Recent studies by the authors have concerned themselves with assessing the earthquake risk to north-eastern Australia, based on available historical earthquake data for the area. There have been several significant earthquakes (Richter local magnitudes of the order of 6) concentrated in the Wide Bay - Burnett region in central eastern Queensland, although none of these has occurred close to a significant centre of population or development. Using derived average acceleration attenuation relations and world-wide data on earthquake-induced damage as a basis, conditions under which earthquake-induced liquefaction may occur have been investigated and presented in graphical form. Historical earthquake data for north-eastern Australia have been overlain on this graphical presentation and it has been demonstrated that the Wide Bay - Burnett region, in particular, may in the past have been on the verge of earthquake-induced liquefaction, where ground conditions are susceptible. When this is viewed in the context of the rapid growth in population and development in this area over recent years, the risk can no longer be ignored with impunity.

As high grade ore deposits are depleted, remaining deposits are generally lower grade and require the mining and processing of larger volumes of material per tonne of product. These low grade deposits often contain a large proportion of barren gangue. Pre-concentration aims to remove this barren material at as coarse a particle size and as early in the process as possible. This has the potential to reduce processing costs, energy and water consumption, increase production and improve resource utilisation.There are several technologies that may be applicable for pre-concentration. This paper looks specifically at bulk ore sorting and how it can be integrated into existing or new mining operations to improve profitability and reduce environmental impact. Bulk ore sorting is the separation of barren gangue from a fully loaded conveyor belt based on the grade as measured or inferred from a sensor measurement. It may be used to increase the production rate through fixed plant capacity, or increase production and/or reduce the size of downstream processing equipment in Greenfield operations. Marginal ore sub-economic reserves may be upgraded, making them economic to treat and improving the resource utilization. Bulk ore sorting could also be used to reduce dilution and ore loss in mining operations by improving grade control, or to separate ore types to treat via different process routes. Comprehensive occupational health and safety legislation in Australia is comparatively recent. It follows the examples set in U.S.A. and U.K. a decade or more ago. In Western Australia the Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Act was proclaimed in April 1985. It still has a long way to go before it achieves all its objectives. The mining industry has developed a substantial body of health and safety regulations under the Mines Regulation Act. Considerable practical expertise in such matters already exists, much of it developed from hard won experience. As a result it would prefer not to become engulfed in the new legislation. It would prefer to build upon the cooperatively developed policies and workable practices in the field of occupational health and safety with which it is familiar. Associated Minerals Consolidated Ltd. is a leading mineral sands producer in Western Australia and has continuously developed its occupational health and safety policy and practices. Under the banner of "Resource Control", AMC seeks to provide a safe and healthy working environment at all times. This is being achieved through a strategy of a policy, a defined organisational structure and a detailed programme, which together comprise the "Resource Control System". Some of the activities and achievements of AMC in the field of occupational health and safety are compared with the objectives of contemporary legislation, and details of some of the specialised areas of the Resource Control Programme are discussed. The paper will also highlight and discuss impractical areas of potential legislation.

Spectrum Resources commenced operations as a public listed mining company in August, 1983, with a variety of precious metal projects in New Zealand. At that time the outlook for most mineral commodities, with the notable exception of precious metals, was decidedly gloomy. Metal prices were depressed and demand forecasts were universally gloomy. Against this background the company reviewed the non-traditional metals sector to try and identify a 'new' metal with an above average demand growth and market value. Lithium, a commodity with exciting new applications in storage batteries and alloys, met both criteria. Annual world consumption of lithium is around 7000 tonnes; current prices are around $NZ40/lb for lithium metal and demand growth is projected at five to seven per cent per annum. Geothermal fluids at Wairakei and elsewhere contain anomalous amounts of lithium and in May, 1984, the Chemistry Division of DSIR was commissioned to carry out a literature survey on the possible recovery of lithium and other minerals from geothermal waters. The survey results were encouraging and the company subsequently negotiated exclusive access rights, for research purposes, to geothermal discharge fluids from the Wairakei and Kawerau geothermal fluids. Most of the subsequent investigations reported here were carried out by Chemistry Division, DSIR, under contract to the company with some assistance from the Industrial Processing Division, DSIR.

Globalisation and consolidation is resulting in the mining industry coming to be dominated by a small number of very large companies seeking to lever assets and knowledge to create wealth. As an important service provider to the mining industry, the minerals tertiary education sector needs to understand these global drivers and respond to them. However, it is under-resourced and its sustainability is under challenge in all Western countries. Through the establishment and funding of the Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC), the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) has provided a unique opportunity to build a national, world-class minerals tertiary education environment in Australia that can be sustained in the long-term. This paper reviews how the global changes occurring in the mining industry provide the model for what needs to occur in the minerals education sector and how MTEC is the logical vehicle to facilitate these changes. It concludes by suggesting that the time has come to integrate the minerals tertiary education providers into one business. Furthermore, the vision should be for a global mining education academy based around a virtual university capable of servicing the cultural diversity and continuing education needs of the global minerals industry.

The 5.6 km Canning Tunnel was constructed to improve water supply from Canning Dam to the Perth metropolitan area. The site area is in the Darling Range which is essentially a laterite-capped plateau-remnant underlain by Archaean granitic rocks, intruded by dolerite. Two arrangements were available. After geotechnical investigations which included geological mapping, seismic refraction geo- physics, diamond drilling and mechanical rock testing, a single tunnel was selected in pre- ference to two short tunnels and a connecting pipeline. The tunnel is hydraulically equivalent to a fully lined tunnel 1.83 m in diameter and 5 580 m long. The alignment diverged from a straight line so that the initial upstream section was almost normal to the contours which allowed for minimal support requirements in a weathered zone. Although steel and con- crete lining was needed at both ends, the main section of the tunnel was unlined except for a concrete floor. A sand and rock trap with a capacity of 46 m3 was constructed near the outlet portal to collect debris and sand down to a size of about 2 mm. Portal excavations were in highly to completely weathered rock which extended 56 m into the tunnel at the upstream end, and 18 m at the downstream end. A key environmental management issue associated with mining projects is tailing disposal. In high rainfall environments this is particularly challenging and generally requires the discharge of excess water from a tailing dam to adjacent streams or coastal waters. Such discharges can potentially have adverse impacts on downstream water quality and the environmental values associated with these waters, such as providing a drinking water supply for local villagers, maintaining a fisheries resource or protecting a fish species of high conservation significance. An alternative to the construction and operation of a conventional tailing dam is Deep Sea Tailing Placement (DSTP). The key features of such a system are:Discharge of the tailing slurry at considerable depth (approximately 120 - 150 m) below the oceanÆs surface. This requires a pipeline to be laid from the process plant to a mix tank, where the tailing is mixed with seawater and entrained air released. The pipeline then continues down the ocean floor to the required discharge depth, which is below the surface mixed layer and the euphotic zone. After discharge, formation of a density current which continues to descend along the ocean floor as long as the slope is sufficiently steep. Final deposition of the tailing in an area where the slope of the ocean floor is insufficient to maintain the density current. This typically occurs at depths of more than 800 m. Water quality issues associated with DSTP include: Impacts on the oceanic water column due to the formation of subsurface plumes which break away from the descending density current. The occurrence of elevated concentrations of contaminants in the interstitial waters of the deposited tailing solids. Fluxes of contaminants from the tailing deposits into the overlying oceanic water column. This paper discusses the water quality aspects of DSTP with particular reference to a case study in Papua New Guinea. The evaluations undertaken as part of the DSTP impact assessment included consideration of both the short- and long-term chemical behaviour of contaminants and bioassays, within the appropriate water quality assessment framework.

Resource rent taxes are taxes which only become effective at such a time as a pre-determined rate of return has been achieved by an operation. Resource Rent Taxes have from time to time been considered for implementation in bothAustralia and New Zealand. The offshore petroleum industry in Australia is already subject to RRT as is the Roxby Downs (Olympic Dam) Mine in South Australia. Both the mining and petroleum taxation regimes in Papua New Guinea include a resource rent tax component called Additional Profits Tax.   The implications of the current form of additional profits tax for shareholder cash returns are that the tax burden on the operation may suddenly increase at some stage in the life of the mine if and when the threshold level of profitability for the tax to be triggered is exceeded. From that point in time onwards the cash return to the shareholders on the capital invested is greatly diminished. For mining companies in Papua New Guinea, the effective tax rate increases from 35% to 57.75% as a result of the onset of additional profits tax. This tax rate penalty is so severe that there appears to be merit in considering the concept of managing profitability through time rather than purely maximising annual pre-tax profits as is currently the case in most mining operations. This would have the benefit of deferring or perhaps preventing altogether the onset of the tax. One possible method for the effective management of profitability is through the control of average mining grade by cutoff grade manipulation.   Traditional cutoff grade theory has usually considered taxation as a direct cost at a fixed or variable percentage of annual profits. As a result of this most analyses are conducted on a pre-tax basis. If tax is included in analyses it is usually present as a time independent function of gross profit. Additional profits tax is both time, and rate of return dependent and therefore not adequately accommodated by currently accepted cutoff grade theory.   A review has been made of the effects of resource rent taxes on both the investment decision-making process as well as possible development and mining strategies which may be employed by mining companies faced with resource rent taxes. The review includes examples based on the structure of additional profits tax which is levied in Papua New Guinea.

The methods and equipment developed and used at the Mount Isa mine to obtain samples of uncemented hydraulic fill lying above major horizontal pillars are described. From existing underground development, samples were obtained at distances up to 50 m, of which up to 30 m was through hard rock. Samples were used to predict fill behaviour as it affected mining security during recovery of the pillars.Specialized equipment for difficult sampling situations and also other sampling exercises are described.

The structure and tectonic setting has had a strong influence on gold mineralisation at the Porgera gold deposit. Here, the structural controls on the mineralisation at Porgera are discussed and placed in a regional tectonic context. The Porgera gold deposit is related to the emplacement of the Porgera Intrusive Complex. Prior to intrusive emplacement at Porgera, Papua New Guinea was affected by a major fold and thrust episode which occurred in response to arc-continent collision in the Late Miocene. After crustal shortening the region experienced a relaxation of compression which is expressed in the deformation accompanying mineralisation at Porgera. The first stage of mineralisation (stage I) is hosted by extension fractures, and is spatially associated with exposed intrusive stocks. A later episode of mineralisation (stage II) is hosted by the faults and fractures of the Roamane Fault Zone, which was active as a dip-slip normal fault during stage II mineralisation. Therefore a change in the tectonic environment from shortening to extensional tectonics can be seen at Porgera before and during mineralisation. Rapid fault-slip during stage II mineralisation may have aided high-grade gold mineralisation by subjecting hydrothermal fluids to changes in pressure, temperature, fluid-fluid and fluid-rock interaction. Uplift to form the highlands of Papua New Guinea occurred after mineralisation and was largely complete by 4.0 Ma.

The application of tunnel boring machines (TBM) for reef mining is a unique practice with benefits over current mining methods given the right geology and geometry of the orebody. The Stillwater Mining Company (SMC) of Nye, Montana, USA operates two mines for obtaining platinum metals. The operation is currently using a 5.5 m diameter open-type machine for further mine development, as well as another TBM that they own.The latest 7.1 km bored tunnel, known as the Blitz Tunnel, will be routed parallel to the ore deposit in igneous mafic intrusive rock, and will be used for the life of the mine operation. It will be used to map the ore deposit, and provide a rail haulage route.Detecting the reef in relation to the TBM requires careful analysis. Diamond core drilling occurs ahead, above, and alongside the machine at every 150 m. The core is drilled, logged, and interpreted on the spot, concurrent with boring. Based on the data, the TBM is readjusted so that it stays on the correct bore path.This paper will highlight the application and benefits of TBM usage for reef mining, with detailed descriptions from the mine site.CITATION:Willis, D, Jacobs, C, Luxner, T and Shanahan, A, 2014. Improvements in the drill and blast process can impact on loader performance in a number of ways. The main effects being improved loading cycle times, less non-productive cycles such as oversize removal, clean-up and face raking and better bucket fill factors. The impact of improved loading cycle times on the overall cost and productivity of the load and haul cycle is very much dependent on the loader truck match and the management of the haul fleet. Previous work has shown that a 20 per cent improvement in dig cycle times may only lead to three per cent or less improvement in the overall productivity of the load and haul process. However, improving the mass loaded per pass by five per cent will lead to a five per cent improvement in productivity for any given haul fleet situation, assuming sufficient truck capacity. Work by Orica Explosives at Lab ChrysotileÆs Thetford Mine, Quebec, Canada showed a relationship between muckpile fragmentation and truck payload. With this in mind, work was carried out to determine the effect differing muckpile fragmentation distributions can have on excavator bucket fill factors. This work was performed in the laboratory to a 1:100 scale. Nine different distributions were used. These were characterised by the Rosin Rammler parameters, xc the characteristic size, and n, the uniformity index. The values of xc and n used were modelled on those previously measured at a Sydney quarry. For the range of distributions measured, it was found that the fill factors were lowest at a low characteristic size and a high uniformity index and highest at a high characteristic size and a low uniformity index. In other words the best fill factors were achieved with a more dispersed muckpile distribution with a larger characteristic size. The difference in fill factors was 16 per cent indicating that controlling the drill and blast process to produce a specific muckpile distribution can have a significant impact on the overall cost-efficiency and productivity of the load and haul process. Field measurement by Orica Explosives at a quarry in Canada supports this conclusion showing improvements of up to seven per cent in average bucket load by either increasing the characteristic size or decreasing the uniformity index of the muckpile.

Tube bundle monitoring systems have come a long way from their first introduction to coal mining in the late 1960s/1970s. Early developments in the United Kingdom (UK) commenced with single gas analysers (carbon monoxide) and quickly moved towards introducing oxygen analysers and methane analysers for improved analysis, in particular the calculation of air-free results. Recommendations were made in the early days as to how and where to run tubes and on the matching of sample pump and purge pump pressures. Current Australian installations are commonly based on a four-gas multianalyser, infrared for carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and methane, and paramagnetic for oxygen. These systems are controlled with programmable logic controllers (PLC), with component monitoring as an integral part of the software. This paper discusses the development of tube bundle systems from the 1960s to the current date and looks at the advantages and disadvantages of the installations, along with making operational recommendations to be considered with the siting of the analyser building, running of tubes and maintenance of the system.CITATION:Watkinson, M, 2015. A strong correlation between the reduction degradation index (RDI) of production sinter and the titanium content of the sinter mix was identified at the Ruukki sintering plant between 2000 and 2004. The titanium distribution in different mineral phases was studied using samples from pot sintering tests. Titanium additions were made using two different materials: rutile and crushed titanium-bearing haematite pellets. While both titanium additions clearly increased the RDI, titanium seemed to favour secondary haematite. The study focused on the effect of titanium in haematite, because haematite is reduced to magnetite in the RDI test. During the haematite-magnetite reduction, reduction degradation was observed. To increase accuracy, the phenomenon was investigated first by sintering and then reducing synthetic minerals under controlled laboratory conditions at the University of Oulu. The effect of titanium oxide in solid solution in magnetite on the magnetite to haematite transformation rate was studied first in order to simulate the final stage of the sintering process. In other experiments, haematite samples doped with 0.5, 2.0 and 5.0 wt per cent titanium oxide were studied using thermogravimetry under a controlled gas atmosphere (CO/CO2/H2/N2). Sintered samples were reduced using the same gas composition as in the RDI test. Polished sections for optical microscopy and SEM-EDS analysis were prepared from both reduced and oxidised samples and unreduced sintered samples. The titanium oxide content of haematite had a clear effect on reduction degradation of the samples. Furthermore, increasing titanium oxide content in solid solution in magnetite radically accelerated the oxidation rate. Similar observations regarding the effects of titanium have been reported earlier, but this was the first time the effect of very small additions of titanium were shown to deteriorate blast furnace burden quality and a reason suggested behind the process.

Keyboard patterns of hundreds of minor faults with vertical displacements of 3 mm to 2 m occur within the Greta coal seam and cause serious mining problems in collieries. Many of the faults are concentrated in linear zones termed swarms. One swarm is 600 m wide and more than 800 m long and others are of comparable size.The minor faults between the swarms are normal and are relatively widely spaced and show dip-slip movements, but the faults within a swarm are clustered and show strike-slip and oblique-slip movements. Fault swarms ofthis size and frequency have not previously been described from the Sydney Basin or on a comparable scale elsewhere but appear to be a widespread phenomenon in Australian coalfields. The faults are assigned to classes onthe basis of orientation which are then assigned to sequential phases I to IV on the basis of offsetting relations between representatives of each class. Phase I faults are minor thrusts. Phase IT, Ill, and IV faults are concentratedin the swarms and show sinistral strike-slip and normal dip-slip movements. The interference of slickenlines indicates that multiple movements have occurred within a single phase; their order is (i) strike slip (ii) dip slip and (iii) oblique slip. All faults truncate and post-date both cleat and sedimentary "stone" dykes.Phase I minor thrusts trend at a high angle to the Hunter Thrust and are considered to predate the Late Permian movements on the Hunter Thrust. Phase II and III minor faults are younger and may be any age between the latePermian and Tertiary.

The Nena high sulphidation deposit, located in the Sandaun Province, PNG, contains a measured and indicated resource of 51 Mt of copper ore grading 0.5% Cu and 0.6 g/t Au at a 0.5% Cu cut-off. The copper orebody is overlain by an 18Mt oxide gold resource grading 0.1 % Cu and 1.4 g/t Au at a 0.6 g/t Au cut-off. The deposit is hosted in advanced argillic altered pyroclastics interstratified with lavas, volcanoclastics, epiclastics and sediments of the Debom Volcanics within the Frieda River Intrusive Complex. Foraminiferal sediments indicate the Debom Volcanics to be Early-Middle Miocene in age. Alteration is elongated along, and concentric about a northwest trending structure (Nena Structural Corridor) which is about 7km in length. The inner two alteration types, residual and massive silica-alunite are strongly brecciated and host the bulk of later hypogene Cu-Au mineralisation. Weakly mineralised weak silica- alunite and barren peripherally zoned clay alteration surround the inner mineralised alterations. The hypogene sulphide deposition was polyphasal, episodic and is zoned from north to south from covellite-enargite ¦ chalcocite (5600N to 5200N) to a mixed enargite-luzonite (5200N to 4700N) to luzonite-stibioluzonite (4700N to 4400N) in the south within a 1200m long by 300m diameter sub horizontal pipe like body. Paragenesis studies indicate that pyrite ¦ marcasite were introduced early with barite and black native sulphur before deposition of banded pyrite (melnicovite) with barite during a period of brecciation. Continued brecciation allowed bladed covellite ¦ chalcocite followed by enargite-luzonite-stibioluzonite ¦ pyrite (brassy) and minor acicular covellite deposition. Yellow native sulphur and trace amounts of galena were deposited in remaining pores. Pre-acid alteration intrusives domed the mainly volcanic stratigraphy in the southwest and post-mineralisation porphyries in the northeast truncate mineralisation. Supergene processes and erosion have modified the top of the deposit, creating a 45m thick goethitic-scoroditic-haematitic gold cap above a 40m thick (on average) chalcocite rich supergene blanket. Lesser amounts of digenite, covellite native copper and rarely seen malachite occur in the supergene copper zone.

Bulga prospect in central New South Wales is a small but well documented volcano- genic massive sulphide occurrence (450,000t of 0.8% Cu, 1.3% Pb, 5% Zn and 0.45 g/t Au) Cambrell and Kirk (1974), and Chisholm, (1976). Mineralization is localised near the interface of felsic pyroclastics with overlying silt- stones and along adjacent faults (Fig. 1). In this area with a Koeppen type cf6 climate, soils are thin and skeletal along ridges with thicker and better differentiated profiles with a colluvial component up to 2m thick developed

Advanced computer aided geological modelling techniques are now available to the geologist to allow the rapid evaluation of a gold orebody at various stages of its development. The types of grade estimation techniques used change during the various stages as the density of drilling and knowledge of the deposit increases. At the prospect evaluation stage drillhole intercept selection techniques are coupled with preliminary 2D (vein or layer) modelling or 3D block modelling techniques to arrive at a geological resource estimate. At the prefeasibility and feasibility stages more sophisticated 2D and 3D modelling techniques, such as domain controlled grade interpolation with anisotropy, are used along with interactive open pit and underground mine design, to calculate recoverable reserves. At the production stage closely spaced blasthole sample data is modelled quickly and coupled with interactive grade control facilities. Shot volumes, tonnages and grade estimates can be databased to provide reconciliation figures. These modelling techniques are embodied in MINEX-3D, an Australian software system which, with the emergence of the 386-based PC and high resolution (VGA or better) graphics, makes a whole range of advanced geological modelling techniques available to most exploration and mine geologists.

Ore reserve estimates form a basis for strategic mine planning at Argyle Diamonds open pit and alluvial operations. Most ore reserve statements are mainly concerned with resource tonnage and grade. Because diamond deposits are low grade, high value resources, diamond quality ($/carat) is also an important parameter. Relatively large variations in quality and/or grade can occur. These variations must be taken into account before the resource potential can be fully assessed. Computers (HP9000 and PC's) are utilised to compile resource inventories. Resource inventories are then ranked on an economic basis. This paper discusses the methods used to compile resource inventories and explains how these are then used to present ore reserve estimates in terms of resource potential.
