Grinding in steel mills adversely affects the flotation of pyrrhotite. The electrochemical nature of inter action between pyrrhotite and active metals was investigated by contacting pyrrhotite with platinum at different applied potentials. Flotation tests, scanning electron microscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were wed to examine the surface properties of pyrrhotite. The formation of hydroxide or oxide and sulfate species of iron through the oxygen reduction reaction at the cathodically polarized surface of pyrrhotite was shown to be the mechanism responsible for the reduced floatability of pyrrhotite.

At the Kidd Creek mine operated by Ecstall Mining, Ltd. near Timmins, Ontario, Honeywell has installed a sophisticated new quick- thinking computer system that keeps tabs on conditions along three separate processing streams at once and relays continuous 60-second data to the mill operator. Believed to be the first of its kind, the system picks up data from two independent x-ray spectrometers simultaneously. A digital computer from Honeywell's Computer Control Division receives and interprets real-time information gathered by online x-ray analyzers, and the system then advises control room operators of the relative amount of each of five elements at five points in each of the three process streams. The system is reported to provide a quantitative analysis of the five elements at a given point in the process within one minute-which is about 120 times as fast as a chemical laboratory assay could be performed. With this instant data at his command, the mill operator can make timely process adjustments to correct any deviation from optimum flotation results, thus salvaging valuable minerals that would inevitably be lost with slower detection methods. The minerals recovered at Kidd creek are copper, lead, iron, silver and zinc.

This paper describes the results of a study carried out to examine the feasibility of electrolytic recovery of silver from cyanide leach liquor generated from a Western Australian silver mine tailings using a novel high mass transfer electrowinning cell. The proposed circuit involves heap leaching and electrowinning in a closed loop. The filter-press-like closed electrode arrangement of the cell allowed much improved mass transfer of metal ions to the cathode surface, making direct electrowinning of metals from dilute solutions feasible. The tests were conducted both in the laboratory and at large scale using a prototype with ~1.0 m2 cathode area. The results showed that the recovery of silver from as low as 250 mg L-1tenor was feasible. The silver deposit produced with the prototype cell was non-adherent and powdery and could be readily removed from the closed cell. A system was developed so that silver powder was discharged continuously during the run.

Sound experimental ingots of zinc alloys for use as rolling slabs were cast with a specially constructed, semicontinuous casting machine. Nominal alloy compositions of Zn-1.0 percent Cu, Zn-0.12 and 0.36 percent Ti, and Zn-1.0 percent Cu-0.03 to 0.36 percent Ti were cast. This Bureau of Mines study was conducted to evaluate the suitability of the casting procedure for providing stock for rolling into sheet. Microscopic examination of ingot sections revealed structures in which grain size varied from the outer to center ingot zones. Columnar grains present in the center zone of the Zn-1.0 percent Cu ingot were absent in the titanium-containing ingots. The ingots with titanium displayed a finer grain size and eutectic structure in the center ingot zone than in the outer zone; the transition in grain size between the two zones was quite abrupt in some ingots. The overall grain size of the titanium-containing ingots was finer than that of alloys cast by more conventional methods. Chemical analysis revealed that compositional segregation is not a significant factor in the formation of the ingot structure. Microstructural studies of small ingots of similar alloys solidified at slow, fast, and intermediate rates confirmed that the ingot structure in the semicontinuous-cast ingots is related to cooling rate, which is, in turn, related to the particular casting machine design and the influx of cooling water on the withdrawing ingots. Microstructures of thin sheet hot-rolled from slabs of the semicontinuous-cast ingots demonstrated that the ingot structure does not preclude the rolling of sheet having a uniform microstructure. Results of hardness surveys of the semicontinuous-cast ingots demonstrated that copper and titanium exert essentially additive hardening effects in these cast alloys.

Foulger presiding. PRESIDENT FOULGER: We are a little bit late getting started, gentlemen. We have a few more members out there to register and we will wait just a few minutes until they are finished and then we will begin. The Honorable Earl J. Glade won't be here until 2:00 o'clock this afternoon. I understand lie was unavoidably detained so we are going to go down this program pretty rapidly when we get started, but we want to wait until those gentlemen still unregistered come in. Gentlemen, we will try and start now. Mr. Whiteside suggests that the minutes for last year probably should be read. However, they were published in the proceedings for last year, so I presume it will be just as well to dispense with the minutes and get going here before we lose too much time.

Sediment Quality Guidelines can provide target values that should not be exceeded when seabed deposits are disturbed for mining, waste discharge or other purposes. Three sets of Guidelines have appeared in 1994 and 1995: US NOAA (updated from 1991), Environment Canada (EnvCan) and Equilibrium Partitioning (EqP) developed in the UK from US Water Quality Criteria. The US NOAA and EnvCan Guidelines have been developed by comparing many experimental and site data sets, and have concluded that levels below which effects rarely occur, or above which probably will occur, are useful guidelines. US NOAA uses the terms ERL and ERM for these two levels, and EnvCan TEL and PEL. The EqP concept is that a value can be calculated below which trace metals present cannot raise the concentration in the interstitial water. There are some problems in comparing units, but the comparison shows in general that the EnvCan levels are less than, and down to half of, the US NOAA levels. EqP levels vary but are generally fairly close to US NOAA ERL levels, with one major exception. The EqP level for mercury is far lower than either US NOAAor EnvCan levels, at 0.008 mg kg-1 compared to 0.15 (ERL) and 0.13 (TEL) mg kg-1 respectively. Comments will be solicited on how such differing Guidelines should be used site-specifically for environmental management at mining operations, (1) in the regions for where they were developed, and (2) elsewhere.

The technique of Stabilising Columns (product names are for example "Stabilisierungssaulen" (STS) or "Coplan Stabilisierungs-verfahren" (CSV)) is gradually becoming well accepted for ground improvement. The installation, dimensioning and quality control are standardized by DGGT (German Association for Geotechnique), working committee 2.8, of which until now only part one exists for dry columns. This paper describes the installation and testing of stabilising columns for a ground improvement project. To achieve comparable results in testing both ready mixed concrete and dry binder had been used for production.

Results of direct shear tests on rock discontinuities and triaxial compression tests on intact rocks are presented and - discussed. The main parameters considered area stress functions, angle of internal friction and cohesion variations. Primary objective of this work is to determine relationships that adequately describe the rock behaviour for design of mining excavations, while still maintaining a certain degree of simplicity.

This Peirce-Smith Converting Centennial symposium is celebrating the contributions of two men, William Peirce and E.A.C. Smith, in advancing technology allowing the copper industry to realize its full potential. However, theirs is representative of a larger story: New, simpler technology releasing the stranglehold of older, more complicated technology, new developments in vessel configuration and design finding alternate routes around dead ends in operability, advances in technique and concepts removing roadblocks of cycle time and capacity, and overall innovation opening up vast new reserves around the world to those companies willing to embrace those improvements. Our story is also one of personalities, stubborn smeltermen versus the innovators, those inside the industry versus those from outside. It is a story of an initial borrowing from the steel industry, but also Peirce and Smith, from the refining end of the copper business, taking the ideas of Baggaley from Pittsburgh’s steel and airbrake industry, who built on what Hollway, Manhès and David, Douglas, and others had done in smelter tests, further to compete with the previous primacy and closely held expertise of the copper smeltermen in Wales. These advances have been well recorded in photographs taken over the last 150 years. A number were submitted especially for this symposium. Many others were published in the mining and metallurgy press of the times. Several mining schools also retained copies of photos either taken during field trips, or donated to the school by alumni and operating companies. This presentation will provide a selection and discussion from these sources of “converters in action”, describing the various designs, operations and developments depicted. The focus here will be on the first roughly 60 years of copper converter development, from Bessemer’s days at the dawn of this new idea, up to and slightly past the time of initial adoption of Peirce and Smith’s designs.

The petroleum industry has developed and utilized many aspects of rock mechanics, both in its search for petroleum and in its drilling and production operations. Geological exploration activities have been improved by knowledge of earth tectonic forces. Better understanding of seismic wave motion has contributed to a more accurate interpretation of geophysical data. Drilling activities have benefited from basic knowledge of rock strength behavior under in situ conditions. Production has been significantly increased through stimulation techniques, such as hydraulic fracturing. The ability of rock mechanics work to contribute to future petroleum activities will depend upon the development of knowledge of rock properties under greater depths and at higher pressures and temperatures.

The distribution equilibria of lead, zinc and copper between CaO-Si02-Ah03 melts and liquid copper were measured at 1623K under a controlled H2-C02 atmosphere. The distribution ratios were plotted against the oxygen partial pressure, and reasonable oxide forms dissolved in the melts were estimated from the slopes of the plots. The activity coefficients of zinc oxide (ZnO), lead oxide (PbO) and cuprous oxide (CuO0.5) increased with increasing slag basicity, defined by XCao/Xsio2 The temperature dependence of the activity coefficients was also measured.

Activity in the oil industry in Peru during 1930 was confined almost entirely to the three old producing fields in the northern coastal area. In the eastern part of Peru, in the valleys of the Maranon, Ueayali and Huallaga rivers, additional geologic work was carried on, but no drilling was undertaken. The Peruvian Government granted a concession on June 27, 1930, to W. R. Davis and associates for the building of a railroad from the west coast at Bayovar to Yurimaguas on the Huallaga River. This concession contemplates the construction of 800 to 900 km. of railroad across the Andes and carries with it a grant to the concessionaire of 12,500,000 acres of land with oil and mineral rights. A similar concession was granted in 1926 but after several extensions was rescinded in July, 1929, on the grounds that the concessionaire had failed to begin work on the railroad within the time limits of the contract and its extensions. The reduction of approximately 8 per cent. in 1930 as compared with 1929 is the result of the world's overproduction and the attempt on the part of the International to restrict the output to conform with the available market. Among the rich mineral deposits of the great Appalachian field, the Pittsburgh coal bed stands pre-eminent. Other coal beds may cover a wider area, or extend with greater persistence, but none surpasses the Pittsburgh seam in economic importance and value. It was well named by Rogers, and his able assistants of the First Geological Survey of Pennsylvania, in honor of the city to whose industrial growth and supremacy it has contributed so much. Whether or not the prophetic eye of that able geologist ever comprehended fully the part which this coal bed was to play in the future history of the city that gave it a name we do not know; but certain it is that the 7 ft. of fossil fuel, which, in Rogers' time, circled in a long black band around the hills and, overlooking the site of Pittsburgh from an elevation of 400 ft. above the water of the Allegheny and Monongahela, extended up the latter stream in an unbroken sheet for a distance of 200 miles, has been the most potent factor in that wonderful modern growth that has made the Pittsburgh district the manufacturing center of America, and that bids fair to continue until it shall surpass every other district in the world, even if it does not now hold such primacy.' The Pittsburgh coal bed stands today as probably the largest contributor of wealth of any single mineral deposit in the world. If it is not, what other deposit is? It has contributed to Pennsylvania alone more than 2,500,000,000 tons of high-grade coal worth nearly $4,000,000,000; since 1910, it has added more than $2,500,000,000 to the value of Pennsylvania's mineral output. The effect of the stability and rheological properties of magnetite dense medium on the separation performance of a 6" dense medium cyclone (DMC) is studied with the use of fine density tracers. The tests in which different size fractions of magnetite are used to prepare the dense media reveal that at low medium densities (<1.5 s.g.), the best separation is achieved when using the magnetite with intermediate particle sizes (du3.2=18 11m). At medium densities above 1.5 s.g., however, it is beneficial to use coarser magnetite. With the fine magnetite dense medium, an increase in medium density results in a decrease in separation efficiency. With the coarse magnetite, an opposite trend is observed; the separation efficiency is improved with increasing medium density. An accurate cutpoint control is critical in gravity separation. The cutpoint shift for coarse feed particles is found to decrease with increasing medium stability (density). It assumes values close to zero in a highly stable fine dense medium. When the size of the treated particles is small (<0.5 mm), the cutpoint shift is mainly determined by medium rheology. With increasing medium density, a continuous increase in cutpoint shift is observed.

This afternoon, I would like to discuss what is probably the weakest circuit in any mineral processing operation - the management control loop.In their recent book ""The Winning Streak"", Goldsmith and Clutter describe extensive research on unsuccessful companies. They conclude that ineffective control, which does not immediately identify the problems, is one of the main failings of unsuccessful companies.We will look at the three key components of control which, from the manager's point of view, ensure that the loop is complete. These three are:• measuring what's happening,• assessing its significance, Rnd• altering performance.If we compare management control to process control as shown in this first figure, ""We see that parameter sensing by the analyzer in a process circuit is analogous to performance monitoring by management in a responsibility centre. The analyzer senses temperature, pressure, flow, weight or some surrogate indicator such as colour to indicate ion concentration. For manage1nent, the performance to rnonitor is dependent upon the objectives of the responsibility centre, and the key factors which affect these objectives."

During iron ore pellet production, bentonite clay is used as a binder. Typical pellet plants spend from $3 million to $5 million annually for the clay. If bentonite dosages could be reduced by using it more efficiently, a significant cost savings would result. If the binding mechanisms can be completely understood, procedures can be developed to use bentonite more efficiently. Classical bentonite bonding theory is based on the behavior of bentonite at low percent solids and high mixing shear rates. Under these conditions, bentonite was understood to expand, disperse into platelets, and dry into a bonding "film" or "gel." However, these are not the conditions that exist during pelletization, which is carried out at high percent solids and relatively low shear rates. In this paper SEM imaging was used to identify and explain the bonding mechanisms of bentonite on the surface of magnetite concentrate. It was determined that bentonite would form a fibrous network under the proper conditions and that the formation of these fibers corresponded with an increase in the bonding of particles by the bentonite.
