THE means relied on to attain uniformity in Bessemer steel may be enumerated as follows : I. The appearance of the flame. II. The appearance of the slag. III. The spectrum of the flame. IV. Examination of the steel itself. At present, I wish briefly to bring forward a few considerations with reference to the last two mentioned, namely, the conditions favoring the employment of the spectroscope and examination of the steel. From the amount of careful investigation which has been devoted to the examination of the Bessemer flame by the spectroscope, both on the part of scientists and practical metallurgists, one might reasonably expect some results definite and satisfactory in their nature, first, as regards the nature of the flame, and second, as to the practical value of the spectroscope as a guide in conducting the process. We find, in fact, however, that uncertainty and confusion still exist. In Germany, where this subject has received the greatest attention, it is now very generally conceded that manganese is the cause of the well-known groups of dark bands that characterize the Bessemer spectrum. Nor is it easy to see how we can avoid accepting this conclusion, when Wedding and Von Lichtenfels have produced the manganese spectrum and found it to correspond closely with that shown by the Bessemer flame. But it is evident, on a moment's reflection, as Roscoe has recently brought forward, that manganese cannot be the only cause of the Bessemer spectrum, for we notice the characteristic bands quite as

The plummet lamp, to which I called the attention of the Institute, at the Bethlehem meeting, in August, 1871, with the improvement of the compensating ring, suggested by Mr. Heller, having come into general use for mine surveying in this country, and my attention having been called to the fact that it could not be employed in mines in which there was danger of meeting with fire-damp, I have so modified it that it can be used in all cases with safety. Mining engineers, who are in active practice in those districts where fire-damp is met with in the mines (and I am sorry to say it is becoming much more common in the anthracite regions), know how dangerous their work is when they are called upon to survey such mines, particularly when they are obliged to run lines in those parts of a mine which have been unworked, since by opening of doors, brattice, etc., to get the sights, they are liable to disarrange the currents of air, and cause any fire-damp that may have accumulated in the old workings to find its way into the levels, etc., where the party is at work. It is, therefore, very dangerous to leave an open light (such as the original form of plummet lamp) in an old breast or gangway, even when the safety lamp has shown that no fire-damp is present, for the opening of the doors, etc., may drive the fire-damp to the light, and thus endanger the lives of the engineers. The improved form of plummet lamp, now shown to you, can be used either with or without the safety apparatus. Upon the top of the plumb-bob portion of the old lamp a screw is cut, upon which a ring A is screwed. (See Plate 11.) On the external cylindrical part of this ring two small conical holes are drilled, 180' apart. The compensating ring, by which the plumb-bob part of the lamp is suspended, passes over the ring A, and is fastened to it by two small screws having conical points, which fit into the conical holes in the ring A. The safety apparatus resembles, to a certain extent, that of the Mueseler lamp. It consists of a ring B and plate C, which are united by four rods. The plate C has a cylindrical hole in the middle, and four apertures distributed radially around it. The use of the verb in this mood is not as common as formerly: at the time, for example, when the Bible was translated and the plays of Shakespeare were written. Nevertheless it is an essential part of literary English. In editing the 'Mining and Scientific Press' I do not insist upon the use of the subjunctive in articles that are contributed from the outside, but it is deemed proper in all our editorial writing. To speak plainly, the subjunctive is a mark of scholarship; it is ignored by those that are not particular in such matters, and unfortunately it is a source of perplexity to many that are entirely unfamiliar with the use of it. Therefore, as an editor, I think it well to allow the indicative mood to be used by contributors in sentences in which, to be strictly correct, the verbs should be in the subjunctive mood. The fact that most subjunctives are indistinguishable in form from indicatives is another cause of trouble to the uninitiated.* For example, the verbs in such phrases as "Suffice it to say", '(So help me God ", and "God save the King" are in the subjunctive. One reason why the subjunctive is becoming uncommon is the growing habit of expressing the subjunctive meaning by aid of auxiliary verbs that are coupled with the infinitive; thus: "It will sate to say" and "May God save the King". The subjunctive is common in subordinate clauses, and that is how it obtained its name, 'subjunctive', meaning

DAVID COLE, EL PASO, TEXAS (communication to the Secretary*).-I have read with great interest Dr. Gahl's painstaking paper giving us the details of development of flotation at Inspiration, and it seems to me that he has covered the ground so completely that there is little to discuss or criticize in connection with his subject. While it was in operation, the test mill in which the campaign was carried on was the Mecca of mill men and metallurgists. There was much to interest students of milling methods in addition to the flotation experiments, and readers of Dr. Gahl's paper will miss the information they hoped to get when the "pilot" mill results were. finally compiled, and I hope that the following remarks outlining from a distance some of the things that happened there will bring forth the rest of the story of the performances recorded in these important experiments. Prior to the use of flotation methods in concentration it had long been recognized that the "unavoidable" losses of sulphides were in the slime which is inevitably produced in the grinding operations required to free the minerals to be separated. Classifying the feed prior to its final stage of treatment had long been in style in milling. This assisted the sand-handling machines and resulted in lowering the tailings made by them, but at the expense of the slime-handling department; and while little was expected of the latter, the wisdom of complicating the process by hydraulic classification was being seriously questioned. TO those who are in a position to carry the thought to a conclusion, I would like to present a theory of the cause of blisters in ' galvanized sheets. Blisters that are caused from piping and shrinkage cavities will not be considered, because the reason for their formation is entirely obvious. Blisters that periodically occur, with no apparent system of location, number, size or grouping, and then disappear with no apparent change in manufacturing method, are the ones to which this theory would apply. Examination of blisters of the latter type has shown that they contain hydrogen gas at atmospheric pres-sure, and that occasionally traces of oxide or sulfide are found on the inner surface of the blisters. These two characteristics have led to the rather general idea that hydrogen gas generated in pickling, and that iron oxide supposed to be inherent in the ingot and causing weak spots, were, in some manner, responsible for the development of blisters in galvanizing. The theory which I wish to advance is that these blisters are caused by moisture that has penetrated the steel after the annealing operation. This moisture comes from the atmosphere, or from pickling or wash-ing, and when it is suddenly expanded into superheated steam in galvanizing, the increase in volume is so great that it cannot escape with sufficient rapidity through the small opening which it entered as moisture. The pressure so generated forces the sheet apart along those lines of lamination that may be found in practically all flat sections of steel rolled comparatively cold.

When I first received the announcement of this meeting I was pleased to see that this 14th APCOM Symposium had expanded its range of interest. One new topic to be considered this year is long range or strategic planning--the continuous process by which current risk taking decisions are made systematically, and with the greatest knowledge of future impact. Long range planning should receive our attention. It is the first step in the management process and the foundation of many--if not all --key managerial decisions. Improvements made at this stage of managing are almost certain to be of benefit in later stages of decision making. It is obvious to many of us that in a physical process such as mineral beneficiation, one does not concentrate all of one's attention on the flotation design without also considering the grinding, cycloning, and desliming stages of the process. Taking this a step further it would be equally erroneous to find a mineral engineer designing a mill without due consideration for mine, smelter and refinery and beyond that the sales goals, growth and profit objectives of the firm itself. And yet, how many times have we seen organizations staff and reorganize without consideration of an overall plan; without adherence to the management process which by its definition, calls for a plan first, followed by the appropriate organization and staff. The computer applications traditionally discussed at APCOM meetings have concentrated on areas dealing with things and people-- the implementation of the plan, rather than with concepts and ideas, the formulation of the plan.

A great deal is known, in a qualitative sense, about the performance of CMI EB-36 centrifuges. The manufacturer can give reliable guidance for the proper operation of its centrifuges and can give general estimates of expected product moisture and recovery. Quantitative estimates of the effects of changes in the various operating parameters are more difficult to find. The engineer faced with designing a preparation plant may be without the specific data needed to make decisions. For example, to obtain optimum product moisture when drying 9.5 mm X 595 µm (0.4 in. x 28 mesh) coal the centrifuge manufacturer recommends having no more than 5% -595 µm (-28 mesh) material in the centrifuge feed. They know that more -595 µm (-28 mesh)material in the feed will cause higher product moistures, but they usually cannot quantify the increased moisture or describe the shape of the product moisture versus -595 µm (-28 mesh) in the feed curve. This study was conceived to provide quantitative information on the EB-36 centrifuges, focusing on product moisture, recovery, and size degradation. All of the centrifuges tested were Model EB-36 dryers from Centrifugal and Mechanical Industries Inc. (CMI), with feeds in the nominal 9.5 mm x 595 pm (0.4 in. x 28 mesh) range. These are typical centrifugal dryers in this application, and many were available for testing.

THERE exists an unconfirmed opinion among many ironmasters that the combination of a small quantity of manganese, chromium, titanium, tungsten, aluminium, nickel, and some of the metalloids with iron has a beneficial effect upon the quality. And the impression prevails in some localities that the excellence of steel greatly depends upon the influence of some of these elements. But as the recorded experiments are so meagrely described, and made under such various conditions, the student in search of information upon the subject is somewhat bewildered by the contradiction of the opinions expressed. Observing some interesting phenomena while experimenting with an alloy of iron, copper, and nickel, I was led to determine the effect of some of the metals upon iron as free from contamination by other elements as it is possible to procure in prac¬tice, in order that the result of an alloy of an individual metal with iron might be more closely studied ; for it is almost an impossibility to determine the influence of a small amount of one element upon a metal combined with a large amount of another, and the mere presence of another sometimes makes this difficult. And as most of the experiments recorded upon this subject have been made with iron containing sufficient carbon and other elements to interfere with the effect of that metal the influence of which it was desired to observe, I have endeavored to avoid these sources of error as far as practicable. Dear Editor: It is with great pleasure that I read Mr. Howard M. Wells article in the December 1978 issue of MINING ENGINEERING entitled: "Optimization of Mining Engineering Design in Mineral Valuation." Mr. Wells very adequately presents the case and point that there are a great number of variables which must be analyzed during an economic evaluation of an FUND RESOURCE, such as copper or uranium. I wish to take this opportunity to suggest that, given today's economic climate, decision making takes place under conditions of uncertainty and that this uncertainty justifies our need to examine each one of the parameters entered into the evaluation model. It is my contention that the influence of the tonnages and grades as well as their distributions, have the most profound effect upon the results of an evaluation. Everyone concerned with the evaluation of FUND RESOURCES realizes that as metal prices decline or stagnate with sharply rising direct operating costs, cutoff grades (Gc) must increase according to the equation below which Mr. Wells uses: Gc = Total Operating Cost/(Market Price X 20 X Recovery) However, historically, we have seen cutoffs move dramatically lower in both the copper and uranium industries for the past decade. Henceforth, this established the metals industry most important argument for processing greater tonnages of lower grade materials from disseminated deposits (refer to paper by Kirkman, Roy C.). These disseminated deposits, created by either concentration processes (uranium) or dispersion processes (copper, gold, molybdenum), have log-normal grade distributions (Fig 1). Gross profits are rising, but unit profits are falling. The industry has created longevity through economy of scale, i.e., mining vast tonnages of low grade. In order to develop the great tonnages necessary to prove economic viability, we must examine alternatives at the low-end of the tonnage grade relationship. Notice from [Fig. 2] that as we move further to the right away from line A-B drawn tangential to the average grade curve at 45°, total profits will increase (given fixed annual production capacity) and unit profits decrease. The theoretical optimum operating point is where: [ ] At this point my observation is that slight shifts in production capacity bring about greater changes in profitability due to greater grade changes. Therefore, the best financial risk evaluation is obtained by totally revising the mining engineers methods and fixing the financial parameters such as discount and interest rates. A 10% shift in either of these two parameters will not cause near the same variance in economic viability as will a change on the GRADE-TONNAGE curve [(Fig. 2)].

THE first pump of this character, made by H. R. Worthington, and, so far as the writer is informed, the first and only one of this kind ever constructed, is now in daily use in the above-named works. The water-pressure necessary for the working of the hydraulic machinery of this plant had been supplied, up to the time of the building of this pump, by two Worthington Duplex High Pressure Pumps, having steam-cylinders of 20 inches diameter and 12-inch stroke, with water-plungers of 72 inches diameter; eight inlet and eight outlet valves of 22 inches diameter, and pumping into a 6-inch pipe. These pumps required a large amount of steam, and, in consequence of the various additions to their duty, their capacity became far short of the work required. In preference to putting in another engine of the same class, it was decided to accept Mr. Worthington's proposition to build the compound one under description, he guaranteeing that it should be equal to the demands of the works, and at the same time cause a saving of from 5 to 6 tons of coal per day from the amount required to run the two old pumps. The new engine has been in operation about one month, and so far has exceeded the most sanguine expectations. It consists of two high-pressure cylinders of 21 inches and two low-pressure ones of 36g inches diameter, by 36-inch stroke, with water-plungers of 91 inches diameter. There are two air-pumps of 20 inches diameter by 18-inch stroke; the condenser being 24 inches diameter by 60 inches high. Both cylinders are jacketed with wood and felt, and the low-pressure cylinder also with live steam. The high and low pressure steam-cylinders are in line and immediately adjoining each other, while the inconveniences attending an internal stuffing-box are avoided by having two piston-rods for each of the low-pressure cylinders, running through stuffing-boxes on the outside of the smaller high-pressure ones. IN order that you may be expert in every phase of this art of parting, I wish to caution you upon twelve points, all necessary, so that you may know beforehand what may happen to you and what provision you must make to obtain good results. Understand that the gain derived from this art lies in carrying out the work that you wish to do accurately and with profit, which means nothing other than working with certainty and seeing that there is no loss of gold or silver [69v] or substance of anything that is valuable in itself. For, since everything lost is silver or gold, it is valuable however little. it may be, and many little things obviously make one large one; for gain increases gain, and loss, loss. Therefore, you will have as your first task to seek to have the materials that you are to use for making the aqua fortis of as perfect a nature as possible. I tell you this because the saltpeter is often weaker and of worse quality than the alum. For this reason it is necessary to make an effort to have it not only well refined and free from earthiness but also of a nature as powerful as pig [dung] saltpeter, the color of which tends strongly toward yellow. In order to work better, you also refine this again before you put it to use, as I shall tell you in its place. Likewise, see if you can get alum of the red kind that comes from the Levant or from Cartagena, for it costs less and is more powerful. Furthermore; see that you have a good number of well-formed cucurbits of properly purified glass not too large and of, equal content and size. Above all, see that they contain, no indentations, bubbles, folds, or scratches, especially, in the, body or in the bottom, because they break easily and the nature and great force of the acid pierces them by eating away, and makes a little hole. For this reason, cucurbits. are always divided into four grades; one is taken for making aqua fortis, another for drying the waters when they are laden with silver, the third for recovering the acids from the separations, and the fourth are either rejected as useless or dangerous, or are saved for recovering the whites or for some other service. Whoever wishes to practice this art well should remember to keep a large supply of cucurbits, receivers, and alembics. The third is the precaution which one must take in luting them; first, to

TWENTY FIVE years of doing, finding, and encouraging others to do scientific research in' industry, and of organizing the machinery for the` smooth 'and effective conduct of such research, have left me with a feeling that so far as this branch of human activity is concerned the problems in 'essence are- not, materially 'different from those met elsewhere. Years ago, in a less mature period of life, I may have thought that the effective industrial research man was a being somewhat different from his fellow workers in adjacent 'fields, but I have long since 'changed my views. The rank and' file of the modern industrial research organization are relatively easy to find, though some¬times difficult to get in sufficient numbers. Mistakes in choosing them are not particularly serious to the or¬ganization, however unfortunate they may be for the misplaced individual who persists too long in the wrong environment. The reason for this is obvious from the fact that, taken by and large, the work of the rank and file is at best necessarily a work of detail done under guidance of the more experienced. In this respect the situation of the rank and file in an industrial research organization is not different from that class in any other group activity, whether concerned with industry, the university, or the church. This does not mean, however, that we are not all anxious to have the best possible material obtainable in the rank and file, or that we are indifferent to the utmost of encouragement and stimulation to its individual members.

(communication to the Secretary*):—In operatioils requiring the expenditure of fuel, it is solely a question of supplying a certain number of heat-units at certain temperature-conditions. The difficulty of controlling these temperature-conditions is mainly responsible for low efficiency, unless utilizable waste heat is carefully applied either for the pre-heating of the air necessary for combustion, or for the heating of the raw materials, or in other departments of the works to generate steam, etc. A high theoretical or thermal efficiency very often does not establish a high " commercial" efficieiicy, and this fact is responsible for apparent crude practice in many arts. Coal is still very cheap in the East, and oil sells in the West for less than anywhere else in the world. Despite these favorable conditions, I believe that the list of references given in E. C. Eckel's book,' and also the contributions of C. Naske,2 will show that Mr. Eldred's statement, that a the study of the phenomena of applied combustion has been neglected," is not justified as far as the burning of cement is concerned. I have investigated the heat-balance of a lirne-kiln ailci the commercial advantage of using generator-gas for calcination. Mr. Eldred proposes to calcine the materials in the present type of rotary kiln, gas-fired with long-flame combustion, and to Pdke the fritted calcines to a special, gas-fired clinkering-kiln, which shall embody heat-regenerators. The lattice parameter of the inlerrnetallic compound Nb3Sn has been measured as a function of temperature from 80° to 1290°K. The results are compared with published data on the thermal ex- ThE recent interest in the intermetallic compound, Nb3Sn, as an engineering material for the production of superconducting devices has necessitated that certain engineering data be obtained. Because of the difficulty encountered in producing bulk pansion of niobium and indicate that the compound when made by diffusion of tin into niobium at 1000°C, would be subjected to a tensile strain of about 0.1 pct when cooled to room temperature. material which is single phase, the coefficient of thermal expansion has not been measured by dilata-tional methods. Therefore the lattice parameters of fine-grained samples of Nb3Sn produced on the surface of a niobium sheet by heating in molten tin at 950°C have been obtained as a function of temperature. The results are compared with published data on niobium2 and Nb3Sn3 and with lattice-parameter measurements made on small single crystals of Nb3Sn.
