The principle of airborne electroniagnetic prospecting is well-known. 'The basic geonhysicai texts in inost cases discuss the main elements involved in electromagnetic prospecting. However. there is ceriainlv iittle information available to the public concerning he present types of airborne eiectromagnerlc systenis being flown today by both contracting companies and some of the mining companies which have their own instruments. This is unfortunate since it is difficuit for those people not conducting such operations to understand thoroughly the iarge variation in the electromagnetic instrunlents available. Basically, the aeriai electromagnetic induction method utilizes a primary or transmitting coil through which is generated an alternating magnetic field at a frequents: generally of the range of 100 to 2000 cycies per sec. This primary field links with buried conductors and generates eddy currents within them. These eddy currents in themselves generate a secondary magnetic field of the same frequencv, but generally nut-of-phase with respect to the prinlarv field. This secondarv field is detected above the ground in the pick-up or receiver coil which is tuned to the frequency of the current applied to the primary transmitter coil. One of the main problems in the development of an airborne electromagnetic system is that of maintaining constant coupling between the cransmitting and receiving coil systems. Any variations in the coupling due to relative motion between the two coils will result in an in-phase signal being induced in the receiver coil. [However, any variation in the coupling does not result in an out-of-phase signal change in the receiver coil. The first airborne eiectromagnetic svsteins which were developed utilized a large prlniarv coil set up on the aircraft with the receiving coil being towed behind in a bird, generally at the end of a cable of about 500 ft. in length. It is possible with such a system to record the out-of-phase or quadrature responses more readily than the in-phase re-sponse. One system utilizes a dual frequency method, wnereby the out-of-phase responses at two frequencies are recorded. Another system used today records a single-frequency olrt-of-phase response. Recentlv home companies have succeeded in measuring from ne air both the out-of-phase and the in-phase components. The usefulness of recording in-phase is weil-known, but unfortunately this is difficult to obtain in any towed-bird system. In order to measure the true in-phase signal, the most straightforward system is that in which both the transmitter and receiver coils .Ire affixed in space so that there is little or no relarive motion between the two coils. THE FLIGHT SYSTEM The particular system which Canadian Aero Service is using at present is mounted on a Sikorsky S-55 helicopter (Fig. 1). A record of both the in-phase and out-of-phase responses is made at a frequency of 390 cycles per sec. The transmitter coil is set on a boom mounted in the front of the helicopter; the receiver is set on a tail boom extending back from the helicopter. Separation between these coils is about 65 ft. The two coils are mounted in a vertical co-axial relationship. Having the transmitting coil in a vertical plane ensures that maximurn coupling will occur with vertical conductors rather than flat-lying conductors. Having them mounted as they are in a co-axial relationship on the helicopter ensures that maximum response will occur when the flight direction is orthogonal to the strike direction of a given conductor. The Grand Isle sulfur mine is located in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately seven miles off the coast of Grand Isle, Jefferson Parish, La. The deposit is on acreage covered by oil, gas, and mineral leases originally issued in favor of Humble Oil & Refining Co. by the State of Louisiana which were continued, maintained, and redesignated by the U.S. Department of the Interior after passage of the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act. The sulfur deposit was discovered in 1949 when Humble Oil & Refining Co. penetrated more than 200 ft of sulfur-bearing limestone in a zone between 1813 and 2075 ft below sea level. In 1954, Humble drilled ten more sulfur prospect holes, eight of which encountered sulfur ore. On September 19, 1956, Freeport Sulphur Co. acquired from Humble Oil & Refining Co, the sulfur rights underlying the tracts, and the actual design of the installation began the same month. The first structural contract was awarded in December 1957 and offshore erection began in June 1958. The initial phase of construction has been completed and production by the Frasch process commenced in April 1960. The estimated total cost of the project is $30 million, of which $8 million is the extra cost incurred by the necessity of offshore operations. More than $22 million was expended before production was started. GEOLOGY OF DEPOSIT Grand Isle is the third largest sulfur deposit in the U.S. The orebody embraces several hundred acres, but its outer limits are yet to be defined to the northeast, east, and south. Most Gulf Coast sulfur deposits occur in a caprock mantle of calcite (referred to as limestone), anhydrite, and occasionally gypsum, which covers the apex of an intrusive mass of salt. Commercial quantities of sulfur are usually confined to the calcite or limestone member. Most often such limestone is completely enclosed by dense anhydrite below and impervious sediments above, which effectively form a closed reservoir. The depth of the Grand Isle orebody ranges from 1800 ft to 2500 ft below sea level. Within the present boundary, the sulfur-bearing limestone varies in thickness from 220 ft to 425 ft, while the sulfur content varies an average of about 15 pct in the leanest hole to an average of about 30 pct in the richest. Rock containing less than 5 pct sulfur is not classed as ore, and holes assaying less than 20,-000 long tons per acre of sulfur in place are not considered commercial offshore. The sulfur enrich-

Since the Third Theory of Comminution was presented eight years ago (I) it has found increasing use in crushing and grinding problems. The practical utility of its wok index equation is quite generally acknowledged (2). However, its theoretical basis has been questioned in at least three technical articles (3) (4) ('). The purpose of this paper is to present experimental proof that it is scientifically correct. Particles under compressive stress are strained and deformed. They absorb strain energy, and when this locally exceeds the breaking strength, a crack tip forms. The surrounding strain energy flows to the crack tip, which rapidly extends and splits the rock, releasing the strain energy as heat. The initial energy flow causes additional crack tips in highly strained areas. If the compression is rapidly applied by impact, crack tips may form before the strain energy has reached equilibrium in the particle, thus decreasing the total work input required for breakage. The energy necessary to break is essentially the energy necessary to produce crack tips, since the energy necessary to extend the cracks to breakage is already present as strain energy in the deformed particles. After breakage nearly all of this energy appears as heat. The crack length cannot be measured directly. However, in particles of regular and similar shape the crack tip length is considered as equal to the crack depth, or crack extension necessary to break, so that the crack length equals the square root of one-half of the surface area. The Third Theory states that the useful work done in crushing and grinding is directly proportional to the total length of the new cracks formed. It can be confirmed by showing that a constant work input produces a constant length of new cracks when reducing the same material to different product sizes. This is done in the present paper on a wide variety of material. The constant work input was supplied by one revolution of the 12" x 12" laboratory ball mill used in making grindability tests by the Allis-Chalmers method (12) (13) The new crack lengths produced per mill revolution were measured from all available grindability test results at 28, 35, 48, 65, and 100 mesh on fifteen different ores, and were found to remain substantially constant for each ore at all mesh sizes. A new technique is used for the measurement of crack lengths. Size distribution plots of the mill feed and product are made by the Third Theory method (9) and the crack lengths are obtained from these plots by the procedure described in the present paper. The energy input required to produce a unit length is of fundamental importance in the size reduction of brittle solids. The crack length Cr is expressed in centimeters per cubic centimeter of solid material. It bears a definite relationship to the external surface area of the crushed or ground solid. A uniform particle shape must be assumed before the surface area and crack length can be evaluated. In this paper it is assumed that the relationship between the surface area and the particle volume of a particle d microns in diameter is the same as that of cube d microns on a side. The external surface areas of particles with a cubical breakage probably agree approximately with this rule, and correction factors can be applied when physical measurements of the surface areas are available for comparison. However, the assumption of equivalent cubes has been found satisfactory for most calculation purposes. Assuming equivalent cubes, one cubic centimeter of particles d microns in diameter will have a crack length Cr of v30.000/d centimeters, and a surface area of 60,000/d square centimeters. The specific crack length is thus equal to the square root of one-half the specific surface area. Where Sa is the surface area in square centimeters per gram and Sg is the specific gravity of the ground solid, then Cr = vSg . Sa/2 = 173.2/ vd (1)

Specimens of Ti-155A (Ti-5Al-1.3Fe-1.3Cr-1.2Mo), Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-4Al-3Mo-1V were hydrogenated, aged to high strength levels, and subjected to notched stress-rupture tests and tensile tests at two strain rates. Both Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-155A were relatively unaffected by hydrogen in amounts exceeding those found in commercially -produced material. Inconsistencies in the data and a relatively low initial level of ductility prevented an accurate determination of the hydrogen tolerance for aged Ti-4Al-3Mo-1V, but there was no evidence that this alloy was any more susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement than Ti-155A and Ti-6A1-4V. THE metallurgical literature has been considerably enriched in the past five years by the publication of the results of many investigations which were concerned with the effects of hydrogen on titanium and its alloys. Although it is not the authors' intention to provide a complete literature survey of this vast field, it is worthwhile to summarize briefly some of the important factors which influence the embrittling phenomenon in a - B alloys. Some of the influencing factors are those of strain rate, temperature, and composition. Hydrogen embrittlement in a - B titanium alloys is now believed to be a strain-induced phenomenon, and whether or not embrittlement occurs at high hydrogen levels depends largely upon whether sufficient time is available for hydride precipitation. This condition is fulfilled by tensile testing at very slow strain rates or by rupture testing smooth or, preferably, notched specimens over relatively long periods. Conveniently, maximum embrittlement occurs at or near room temperature. The presence B - stabilizing elements, in amounts sufficiently small to prevent an all -B or nearly all -P condition, promotes hydrogen embrittlement and this tendency is believed to be related to the amount of a - B interfacial area present. Aluminum, by increasing the solubility of hydrogen in A titanium, greatly reduces the danger of hydrogen embrittlement, while oxygen has been shown to have detrimental effects.' The preceding discussion is based on experimental work performed on annealed a - P alloys. This early work has shown that annealed Ti-6A1-4V and Ti-155A are relatively insensitive to the embrittling effects of hydrogen.' Although no work has been reported on annealed Ti-4A1-3Mo-lV, the alloy would be expected to exhibit somewhat the same insensitiv-ity as Ti-155A. In sharp contrast to the voluminous literature on annealed titanium alloys is the paucity of reported investigations on materials receiving commercial heat-treatment cycles. To date, the most notable contributions in this field have arisen from two separate investigations on Ti-3Mn-1Fe-1Cr-1V-lMo, the so-called 3Mn comple~. These investigations

Part II of a four-part series on the history of steelmaking in the US, points out the inadequate safety and living conditions that existed in steel mills at the turn of the Century. Also defined are furnace and process developments. OPERATIONS in steel plants today are highly mechanized. Men work in light, clean, orderly melting shops, making it difficult for old timers to convince young men that primitive, hazardous conditions existed in steel plants at the turn of the century. Working conditions then were very poor as compared to present day standards. In small plants especially, sanitary, locker, and washroom facilities, first-aid practices and stations were un- known Accidents were frequent and severe. Workers had a fatalistic attitude toward getting hurt. He who had an accident was looked upon as a hero. A dirty bandanna often served as a bandage. Infections were frequent. Electric cranes were in their infancy and broke down often Cables had not as yet replaced chains. Pig iron and scrap iron were loaded by hand in the stockyard, and stockyard locomotives were un- known; mules served as the usual motive power. It was not unusual to see recorded a delay of ½ hr in charging a furnace because of a balky mule. Furnace operations A few plants had primitive charging machines, but most furnaces were charged by placing scrap or pig iron on the paddle of a long peel, which rested on a bar across the furnace door opening. Laborers at the handle end of the peel, using the bar as a fulcrum, would heave the material into the furnace by a down and sideward motion of the peel handle. In time they became expert in placing these materials in the furnace, but it was hard, hot work, and a long time was required for charging. Cold charges of 25 tons required more than 12 hr for melting and re- fining the steel. Ports, doors, and frames were not water cooled. The charging and working area in front of the furnace was covered with steel plates. They were hot and often warped by the intense heat of the un- insulated checker chambers directly below. In the summer, working conditions on the charging floor were almost unbearable. Silica refractories were of poor quality. Because of this, and the inadequate training of furnace men in fuel control and furnace operations, roofs, front and back walls, and ends burned out rapidly. Dolomite machines were unknown; consequently, furnace banks and hearths were fettled with dolomite by the use of hand shovels. The round system required six or more men. Each man took a shovelful of dolomite and, in his turn, deposited it on the back wall and bank by a dexterous forward swing and twist of the shovel. The upward swing of the shovel partially protected his face from the searing heat of the furnace coming out through the wide-open door. Considerable skill and stamina were required to do this job properly. Reverse valves, usually of the cast-iron butterfly type, were located below the charging floor. They were operated by long levers on the charging floor level men they became warped, because of heat and abuse, great strength and skill were required to reverse them. Furnace operations were difficult. The quality and quantity of producer gas coming from irregularly stoked, hand-operated gas producers was uncertain and unreliable. Palladium has a large capacity for the dissolution or occlusion of hydrogen; the gas also diffuses very rapidly through the metal. Palladium thimbles are widely used in the laboratory for purification of hydrogen by diffusion. The use of palladium filters could be extended to several large-scale applications if greater stability of the permeation process could be attained. In this paper a number of aspects contributing toward this goal are discussed, and new data on solubility and diffusivity are given. Palladium sheets of 0.005, 0.010, or 0.020 in. thickness were prepared by three procedures: casting and rolling, sintering palladium powder, and sintering palladium powder to which 0.1 pct thorium oxide had been added. Half-inch diam circular specimens were cut and clamped in a stainless steel holder provided with knife edges to seal the palladium sheet with soft copper gaskets. The seals were tested for leaks at l0-5 mm Hg. No difficulties from this source were encountered even after many temperature cycles in the system. The holder was silver-soldered to Kovar-glass seals and attached to the system through glass ball joints. Each joint was sealed with Apiezon wax and was adjacent to a cold trap. In several experiments the holders were fused directly into the system, eliminating the ball joints, to show that the wax did not affect the filter. Three filter holders were supported in holes in a stainless steel cylinder, which also acted as a temperature equalizing block inside the resistance wound furnace. The measuring thermocouple was inserted in one of the holders. A potentiometric controller with control thermocouple on the furnace heater winding maintained ± 0.2oC. Electrolytic hydrogen was purified and stored as shown in the flow diagram, Fig. 1. It could be admitted to either or both sides of the palladium specimens. Only a mechanical pump was used, for even high pumping speeds would not bring the pressure on the off-gas side of the filter below 10 to 50p Hg owing to the rapid hydrogen flow through the filters. A series of steady-state permeability studies allowed identification of several conditions of permeability loss. A constant fore pressure was maintained while the low-pressure face was pumped. After enough time had elapsed for a steady flow to be established the pump was cut off, and the rate of pressure increase in a thermostated bulb was measured to determine the flow rate. The time delay method of Daynes1,9 was adopted since it offered the possibility of determining solubilities and diffusivities. For each measurement both sides of the filter were evacuated for 15 min, which gave about 10-4mm Hg residual pressure. Hydrogen was admitted to one side or the other of the filter at a fixed pressure. The pressure on the off-gas side was observed as a function of time. A

The transformation of eutectoid beryllium bronze has been quantitatively investigated at 550° and 592°C, the temperature region where the products of p decomposition are a fine lamellar eutectoid and a coarse lamellar aggregate which replaces the fine eutectoid with prolonged annealing. Metallographic evidence indicates that the coarse lamellar aggregate forms preferentially in the most densely lamellated regions of the fine eutectoid and favors the hypothesis that the development of the coarse lamellar aggregate in the fine eutectoid is due to the occurence of a cellular segregation reaction. WHEN eutectoid beryllium bronze (Cu-94 pct, Be-6 pct) is isothermally transformed at high temperatures in the and y region after quenching from the fl field, the principal initial decomposition process is G one of growth of approximately spherical nodules composed of a number of lamellar colonies of the a and y phases. After the initial reaction has proceeded substantially or completely, depending on the transformation temperature, a second reaction occurs wherein the fine lamellar eutectoid is replaced by a coarser lamellar aggregate composed of the same oand yphases.' This reaction is not simply a spheroidization of the initial fine eutectoid but the nucleation and growth of a coarser, structurally different, and more stable distribution of the @and yphases. Fig. 1 illustrates the replacement of the initial fine lamellar structure by a coarse lamellar aggregate. The a phase is the dark mottled constituent; the light constituent the y phase. The phase diagram for the copper-rich end of the Cu-Be system2 is shown in Fig. 2. The a phase has the face-centered cubic structure characteristic of copper-rich solid solutions. The B phase is a disordered body-centered cubic structure, while the y phase is body-centered cubic, ordered (CsC1, B2 type). A. viswanathanS investigating Debye patterns of Cu-6 pct Be discovered that a transitory phase appeared on very rapid quenching from the /3 region which was absent when the quenching velocity was moderate. The phase could be assigned a body-centtred cubic structure with a lattice parameter of 2.876. Tempering at 100°C for 2 hr after quenching resulted in complete disappearance of the phase. The work of Fillnow and Mack' is the only previously published study of the isothermal transformation of eutectoid beryllium bronze. Their study elucidated the nature of decomposition at various subcritical temperatures in an exploratory fashion. The purpose of the research reported in this paper was principally to obtain quantitative information on the isothermal decomposition of the fl phase and to clarify the relationships existing between the fine lamellar eutectoid and the coarse lamellar aggregate. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The material used in this investigation was an almost eutectoid Cu-Be alloy bar furnished by D.J. Mack. The alloy had been melted under a protective carbon cover and centrigugally cast into a graphite mold preheated to 490 "C. Segregation was minimized by violent agitation during melting and pouring. The analysis of the casting was 93.85 pct Cu, 5.60 pet Be with traces of Si, Mg, Mn, Co, and Al. To determine the minimum soaking time necessary to insure specimen homogeneity, a number of specimens were held in the P region at 788OC for times fron 1 min to 12 hr and isothermally transformed at 550°C. The purification of commercial-purity tantalum powder by vacuum sintering in the temperature range 2600° to 2860°C has been investigated. Mixtures of tantalum oxide and tantalum carbide were sintered at 1800° and 2200°C. Tantalum bars containing 1 pct additions of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon. were sintered in the range 1800° to 2600°C. Anulyses were conducted on the sititeyed mixtures to determine the extent of removal of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon at each sintering condition. The mechanism for remova1 of each impurity, and the conditions necessary for preparing ductile tantalum by vacuum sintering are discussed. INTEREST in the refractory metals has been stimulated in recent years by the need for structural materials capable of operating at temperatures of 1100°C and higher. These metals include columbium (niobium) (mp 2468°C), molybdenum (mp 2620°C), tantalum (mp 2996°C), rhenium (mp 3160°C), and tung- sten (mp 3415°C). In addition to its high melting point, tantalum possesses the advantages of forming a solid, nonvolatile oxide at temperatures of interest and of being ductile and easy to fabricate. The classic method of consolidating tantalum from powder refined from the ores is by vacuum sintering at temperatures on the order of 2600°C. This sintering treatment both densifies the compacted powder bars and purifies the metal by causing impurities to boil out. The present work was undertaken to provide more quantative data on the relationship between sintering conditions and purity and to determine the mechanisms of impurity removal.

Dense, adherent, and ductile coatings of chromium can be applied to Molybdenum by selectively freezing out the chromium solute from a supersaturated copper-or tin-rich liquid alloy. The successful exploitation of this technique depends on the control of variables common to any freezing process. Under the most favorable combimtion of supersaturation, nucleation, and mass-transfey, coatings as thick as 0.004 in. can be obtained. In exploratory experiments it was found that a coating of chromium may be applied to molybdenum by immersing the molybdenum body in a supercooled copper-chromium or tin-chromium melt and selectively freezing out the contained chromium onto the molybdenum body. Supercooling of the liquid metal plating bath can be achieved by cooling, or the maintenance of thermal or concentration gradients in the melt. The technique is similar to conventional dip-plating procedures where the sample is immersed in a molten bath of the pure plating medium, except that in these studies, the plating medium consisted of a dilute solution of chromium in liquid tin or copper. The success of this method requires that the base material to be plated be isomorphous with the coating and insoluble in the plating bath. In addition, the plating bath, while having an appreciable solubility for the coating component, must have negligible solid solubility in the solid plate. Such relationships exist in the molybdenum-chromium, chromium-tin, and chromium-copper systems. Liquid tin and copper are satisfactory as the plating solvent, because although chromium is appreciably soluble in both of these liquid metals, solid inter-solubility is almost negligible, and no compound formation occurs. The same relationships exist between molybdenum and copper or tin except that the solubility of molybdenum in liquid tin or copper is insignificant. It is this combination of solubility relationships, as well as the completely isomorphous nature of the molybdenum-chromium system, which allows the formation of a chromium coating on molybdenum by the selective freezing mechanism. Since the main deterrent to the widespread use of molybdenum for high-temperature structural applications is its poor oxidation resistance, the formation of a dense and ductile chromium coating on molybdenum may well be of commercial significance. In addition, the basic principle of coating formation by selective freezing should be applicable to other metallic or even nonmetallic systems. The precipitation of the solute from a liquid metallic solution, for the formation of a protective coating, has not been previously considered in the literature. Frequently, however, a similar phenomenon has been described in the corrosion of metallic heat exchangers by liquid metals1 wherein temperature gradients in the liquid metal heat-transfer medium result in the formation of layers or deposits of metallic residue2 in the cooler portions of the system. Impregnating techniques using liquid baths have been tried as a plating process. Semchyshen and Barr, for instance, have successfully diffused chromium into molybdenum by immersing the molybdenum specimen in a liquid tin-chromium or copper-chromium alloy. This simple holding technique fails to produce a layer of pure chromium and requires prolonged immersion to allow for the diffusion-activated enrichment of the molybdenum. During the course of this investigation, most of the phase relations published for the copper-chromium4 and molybdenum-chromium4 systems, were found reliable. It was necessary, however, to investigate the solubilities of chromium and molybdenum in liquid tin as well as the solubility of molybdenum in liquid copper. These determinations were made by a simpie weight loss technique on materials of the same purity as used in the plating studies. A method for determining the disorientation between sub-grains that .share a common tilt or twist boundary from measurements on X-ray micrographs is described. The method may be applied to subgrains of almost any orientation having boundary angles in the range from about 1 min to 1 deg of arc. An adaption of the Berg-Barretl method has been made to allow calculation of small angles of about 1 min to 1 deg of arc: between adjacent subgrains from the relative displacement of their images on X-ray micrographs. schulz4 gave equations for determining subgrain disorientation where the axis of subgrain rotation and the reflecting crystal planes were parallel to the specimen surface. In our method, however, they need not be parallel and, indeed, may have va:rious orientations. His camera setup, involving a fine-focus X-ray tube for obtaining high resolution with continuous radiation, was different from the one used in the present investigation (a 1.2 x 1.2 mm effective source and characteristic radiation). The X-rays produced a slight magnification in the subgrain images in the Schulz method, but not in the present method. The commonly available type of X-ray tube used permitted relatively short exposure times with a fine-grained photographic plate, which could be magnified optically many times for the examination of small subgrains. The method is illustrated by results obtained on {110} tilt boundaries in a polygonized aluminum single crystal of 99.994 pct purity. The flat crystal was stretched 6 pct in tension and then heated at 500°C for a cumulative time of 5 hr. Earlier, cahn5 studied subgrains formed by polygonization in stretched and heated aluminum crystals. He observed kink bands to have well defined boundaries lying in (110) planes, at least in the early stages of deformation. Cahn found that the (110) tilt boundaries formed by polygonization were directly related to the lattice bending about the <211> axis which lay in the (111) slip plane perpendicular to the <110> slip direction. DESCRIPTION OF THE CAMERA Our camera was similar in detail to Honey-combe&apos;s.6 Unfiltered copper radiation was used at 35 kv, and 20 ma. With the particular specimen used here to illustrate the method, a 1.2 by 1.2 mm effective source and a distance of 780 mm from target to specimen were employed, giving a convergence of 5 min of arc in the primary beam. The distance was 9.5 mm from the specimen to film. The upper 1/2- by 1-in. portion of the front surface of the specimen was irradiated with the film in parallel position. Since the specimen had been inhomogeneously deformed, many regions were in a position to reflect characteristic radiation at the Bragg Angle. THE phase diagram of the Ge-Te system was first investigated by Klemm and Frischmuth.&apos; They arrived at the phase diagram shown in Fig. 1 indicating the presence of a peritectic phase boundary at the 50 at. pct Ge composition. Later, Schubert and Fricke2 obtained data which suggested to them the possible existence of a eutectic at about 55 at. pct Ge. In order to resolve these differences, we have carefully studied this system in the region 40 to 60 at. pct Ge using both the conventional thermal analysis technique and a new solidification technique.3y4 The alloys were prepared from semiconductor grade germanium and 99.999+ Te by reacting the elements in evacuated, graphite coated, vycor tubes. The samples were placed in a thermal analysis apparatus described elsewhere4 and cooling curves were taken of each alloy to determine the liquidus surface. In this laboratory study the problem of aerative conditioning to separate chalcopyrite and pyrite from cobaltite was simply effected with a sulfy-drate collector and pH by proper choice of mixing variables. It was shown that for a given impeller type and geometry, selectivity is governed by a relation between the Froude number and a modified power number multiplied by impeller tank-diameter ratio wherein the power factor is expressed as power intensity or horsepower per unit volume of contained pulp. In applying this approach to other systems, other criteria would be used in place of selectivity. The purpose of this paper is to show how solutions to problems of aerative conditioning of pulps may be enhanced by development of mixing parameters in a given system through application of a fundamental approach to agitation. The term aerative conditioning refers to a combination of processes which include mechanical gas dispersion, gas solution in the liquid phase, transport of dissolved gases and other reactants to the reaction zone, physico-chemico interaction within the liquid phase and/or at the solid surface, and, finally transport of products away from the reaction zone. Important elements of these processes are: 1) Air-Liquid Contact Area: This area limits the rate at which a given gas may dissolve in a given liquid. Thus, an aerative conditioning system should be designed for optimum gas dispersion. 2) Diffusional Factors: Such factors as concentration gradient, diffusion film thickness, and diffusivity may govern the rate at which dissolved constituents are transferred to the zone of interaction at a particle surface and the rate at which reaction products are transported therefrom. Thus, such systems would be designed for maximum turbulence to effect good mixing and to minimize diffusion film thickness. 3) Solids-Turbulent Liquid Contact Time: Sufficient time should be provided for interactions to take place at solid-liquid interfaces. The region of maximum turbulence for mechanical systems being in the impeller zone, it is important that the number of passes through this zone be optimized. This means that a proper balance should be struck be- tween flow and turbulent power to achieve optimum conditioning time. Too high a flow rate and insufficient turbulence may be improper if the reactions are diffusion limited. On the other hand, too much turbulent power and too little time in the reaction zone due to insufficient flow power may also be limiting. 4) Geometry and Impeller Design: The design of the conditioning vessel and the type of impeller employed are important factors in determining the relative distribution between flow and turbulent power and the degree of gas dispersion. Maximization of power input would be to no avail if the distribution between flow and turbulent power were improper or gas dispersion insufficient. 5. Physical Chemistry: The reactions between dissolved gases and solid surfaces may be limiting if gas solubility, activation energies and/or free energies are not favorable. J. H. Rushton, E. W. Costich, and H. J. Everett&apos; have summarized the mechanical elements of the combination of processes listed in a fundamental mixing equation. This equation was derived by dimensional analysis and relates the physical variables for a single impeller, centered in a cylindrical, vertical axis, flat-bottomed tank. The dijfusiuity D was determined at 25° to 780°C- from hyd?-ogen evolution rates. Anomalous evolution from air-melted iron was att~zbztted to residual hydrogen, which is interpreted as a hydrogen compound that decomposes at a strongly temperature-(Ieperzdent rate above 500°C. Above 200°C, D = 0.0014 cm2sec-1 exp (-3200 cal per g atom/RT). Below, 200°C the diffusivity is anomalously low and represented by D = 0.12 cm2sec-l exp (-7820 cal per g atom/RT). It is postulated that at low temperatures the hydrogen in the metal is "trapped" with an energy 4.8 kcaL per g atom below- that of the interstitial hydrogen. 1 HE purpose of the present experimental study was to determine the diffusivity of hydrogen in a-Fe over an extended temperature range. As certain anomalies were encountered, attempts were made to understand the anomalies themselves. The deposits occur in a large salt basin of Middle Devonian age. The potash, the final deposit in the salt basin, results from several interrupted cycles of evaporation and dessication. The deposits are extensive, and, at first glance, relatively undisturbed. With more and more wells being drilled, it has now become evident that salt solution has played a large part in changing the original deposits, resulting in some cases in partial to complete removal of the potash and the underlying halite. The most dominant factor in the removal of salt by solution appears to have been tectonic movement and consequent faulting, probably of relatively minor dimensions but of major importance. Evidence which indicates the tilting of the evaporite basin to the north and northwest is shown by the changing pattern of the basin during succeeding eras of potash deposition. The potash minerals of most importance economically are sylvite and carnallite. Reserve calculations indicate that 6.4 billion tons of recoverable high grade potash in K2O equivalent exist in the basin. The Devonian salt basin, which contains the Saskatchewan potash deposits, extends from just east of the foothills in Alberta, north as far as the Peace River area, across Saskatchewan and into Manitoba as far east as Range 10 west of the First Meridian and south into Montana and North Dakota (Fig. 1). The basin is closed everywhere except to the northwest. The known potash deposits are confined almost entirely to the Province of Saskatchewan, with the exception of a small area in western Manitoba bordering the Saskatchewan boundary. The following discussion will concern only the Saskatchewan part of the basin. The evaporite series in the basin is defined as the Prairie Evaporite Formation of the Elk Point Group, of Middle Devonian age. Recent work done by potassium-argon dating methods has indicated an Upper Middle Devonian (Givetian) age of from 285 to 347 million years for the potash. The Elk Point Group consists in ascending order of the Ashern, Winnipegosis, and Prairie Evaporite Formations. The Ashern formation, with an average thickness of 30 ft, sometimes called the Third Red Bed, consists of dolomitic shales and shaly dolomites. The Winnipegosis, is a reef-type dolomite, usually with good porosity, and in many cases oil-staining, although to date no production has been obtained. The thickness varies from 50 to 250 ft. The Prairie Evaporite formation, varying from 0 to 600 ft in thickness, consists of halite with interbedded anhydrite and shale, with considerable amounts of potassium salts in the upper part of the formation. The potassium salts are chiefly chlorides, although very minor occurrences of sulfates have been re- ported. The anhydrite beds do not appear to be continuous, although generally one or two bands of anhydrite underlie the lowest potash zone and are used as marker horizons. The shale occurs as seams interbedded with the salts, as large irregular inclusions in the salts and as very fine particles in intimate mixture with the salts. The Prairie Evaporite Formation is overlain by the Second Red Bed member, the Dawson Bay Formation and the First Red Bed Member of the Manitoba Group, listed in ascending order. The Red Beds are shales which vary in color from red to green, maroon, grey, grey-black, and reddish purples. They serve as marker horizons for coring the potash. The Second Red Bed averages 14 ft in thickness, the First Red Bed 35 ft. The Dawson Bay Formation, which everywhere overlies the First Red Bed and the Prairie Evaporite Formation in the area under discussion, is a reef type of carbonate, in some places limestone, in others limestone and dolomite, with vugular to pinpoint porosity averaging 130 ft in thickness. In some parts of the area, it has a salt section near the top of the formation, usually with interbedded shales and limestones. In other parts of the area, it is waterbearing and the salt is absent. Detailed mapping has indicated that the areas in which the Dawson Bay is water-bearing are areas which have been disturbed by faulting. Where the Dawson Bay is salt-bearing, the porosity has been plugged by salt. The total thickness of the salt varies from between 600 to 700 ft in the center of the basin to zero at the northern edge of the basin (Fig. 2).* The salt-free area in the center of the Province is believed to have resulted from removal of salt by solution. Evidence from several wells suggests that salt removal has been a continuing process from the time of deposition to the present day. The Bathurst mining district is located near the town of Bathurst on the north shore of the province of New Brunswick in eastern Canada. This region is the northeasterly extension of the Appalachian mountain system. The area is heavily forested and covered with a fairly uniform layer of glacial gravels and boulder clay. The relief is low, increasing to a few hundred feet in the north west and several hundred feet in the extreme southwest. Thus, rock outcrops are scarce and occur mostly along streams and ridges. These factors made conventional prospecting difficult and resulted in the district becoming an excellent place for the application of regional geological studies, air photo techniques, airborne and gound geophysical methods and soil sampling. Late in 1952, The Brunswick Mining and Smelting Company discovered a very large base metal sulphide body presently known as their No. 6 orebody. Early in 1953, another and even larger sulphide body was discovered and is known as the No. 12 ore body. Mining exploration was very active thoughout 1953 and in 1954, The American Metal Company discovered the orebodies which have been developed into The Heath Steele &apos;Mines. The location of these deposits is shown on figure one. In the latter part of 1954, The Anaconda Company became interested in the district and decided to make a geological study of this new and promising base rrietal area. The following paper presents the story of the application of modern geological and geophysical techniques, leading to the discovery of a large sul-nhidp liodv. The Bathurst district is generally underlain by the Tetagouche group of Middle Ordovician rocks.

This paper covers an investigation of the magnetic roasting characteristics of several iron ores when treated in the form of small pebbles (1/8" to 1/2" in size), and in the form of balled fines. The roasting treatment was carried out with apparatus capable of very close control of time, temperature, face velocity, and per cent combustible in the reaction gas. The effect of rapid initial heating was not studied although it is believed that this has a major effect on the results when processing solid pebbles. The test equipment is a fixed bed type, with such a wide range of gas velocities, temperature, combustible content and etc., that the results obtained can be made to approximate those from various commercial roasting processes. The data presented in this report covers reaction rates, effect of processing variables on silica in the concentrate, flow resistance of beds, and to a limited extent, the effect of particle size. The work is far from complete and raises many more problems than it gives answers for. We believe, however, that much of the information will be useful to those engaged in investigation of magnetic roasting processes. We measured the time required for various degrees of completion of the reaction of hematite to magnetite, for finely pound material in balled form and for carefully sized crushed ore. Measurements were made for a variety of Minnesota and Labrador ores. This report covers an ore requiring fine ginding (-325 M) for liberation (Lower Kevin) and an ore requiring coarser grinding (-100 M) for liberation (Upper Olson). These ores represent approximately the range of characteristics for a group in the west end of the Mesabi Range. Our data shows that the reaction rate is very fast for the finely ground material and that tests are readily reproducible. The reaction rate of the larger size material, in the range of 1/8" to 1/2", is much slower and the results more erratic. We found that for the ores tested, the percentage of silica in the Davis tube magnetic concentrate was a function of iron recovery. Normally the concentrate had a low and relatively uniform percentage of silica up to a critical value of recovery. Above this critical recovery value the percentage of silica increased very rapidly. For example, for one particular ore roasted in the form of 3/8" diameter balls made from -28 mesh fines, the silica remained at about 7% to 8% until the recovery exceeded about 93%. Increasing the recovery beyond 93% resulted in over 25% silica with the additional recovery. The degree of conversion of hematite to magnetite (% completion of roast) required to obtain 93% recovery for balled material, varied inversely with the gas flow rate. Percentage silica in the concentrate resulting from roasting 3/16" and 1/2" solid material was relatively erratic. However, for varying degrees of iron recovery the lowest silica percentages corresponded to those obtainable when roasting fines. It is thought the probable reason for the erratic values was the variation in shattering or cracking of the pebbles during initial heating and roasting. There is some indication that very fast initial heating will greatly increase the permeability of the individual particles of ore to gas flow so that the reaction rate for coarse sizes will approach that obtainable with balled fine material.
