Various aspects of the history of mining at The Zinc Corporation, Limited (ZC) and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NHHC) are examined. There are some discussions about the various methods used to mine the pillars left after the primary mining operations, with an enphasis being placed on the more modern pillar mining methods. Some new pillar mining proposals are presented. INTRODUCTION In the past, pillar reserves at ZC/NBHC have been scheduled for mining by labour intensive and high unit cost mining methods. These methods include both undercut and fill and overhand square set timber stoping. Recent technological advances in large diameter longhole drilling and high charge density explosives have culminated in the mechanised Vertical Crater Retreat (VCR) mining method and this method has been successfully used for the extraction of two pillars at NBHC and more stopes are planned. However the use of VCR methods for mining pillars at ZC/NBHC is restricted to approximately 50 per cent of the total pillar reserves and it appears that high cost methods will be needed to mine the remaining Pillars.

Mount Isa Mines Limited recently commiss ioned an 800 tph Heavy Medium Preconcentration Plant for lead/zinc/silver ores. The decision to build this plant was made in late 1979 based largely on investigations conducted in the Company's pilot plant on a variety of ore types including Hilton ores, between 1972 and 1978. The paper reviews the historical develop- ment of the pilot plant heavy medium circuit through this period and illustrates the extent to which this work impacted on the final design criteria. This review also includes a description of plant operation, manning levels, process equipment and metallurgical performance Achieved.

In recent years the heavy mineral mining industry has started to look more closely at the feasibility of mining moderate to high slimes deposits. During the initial stages of orebody evaluation the primary purpose of the pilot plant is to produce heavy mineral concentrate for metallurgical evaluation. Hence, generally little consideration is given to the disposal of the waste material (slimes and tailings). This paper suggests additional, simple, low-cost, tests that can easily be incorporated into an initial pilot plant operation. With this data a more definitive evaluation of available waste disposal options can be made during the early stages of the project. Thus, permitting better project focus and utilisation of resources. These tests include free settling of slimes, natural slimes drying and consolidation (undrained and drained), tailings stacking angles, and particle size distributions of input and waste streams, etc. The objective and method of each test is summarised, together with its relevance to possible waste disposal options. The results of this preliminary testwork can later be used to expand upon and define further tests for the second phase of pilot plant operations, which will enable a more definitive evaluation of a proposed waste disposal solution.

The thickener overflow of zinc concentrate, obtained from flotation process in the Angouran plant located in Iran, contains a large quantity of slimes which were transferred to the tailing ponds. These slimes have caused problems of storing and environmental aspects in the Angouran area. The objective of this research is to describe the extraction of zinc from these slimes by leaching method using sulfuric acid in pilot plant scale.Chemical analyses showed that these tailing materials contain 35 per cent of zinc. By XRD analysis, smithsonite is identified as the major constituent. Calcite, dolomite, and cerussite are found as carbonate minerals. A minimal amount of Zn occurs as hemimorphite. Quartz, kaolinite, clinochlore and muscovite are other silicate minerals in the slimes.In the optimal conditions, ie acid leach at pH of 1, temperature of 55¦C, reaction time of 120 minutes and solid-liquid ratio of 1:3 and neutralisation with Ca(OH)2 at pH = 4.5, temperature = 70¦C, time = 90 minutes, the total recovery of zinc obtained was 95 per cent.

Copper-lead dross is a by-product of the refining of lead bullion produced by the Imper- ial Smelting Process. This dross contains some 27 percent copper, 50 percent lead, four percent zinc and one percent sulphur. An ammonium carb- onate leach at atmospheric temperature and pressure removed the copper from the dross while the lead zinc and precious metals remained in the leach residue for return to the smelter. The leach solution containing the copper was then purified by liquid-liquid ion exchange using LIX64N in a kerosene diluent. ("LIX" is the registered trade mark of a range of hydroxy oximes marketed by General Mills Inc.) The pilot plant had a capacity of 0.7 kg/h of CuSO4,5H20 and was operated for some fifty days on a two shift basis. Copper sulphate of excellent purity was produced, and the results obtained indicated that a copper recovery of ninety percent from the dross could be expected from a commercial installation.

A pilot plant evaluation of the Savmin process, for the purification of mine water was commissioned by Anglogold and conducted at the Stilfontein Gold Mine, Margaret Shaft at Stilfontein in the North West province of South Africa. The purpose of the project was to obtain the operating conditions and operating costs, to produce different qualities of product water, as well as design parameters for upscaling to an industrial plant. Pilot Plant confirmatory testing of the treatment route developed in the Metallurgical Laboratory is an essential factor in the development of complex ore bodies. Objectives should be well defined to permit the efficient planning and cost effective operation of the pilot plant project. The primary objective for the pilot plant should be to confirm the viability of the developed flowsheet on a continuous basis, examining only major variables such as ore types, quantum changes in grind, comparison between bulk and sequential flotation circuits, use of flotation columns, evaluation of autogenous grinding and production of samples of concentrates for market evaluation. Secondary objectives may include the collection of engineering design data and the production of a comprehensive report to Bankable Document standards to provide technical support for capital financing. The complexity of the ore body and the scale of the final operating project together with the pilot plant objectives will determine the extent of the pilot plant operations. The level of expenditure associated with a pilot plant can vary, in total cost and as a percentage of the total development capital investment required to take the prospect from exploration to a producing mine. Factors contributing to expenditure are discussed. Associated with cost considerations is the level of confidence mining company investors can have that their capital investment will return dividends.

In 1975, following a programme of solution characterization and small scale laboratory test work, a pilot plant was constructed to treat waste liquors from the Risdon works. The plant was designed basically to neutralize liquor to a desired pH, and to flocculate, thicken and then filter the resultant pulps. The primary objective was to purify waste liquors to stand- ards set by Tasmanian environmental regulations and at the same time to provide design data for construction of a full scale treatment facility. Waste liquors were divided into two groups, those from the Zinc Plant, and those from the Acid and Superphosphate Plants, and were treated independently. To satisfactorily purify Zinc Plant waste liquors the following reaction sequence was required: 1. Neutralization to pH 10.5 (with aeration for Mn removal). 2. Further reaction of neutralized pulp with Na2S at an addition rate of typically 5 mg of S2-/litre of liquor treated to remove Cd.

Pilot plant work has played a major role in the process development and design phase of the Iscor Heavy Minerals project. The pilot plant campaigns have been aimed at three process areas, namely primary beneficiation (wet gravity circuits), heavy mineral separation and ilmenite smelting. A process development structure was put in place, and the various pilot plants designed and built. A number of pilot campaigns were conducted during the project phase since 1995, and most of the key objectives were achieved. Various other valuable ælessonsÆ were learnt, and were incorporated in the full-scale plant designs, or used to change operating philosophies, equipment choices et cetera. The cost and durations of the pilot runs were significant, and an analysis indicated that the major risk and technology area of smelting has contributed more than 70 per cent of the total cost.

The design of a pilot-scale, turbulent-jet flash reactor which models the essential features of the industrial smelter is described. A report of its operation and application to an investigation of the ignition of particles of sulphide species is given.

In an earlier paper(l) details of a laboratory method of extracting and separating tantalum and columbium oxides from tantalite have been given. In view of the fact that Australia may have need to be self sufficient in this field it was decided to erect a pilot plant for the production of tantalum oxide in the Metallurgy School, University of Melbourne. The plant was designed for treating about 40 lb. of ore in a batch over a period of two weeks, although; because of the sectionalized nature of the process, the capacity of the plant was 40 lb. ore per week.Australia is fortunate in possessing some very rich tantalite and columbite deposits, particularly in the Pilbara District in Western Australia. The process of desilverising by fractional crystallisation with reflux was investigated through laboratory batch tests and continuous laboratory bench scale tests at CSIRO Clayton, to a 300 kg/hr pilot plant at Port Pine. The pilot plant built at BHAS comprised a vertical cylindrical refining column with internal diameter 250 mm and height 3.2 m, attached at the top to an off-set cylindrical stirred crystalliser tank. Crystals were made in the crystalliser by intermittent immersion of steel cold fingers, which were water cooled between immersions. Gas heat was used for melting the crystals at the base of the column and for side compensation heating. A computerised in strumentation system was employed for data logging and for controlling some critical plant operations. A mechanical device was first employed to promote counter-current plug flow of crystals down the column against the rising stream of reflux liquid, but this was found to be unsatisfactory owing to excess noise, frequent mechanical failure, and excessive accumulation of dross. Plug flow was finally promoted by pulsing the column. Low silver levels, less than 1 gitonne, were achieved with both methods of crystal transport under total reflux conditions. The pulsed column gave results for silver and bismuth which agreed with the theoretical predictions of a computer model, but there was some selective drossing of antimony. In the mechanically agitated column, excessive drossing promoted selective removal of most of the antimony and some of the bismuth, and the results after extended operation were well removed from the theoretical predictions. Plant failures and operating problems prevented the achievement of satisfactory product quality with the necessary reliability under production conditions. Other priorities necessitated the termination of the project before the process could be optimised.

The pilot scale testing of Australian coals for their NO, emissions was carried out at the ACTC to investigate the influence of coal properties, furnace conditions and different NO,, control strategies on NO,, emissions. The NOx emissions for the Australian coals tested were found to vary over a wide range and primarily depended on combustion temperature and excess oxygen conditions. These coals did not exhibit any fundamental difference in NOx levels to other world coals. Under similar combustion conditions, the conversion of coal nitrogen to NO. was found to be best correlated with coal rank parameter, R, max per centage. The use of staged combustion as a control strategy was shown to reduce their NOx levels by 56 - 77 per cent.

Operators of nickel laterite pressure acid leach and gold pressure oxidation technology frequently employ a series of steam condensing heaters to preheat the leach feed slurry. The heaters are an economic pinch point û although the thermal performance of the heaters is critical to overall process viability and operating cost minimisation, they are also a significant capital item and must be sized accordingly. Despite this, discussions of the factors underlying heater design are conspicuously absent from technical literature, and existing operations feature a conflicting range of heater sizes and configurations. This variety would suggest that at least some of the chosen heater designs are oversized. As part of its detailed design stage, the Ravensthorpe Nickel Project (RNP) constructed and tested a pilot plant heater to develop an understanding of the heating process and to ensure that the RNP heaters were appropriately sized. This testwork used RNP slurry at design density and viscosity on a 450 mm diameter, 6500 mm high column. The pilot plant testwork demonstrated the intrinsic efficiency of the direct steam condensation heating process, which was essentially independent of slurry density and viscosity. Presence of non-condensable gases in the steam phase decreased the heat transferred in certain circumstances, but heater performance remained consistent with thermodynamic limitations. Stagewise heat transfer within the column was rapid, and suggested either a very high slurry surface area or excellent heat transfer within the slurry phase. While the testwork did not set out to distinguish between these effects, physical evidence pointed to droplet formation in the inter-tray shower zone, giving a high heat transfer area. For scale-up purposes, the key facts were that the heat transfer rate was not limited by using high viscosity slurries and heaters could be designed using the principles applied to the smaller of those in existing operations. This paper discusses existing slurry heater designs, the current understanding from open literature, the pilot plant testwork, results and analysis, and scale-up to commercial sized equipment.

"The benefits of measuring blast movement to reduce ore loss and dilution have been recognised by many people for many years and various methods have been used with limited success. Geita Gold Mine is running the pilot study on the blast movement monitoring (BMM) system which is a revolutionary method developed and patented by the University of Queensland and Blast Movement Technology (BMT). The system consists of directional transmitters placed within the shot prior to blasting, which are then located after the blast with a special detector and then the data is processed with purpose-designed software.As part of continuous improvement on grade control, Geita Gold Mine is running a research project in all operating pits with the objective of: quantifying the three-dimensional blast muck pile movement and finally utilise the movement data to define post-blast ore polygons and incorporate the movement dynamics during block modelling,quantify the potential savings for ore loss and dilution,improve mine geologists knowledge of blast dynamics, andstimulate greater co-operation between drill and blast engineers and geologists to achieve optimum blast designs.To any operation with selective mining, it is critical to the economics of an operation to control ore loss and dilution; getting it wrong will result in significant lost revenue. The adsorptive and granulate forming MetClean™ process has been used at many locations in Northern Sweden, Norway, Denmark, France, Spain, Mongolia, Japan and Australia. It has been pilot tested and used in full scale treatment plants to remove metals from:mine watersleachate from solid waste in incineration flue gasleachate from fly ash damsleachate from landfill and waste ponds.The following paper provides details of pilot and plants tests on the effectiveness of MetClean™ in removing arsenic, antimony, barium, cadmium, copper, molybdenum, nickel, radium, uranium, vanadium and zinc. Results show that MetClean™ may reduce the concentration of these metals in treated effluent water to the one part per billion (ppb) range.The paper also finds that, for specific metals, the optimal adsorption condition depends on the:pH levelmolar relation between the specific targeted metal and the addition of iron (II) or manganese (II)type of oxidation agentssalinity levelpresence of other metals.The most effective pH level varies according to the targeted metal but falls within the pH 5 to pH 11 range. A compromise pH level may be set when more than one metal is targeted for removal at the same time and through only one process step. The removal efficiency of one or both metals may be affected by operating at a compromise rather than optimum pH level.The MetClean process generates non-hazardous solid waste. The link between the Lecco bypass and major road SS36 (Italy) requires the construction of a double two-way tunnel (through the mount San Martino carbonatic massif). The tunnel excavating section is about 90 sqm through mount San Martino carbonatic rocks. The mountain sides are unstable and are often the scene of large collapsing landslides (tens of thousand cubic metres). The tunnels are very close to the mountain sides. The use of blasting induces vibrations which may reach the Lecco built-up area. With a view to avoiding such dangers the excavating operations were carried out in two successive stages: - opening a pilot tunnel, whose section is about 10 square metres, by a full face TBM to eliminate the more intense vibrations which are generated by the first opening charges; - successive enlargement by blasting.

Pilot-Plant Testing of Ammoniacal-Cyanidation for Gold Recovery from Copper Gold-Bearing Ore The results of pilot-plant tested ammoniacal-cyanidation of gold recovery from copper gold-bearing ore are presented in this paper. This ore is from a deposit of Russian Federation with gold and copper grade 9.5 g/t and 0.4 per cent, respectively. Copper is largely present as malachite and azurite. The presence of chalcopyrite and bornite is also observed. In order to recover gold, gravity is recommended. Two options of ammoniacal-cyanidation using leaching of gravity tails, CIP and filtration, were tested. It was found that ammoniacal-cyanidation using filtration of leaching tailings and recycled solutions is the most optimal option. The proposed flow sheet provides for 89.7 per cent gold recovery from gravity tailings at the consumption of NaCN 0.9 kg/t and (NH4)2CO3 7.5 - 9 kg/t. Compared to conventional cyanidation, this technology decreases the consumption of sodium cyanide from 4 up to 0.9 kg/t at the same gold recovery. It can be recommended for the treatment of copper gold-bearing ores with the similar composition.
