"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines undertook exploration in the Torlingua district, Texas, during June 1943, at a time when the demand for mercury for war industries was considerably more than the anticipated domestic production. In view of the impressive past production of the mines and the favorable geologic conditions in several underdeveloped areas in the district, the investigation was considered of immediate importance.Prior to initiation of the exploratory program, a preliminary examination of the district was made in August 1942 by A. B. Needham, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines. This examination was followed by a comprehensive geological study by the Federal Geological Survey 3/ and further investigation the Bureau of Mines."

"INTRODUCTION Early in World War II, the Bureau of Mines realized that reserves of fluorspar ore at many mines in the southern Illinois fluorspar district were not being developed as rapidly as the old ones were being depleted. At some mines the measured and indicated ore reserves were almost entirely depleted, although geologic factors favored new discoveries. The Leo mine, which had not been worked since 1938, was among this group of mining. The Bureau of Mines, together with the Illinois Geological Survey examined the property, studied the mine records and,geologic factors in 1944, and agreed that exploratory drilling was warranted Funds were,obtained for the work in the fiscal year 1945, and drilling was done; between October 27, 1944, and June 15, 1945.The property was owned in fee simple by the Hllside Fluor Spar Mines at the time exploration was begun in October 1944. Subsequently, in 1945, the Inland Steel Co. acquired of the Hillside property."

"The Johnny Bull and Silver Knight claims were selected for exploratory diamond drilling after having been examined by the Bureau of Mines 3./The property was considered attractive for two reasons: (1) A prominent outcrop, recognized as an extension of the Tennessee vein, persisted over a distance of 2,000 feet across the claims; (2) its proximity to the known ore shoots in the Tennessee-Schuylkill mine, one of the largest zinc-load producers in Arizona.Actual drilling was started September 18 and was terminated December 8, 1943. Eight holes, aggregating 2,979.5 feet, were drilled with two machines. ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resource to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines began a broad program of exploration of various proportion in the Pine Creek area of the Coeur d'Alene mining region in the fall of 1943. As a part of this project, exploring was done at theLittle Pittsburg property in 1945. The work included driving a 500-foot crosscut from the No, 6 level and drilling four diamond core drill holes to test the behavior of the Little Pittsburg vein at depth. This report presents the data obtained by the Bureau.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "INTRODUCTION The Phelps Stokes iron deposit, also known as the Iron Mountain claim, was examined by G. L. Thompson, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in January 1943. As a result, the Division of Geophysical Exploration 3/ made a magnetorater survey of the deposit in June 1944, and the Mining Branch included it in a,project to explore Nevada iron deposits.The Bureau explored the deposit from September to November 1944 by means of 643 feet of diamond drilling and 445 feet of trenching holes were drilled, all of which penetrated more than: 100 feet of good-grade magnetite, although nearly all the ore except that found in the first hole contained an excessive amount of sulfur. Trenching was done largely over the first two holes, PS-1 and PS-2, and exposed the full width of the ore.The deposit is in Nye County, Nevada, 7.7 miles east of Gabbs. The property was discovered in 1902 was patented in 1907. There has been no production from the property and except for the Bureau's investigation,,has not been, explored since it was patented.Magnetite is the principal ore mineral; it occurs as fine-grained particles associated with sulfides and cemented with talc and calcite."

During the early part of World War II , it appeared likely that supplies of chromite for United States industry might become critically short . As a part of the ensuing search for new sources of domestic chromite supply , the chromite - bearing black sands along the coast of southern Oregon were hurriedly investigated by State and federal agencies and by private interests , These investigations led to a decision to begin exploitation of the deposits immediately . A government stock- piling program was put into effect , a concentrator was financed by the Defense Plant Corporation , two privately controlled companies were encouraged to start mining operations , and the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey were authorized to search. for additional reserves of minable ore .

This report covers the magnetic survey in the Redford-Clayburg area , which was part of a general survey of magnetite deposits in New York started in 1943 . Other areas being surveyed include the Star Lake district , St. Lawrence County; Russia Station district , Clinton County; Brewster district , Putnam County; and the Sterling district , Orange County. Only a relatively small portion of the area was covered by reconnaissance and detailed surveys . Results were promising enough to warrant additional work. Magnetic surveys of this type serve as a basis for selecting areas for diamond drilling by the Bureau of lines .

The method for determining oil and water saturations described herein has been used successfully for several years in the core laboratories of the Bureau of Mines. The apparatus constructed according to the original specifications has proved very satisfactory; in fact, it has been widely adopted by core laboratories throughout the petroleum industry. The writers have found that the method gives reproducible results, the degree of accuracy depending largely on the attention to details given by the operator. The relative importance of these details of procedure and the design of the apparatus are discussed in this report. In September 1940, the Bureau of Mines published a report describing a method used in its laboratories for the determination of the water content of oil-field cores. The procedure was essentially the same as that adopted by the American Society for Testing Materials for the determination of the water content of petroleum products, although the apparatus and technique were altered slightly to increase the precision of the method and to adapt it to the characteristics of the material to be tested. The report also contained a description of the method used at that time in the Bureau’s core laboratories for measuring the oil content of a core, utilizing the sample on which the water-saturation determination had been made. The procedure involved the transfer of the weighed sample, from which the water had been distilled and measured, to a Soxhlet extractor and the removal of the remaining oil by means of a suitable solvent. Soon after the report was published, the water-determination apparatus described therein was modified so that both the oil and water contents of a core sample could be determined simultaneously. This method, which has been described by Yuster, is now widely used throughout the industry.

The Modarelli iron deposit , formerly known as the Requa iron deposit , is 44 miles by road south of Palisade , Nev . , on the Southern Pacific and Western Pacific Railroads . Construction of 10 miles of new road, which is necessary in case the property is exploited , will reduce this distance to about 28 miles . The deposit was discovered in 1905 , and patent was obtained in 1907 . The present owners obtained title to the property in recent years by paying the delinquent taxes . There has been no production . The ore deposit is a replacement of a Tertiary volcanic believed to be a rhyolite . Except for evidence of slight shearing , the deposit has no apparent structure . Hematite is the principal ore mineral ; it is fine-grained and is associated with very fine-grained apatite and unidentified minerals assumed to be alteration products of residual rhyolite minerals .

The Old Reliable copper mine was first examined by Harlow D. Phelps , an engineer of the Bureau of Mines , in October and November 1942 , in compliance with a request from the War Production Board , which furnished copies of assay maps of the 100- and 200-foot levels and requested that they be check-sampled . The author and R. li. Grantham and W. D. Hughes , engineers of the Bureau , made a second and more detailed examination later , after a number of manways had been opened that were inaccessible when the first examination was made .

This report covers the magnetic surveying done in the Plattsburg area , which was part of a general survey, of magnetite deposits in New York State . Other areas being surveyed are the Star Lake district , St. Lawrence County ; Brewster district , Putnam County; and the Sterling district , Orange County. Reconnaissance indicated an area about 3 miles long and 1,200 feet wide , but detailed surveys have been completed on only a portion of that area . In several districts , surveys of this type have served as a basis in the selection of areas for exploration by diamond drilling by the Bureau of Mines .

A preliminary examination of the mica deposits in Culberson and Hudspeth Counties , Texas , was made in September 1942 by A. B. Needham, district engineer of the Bureau of Mines . The deposits were reexamined by R. C. Redfield , associate mining engineer of the Bureau in November 1942, at which time he was accompanied by Philip S. Hoyt , geologist , and J. C. Moore , foreman of the Texas Mica and Feldspar Company . Exploratory work was started on February 16 , 1944 , and terminated on April 30 , 1944. A crew of 4 to 10 men was employed under the supervision of the authors .

C. R. Keyes, F. C. Schrader , F. A. Jones ( the first director of the New Mexico School of Mines , whose name was given the deposits ) , and N. H. Darton all described the Jones iron deposits within a decade after their discovery in 1902 . The earliest locations now on record were made in 1927. Interest in iron ores was revived during the second World War . Paul E. Pesonen , of the Bureau of Mines , reported on the deposits in December 1941 and proposed an extensive exploratory program . In March 1942 , the deposit was reported upon by C. H. Johnson , also of the Bureau of Mines , and a definite program of exploration was outlined .

The Blackbird district, Lemhi County, Idaho, has long been recognized as a potential source of cobalt and copper. Exploration of the early discoveries in the area was largely discouraged by the comparatively low grade and small size of the known ore bodies, the slight demand for cobalt, and the lack of adequate roads throughout the region. Recent advances in the field of alloy metallurgy culminated in a steadily expanding demand for cobalt. This demand was finally accentuated to critical proportions in 1940 by worldwide rearmament programs and by the threatened disruption of foreign imports by submarine warfare.

When the disruption of gold mining stopped the usual source of siliceous flux needed by copper smelters , sandstone copper deposits in northern Arizona offered possibilities as a source of the flux during the war emergency . The Federal Geological Survey , while making a comprehensive survey of sandstone copper deposits , investigated the Warm Springs mining district in northcentral Coconino County in August 1943. A month later , J. H. Hedges , chief of the Tucson Division , Mining Branch , Bureau of Mines , examined the operations in connection with an application for an access road . Both investigations concluded that the district , as an emergency source of copper-bearing siliceous flux , had considerable merit , provided high prices for copper continued in effect . Early in 1944 , V. M. Ryan and S. B. Atherley requested assistance from the Bureau in exploring various deposits on their property . The Bureau / drilled 152 holes , aggregating 3,756 feet , on the Petoskey and Mackin groups of claims . This report is based upon churn drilling done under contract from October 7 to November 25 , 1944 .

The Valery fluorspar deposit , also known as the Hamilton deposit , is northeast of Lovelock and 4 miles by poor dirt road east of U. S. Highway 40 . It is in the Humboldt Mining District , on the west side of the Humboldt Range , at an altitude of 6,000 to 6,500 feet . The property was examined by the Bureau of Mines on February 83/ and April 8 , 1944.4/ The last examination was made with an engineer of the Geological Survey.5/ Exploring by means of trenches , cuts , shaft sinking , coyote holes off the shaft , and a small amount of prospecting with short drill holes , was begun in January 1945 and was completed June 30 , 1945. An engineer6/ of the Geological Survey visited the property in April and again in June 1945 to complete a topographic map of the area and to note the results of exploration by the Bureau of Mines . Only minor surface exploring had been done on fluorspar occurrences previous to the Bureau's work . No mining equipment or living facilities are on the property .

"INTRODUCTION The Sullivan Mine was examined by Thomas L. Chapman, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in March 1943. Samples taken from the few mineralized exposures justified further investigation of the property. To determine whether extensive exploration of the property would be warranted, the Bureau did a small amount of trenching and underground work during April 1943, 3/ under Bureau project 1462.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its, primary objective the, more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "INTRODUCTION Molybdenite, the only common mineral and ore of molybdenum, occurs wide¬-spread but is concentrated as the main ore mineral in commercial quantities in only a few known deposits. Consequently, the Government sought additional sources of the minerals as a precaution against the possible shortage of moylbdenm for war uses. Upon request by the War Production Board, the New Year’s Eve and Esperanza properties of the Amargosa Molybdenum & Copper Corp. were investigated by the Geological Survey 3/ and the bureau of Mines 4/. The Survey appraised the mineral potentialities of the deposit and prepared topographic and geologic maps, and the Bureau made a preliminary engineering examination. The deposits were previously examined by W. J. Vanderwilt, consulting engineer. It was largely due to his recommendations that interest was stimulated in the deposits.Development on the New Year’s Eve deposit indicated a small tonnage of sub marginal ore. There was little development at the Esperanza, but surface examination revealed a large volume of rock containing a little molybdenite and a trace of copper in the oxidized outcrops. Some molybdic oxide was noted suggesting that some molybdenite might have been leached from the oxidized outcrops and that the molybdenite content in the sulfide zone might be higher."

"INTRODUCTION In December 1942, the-Bureau of Mines reported favorably on a proposal to grant Government assistance-in constructing an access road (consisting principally of a timber-pile bridge across the Rio Grande at Hot Springs, N. Mex.) to the property under lease to the United States Fluorspar Co. At that time the property was being developed actively, and there appeared to be no immediate-need for exploratory or metallurgical assistance by the Bureau of Mines.Because milling facilities were inadequate; the access-read project was eventually disapproved, but prior to disapproval the company had discontinued operations. In June 1943, exploration was resumed by the Humphreys Gold Corporation of Denver, which had subleased the property. Difficulty of access continued to interfere with exploratory progress. In July 1945, at the request of the lessee, the Bureau of Mines directed sampling, using company employees.At the completion of this sampling program, the Bureau of Mines concluded that the property was potentially a important source of fluorite but that further development for production appeared to depend largely on the establishment, by exploration, of adequate reserves. Because of the relatively easy position-of metallurgical-grade concentrate and ores, it also was deemed advisable to investigate the possibility of producing acid-grade concentrate from the ore, for which a demand was becoming evident. Accordingly, a program of trenching, diamond drilling, and metallurgical testing was undertaken by the Bureau. The results of its investigation are reported herein."
