Editor’s note: This is the first of two MINING ENGINEERING articles about the Grasberg deposit. The second, focusing on open pit mine development, will appear in the April issue of the magazine. The Grasberg porphyry copper-gold deposit of Freeport Indonesia Inc. lies within the Ertsberg Mineral District in central Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Grasberg deposit was discovered during a drilling campaign initiated in the mid-1980s. Production at the open pit de- posit commenced in December 1989. The Grasberg copper-gold ore body is contained within a young igneous complex of dioritic composition that intrudes limestones of the Tertiary New Guinea Group. Alteration is typical of porphyry copper deposits worldwide except that higher grade primary chalcopyrite with significant gold values is associated with a centrally located zone of strong quartz stockwork. Irian Jaya comprises the western half of the island of New Guinea. The Ertsberg District lies 70 km (43 miles) inland from the Arafura Sea at an altitudeof3500 to45OOm (11,480to 14,764 ft). It straddles the Papuan fold belt. This belt forms the east-west trending chain of mountains that extend the entire length of New Guinea and is the site of numerous mineral districts.

The production of oxygen on the Moon utilizing indigenous materials is paramount to a successful lunar colonization. And several processes have been put forth to accomplish this. The LLOX generation schemes which have received the most study to date are those involving?: 1) the reduction of ilmenite (FeTi03) by H2, C, CO, CH4, CO-CI2, & Cl2 plasma, 2) magma electrolysis, both unadulterated and fluoride-fluxed, and 3) several others, including carbo-chlorination, HF acid leaching, fluorine extraction, magma oxidation, and vapor pyrolysis. The H2 reductions of ilmenite and magma electrolysis processes have received the most study to date. They are both feasible schemes with various pros and cons, including their feedstock requirements. However, all processes should be addressed at least at the onset of our considerations. There is an obvious need for considerably more experimentation and study. Some of these requisite studies are in progress, and this paper reviews several of the most studied and feasible processes for winning oxygen from lunar materials.

Re-entrainment refers to dislodgement of particles deposited by both atmospheric and nonatmospheric processes and their subsequent insertion into a flowing field. Formation of sand dunes, snow drifts, soil erosion and fugitive dust emissions are a few examples of the natural occurrence of re-entrainment. Re-entrainment studies have been done for the estimation of potential hazards from nuclear fallouts. The phenomenon of re-entrainment has been utilized for the cleaning of wafers and filters. Re-entrainment is associated with both surface and underground mining activities. However, studies on dust re-entrainment in mine atmospheres are limited. Understanding the re-entrainment phenomenon is important because dust particles lying seemingly harmless on the ground and adhering to numerous surfaces can get re-entrained and become a health and safety hazard. There are significant differences in the kind of re-entrainment encountered in underground mines and those in other fields of interest. These major differences are air velocity, direction of air flow, particle size, amount of particles, and time of exposure. While numerous studies have been done in other fields to identify the role of interacting variables and their contribution to the mechanisms of re-entrainment, no similar reported work is available for dust in mine atmospheres. In this paper, recent research efforts on re-entrainment are reviewed. The most suitable form of representing re-entrainment in underground coal mine atmosphere is presented. Various approaches to studying re-entrainment phenomenon in mines are also outlined.

Cleaning of low-rank coals can have several meanings, depending upon the definitions of the terms "low rank" and "cleaning." In general, low-rank coals would be lignite or subbituminous according to the ASTM classification. For the purposes of this summary, cleaning is defined to be any process which materially reduces the proportion of inert material in the coal. For low-rank coals, this often means a reduction in moisture content since moisture is the major inert component in these coals. A brief discussion of conventional cleaning processes is included, as is an extensive reference list.

Powered dust-filtering helmets (dust helmets) have become increasingly prevalent in the underground mine environment in recent years. Many longwall operations use dust helmets to reduce the respirable dust exposures of miners required to work downwind of crusher, roof support and shearer operations. While continuous mining sections are usually less dusty, use of diesel equipment represents a new potential health problem. The U.S. Bureau of Mines recently conducted a study to determine the efficiency of a dust helmet on diesel-size particulate. Two underground evaluations were conducted on continuous mining sections that were using diesel haulage vehicles. Model No. AH21 Racal airstream helmets equipped with AS22-3 prefilters, AS23-3 main filters and AS60476 tyvek full-face seals were tested. Helmets were placed on mannequin heads and mounted in the ram car cabs. Andersen Model 298 (eight-stage) personal cascade impactors were used to sample air inside and outside of the helmet. Impactor stages 8 and the final filters were analyzed to determine submicrometer (0 - 0.93 µm) particle concentrations. Results from this study showed that the dust helmet was 94% (± 3% at 95% confidence level) efficient on submicrometer particles. Typically, very little coal dust is observed in the submicrometer size range, therefore, these particles were assumed to be from diesel exhaust. Results from this study indicate that proper use of the dust helmet on continuous mining sections that are using diesel haulage vehicles may be beneficial to the health of miners.

The experience of mining coal and gas outburstprone coal seams shows that the degree of outburst danger in various coal seams and even at different parts of the same seam are quite different, and that to deal with them respectively in different ways will not noly be significant to safety but bring us remarkable economical profit, Based on the statistical data,including elght static and dynamic factors, gathered from coal and gas outburst spots at Nantong colliery in Chong Qing district of China, this paper has partitioned the degree of outburst danger of the No. 5 seam there by means of Fuzzy Clustering method. Because in the evaluation multiple indices have been considered, the result of partitioning is identical to practice and more efficient in applications.

In determining the layout or combination of unit operations to be utilized in a modem preparation plant, several factors must be taken into account. Among these are the washability data, size consist data, the particular market or markets for the coal, the mining method used, the degree to which the coal must be prepared, expected fluctuations in raw coal and markets, and the overall economics of the process. In addition, there are the health and safety aspects of coal utilization and preparation. Chapter 1 of this book discusses the characteristics of coal and coal markets, while Chapter 2 deals with the design of preparation plants. Once the unit operations for a particular plant have been decided upon, these arrangement may be depicted by using a flowsheet. A coal preparation plant flowsheet is a two-dimensional graphical representation of the sequence of operations, the arrangement of machinery, and the flow of materials for a particular coal cleaning operation. The flowsheet is usually qualitative in nature, becoming more quantitative as material balances, water balances, numbers and sizes of various pieces of equipment, etc. are added. The usual convention in preparing a flowsheet is to show the feed flowing from left to right, starting at the top left and working down as in an all-gravity process. Various symbols are used for each unit operation as depicted on a flowsheet, and Fig. 14-37 is a compilation of the commonly accepted international standard symbols for each unit operation. Fig. 14-38 through Fig. 14-40 are flowsheets of various coal cleaning processes as published in the January 1976 issue of Coal Age. Each process has its own unique features which, among others, depend upon the coal being cleaned, the coal market, and the mining operation. Fig. 14-38, for example, is a flow diagram for a jig plant preparing steam coal from two strip mines located a few miles apart. In addition to the jig washer, cyclones are used to treat the finer size coal. Fig. 14-39 is a flowsheet of a heavy media plant using a heavy media washer for + %-in. (+6.3-mm) coal, froth flotation for -28 Tyler mesh (-0.6 mm) material, and dewatering phase units (dwp) for Y, in. x 28 Tyler mesh (6.3 x 0.6-mm) cleaning of steam coal. In addition, thermal drying, centrifuge drying, and the use of vacuum disk filters and thickeners for dewatering are depicted. Fig. 14-40 is a flowsheet of a plant producing metallurgical coal. In addition to the heavy media and froth flotation circuits, a tabling circuit is also employed. These flowsheets are intended to give the reader an example of how the various unit operations for coal cleaning may be linked together. Figs. 14-41 and 14-42 illustrate the conversion of block diagrams into an IS0 prescribed set of symbols.

The Consejo de Recursos Naturales No Renovables of the Mexican government entered into an agreement with the United Nations in 1964 for the mineral exploration of a large area in Estado de Sonora, Mexico. The agreement called for a systematic exploration for copper in northern Sonora based on photogeologic mapping, aerial reconnaissance, and geochemical stream sediment sampling. The UN-CRNNR investigations resulted in the detection of anomalous copper values in sediment from the Arroyo Cruz de Cafiada. The anomaly was followed upstream to its source, which ultimately proved to be the La Caridad ore body (see Fig. 1). Soil copper and molybdenum values were found over a large area, and further detailed geologic and geophysical investigations were instituted of the anomalous area. David Coolbaugh was largely responsible for the follow-up work. An induced polarization (IP) survey found a roughly circular region of "highs" that coincided with a high soil copper anomaly. The circular anomalies ringed the topographic feature that ultimately was found to contain the Caridad ore body. Soil geochemical copper response over the ore body was subdued, because the soils were derived from a leached capping, whereas leaching in fringe areas that contained less veining was less intense. The ore body was also ringed by the typical high pyrite zone, and this was the anomaly detected by the IP survey. The UN began drilling in the fall of 1966. Eleven holes tested the IP-Cu geochemical high, but none were of commercial interest. The project was returned to the Consejo and was reviewed in the field by G.P. Salas and V.F. Hollister. It was found that the leached capping had not been tested by the past activities, and the Consejo elected to explore that area in 1967. The capping was evaluated by Salas and Hollister and drilling by the Consejo began in 1967. Commercial grade ore intercepts were found in the first hole. The Consejo drilled nine holes, of which eight were commercial. At least 90.7 Mt (100 million tons) of 0.8% copper were indicated by the Consejo in eight holes. The Bureau of Mines is investigating the Co and Mn resource of the West-Central Arkansas District, including field investigations, mineralogical characterization, beneficiation, and hydrometallurgical tests. The deposits occur within the Ouachita Mountains and are con-trolled structurally, occurring along the axes of anticlines making up the mountain ridges. Brecciated novaculite is cemented with a mixture of Mn oxides, primarily cryptomelane and psilome-lane. Cobalt is concentrated within a particular Mn oxide phase, lithiophorite. Chemical analyses on head samples reported up to 25 pct Mn and 0.17 pct Co. Magnetic separation yielded products with up to 41 pct Mn and 0.22 pct Co at recoveries of 95 pct Mn and 93 pct Co.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated the recovery of metals from copper industry wastes by sulfuric acid leaching in a semi-continuous, bench-scale system to solubilize arsenic, copper, and molybdenum. Leach residues contained approximately 40 wt pct PbSO4, suitable for processing at a lead smelter. Arsenic and molybdenum removal from leach solution was examined using solvent extraction with tri-n-butyl-phosphate (TBP), and copper was subsequently recovered by cementation. Bleed electrolyte from a copper refinery was determined to be a viable source of acid for the initial leach stage.

In order to model accurately a mine ventilation system in an existing mine, it is necessary to determine the resistance to airflow in all main airways. This is accomplished by measuring the airflow and pressure differential in each airway. Gauge and tube methods have been used to determine pressure drops in ramps and level airways. However, it has rarely been used in evaluating the frictional pressure drop in shafts. Because shafts commonly have the highest pressure loss in mines, it is critical that the resistance of these airways be determined accurately. This paper describes the theory and practice of using the gauge and tube method for determining the pressure drop in shafts. The pros and cons of using this method are discussed as well as a comparison between the gauge and tube and barometer measurement techniques. Case studies showing the accuracy of shaft gauge and tube measurements are also presented.

Noise control is an important consideration in the design and operation of coal preparation plants. It is essential to understand and control noise sources to provide a safe environment for operating personnel. The average noise exposure levels in a typical coal preparation plant generally range between 95 and 100 db. An operator should not be exposed to noise levels of this magnitude for more than 4 and 2 hr, respectively, according to MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) regulations. The major noise sources in a coal preparation plant include noise from impacting the inside surfaces of steel chutes, vibrating screens, coal crushers, pumps, motors, fans, and blowers. The magnitude of noise varies considerably from one situation to another. NOISE EXPOSURE IN COAL PREPARATION PLANTS Noise regulations established by the Occupational Safety and Health and- ministration (OSHA) are accepted by MSHA relative to coal preparation plants. Fig. 14-43 shows a graph of the time of noise exposure in hours per day to which a worker can be exposed for each A-weighted sound level. According to this graph, a worker is permitted to spend 8 hr in a 90-db noise environment, but that time must be halved when the A-weighted sound level increases 5 db. The noise dosage a worker receives is determined by the ratio of the length of time the worker spends in a particular noise environment divided by the length of time he is permitted to spend in that environment. If the worker is exposed to several different sound levels, his total dosage would be the sum of each of the individual dosages. The equation for determining the dosage is: where C is the actual duration of exposure at a given steady state noise level and T is the noise exposure limit for the level present during the time C According to MSHA regulations, the dosage, D, should not exceed one (1) for any worker for a full day of work. As an example of typical plant noise levels, vibratory screens and crushers emanate noise levels in excess of 90 db at a distance of 3 ft (0.9 m) with no material flow. THE ROLE OF MANAGEMENT IN PLANT SAFETY Safe Production In plant management, safe production is an ideal. It becomes reality when: 1. Plant employees work in healthful and safe conditions. 2. Plant safety is in harmony with productivity. 3. Worker absenteeism and turnover are low-the work force is stable. Plant management must apply its talents, skills, and resources to build and maintain the foundations of safe production on a system of policies, procedures, and attitudes. It must do so by marshaling all managerial functions - staffing, direction, control, innovation, and representation-toward that goal. Ideally, a plant safety program is proactive. Management should plan and implement safety activities that are aimed at prevention. Past accidents-accomplished facts-should not be the sole guide of future actions. In other words, positive preventive measures, not the fewness of accidents are the criteria for safety production. An ideal safety program is one which is cost effective. Management should view plant safety as part of a broader program-loss control. Loss control includes prevention of fires and other accidents, unhealthful conditions, and occurrences that cause bodily injury, illness, property loss, or damage. Management evaluates the employees' productivity and safety. An effective training program aimed at loss control is the hallmark of safe production. Ideally, both labor and management should be well versed in safety. They believe in the premise that work-related injury and illness, as well as property loss and damage from fire and other accidents, are manageable and preventable. Such belief prompts them to learn more about the work process and potential hazards associated with each job. They also learn how to expect and prevent fues and other accidents, and respond to emergencies at the plant. Plant management determines which individuals or groups of employees are accountable for the following functions:

Flotation tests were carried out on six coal samples of different rank as well as their oxidized samples. A mixture of diesel oil and alcohols was used in these tests. Surface oxidation caused a distinct decrease during flotation recovery with some improvement in the grade. The reduction in the recovery increased with increasing concentration of the oxidizing agent. The floatability of low rank coals was affected by oxidation to a higher degree than the floatability of medium and high rank coals. The recovery-size curves of oxidized samples were similar in shape to the recovery-size curves of non-oxidized coals.

INTRODUCTION Evaluation and optimization of mineral processes has been going on since the the first plant started hundreds of years ago. A huge mass of knowledge has been collected since then. The main problem with this type of empirical knowledge of complex processes is that it is very difficult to formulate and document. The methods used for collecting the knowledge is not consistent but-varies with "he person" that does it. In the late 60's and early 70's efforts were made to use computer based techniques to evaluate process performance and to formulate process models for mineral processes. Models were developed, such as the flotation model by R. P. King (1973) which is still used to simulate flotation circuit behaviour. During the 70's. a number of mass balancing packages were developed together with process simulation packages. The industrial sector also made great efforts to develop and utilize computer based systems for process control and evaluation. The expert system that BOLIDEN created in 1974 at the Kristineberg plant was a remarkable achievement considering the hardware (CDC 3600) and the software tools (FORTRAN) available at that time. The main obstacle to successfully implement optimizing computer control of mineral processes was and still is the limited knowledge about the dynamics of complex processes. There are, however. many activities going on in this area today and it seems that the technology is very near a break through. Process evaluation is the most important tool to improve and maintain the optimal performance of a process. Today dedicated computer based techniques are used for fast and reliable screening of the processes. The stages in process evaluation consist of three basic steps: - Data acquisition, manually or by data logging. - Data refining, mass balancing and parameter calculation. - Data evaluation. The refined data can then be used for model construction/calibration and subsequently for process simulation. Jigging is a process of particle stratification in which the particle re- arrangement results from an alternate expansion and compaction of a bed of particles by pulsating fluid flow. The vertical direction of fluid flow is reversed periodically. The rearrangement results in layers of particles that are arranged by increasing density from top to bottom of the bed. This response, developed from the many and continuously varying forces acting upon the particles, permits a solid-solid separation more related to particle density and less to particle size than any other "hydraulic-type" process. The stratification is usually carried out in a rectangular, open-top container called a jig, in which the mass of particles (termed a "bed") is supported on a perforated base through which the water flows in alternating directions. The coal particles, in addition to the vertically expanded and compacted bed motion, move continuously, horizontally across the supporting screen. Following the particle stratification, the particle bed is physically "cut" at a desired horizontal particle density plane to separate the desired clean coal product from the more dense refuse. The jig system includes means for continuously introducing the raw coal and for moving the water through the coal bed in a controllable manner, as well as for separating and removing the stratified particles from the system as two or more product streams. In coal preparation, this highly versatile unit operation is applied preferably to a wide size range of particles with top sizes up to 8 in. (20 cm) rather than to a closely sized fraction. In gravity ranges, the process has been applied to gold particles with a density of 19.3 and to coal particles having densities less than 1.30. Single jig washers have capacities from 5 (4.6) to greater than 700 tph (637 t/h) of feed coal. The separation results attainable by jigging have favored this unit operation as optimum for creating a clean coal product as required by steam coal specifications. Al- though the jig is used in preparing coals which are difficult to separate, its limitations to achieve both quality products and high recovery are being recognized in comparison with heavy media-based processes which make sharper separations from feeds having high "near-gravity" contents. The accu- racy of the densimetric stratification in the upper portions of the jig bed are less precise. It follows that coals with more than 10% near-gravity material

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated rapid froth flotation through the use of more efficient bubble-particle collisions that improved the overall flotation kinetics. An in-line static mixer efficiently mixed the air bubbles, water, and ore, rapidly attaching the hydrophobic mineral to the bubble surface. As the mixture entered the flotation chamber, the hydrophobic mineral was already attached to the bubbles and was quickly floated away from the remaining ore pulp. A rougher concentrate containing 4.5 pct copper was obtained from a western porphyry copper ore containing 0.67 pct copper. Over 99 pct copper was recovered from the ore at a rate 7 times faster than conventional flotation.

Gentlemen; Rainy day in Upper Michigan, a good time to catch up on reading. Am doing that, and have a couple of questions concerning the K and P paper on roof problems and supports. I wonder if the authors can enlighten me. The compressive strength of the coal was reported as 4.4 MPa (633 psi) and compressive stresses measured in the coal seam were reported at around 27.6 and 48.2 MPa (4000 and 7000 psi ). Can such a soft coal actually contain such a high level of stress? Can it be measured as if the material were elastic, or does the coal behave plastically? Can that stress level be confirmed with hydraulic load cells? And if the coal is so soft, and if it is plastic, why is the stress field not hydrostatic? The intact roofrock appears to be unusually strong, with compressive strength reported at around 145 MPa (21,000 psi), and some failures were noted as soon as the rock was exposed. Many gold producing states are requiring rinsing of spent heaps to render the leached ore compatible with the environment and are placing reatrictiona on effluent pH, cyanide, and metals concentrations. Parameters which may affect efficient rinsing of heaps have been investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in laboratory column studies. Rinse profiles for cyanide, metals, and pH as a function of the volume of water passed through the spent ore are presented. Fresh water rinsing of spent ore in columns showed that rinsing of cyanide was not affected by the rinse solution application rate. Interrupted rinsing with a rest period between applications reduced the volume of water required to meet effluent cyanide concentrations. Chemical oxidation of the effluent with recycle of the rinse solutions reduced effluent cyanide concentrations and the volume of waste solution generated. Water rinsing was not successful in reducing the alkalinity of the cement agglomerated ore. A dilute acid solution had to be applied after cyanide removal to reduce effluent pH levels to specified limits.

The single line grinding circuit at Bond Gold's Colosseum mine consists of variable speed drive semi-autogenous (SAG) milling and secondary grinding with a fixed speed ball mill. There are several advantages and disadvantages of operating SAG mills with variable speed drives. Discussion in this paper will focus on the effects of variable speed SAG milling in relation to mill liner wear, grinding media consumption, and mill operating availability. Operating experiences, corresponding mill data, and pertinent design changes are also presented.
