Much has been said about digital computer control of metal and mineral ore dressing processes, but little has been done. This pa- per discusses what practical use can be made today of a digital computer in an ore concentrator and how such application can be made successfully. A hypothetical, but commercially common, grinding and flotation circuit is presented in terms of analog measurements which can and are being made in existing plants and a centralized computer control system which is reasonable in terms of today's technology. Dangers and possible disadvantages of such an approach are discussed as well as estimated benefits. Possible future benefits are presented in terms of improved control technology. Development of new measuring devices is not considered as a criterion for computer benefits. The control systems described have been utilized successfully in existing ore dressing operations. However, the degree of success or failure of analog systems is generally left to the interpretation of management rather than absolute analysis. Many factors affect the economic operation of a mineral recovery circuit such as size of facility, flow sheet design, number of operating personnel, percent of recoverable mineral in the ore body, loss to tails, and haulage rates. In existing mills where little or no instrumentation has been used, it is extremely difficult to prove or disprove the advantage of analog control systems on one mill line versus its sisters due to the lack of standards and the lack of ability to separate final products by ton.

TWENTY-ONE of the states in the Union, the Territory of Hawaii, and seven provinces of Canada now have in operation laws requiring that professional engineers be registered or licensed. In addition, two states require that civil engineers be registered, and one other state demands registration of structural engineers. Moreover, nearly every year sees additions made to the list. The registration movement, fostered by the American Association of Engineers, now has the powerful, energetic backing of the An1,erican Society of Civil Engineers, which is itself now fostering registration legislation, and there is a strong sentiment in favor of registration in the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Only in the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is anti-registration sentiment, strongly dominant, but many members of this organization are enthusiastic advocates of registration.

Stanford University operates the National Research Facility which is located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in Menlo Park, California. In order to improve and allow for enhanced experiments, the current facilities required expansion. A1500 foot long tunnel (20 ft wide by 21 ft high) and a 220 foot long underground cavern (49 ft wide by 32 ft high) were excavated through the Ladera Sandstone formation which is an intermediate geo-material with week rock properties. The overburden between surface and crown of the structures varies from 10 to 80 feet. The underground structures were excavated according to the principles of the NATM (New Austrian Tunnel Method). This paper addresses the challenges that were encountered during the construction phase of the project and how construction issues were resolved mutually by the owner, engineer and contractor. The implementation of geotechnical instrumentation, recorded data and interpretations, soil conditions and behavior encountered during construction are also presented.

Research performed on arcing faults and their interaction; with electrical insulating materials within coal.-mine power-system enclosures is described. This work was performed at The Pennsylvania State University from 1 December, 1976 through 30. November, 1977. Results presented are interim in nature and future research is planned to integrate the simulations which have been constructed, as well as to apply developed experimental procedures to the evaluation of electrical insulating materials for use in coal-mine enclosures. The thrust of this research has been divided into several primary areas. These include the development of a theoretical procedure for computation of three-phase and line-to-line arcing fault currents as a function of time, formulation of an arc model based upon thermal-arc plasma properties so that arc voltages and energies may be computed, development of a simulation for pressure and temperature rises when an arc interacts with an electrical insulating material within an enclosure, experimental evaluation of electrical insulating materials in terms of their tendency to support an arc as well as their potential contribution to enclosure pressure rises, and integration of the above research areas to form overall procedures for theoretical and experimental evaluation.

The surficial collapse pits of the mining areas are continuously spreading in Beiminghe iron mine of Hebei Province as a result of the exploitation, which has done a lot of damage to the circumjacent ecological environment of the mine. It is a new path to handle the mine tailings at the present time that the thickened tailings are used to backfill the collapse pits, in which way the problems of the surficial collapse and the nowhere discharge of the tailings are both solved, and the rational utilization of the mine tailings and the clean production of the mine enterprise are realized. The?200 mesh content of the tailings of Beiminghe iron mine is 76.87%, and?325 mesh content is 63.50%. Semi-industrial dehydration experiments to the tailings have been done using the hydro-cyclone classified thickening process. The results show that when FX125 hydrocyclone is adopted, the concentration of underflow can achieve 73.31%, and the yield ratio is 61.78%; when FX150 hydrocyclone is adopted, the concentration of underflow is 70.57%, and the yield ratio is 54.31%, which indicate that the minor diameter hydrocyclone is propitious to improve the yield ratio of the underflow. The semi-industrial dehydration system of hydrocyclone classified thickening process is com-posed of FX125 hydrocyclone, D3600 high-efficient thickener and D2000 thickening bucket. The capacity to tailings disposal can achieve 3.07t/h and the tailings can be thickened from 28.86% to 62.45%. Compared with the traditional thickening-filtrating process and the total tailings directly filtrating process, the hydrocyclone classified thickening process has the merits of simple flow and high thickening efficiency, so it is easy to be realized in the mine.

Every paste backfill system is typically unique, this being due to the particular tailings characteristics, the backfill recipe and requirements of mine planning. Key to successful transport to the underground workings through the boreholes and the distribution pipelines is the quality of cemented paste, being free of lumps and recipe components uniformly mixed. Certain types of mixer require that the mixing environment is required to be intensive as possible. In this sense, the present paper point out some of the general aspects of paste plant design, a short discussion on paste recipe and process equipment, followed by a technical comparison between a batch mixing and a continuous mixing process, currently applied to the production of cemented paste tailings for mine backfill.

Two series of 17pct Cr iron-base alloys with small, controlled amounts of carbon and nitrogen were vacuum-melted in an effort to detertmine the meclz-uniswls of inter granulur corrosion in ferritic stain-less steels. An alloy containing 0.0095 pct N aid 0.002 pct C was very resistant to intergranular corrosion, even after sensitizing heat treatments at 1700" to 2100o F. However, alloys containing more than 0.022 pct Ni and more than 0.012 pct C were quite susceptible to intergranular corrosion after sensitizing heat treatments at temperatures higher than 1700°F. This corrosion was observed after the usual exposure tests and after potentiostatic polarization tests. Electronmicroscopic examination of the alloys susceptible to intergranular corvosion revealed a small grain boundary precipitate; this precipitate was absent in the alloys not susceptible to such corrosion. Thc electronmicrographs indicate that intergranu1ar corrosion of ferritic stainless steels is caused by the depletion of chromium in areas adjacent to precipi-tates of chromium carbide or chromium nitride. It also seems likely that the precipitates themselves are attacked at highly oxidizing potentials. Confirma-tion of the proposed mechanisms was obtained in tests on air-melted ferritic stainless steels containing titanium. The titanium additions greatly reduced susceptibility to intergranular corrosion at moderately oxidizing potentials but had no beneficial effect at highly oxidizing potentials. A major obstacle to the use of ferritic stainless steel has been their susceptibility to intergranular corrosion after welding or improper heat treatment. It appears that sensitization of ferritic stainless steel occurs under a wider range of conditions than for austenitic steels. In addition, a greater number of environments lead to damaging intergranular corrosion of sensitized ferritic stainless steels than to sensitized austenitic steels. The chromium depletion theory of intergranular corrosion is widely accepted for austenitic stainless steels'" although there: are some objections.3 On the other hand, several alternative mechanisms proposed for ferritic stainless steels include precipitation of easily corroded iron carbides at grain boundaries,' grain boundary precipitates that strain the metal lat-tice,5 and the formation of austenite at the grain bound-arie.6 The application of the chromium depletion theory to ferritic stainless steels has been discussed extensively by Baumel.7 The present investigation was undertaken to determine which of the proposed mechanisms can be sub- A PAUL BOND IS Research Group Leader, Climax Molybdenum Co of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich. stantiated with experimental data obtained on ferritic stainless steels. High-purity 17 pct Cr alloys containing small controlled additions of carbon or nitrogen were therefore prepared, and then examined electro-chemically and metallographically. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials. Two series of experimental alloys were prepared from electrolytic iron and low-carbon ferro-chromium using the split-heat technique. In this technique, the base composition is melted, and part of the melt is poured off to produce an ingot. To the balance of the melt, the required addition is made and the next ingot cast. This process is repeated until a series of the desired compositions is cast. By this procedure the impurity levels are essentially constant within each series. All the alloys in the carbon-containing series were melted and cast in vacuum. The base composition in the nitrogen series was melted and cast in vacuum; subsequent ingots in the series were melted with additions of high-nitrogen ferrochromium, and cast under argon at a pressure of 0.5 atmosphere. Two additional alloys were produced starting with normal purity materials. They were induction-melted while protected by an argon blanket and cast in air. Table I gives the composition of the alloys. The 2-in.-diam ingots produced were hot-forged and hot-rolled to a thickness of 0.3 in. and then cold-rolled to 0.15 in. All specimens were annealed at 1450°F for 1 hr. The indicated sensitizing heat treat-s s ments were performed on annealed material. All heat treatments were followed by a water quench. Specimen Preparation. For the 65 pct nitric acid test, 1 by 2 by 0.14-in. specimens were wet-surface ground to remove surface irregularities and polished through 3/0 dry metallographic paper. The zeta potential on the surface of activated orit carbon were estimated in lhe presence of selected cations and anions that are normally associated with gold bearing ores in Kalgoorlie area of Western Australia. Additions of such ions to solution of varying pH shifted the isoelectric point of carbon from pH 4.45 to pH 7-8.3, while the anions moved Lhc isoelectric point 10 less than pH 3.2. In the presence of gold cyanide SoluLion additions of spectator ions indicated the isoelecLric poilll to be aL pH less than 3.2; the only exception was for Fe" ion where the isoelecLric point was at pH 5.9. The decrease in zeta potential appeared to be related to the counter-ions present. The decrease may also be related to the adsorption of hydroxyl ion complexes that are likely to be formed when cations are present in the solutions.Gold adsorpLion by activated orit carbon from gold cyanide solution seem to be indicated by the magnitude of zeta potential on the carbon surface. An attempt is made to relate gold adsorption and zeta potential on carbon surface with the pH of the medium.

SMITH*-Mr. Rockwood has presented a very interesting paper on problems of the mineral aggregate industry in meeting specification requirements, which apparently are ever decreasing in tolerance. May I call attention to a method of mineral separation that may be of value in separating the flat aggregate particles from the more angular ones and possibly the soft particles from the hard. The method is the old Pardee spiral coal separator, extensively used many years ago in the anthracite region for separating rock and bone from anthracite coal.1 The success of the process depends on the relative coefficient of friction of the aggregate particles to be separated rather than on their relative specific gravity. The flat and the soft particles normally will slide more slowly and stay on the inner spiral until they reach the delivery spout at the bottom whereas the round and the angular pieces will work to the outer edge and fall off into a spiral of larger diameter. The capacity of the separator is increased materially by having three inner spirals, with a separate feed for each, on which the particles travel more slowly, and one outer spiral from which the more rapidly traveling pieces slide to the bottom. IRVING WARNER*-I have long been convinced that much of the equipment and methods developed for mineral dressing might be advantageously employed in the mineral aggregates industry, and more particularly in the production of sand and gravel. The two industries are not well acquainted with each other or their problems. They have separate trade publications. The difficulty with the situation is that there are few large sand and gravel plants and few provided with technical services in their own organization or by retainer. This does not refer to engineering organizations but rather to improvement of plant technic in processing.

Video technology coupled with data logging exposure monitors have been used to evaluate worker exposure to different types of contaminants. However, previous application of this technology used a stationary video camera to record the worker?s activity while the worker wore some type of contaminant monitor. These techniques are not applicable to mobile workers in the mining industry because of their need to move around the operation while performing their duties and tasks. The Helmet-CAM is a recently developed exposure assessment tool that integrates a person-wearable video recorder with a data logging dust monitor that are worn by a miner in a backpack, safety belt, or safety vest to identify areas or job tasks of elevated exposure. After a miner performs his or her job while wearing the unit, the video and dust exposure data files are downloaded to a computer and then merged together through a NIOSH-developed computer software program called EVADE (Enhanced Video Analysis of Dust Exposure). By providing synchronized playback of the merged video footage and dust exposure data, the EVADE software allows for the assessment and identification of key work areas and processes, as well as work tasks that significantly impact a worker?s personal respirable dust exposure. The Helmet-CAM technology has been tested at a number of metal/nonmetal mining operations and has proven to be a very valuable assessment tool. Mining companies wishing to use this technique can purchase a commercially available video camera and an instantaneous dust monitor to obtain the necessary data, and the NIOSH-developed EVADE software will be available for download at no cost on the NIOSH website.

Kenny/Shea JV is constructing the water intake tunnel for the new Elm Road Generating Station, a supercritical coal-fired power plant in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, being built by Bechtel Power Corporation. The intake tunnel system consists of a temporary mining shaft, pump house and intake channel riser shafts, and four lakebed intake shafts. An 8.33 m diameter, 2,800 m long TBM mined rock tunnel is being constructed to connect the shafts. The intakes are located 2.4 kilometers offshore in Lake Michigan. The shafts and tunnel are being constructed in glacial tills and Silurian Dolomite. The estimated tunnel completion is December 2007.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, investigated methods of recovering potash values from process and waste brines. Laboratory pan evaporation of four chloride brines produced crude salts containing predominantly sylvite, halite and carnallite. Six sulfate- chloride brines produced crude salts containing primarily schoenite, kainite, leonite, sylvite, carnallite, and halite. Potash grades ranged from 7.2% to 22.2% K20, and recoveries by crystallization ranged from 85% to 99%. Sylvite flotation from chloride evaporites with amine collector, recovered 90% to 97% of the potash in a concentrate containing 54.3% to 60.3% K20. Fatty acid flotation of the high sulfate evaporite recovered 78% of the sulfate minerals in a 28%-K20 concentrate. Flotation of the remaining chloride minerals with amine collector recovered 80% of the potash in a 59.7%-K20 concentrate. Solar evaporation of 37 854 L (10,000 gal.) of brine recovered 99% of the potash in a crude evaporite containing 24.5% schoenite and 20% sylvite. Flotation in a 45-kglh (100-lblh) continuous flotation unit recovered over 95% of the potash in schoenite and sylvite concentrates, containing 28% and 62.3% K20, respectively. An economic evaluation is included.

The solidifzcation reactions in the Cu-Sn-As system were determined by microscopic examination, thermal analysis, and X-ray diffraction. The system presents no ternary compound. There is a quasi-binary section, of a simple eutectic type, between the compounds Cu5As2 and SnAs; the system presents, in addition, one ternary eutectic reaction, one ternary peritectic reaction, and seven transitional reactions. The temp-peratures corresponding to each of these reactions were determined, most of them with an accuracy of *lLC. The isothermal lines of the liquidus surface were also established for almost the entire diagram. NO reference was found in the literature relative to the Cu-Sn-As phase diagram and this is believed to be the first study on this subject. The Cu-Sn diagram was taken from Hansen and Anderko;' it is represented by Fig. 1, with the phase designation which will be used in the remainder of this work. For the Cu-As diagram, the solution proposed by Hansen and ~nderko' must be modified to take account of recent data, principally from Heyding and Despault~ and from Hume-Rothery and Burns; this yields the diagram represented by Fig. 2. As for the Sn-As diagram, it is not established with certainty, particularly so far as concerns the solid solubility of tin in arsenic and the solidification reactions near the compound SnsAsz. For this last point, Hansen and Anderko propose two solutions: congruent melting of Sn3Asz with a eutectic SnsAsZ + SnAs or incongruent melting implying a peri-tectic reaction L + SnAs = Sn3As2. Microscopic examination of the few binary alloys prepared in this composition range made us prefer the second of these solutions, which gives the diagram shown by Fig. 3. ON JULY 12, 1921, S. S. Arentz, representative at large from Nevada, introduced in the House of Representatives, under the number H. R. 7736, a bill to revise, amend and codify laws of the United States relating to the location of mining claims on public domain, and other purposes. This bill had been drafted by a committee of consulting engineers of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The immediate purpose of this introduction in Congress was to make it avail- able for general information and discussion. In pursuance of this purpose Mr. Arentz issued the following circular: This proposed codification and revision of the mining laws of the United States as received from a committee of mining and metallurgical engineers appointed by the Director of the United States Bureau of Mines was introduced in the House of Representatives by the undersigned (who has operated and developed mines throughout the West for many years). It is submitted to prospectors, mine operators and mining engineers, all of whom are affected and vitally interested in the subject with the hope that they will give this bill their careful consideration and study.

Whilst a significant body of research has been carried into air overpressure levels that arise as a result of the use of explosives, few published studies have actually tried to relate the movement of a quarry face to the resulting air overpressure produced. The aim of this preliminary investigation was to monitor a number of quarry blasts at two different limestone quarries. The first using multiple separately initiated deck charges in a multi borehole blast, the second using single column charges in a multi borehole blast.

The Goodall gold mine is located 30 km east of Adelaide River, within the Pine Creek 1:250 000 map sheet, at 8 525 000 mN: 750 000 mE, on the AMG grid. The first gold was poured in April 1988 and the mine closed in September 1993, having produced 228 400 ounces of gold from 4.095 million tons of ore, at a head grade of 1.99 g/t. Oxide and primary ore was mined from one large open cut and low grade oxide ore from three smaller pits. The gold mineralisation was discovered in 1981 by means of a helicopter borne rock chip sampling survey, which delineated 13 discrete anomalies. Systematic grid sampling of rock chips outlined an area of 1300 m by 300 m within the 2.0 g/t contour. Over 7500 m of costeaning was used to delineate the A and B-Pod mineralised areas. Geochemical soil sampling played only a minor role in the discovery and geophysics none at all. By the end of 1984, 40 diamond drill holes had been completed and a resource of 3.63 million tonnes at 3.0 g/t calculated. In January 1985, Western Mining Corporation Ltd became a joint venture partner and funded exploration to cam a 60 per cent interest. Additional drilling led to a feasibility study in 1987, based on a Measured and Indicated resource of 4.25 million tonnes at a grade of 2.35 g/t. The host rocks are quartzo-feldspathic wacke and interbedded phyllitic siltstone, of the Proterozoic Burrell Creek formation. The main zone of gold mineralisation, A-Pod, occurs in a sub-vertical vein array, up to 50 m wide and 800 m in length, of quartz and sulphide veins (5-20 mm wide), It is parallel to and on the east limb of an upright, north plunging anticline. Five types of veining have been recognised, with the bulk of the gold mineralisation associated with quartz-pyrite-arsenopyrite and chlorite-quartz-pyrite veins. The gold occurs as particles, from 1-20 micron, as inclusions and along fractures in pyrite and arsenopyrite and to a limited extent in chlorite. The mineralisation is epigenetic and structurally controlled by fractures developed during an earlier folding event. The gold is assumed to have been derived from the underlying sediments of the Koolpin Formation by hydrothermal fluids emanating from the deep seated northern margin of the Cullen Batholith. Precipitation of gold may have been controlled by variations in temperature and pressure.
