preliminary estimate for 1964 is $800 million higher than the value reported for 1963, and $1.6 billion greater than the 1962 figure. The unprecedented demand for minerals, has stimulated development of new mines and expansion of processing capacity in many parts of the country.

THE solubility of graphite in y-iron has been determined by several workers'12 with reasonable agreement. With the increasing use of more complex steels, it is necessary to understand more fully the thermodynamics of the austenite phase. The activity of carbon in a number of alloys is known but the maximum solu- bility of graphite has only been measured by Sohnchen and piwowarsky3 for Fe-Ni and Fe-Si alloys. Recently, Chipman and Brush reviewed the published data on the activity of carbon in binary and ternary austenite and also obtained expressions for calculating the solubility of graphite in Fe-Ni, Fe-Co, and Fe-Si alloys. On comparing the theoretically derived solubilities with the limited results of Sahnchen and Piwowarsky, it was found that the agreement for Fe-C-Si was excellent but there was considerable discrepancy for Fe-C-Ni and no data for Fe-C-Co. It was therefore decided to measure the solubility of graphite in a series of Fe-Ni and Fe-Co alloys. The alloy samples were made up by induction melting a high-purity master alloy under an inert atmosphere in an alumina crucible and drawing the molten metal into four-bore alumina tubes. Using this technique, it was possible to form alloy rods approximately 2 in. long and 1/18 in. in diam. Sixteen lengths of fine rod could be made without solidifying the master alloy. These were then allowed to cool under the inert atmosphere before being sectioned. The samples were packed in a graphite crucible with spectroscopic graphite powder, together with a piece of pure iron foil. Dry hydrogen, which had been saturated with isopropyl alcohol at room temperature, was passed over the crucible at 1000°C for 72 hr. At the end of the 72 hr argon displaced hydrogen in the reaction tube and the crucible was quickly pushed to the water-cooled end. The samples were thoroughly cleaned of the adhering graphite and analyzed. The pure iron samples always contained 1.5 0.02 pct C, which compares favorably with the data of smith2 and

The publication of the report by Mr. F. L. Ransome1 was welcomed by many engineers who had mined in the heart of the San Juan country, braved its long and snowy winters, climbed its lofty peaks, run the gauntlet of its snow-slides, and studied its problems of geology, while making dividends for their English or American clients. This report helps one to understand why the bonanzas occurred, and why the inevitable " borrasca " presents itself where least expected. The Red Mountain district of Ouray county, a very productive section from 1884 to 1893, occupies considerable space in the report mentioned. The character of the ore-occurrence.

Conditions in the oil and gas industry in Indiana were about the same in 1935 as in 1934. This is especially true of the old Trenton area and the Harrison County area where production was steady and almost no exploration and development took place. The past year has seen an increase in drilling activity and a decrease in oil and gas output in southwestern Indiana. In the state, 224 wells were completed in 1935, of which 48 were oil wells, 61 gas wells, and 115 dry holes. A few of these were old gas wells deepened to oil horizons. Twenty-six wells started during 1935 were not completed by Dec. 31. Approximately one-half the wells drilled were within proven areas. A relatively large number of wildcats, especially in Daviess, Pike and Gibson Counties, were in search of new gas supplies to supplant the diminishing resources in those counties. The decreased production of gas was due largely to the fact that existing supplies declined more rapidly than new fields could be brought on. The Alford field, in Pike County, which produced the bulk of the supply in 1934, was called on to do likewise in 1935, but was unable to respond sufficiently to keep up the yearly production for southwestern Indiana. During the last half of the year, the Oaktown field, Knox County, was connected with one of the principal pipe lines of the state, which helped to keep gas production above an unusual low. The decline in oil production was due almost entirely to proration during the first eight months of the year. The proration affected Daviess, Pike, Gibson, Sullivan and Vigo counties, which produce about three-fourths of the total for the state. After proration was lifted, the wells never quite reached the conditions existing before proration. The average daily production per well in Indiana is less than two barrels. The outstanding development in Indiana in 1935 was the drilling in the Oaktown field immediately before and after the laying of the 6-in. pipe line to the field. IN 1925 the writer undertook a detailed statistical study of all producing areas in the Joplin district as a basis for evaluating programs and measuring objectives. For this purpose, the published figures in the yearly volumes of Mineral Resources were used, supplemented for earlier years by publications of the Missouri Geological Survey and other local and less official sources. When all else failed, the available data were projected backward to hazard a reasonable guess as to the unrecorded early output of important areas. Fortunately, the proportion of such prehistory production is not a large factor in any of the totals. These results were used during the next few years to measure the relative importance of various producing areas and to predict the peak period of development of the all-important Picher field. For the purpose of this review, the charts have been completed to the end of 1950. During World War 11, the U. S. Bureau of Mines became interested in a similar study and issued comprehensive statistical tabulations of data up to 1945 ( Info. Circular 7383), which have been checked against the figures used herein. This tabulation, however, does not include all the earlier data used by the writer nor does it offer any estimates of the wholly unrecorded era in the beginnings of the earlier camps.

THE development of the natural resources of any district of any magnitude, inevitably gives rise to many problems off title, usually due to the greatly enhanced value of the land. The development of the mining industry in the Quapaw Agency has been no exception to this general rule. Our problems, how-ever, have not been many or particularly serious. The Quapaws were allotted and patents issued by the United States Government in 1895. These patents contained a restriction against alienation for a pe-riod of twenty-five years. The effect of the restric-tion was to prevent the Indian from selling, leasing, or in any way encumbering his land. The Govern-ment, in a paternalistic spirit, sought to teach the Indian thrift and industry and to insure him a place of residence. This is evidenced by the first Leasing Act passed by Congress, which permitted only incom-petents and those physically disabled to lease their land for either agricultural or mining purposes. The able-bodied Indian was denied the right to lease. It soon became apparent to the Government, how-ever, that this was a mistaken policy, and in 1897 a General Leasing Act was passed by Congress and it was under this act that the mining industry in the Quapaw Agency was developed. The act, reads as follows: "That the allottees of land within the limits of the Qua- paw Agency, Indian Territory, are hereby authorized to lease their lands, or any part thereof, for a term not ex-ceeding three years, for farming or grazing purposes, or ten years for mining or business purposes. And said al-lottees and their lessees and tenants shall have the right to employ such assistants, laborers, and help from time to time as they may deem necessary: Provided, That when-ever it shall be made to appear to the Secretary of the Interior that, by reason of age or disability, any such allottee cannot improve or manage his allotment properly and with benefit to himself, the same may be leased, in the discretion of the Secretary, upon such terms and conditions as shall be prescribed by him. All acts and parts of acts inconsistent with this are hereby repealed." It was the interpretation of this Act that gave rise to our first serious problems. It will be noted that the Act says that "allottees of land" within the limits of the Quapaw Agency are authorized to lease their land. Thus, the first question was presented by the use of the term "allottee," and the question was as to whether or not Congress intended to limit the Quapaw Indian to the leasing of his own allotment or did Congress mean that the term "allottee" was synonym-ous with "Indian" and intend to give the Indian a right to lease both his allotment and his inherited land and was an Indian without an allotment an "allottee" even though he was a member of the Qua-paw tribe and the owner of the Quapaw land by in-heritance, and not being an allottee, could he lease his inherited Quapaw land under the authority granted in this Act?

Recently the U.S. Bureau of Mines has undertaken a research project to develop the mechanical roof pulling technique as a method for evaluating the effectiveness and the comparative advantages and disadvantages of various roof bolting systems for underground coal mines, based on the characteristic responses of bolted mine roofs to a prescribed external loading system. Two preliminary experiments of the test method were conducted in the Bureau's Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) at Bruceton, Pa., and further trials are underway. The fundamental concept of the test method, the design of test rigs, and the experimental results are summarized in this progress report.

IN a previous publication1 1200°C isothermal phase diagram sections were given for the Cr-CO-Ni, Cr-Co-Fe, Cr-Co-Mo, and Cr-Ni-Mo ternary systems, in which the a phase formed narrow, elongated solid solution fields. The present investigation is concerned with the 1200°C isothermal sections of the Co-Ni-Mo, Co-Fe-Mo, and Ni-Fe-Mo ternary systems. A prominent feature of these systems is the presence of narrow, elongated µ phase fields. The crystal structure of the phase designated as µ both here and in the previous publication1 was determined by Arnfelt and Westgren.2 For the (CO, W)µ phase, named by them Co,W, (and also frequently designated as a), these authors found that the crystal system is hexagonal-rhombohedra1 and the space group is D53d — R3,. Westgren and Mag-neli3 later found that isomorphous phases exist in the Fe-W and the Fe-Mo systems (these phases are often referred to as < and E, respectively). Henglein and Kohsok4 stated that the phase described by them as Co7Mo,; (otherwise frequently designated as c) is also isomorphous with the above three. The Co-Fe-Mo system was investigated at 1300°C by Koester and Tonn,5 who found a continuous series of solid solutions between (Co, MO)µ and (Fe, MO)µ Koester6 also indicated similar uninterrupted solid solutions in the Ni-Fe-Mo system. However, since the Ni-Mo binary system does not have a phase isomorphous with F, Koester&apos;s diagram is expected to be erroneous. No data appear to be available in the literature concerning the Co-Ni-Mo system. The face-centered cubic (austenitic) solid solut,ions of iron, nickel, and cobalt, which are quite extensive in all three systems at 1200°C, are here designated as the a phase. The body-centered cubic (ferritic) solid solutions, based on iron, are designated in this report as the ? phase, in conformity with the nomenclature used previously.&apos; Experimental Procedure The alloys were prepared by vacuum induction melting in zirconia and alumina crucibles. The lot analyses for the metals used have been given.&apos; The number of alloys prepared was 46 for the Co-Ni-Mo system, 65 for the Co-Fe-Mo system, and 113 for the Ni-Fe-Mo system. The compositions of these alloys were selected with due regard to maximum usefulness in locating phase boundaries. The alloy specimens were annealed at 1200°C in an atmosphere of purified 92 pct helium and 8 pct hydrogen mixture. Alloys consisting almost entirely of the face-centered cubic austenitic a phase, or of the body-centered cubic ferritic c phase were double-forged with intermediate annealing. The double-forged specimens were then final annealed for 90 hr at 1200 °C and quenched in cold water. Alloys containing considerable amounts of any of the other phases could not be forged. Such specimens were annealed for 150 hr at 1200°C and quenched. Microscopic specimens of all alloys were prepared by mechanical polishing, in many cases followed by electrolytic polishing. Description of the polishing and etching procedures used and tabulation of the intended compositions of the alloys prepared are being published in two N.A.C.A. Technical Notes.7,8 , Many of the alloys were analyzed chemically and, in general, the results are in excellent agreement with the intended compositions. X-ray diffraction samples were prepared by filing or crushing homogenized alloy specimens and by reannealing the obtained powders in evacuated and sealed quartz tubes. After annealing for 30 min at 1200°C the tubes were quenched into cold water. X-ray diffraction patterns were made with unfiltered chromium radiation at 30 kv, using an asymmetrical focusing camera of high dispersion. X-ray diffraction and microscopic methods were used jointly to identify the phases present in each specimen. The amounts of the phases in each alloy were estimated microscopically. The phase boundaries were located by the disappearing phase method. The results were used to construct 1200°C isothermal sections for the three ternary phase diagrams. The accuracy of the location of the phase boundaries determined in this manner is estimated to approximately ±1 pct of each component. The portion of the three phase diagrams lying between the µ, P, and 6 phases on the one hand, and the molybdenum corner on the other, has not been investigated. Recently Metcalfe reported0 a high temperature allotropic form of cobalt on the basis of dilatometric results and of cooling curves. In the present work no attempt was made to search for the new phase in the cobalt corner of the Co-Fe-Mo and Co-Ni-Mo systems. No alloy was prepared with more than 80 pct Co; the alloys used were intended to locate the boundary of the a phase saturated with cL. The microstructures of the quenched a alloys near the cobalt COrner gave no suggestion of an in-suppressible transformation On quenching. The location of the boundaries of the a + ? two-phase fields in the Fe-Ni-Mo and Fe-CO-MO systems was determined entirely by the microscopic method. I. EXPERIMENTAL FLOTATION CONCENTRATION INTRODUCTION EARLY in 1914 it was decided to test, on a fairly large scale, the treatment by flotation of Anaconda slime and mill tailing. For this purpose a standard-type Minerals. Separation machine was installed at the Washoe Reduction Works during May and June, 1914. This was followed by the. installation of a full-size Callow pneumatic machine plant. Experiments were also made, on a smaller scale, with the Froment, the Towne, the Fields, and the Anaconda flotation machines. The last-named machine was developed at this plant. In addition to the tests made in the standard-type Minerals Separation machine some tests were made using a Minerals Separation machine of the sub-aeration type. During the series of experiments a large variety of oils was tested. Experiments were also conducted using both round-table feed and tailing to determine whether it would be better to displace the round tables by flotation for the treatment of the slime, or to supplement the round tables by flotation of the round-table tailing. A series of tests was also made on the treatment of the mill tailing by grinding followed by flotation to determine the relative merits of flotation and leaching for the treatment of this product. In addition, flotation tests were made on mixtures of mill tailing and slime. The round-table feed referred to above is the total slime from the mill. It contains about 35 per cent. colloidal solids and approximately 90 to 95 per cent. of the total solids will pass through 200 mesh (0.067 mm.). It assays from 2.3 to 2.6 per cent. Cu. The mill tailing referred to above is the total discard from the mill, exclusive of the slime. It is all finer than 2 mm. and about 90 to 95 per cent. will remain on 0.25 mm. It assays about 0.60 per cent. Cu. A brief summary of the experimental flotation results follows:
