In 1930 the late Dr. Reinhardt Thiessen set up a method of microscopic analysis and type classification of coal that has since been followed as standard practice in the coal-petrography laboratory of the Bureau of Mines. Thiessen's terminology which designated the constituent parts of coal in terms of botanical origin was introduced in 1920.1 The technique, however, of preparing a completely representative series of thin sections from a column sample of coal for use in making quantitative determinations of coal components with a microscope was developed about 10 years later by Thiessen and coworkers G. C. Sprunk and H. J. O'Donnell.2 Complete thin-section analyses subsequently have been made of 126 column samples of various ranks and types of American coals. The data and information were assembled from these thin-section studies and published in a large number of reports dealing chiefly with investigations of the coking and hydrogena-tion properties of certain American coals. In the years following adoption of Thies-sen's method, a considerable amount of work was done in collecting column samples of many coals, making routine thin-section analyses of these, interpreting the results, and finding practical application for the information in other fields of coal research. The many reports and papers covering the work in coal petrography, however, offer very little discussion that can be considered as critical appraisal of the technique. Criticism outside the Bureau most often has voiced questioning opinions concerning the accuracy of the method used of measuring coal components microscopically and classifying the coal into arbitrary types on the basis of the quantitative determinations. The principal purpose of this paper is to discuss in some detail and present data showing the results of certain investigative work done in the petrography laboratory on the accuracy of the Bureau's method of microscopic measurement of components in coal thin sections. Data from microscopic analyses on file made by G. C. Sprunk and H. J. O'Donnell were freely used in the investigation, and a table of columnar analyses from an unpublished manuscript by Sprunk is included in this paper for reference. In the course of the experimental work a method was developed for measuring in-strumentally with a planimeter the components shown in micrographs of selected thin sections. Measuring coal components with a planimeter furnished useful information for studying the accuracy of microscopically measuring the same components in thin sections. In attempting to summarize and pick out the outstanding development,s in refinery engineering during the past 12 or 13 months, one is immediately impressed by the great strides that have taken place. It is, of course, difficult to obtain the proper perspective with the old year so fresh in our minds, and if relatively minor improvements seem to be given equal recognition with those of magnitude, it will be because the nature of the human mind causes us to place the trivial incidents of today with the important things of yesterday. For instance, the Twenly-Second Semiannual Motor Gasoline Survey (December, 1930) of the U. S. Bureau of Mines shows that the total gasoline yield per barrel of crude increased from 39.6 per cent.. in 1929 to 41.99 per cent. in 1930. This latter fact may appear rather confusing since the production of high-gravity crudes has been steadily increasing. However, during the past yew there has been a reduction in gasoline end point of approximately 8" F. which roughly corresponds to about 1.0 per cent. yield from the crude oil. It appears, therefore, that, if the gasoline mere based on a corresponding distillation basis 1930 would show better yields from the crude than 1929. Cracked gasoline increased from 14.83 per cent. in 1929 to 17.46 per cent. in 1930. Percentage of total gasoline from cracking stills has doubled since 192.5, thus indicating the extent to which this phase of refining has advanced over past years. Replacement of the old shell still batteries by a pipe still and single flash system, with an efficient fractionating tower, has proved advantageous both in fuel consumption and in decreasing space required for the installation. Considerable activity has been shown in the field of vapor-phase cracking, with the development of several new types of units. The production of a product with a high antiknock value makes the vapor-phase processes particularly attractive. Cracking equipment has shown a marked advance with the development of corrosion-resisting alloys. Nickel, chromium and vanadium have shown interesting possibilities, but as yet are fairly expensive. Experiments on latent hardening were peyformed by compressing single crystals along a direction perpendicular to the tension axis. The slope and length of easy glide in the tension test were found to depend only on prior deformation in the same slip plane. Prior deformation on a different slip plane changes the stress level of the resulting stress-strain curve. The yield points appearing upon reloading after prior extension and unloading were related to the end of easy glide. SEVERAL researchers have studied the latent hardening due to deformation of a crystal by slip on a slip System after prior deformation. These experiments can be divided into those in which the prior deformation was on the same plane as the subsequent and those in which the two deformation processes were in different planes. In the former category are the experiments of Buckley and Entwistle,1 Parker and washburn,2 and Haasen and Kelly.3 The latter case has not been studied systematically; it was the main purpose of this investigation to produce this type of latent hardening and explain the results in terms of the existing theories of work hardening. In general, tension producing slip on a certain slip system can be preceded by tension, transverse compression or longitudinal compression, each with predictable dislocation movement and intersection. The intersection of dislocations can lead to glissile or sessile jogs, Cottrell-Lomer locks and other sessile dislocations. The effect on the stress-strain curve could depend on which combination of the former mechanisms is operating. Haasen and Kelly3 have studied the yield points which occur in aluminum and nickel single crystals upon reloading after prior unloading in a tension experiment. They attributed this effect to the anchoring of dislocations occurring during unloading. As Cottrell and stokes4 have shown that dislocations cutting through the "forest" could only lead to reversible changes, they attributed the anchoring to the formation of sessile dislocations during unloading. However, different kinds of sessile dislocations could be formed during unloading, and it was the purpose of this experiment to determine whether Cottrell-Lomer locks are responsible for the yield effect and for the end of easy glide. The case where a longitudinal compression is followed by tension along the same axis is commonly referred to as a Bauschinger test. This type of effect was studied by Buckley and Entwistle1 on aluminum single crystals and by Parker and washburn2 on zinc single crystals. In such a test, the tension and the compression activate the same slip plane with opposite slip directions. The use of sideways compression in the present experiments permits the activation of different types of slip systems and the study of their effect on the easy glide region and on the transition between the elastic and easy glide region. The theory of seeger5 for the flow stress in fee materials is applied to explain the latent hardening. EXPERTMENTAL PROCEDURE All the single crystals used in this investigation had an axial orientation close to <210>, called the "0.5" orientation. This is the orientation for which the tensile axis is 45 deg from both the slip plane and the slip direction. The single crystals were grown from the melt under a helium atmosphere using milled graphite boats,=at a rate of 8.6 mm per min. The silver used in the experiment was 99.98 pct pure. The single crystals had a square cross section about 0.9 by 0.9 cm and a length of 14 cm. The orientation of the specimen was determined within ±2 deg by the Laue back-reflection method. The specimens were annealed at 940&apos; ± 2°C in a helium atmosphere for 24 hr and then furnace cooled over a period of 7 hr. The specimens were electropolished in a solution of 9 pct KCN in water. The specimens were tested in a soft-type tensile machine (the load is prescribed) up to 3 pct strain. The stress was increased continuously at approximately 30 g per mm2 per min. The strain was measured over a 5 cm gage length with a mechanical extensometer employing an optical lever. The strain and stress were measured with accuracies of i 2 X 10-5 and ± 2 g per mm2, respectively. The remainder of the stress-strain curve up to 20 pct strain was obtained in a hard-type tensile machine (the strain rate is prescribed). The strain and the stress were measured in that machine with an accuracy of ±2 pct. The compression tests were performed in the hard-type machine using accurately machined steel blocks without lubrication. The blocks were used so as to apply a uniform compression over a length of 13 cm. The strains were measured on the hard-type machine and with a micrometer.

A laboratory investigation has been made of the effects of mud hydraulics upon the formation and erosion of mud filter cakes. The tests were conducted to simulate drilling conditions as nearly as possible. The formation of mud filter cake in a drilling well does not proceed at a uniform and unbroken rate. Instead, the rate of cake accumulation depends upon whether or not the mud is being circulated. If the mud column is quiescent, filter cake formation is a smooth function of the filtration characteristics of the system. If the mud is being circulated filter cake formation depends not only upon the filtration characteristics of the mud but also upon the erosive action of the flowing mud column Filter cakes formed during continuous mud circulation were observed to reach an equilibrium thickness after several hours&apos; circulation. Mud circulation was maintained at a constant volumetric rate throughout each experiment. The fluid velocity at equilibrium cake thickness was dependent upon the thickness of the filter cake. Muds having exceptionally high water loss deposited thick filter cakes in spite of very high eroding velocities. The muds having good filtration characteristics deposited thin filter cakes at equilibrium circulating velocities well within tile range of those in a drilling well. It was observed that filter cakes deposited during stagnant filtration were quite difficult to erode by mud circulation. The - rate of crosion computed from the rate of filtrate accumulation after equilibrium cake thickness had been reached was in reasonable agreement with the rate of erosion obtained by direct observation. Continuous mud circulation usually caused the permeability of the filter cake to decrease with time. INTRODUCTION Many of the difficulties encountered during tile drilling of a well have been attributed to the loss of water from the mud and the attendant deposition of solids upon the walls of the hole. Past experience has shown that a reduction of the filtration rate of the drilling fluid eliminates or greatly reduces these difficulties. Definite filtration requirements, however, are hard to establish for a given set of conditions. This is due. in part, to the fact that the usual filtration test performed upon mud doe? not simulate well conditions as closely as desirable. The filtration characteristics of a mud are customarily determined by means of the standard low-pressure API wall-building tester.&apos; In this instrument a filter cake is deposited upon a horizontal bed under a pressure differential of 100 psi. The rnud is quiescent during the filtration period. In actual practice. mud filtration occurs within a well under quite different conditions. One of the major differences is that mud flows upward across the filter bed as the filter cake forms. This undoubtedly produces a change in the filter cake which cannot be reflected in the results of the API test. The laboratory work described in this paper had as its primary objective a better understanding of the influence of mud circulation upon the thickness and ,characteristics of the filter cakes deposited under conditions similar to those existing in a drilling well. ANALYSIS OF PROBLEM Once a permeable formation is penetrated by the bit, filtrate from the mud flows into the formation. &apos;he mud solids plaster against the walls of the hole, forming a filter cake. If the mud column is stagnant, that is, if it is not being circulated. the filter cake will increase in thickness until the hole is filled. Prior to the time that the hole is filled, the thickness of filter cake existing at any given time will be a function of the filtration characteristics of the mud, the temperature, and the pressure differential. The effects of these variables have been investigated in the past for both flat bed filtration2&apos;3 and for radial filtration.&apos; When the mud is circulated in a hole in which a filter cake i. being deposited. some of the solids that would ordinarily deposit in the filter cake will be carried away by the eroding action of the mud. This will limit. filter cake thickness. Some work has been done to determine the effect of flow upon the filtration rate in a circulating mud system&apos; but little work has been done upon the factors which determine the filter cake thickness existing in a circulating system. On first sight it would appear that the major factors controlling filter cake formation in a circulating system should be: 1. The rate of deposition of solids from the mud. 2. The erosive force that the flowing mud exerts upon the filter cake. &apos;A. The erodabilitv of the filter cake. 4. Any change in filter cake characteristics attributable to the scouring action of the mud. Professor Ruff&apos;s most illuminating paper&apos; describing his extremely valuable investigation of the carbon-iron equilibrium diagram assigns definite temperatures to certain very important lines in the diagram, viz.: the eutectic temperature EB (Fig. 1) and the " near-eutectic " temperature E&apos;B&apos;, but without indicating clearly enough the reasoning which warrants these assignments. These temperatures are of such primary importance that it is well to indicate the apparent gaps in the reasoning, in the hope that they may be filled in. In his diagram, Fig. 1, the point X and the liues B&apos;D&apos;lII represent the experimental results reached by Ruff and Goecke;a AB, AEB, and SE represent the liquidus, the solidus, and the solubility of the carbon in solid austenite in the absence of graphite according to Gutowsky,3 AB being also in accordance with Spiecker&apos;s data; S&apos;E&apos; the solubility of carbon in solid austenite in the presence of graphite according to Ruer and Iljin;5 GS the line A3 after Ooerens and Meyer; 6 and EBC the true eutectic line as inferred by Prof. Ruff from Gutowsky&apos;s data. The principal events during the year consisted in the exploitation of the Kirkuk field, the regular operation of the four-million-ton pipe line to the Mediterranean, and the discovery of low-gravity oil on three other structures in the West Tigris (Shergat) area. The Iraq Petroleum Co., Ltd. continued the systematic exploitation and exploration of its Kirkuk field, maintaining a carefully unitized operation. Bottom-hole pressure differentials and low gas-oil ratios were maintained. All crude was produced by flowing The cleaning up following the construction of the Mediterranean pipe line, which began deliveries in August, 1934, was completed during the first quarter of 1935. The line easily maintained its rated capacity for the remainder of the year. The Mosul Oilfields, Ltd., through its operating subsidiary, the B.O.D., Ltd., expanded its exploratory organization from 9 to 16 drilling rigs and discovercd 20" A.P.I. crude on the Sadid, Hibbarah and Qasab anticlines. Whether these discoveries will be commercial pools remains to be proved. The Qaiyarah-Najmah-Jawan field, which was discovered by the I.P.C. in 1928, was extended arid production was found in the Eo-Cretaceous as well as the "Main Limestone" (Eocene, Oligocene and Lower Miocene). Gas caps were found under each of the crests of the West Tigris structures. Negotiations are in progress between the Mosul Oilfields, Ltd. and the Iraq Government for the extension of the Anatolian Railway from the Turkish border to Mosul, with a view to tanking the heavy West Tigris crude to the Mediterranean. The subsidiary of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co., Ltd.&apos;, the Khanaqin Oil Co., Ltd., continued to operate its Naft Khaneh field near the Iranian (Persian) border to supply the local Iraq market through the Rafidain Oil Co., Ltd. Somewhat more than 28 million barrels of crude was produced in Iraq during 1935. The following paragraphs have been extracted from a recent publication of the U. S. Department of Commerce; Miscellaneous Series, No. 65, " German Trade&apos; and the War, " which portrays the industrial, commercial and economic conditions of Germany, at the present time, and has been compiled largely from sources published in Germany. Iron and Steel The Krupp company, the greatest of the German munition works, was faced at the outbreak of the War with the disappearance of its great international business, but this was amply compensated by orders from Germany and her allies, and the activity of the company has been greatly extended. The general meeting of December 1914, voted an increase in the capital to 250,000,000 marks. The gross profits of the company, amounting to 61,900,000 marks in 1912-13, have been more than doubled during the war. The gross profits were 128,260,000 marks in 1914-15 and 143,360,000 in 1915-16. Large sums have been written off; 10,000,000 marks have been placed in the pension fund during the war, and 5,000,000 were appropriated for workmen&apos;s dwellings in 1915. Thirteen million marks have been devoted to war assistance in the last three years. The assets of the company were valued at 967,000,000 marks at the end of 1916. For the year 1916-17, the company paid a dividend of only 10 per cent., but set aside 85,425,000 marks for depreciation. The Bismarckhütte in Upper Silesia, capitalized at 16,000,000 marks, with a bonded indebtedness of 7,907,500 marks in 1913-14, reported 3,912,000 marks of net revenue from operation for that year. During the three years of war the revenue increased successively to 8,077,000, 11,805,000, and 16,994,000 marks. While the capital remained unchanged, and the bonded indebtedness was but slightly reduced, the dividends paid during the last four years were increased from 9 per cent. in 1913-14 to 15, 25, and 30 per cent. during the war. During the year 1916-17 the amount written off, chiefly on the works and plant account, was 10,553,000 marks, or nearly as much as the total set aside during the three preceding years. The turnover for that year reached a sum many times the amount of the capital. At the end of 1916 the company&apos;s shares were quoted at 275, as against 144 at the end of 1913.

The object of this paper is to describe the present status and possil~ilities of liquid oxygen as an explosive based upon the investigations, research and practical work of the Ingersoll-Rand Co., and of the Air Reduction Co., from early in 1922 to date. The following work was done. 1. A study of the history and physical theory of L. 0. X. as an explosive. (No attempt will be made in this paper to give the history or theory, as this has already been covered by the literature on the subject.) 2. An investigation of the use and the practice with L. 0. X. in the iron mines of Lorraine where L. 0. X. has its largest application in Europe. Although L. 0. X. is extensively employed in the iron mines of Lorraine, many of the mines using it exclusively, and blasting with it a total of approximately three million tons of iron ore per year, the fact that the mining practice in Lorraine1 is to drill comparatively shallow holes and blast only a few holes at a time, renders the data obtained there of very little value in estimating the possibility of replacing dynamite with L. 0. X. in American mining methods. In fact, in the iron mines in Lorraine, L. 0. X. replaced black powder, or its equivalent. 3. Laboratory research work on properties of absorbent materials. 4. Work in the Bureau of Mines explosive laboratory at Pittsburgh, Pa., on the properties of L. 0. 3. cartridges. 5. Practical work underground with L. 0. X. cartridges in the Kitherbee-Sherman iron mines at Mineville, N. Y. 6. Practical work in the quarries of the Calcite Quarry Co., Myers-town, Pa. 7. Practical blasting in several quarries and open-pit mines.

Within the last ten years the progressive party of China, headed by Li Hung Chang, the Viceroy of Chi-Li, has been making great efforts to develop the mining resources of that country, and particularly those that are within reasonable distances of the sea-board. Attention was first paid to the coal-deposits, especially those at KaiPing, which have been placed on a profitable basis with an output of 1500 tons per day, under the energetic management of Mr. Claude Kinder, M.I.C.E., and the successful financiering of Tong King Sing. These coal-mines were described in a report by Kwong Yung Kwang, edited as a paper for the Institute (Duns., xvi., 95.) The use of large vibrating screens presents unique challenges to the screen manufacturer, the plant designer, and the plant operator. The design of vibrating structures that span greater unsupported distances is critical to the reliability of a screen subjected to billions of fatigue cycles. Larger percentages of total plant production become dependent upon fewer, larger vibrating screens. Plant designers and operators must plan for equipment maintenance in a manner which optimizes the production availability of large vibrating screens.

Seldom in history has any industry undergone such radical and rapid change as that experienced by coal. Since 1947, when bituminous coal production reached an all-time high of 631 million tons, the industry has faced market problems not believed possible prior to the build-up of the great market demand occasioned by the wartime emergency and post-war recovery period. Subsequently, it suffered practically complete loss of the formerly huge railroad fuel market to dieselization; natural gas expansion ate into many markets; and oil took a heavy toll. Although anthracite, on the other hand, did not have a record year in 1947, it did attain a production figure of 57 million tons. Competitive forces since then have hit this fuel harder than bituminous coal. As we are aware, most prognosticators have pointed to a glowing long-range future for coal, with some forecasters estimating coal production by 1975 to be as high as 800 million tons. The largest increase in the use of coal in future years is expected to come from expansion of the industry&apos;s two largest growth markets-steel and the electric utilities. Optimists would have us believe that coal need merely bide its time to be carried to prosperity by the increased demands of these two basic customers. But the coal industry knows from bitter experience that even "assured" markets-as the railroads and domestic consumers once were-can be lost through lack of progress and lack of research. And coal&apos;s projected growth markets are not “assured.”

During 1967 wage settlements and strikes ran at a high rate and it has been estimated that union gains of 4 ½ % to 5% per year have been attained in many instances. When these events are coupled with the need to operate on lower grade and deeper deposits the need for technological advances in underground mining becomes obvious. Emphasis has been on ways to reduce the number of manshifts required per ton of product. Most significant advances have been made in rapid advance of primary mine openings, development of mobile, rubber-tired, front-end loaders and hauling units, high-speed drilling with rotary and rotary percussive units and a serious look at nuclear devices to break large volumes of ore cheaply. Boring Developments in bit manufacture and metallurgy have allowed continuous boring-type machines to be used on harder formations than was deemed feasible in the past. Hecla Mining Co. has been using raise boring equipment for drilling 9 7/8 in. diam pilot holes in raises which are later reamed in an upward direction to 48 in. diam. The machine used is a J. S. Robbins model 42R raise borer which has been used successfully to drill two relatively long 48-in. diam holes. The first was 520 ft in length at a dip of 76º, and the second was a 785-ft vertical hole.

MOST commercial alloys undergo changes in phase composition after casting. This is a natural result of the fact that the alloys are not in a state of phase equilibrium as cast and phase changes will therefore take place, with more or less rapidity, in an attempt to attain equilibrium. The practical aspect of aging in zinc-alloy die castings concerns the changes in physical properties and in dimensions that may accompany aging phase changes. Harmful alterations have been reduced to a minimum and zinc-alloy die castings are being produced today that are so stable with respect to dimensions and physical properties that they are entirely suitable for most practical purposes1. In the first paper2 of this series, and in this paper, aging phase changes of zinc alloy die castings have been investigated and the possible influence of these changes on dimensional changes of the castings has been evaluated and compared with the dimensional changes actually experienced. The change of dimensions has been selected for practical comparison in these papers because the effect of phase changes on the dimensions of a casting is directly calculable from X-ray crystal-analysis data of the phase structure. The die-casting alloys considered contain, in addition to zinc, 4 per cent of aluminum, about 0.03 per cent magnesium, and from 0 to 3 per cent of copper. It was shown in the former paper that the eutectoidal decomposition of the beta aluminum-zinc phase, while intrinsically capable of causing a considerable shrinkage, can have very little effect on the observed shrinkage of die castings because it takes place within a few days of aging, whereas the observed shrinkage continues for five weeks. Crude petroleum produced in the Texas Panhandle oil field is both an asphalt and a paraffin-base oil and is further characterized by being a high-gravity crude with an extremely high cold test,. E. R. JETTE*—The way this ternary was developed there are two directly determined points on each of the iso-thermals except the 700° isothermal, where I believe there is only one. How were the end points determined, and what was the basis for it? Whose work formed the basis for the silver copper line ? M. B. BEVER †—At most temperatures the authors determined three points of the isothermal line. For example it can be seen from Fig 3 and 4 how three points for the 600°C contour line were obtained. The authors took two additional points for each temperature from the copper-silver binary diagram contained in Hansen&apos;s volume on constitution diagrams. It is correct that the 700°C contour line is based only on one point in the ternary field which was found by a slight extrapolation of Fig 4. R. I. JAFFEE*—Are the tie lines representing phases in equilibrium parallel to the silver-copper boundary ? M. B. BEVER—Are you asking that as a matter of principle ? R. I. JAFFEE—I assumed that would follow from principle. I wonder if that is in accordance with the authors&apos; ideas too. M. B. BEVER—I do not believe the authors obtained any information on the tie lines in the two-phase field. Of course, in the limiting case of very low gold contents the tie-lines approach to the silver-copper boundary, but generally in the two-phase field I do not think that the tie-lines have to be parallel to the boundary. CRACKS which form in lead exposed to fluctuating stress frequently follow a rectangular pattern. It is well known that under ordinary atmospheric conditions these cracks are intercrystalline. On the other hand after fabrication the crystal grains in lead are in general irregular polygons. The observed facts appear to be mutually contradictory. Re-examination of some lead failures has confirmed that the rectangular cracks are intercrystal- line. It follows therefore that under fluctuating stress some of the grains lose their irregular outlines and become approximately regular polygons of cubic type. G. R. Gohn and W. C. Ellis* suggest that this is due to recrystallization during the life of the part, in such a way that the new grain boundaries are aligned at 45 deg to the longitudinal strain prior to the formation of the fatigue crack. The recovery of uranium from acid leach slurries by continuous ion exchange, or solvent extraction using sieve-plate pulse columns, is compared. Differences in processing costs are of prime concern and can be related to differences in the unit operations of the two methods, as well as the chemical and physical properties of the slurry. Parameters are defined for the operation of the solvent-in-pulp process and the design of the continuous ion exchange column. Pilot plant operating experience with both recovery systems is described, and an overall assessment of the relative costs is presented.
