THE Fletcherville Furnace was built in 1864 and 1865, making its first blast from August until October of the latter year, when it was blown out to prevent its "bunging-up." Repairs were made in time to enable it to be blown in again December 12th, 1865, the blast ending October 7th, 1866. Total product 1921.15 tons iron, an average of 6.8.2.5 tons per day, from ores yielding 44.8 per cent. Consumption of charcoal 223.2 bushels per ton of iron. The furnace journal up to this time shows no record of furnace dimen¬sions, or temperature of the blast, but as near as can be ascertained, they were as follows, viz. Height of stack, 42 feet. Diameter of bosh, 11 feet. Angle of bosh, 7 1/2 inches to 12 inches rise, about 58°. Diameter of open tunnel head, 42 inches. Number of tuyeres 3; each 3 inches in diameter. Dam 15 inches high. Tuyeres 24 inches high. Tymp 22 1/2 inches high. Diameter of steam cylinder, 20 1/4 inches. Stroke 5 feet. Diameter of blast cylinder, 64 inches. The engine is direct-acting horizontal non-condensing. December 26th, 1.866, the furnace was again put in blast, having been considerably altered in the crucible; the height of stack, bosh, and tunnel head remaining as before. Six tuyeres were put in, three in each of the side arches. The hearth or crucible was rectangular in form, 3 feet wide x 32 feet long x 62 feet high. Inclination of bosh 58°. Height of tuyeres 26 inches ; nozzles 2 1/4 inches diameter. Temperature of blast estimated to be about 500°.

A transmission electron microscope study was made of magnesium single crystals deformed in torsion using the basal pole as the forsional axis. While this type of deformation is predicted to result in the formation of hexagonal networks of screw dislocations, these networks were not observed. The basic dislocation arrangement consisted of arrays of nearly parallel and approximately equally spaced dislocations. The average dislocation density was over an order of magnitude higher than that required to account for the torsional deformation. The observed high rate of work hardening in these crystals is consistent with both their high dislocation densities and the arrangement of dislocations in pile-ups. The experimental observations are also in agreement with the assumption that dislocation sources are activated not only at the surface but at interior locations as well. In considering torsional deformation, Amelinckx and Dekeyser1 postulated that when a torque is applied to a crystal oriented with a glide plane normal to the specimen axis, deformation occurs by the following steps: 1) Nucleation of dislocation sources at or near the specimen surface in areas where the shear stress, resolved along a slip Burgers vector, is a maximum; 2) the screw orientations of the dislocations accommodating the twist move inwards towards the specimen center. If two glide directions lie on the glide plane, the geometry shown in Fig. 1 should result; 3) the screw dislocations that pile up in the central part of the specimen cross-slip to form a grid. At the same time, screws of opposite sign and most edges leave the specimen. Tinder,2 using zinc crystals twisted about the basal pole, independently reached essentially the same conclusions. He suggested a mechanism involving nucleation of ?(1120) screw dislocations at the six points of highest resolved shear stress that lie on the cross-section near the surface. Under the applied shear stress these dislocations were assumed to move inward and interact so as to form a hexagonal network of screw dislocations. Today it is often accepted that rotational slip occurs by a mechanism of the above type, but to our understanding this has never been experimentally proved. This paper reports an experimental study of rotational slip, using magnesium single crystals, that indicates that in this metal rotational slip does not conform well to this mechanism. THE rapidly increasing use of machinery for the mining of coal and operations incidental thereto has materially changed conditions from a safety standpoint. A few of the coal-producing states have recognized the need for specialized electrical equipment for use in mines and have introduced certain requirements in their State safety regulations, notably Pennsylvania. This paper discusses the principal problems involved in maintenance of such equipment. PERMISSIBLE: EQUIPMENT "Permissible" electrical equipment is equipment that has met certain prescribed standards for use in mines where hazardous conditions may occur and has been recommended by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Such machinery is available on the market for most coal-mining operations--for instance, coal cutting, transportation, drilling, loading, working-place illumination, shot-firing and pumping. A notable exception is the trolley-reel gathering locomotive which, although its parts may be explosion-tested by the Bureau, has not been approved as permissible for the following reasons: I. The trailing cable is subjected to more severe service than on other equipment. 2. State regulations do not require that a working place be examined for methane before a locomotive enters it. 3. Even with two-conductor cable, imperfect or inadequate bonding may cause the emission of sparks at the wheels of the locomotive and at rail joints. 4. As the locomotive is equipped with a trolley pole, and as the trolley wire may be installed and used in unsafe territory in spite of rigid State regulations, a trolley-reel gathering locomotive is always a potential hazard. MAINTENANCE The proper procedure for maintenance of permissible equipment may be divided into three parts: (I) inspection, (2) actual maintenance and (3) changes or improvements to existing machines. To secure the fullest benefits through the use of permissible equipment it is necessary that all men involved understand the principles underlying the safety features of this equipment and realize the significance of defects, so that neglect and indifference in the maintenance thereof may be eliminated. Inspection From the standpoint of safety it is desirable no doubt to make a suitable inspection of permissible electrical equipment once a week, but the opening of every enclosed compartment at each inspection may do more harm than good. The openings to such compartments are closed with various types of covers very accurately machined, often made of the softer alloys to reduce weight, and fastened with a multitude of bolts, screws, washers, and other small parts. Frequent handling of these covers may cause sufficient damage to defeat their original purpose and intent.

Solid-solution titanium-cerium alloys, cold-rolled to 0.010 in. thickness, and annealed, were internally oxidized to produce a fine dispersion of CeO2 in the titanium matrix. The oxidized alloys were cut into sheet stress-rupture specimens and tested for rupture life at 426°C, 538°C, and 648°C. There was noted an improvement in strength over that of pure titanium, the internally-oxidized alloys showing curves with a much flatter slope on the log stress—log rupture life plot, characteristic of the stable metal-metal oxide class of alloy. DURING the past 3 to 4-year period, considerable interest has been aroused by the potential offered by alloys based on the ultra fine dispersion of a hard insoluble phase in pure metals or solid-solution alloys for use at high temperatures. The impetus to the development and study of such alloys was provided by Irmann.1,2 through the success of the SAP alloy (pure aluminum containing about 12-14 volume pct of A12O3). Subsequent studies have thrown light on the true potential of this class of alloys in the remarkable stability of the structure after long-time exposure at high stresses and high temperatures.a-5 While success has been demonstrated in the special case of the A1-Al2O3 alloys, and more recently

Several experiments have been performed in order to illustrate the application of a recently developed X-ray image intensifier system to metallurgical investigations. In the present work the system has been used to study the instantaneous alterations in Laue transmission X-ray diffraction patterns during tensile deformation of aluminum single crystals. Expem'mental results are presented which demonstrate the capability of the system for crystal orientation, for following orientation changes due to lattice rotation during tensile deformation, and for showing changes in the homogeneity of the lattice planes along the specimen length as a function of strain rate. RECENTLY, a new X-ray system has been developed which incorporates a cascaded image intensifier and permits direct viewing and recording of X-ray diffraction patterns produced on a fluorescent screen.1"3 In the present work the results of several experiments are presented which demonstrate the usefulness of this system for metallurgical applications. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A schematic diagram of the experimental arrangement is shown in Fig. 1. In this system a Machlett AEG-50-S tungsten target X-ray tube, normally operated at 50 kv and 40 ma, serves as the X-ray source. The X-ray tube is placed in direct contact with a 10-in.-long collimator, which transforms the X-ray beam from one with a circular cross section to one with a rectangular cross section 3 in. high and 1/6in. wide. By blocking off all but a small portion of the rectangular slit, it is possible to work with the more conventional "pinhole" collimated X-ray beam commonly used for obtaining Laue diffraction patterns. In the present work the test specimens were 99.99+ pct aluminum single crystal wires & in. in diam and 3 in. long. For the deformation tests the wire crystals were mounted in a special set of grips in a table model Instron machine so that diffraction patterns could be recorded during specimen deformation. For the orientation tests the wire crystals were mounted in a rotating goniometer so that diffraction patterns could be recorded during specimen rotation. At a distance of 3 cm from the specimen axis, a 6 in. diam DuPont CB-2 fluorescent screen is positioned to transform the X-ray image to a visible one. A Super Farron f/0.87 72 mm coupling lens, corrected for 4 to 1 demagnification, transmits the visible image to the image tube. The image intensifier used is a three-stage magnetically focused RCA type C70021A with an S-20 input photocathode and a P-20 output phosphor. The tube has unity magnification and useful input and output screen diameters of 1.5 in. The image on the output phosphor is of sufficient intensity to be viewed directly, to be recorded cine-matographically, or to be displayed by vidicon pick-up on a television monitor. The recording device most commonly used is a 16 mm Bolex motion picture camera fitted with a Canon f/0.95, 50 mm lens. The overall gain of the system is 16,000 for direct viewing and 2240 for recording on 16 mm movie film. The resolution of the system is limited to 1 line pair per mm which is approximately that of the fluorescent screen. This system has been used for cine recording of transmission Laue X-ray diffraction patterns with exposure times as short as 1/220 sec and for vidicon television pick-up and display at a scan time of 1/30 sec. Quantitative information may be obtained from each frame of the movie film, by either stopping the vertical slit down to a point source in order to obtain a conventional Laue photograph or else by retaining the linear beam and introducing fiducial marks as described in a previous paper.4 In either case, each frame may be enlarged to appropriate size for analysis by either using a photographic enlarger and making prints of the desired frames, or, more conveniently, by using a microfilm reader. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The first series of photographs which are presented in Fig. 2 serves to demonstrate the usefulness of the system for crystallographic orientation determination. This series of prints, made from enlargements of a 16 mm movie film, shows the dynamic Laue transmission patterns produced by an aluminum single crystal wire which was rotating about the wire axis when the patterns were recorded. The movie films were taken at 16 frames per sec and the crystal was rotated at a rate of 15 rpm.

A detailed investigation was made of the phase diagram of silver-zirconium, particularly in the region 0 to 36 at. pct Ag. The system was found to be characterized by two intermediate phases Zr2Ag and ZrAg and a eutectoid reaction in which the -zirconium solid solution decomposes into a-zirconium and Zr2Ag. It was found that impurities in the range 0.05 pct from the iodide-type zirconium were sufficient to introduce deviations from binary behavior, and that with partial removal of these impurities an increase in the a-phase solid solubility limit from 0.1 to 1.1 at. pct Ag was observed. The phase diagram of the silver-zirconium system is of interest as an example of alloying a transition metal from the left side of the Periodic Table with a Group IB element. Silver would normally act as a univalent metal, its filled 4d-shell remaining undisturbed during the alloying. However, there is a possibility that some of the 4d electrons might transfer to the zirconium. An insight into such a question can occasionally be obtained by comparison of phase diagrams. The silver-zirconium system forms part of a more complete review of various solutes in zirconium in which these valency effects were studied.' Earlier work on the silver-zirconium system was done by Raub and Enge1,2 who investigated the silver-rich alloys. After the start of the present experhents, work on this system was reported by Kemper3 and by Karlsson4 which for the most part agrees with the phase diagram presented here. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys were prepared by arc casting on a water-cooled, copper hearth with a tungsten electrode and in a pure argon atmosphere. Uniform solute composition was attained by multiple melting on alternate sides of the same ingot. Progressive improvements in the vacuum conditions inside the apparatus during the course of the experiments reduced the Vickers hardness increase of the pure zirconium control ingot from 10 to 20 points, observed initially, to negligible amounts at the end of the experiments. Such hardness changes in zirconium are a well known indication of purity. For example, -01 wt pct additions of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon increase hardness by 6, 10, and 3 VPN respectively. '9' Further verification that the final casting technique did not add a significant quantity of impurities was obtained when pure zirconium was arc cast and then isothermally annealed in the vicinity of the allotropic transition. The transition was always observed to take place over the same temperature range as in the original crystal bar. The alloy ingots were annealed in sealed silica capsules for times and temperatures which varied between 1 day at 1300°C and 60 days at 700°C. The best method found to prevent the reaction of the zirconium with the silica was foil wrapping of molybdenum or tantalum. With this method, samples of pure zirconium were found to be unchanged in hardness after annealing for 3 days at 1200°C. In most of the experiments the protection of these foils was supplemented by an additional layer of zirconium foil inside the molybdenum or tantalum foil. The alloys, foil, and the capsule were outgassed at pressures in the range 10 to l0-7mm Hg in the temperature range 800" to 1100°C before each anneal in order to remove hydrogen and other impurities, and to provide a suitable container for the high purity, inert atmosphere, which is essential in the annealing of zirconium. The temperature measurements were made with Pt/Pt + 10 pct Rh thermocouples calibrated frequently during the experiments against the melting points of zinc, aluminum, silver, gold, and palladium. For the longer anneals the sum of various temperature errors was generally well within ± 2°C. For short-time anneals and during thermal analysis the overall temperature error is considered to be within ± 0.5°C. The compositions of the alloys from the quenching experiments were determined by chemical analysis at Johnson Matthey and Company, Ltd., under the direction of Mr. F. M. Lever. The actual metallo-graphic samples were individually analyzed in every case, and prior to the analyses two or more sides of each specimen were examined to insure that the specimen was not segregated. The sum of the solute and solvent analyses was in each case within the range 99.9 to 100.1 pct. In the course of the experiments, minor impurities in the range 0 to 500 ppm were found to have significant effects on the zirconium-rich portion of the phase diagram. THE demand for clean steel is increasing daily. New processes of refining steel are being developed in order to remove all nonmetallic inclusions as completely as possible, as it is the general opinion that. inclusions affect the dynamic properties of steel and iron to such an extent as to justify great expense for their removal. It is surprising to note at the same time the commercial development of a new process for making artificial wrought iron. By this process slag and steel are thoroughly mixed, the amount of nonmetallic inclusions usually exceeding 2 per cent in weight. The contradiction in these two efforts is obvious and is responsible for the investigation reported in this paper. H. W. Gillett also has recently emphasized the need for further research on wrought iron.1

IN a paper on the mechanical behavior of heat-treated steel, N. H. Polakowski' put forward arguments to the effect that the stored energy resulting from the deformation of metals should be reduced during the inital stages of subsequent deformation carried out under conditions which produce work softening. At the time (1957) the only energy measurements available as indirect evidence on this point were the results of M. M. Degtyarev,2 some of which Polakowski reproduced in his Fig. 6, and which are again reproduced here in Fig. 1. The solid lines in the upper part of Fig. 1 are Degtyarev's, the dashed Lines Polakowski's prediction of the true trend of the stored energy in copper samples pre-strained in tension and then given various amounts of subsequent compression. The accuracy of this prediction has been borne out by some experiments carried out on American Smelting and Refining Co. copper (99.999' percent Cu) by the present authors. Bars of this copper about 0.4 in. in diam and 12 in. long were prepared by vacuum melting and casting, followed by cold forging and swaging in several stages of about 40 pct reduction in area with intermediate recrystallization anneals. After the final anneal one bar was deformed in tension to 30 pct elongation; the gage length was then cut into several samples which were given axial compressions of various amounts. The hardness of

I have read with particular interest that portion of the discussion by Anton Eilers referring to the high-lime (and also high-alumina) slags made by August Raht in 1881, while smelting the Horn Silver ores at Franklin, Utah. AGGLOMERATION U.S. 4,067,727 - In the sintering of a charge of iron oxide ore, a fuel and a flux on a travelling grate machine, the dust problem is minimized by providing a plurality of cooling zones and by directing heated dust-laden air from a first cooling zone to the sintering zone wherein the dust is filtered from the air by the material being sintered. Air from a further cooling zone can be exhausted directly to the atmosphere. Dust removal in the cooling zone is improved by using a purging zone in which higher pressure air agitates the dust in the sintered material. Writing the Technical Report, third edition, by J. Raleigh Nelson. McGraw-Hill Book Co. $4.50, 356 pp., 1952.-The aim of the book is to inspire a greater interest in report writing. Basis for the increased interest is a development of a keener understanding of the writer's own mental processes and the practical procedures involved in writing a report. The book is concerned with basic principles and procedures, rather than incidentals. It emphasizes the importance of correct attitudes and suggests a method of approach and organization. In the first part of the book, design and composition are considered. Next, the text gives directions for setting up both the long and short term report. The third part of, the book gives a systematic procecure for critical examination of the report. The fourth section presents a 16 week course in report writing. The Rocks of the Sekondi Series of the Gold Coast, by A T. Crow. Gold Coast Geological Survey. 7s. 6d, 73 pp., 1952.-The book describes the results of careful and detailed mapping of the Sekondi Series. The Sekondi-Takoradi area is undergoing intensive development, including extensions to Takoradi Harbor and to the railways. Details are given on the nature, extent, and structure of the Series and many faults which cut into them. The book is aimed at those with a practical interest in the area. It is illustrated with geological maps and drawings of horizontal sections. In the back, the terrain of the series is illustrated in a group of plates.

The morphology and growth rate of ice grown in supercooled water are markedly affected by convection of the water. A dendritic ice sheet with water flowing past the dendrite tip exhibits deflection of the dendrite spine toward the upstream direction, accelerated growth of secondary spines on the upstream side, and suppression 01" secondaries on the downstream side. Flow causes a thin disk to become corrugated, the corrugations being parallel to the flow. Flow causes an increase in the growth rate of the ice. IF a small seed of ice is placed in slightly supercooled water, it grows initially as a disk with the axis of the disk parallel to the c axis of the ice crystal.' It appears that growth in the c direction is inhibited, while growth occurs with equal facility in all directions in the basal plane. It appears that growth rate as a function of interface temperature is very nearly equal for all directions similarly oriented relative to the c axis. Subsequent to the discoid growth, branching occurs and dendrites develop. The primary dendrite spines grow parallel to the six equivalent a axes of the crystal. Secondary, and in some cases, tertiary spines also grow in these directions. The highly anisotropic: dendritic growth indicates that there must be some finite difference of growth rate for different directions in the basal plane. These differences must be quite small, however, since if they were large, the discoid mode would not occur. Hence, it was expected that the dendrite growth direction could be deflected from the crystallographic direction by perturbation of the thermal field at the dendrite tip. Experiments were done in which perturbation of the thermal field was accomplished by causing the supercooled water to flow past the dendrite tip. The flow direction was perpendicular to the c axis of the crystal, and was perpendicular to the primary spine of the unperturbed crystal. Supercooled water was supplied by a 15 cm cubical copper box, which was refrigerated and insulated so it could cool water to temperatures down to —2oC, and maintain the temperature constant to O.l°C for the duration of a run. Means for observing the ice are shown in Fig. l(a). Collimated light passes through the ice sheet and forms an image on the ground glass screen. A lucite box containing dry air was employed to prevent condensation. Ice of the desired orientation was provided by the seed holder shown in Fig. l(b). This device was made of lucite, and had a reservoir in which ice could be frozen by placing it in a freezer. This reservoir com-unicated with the outside only through a narrow gap between two sheets of lucite. The seed holder (after ice had been washed off its exterior) was immersed in the tank of supercooled water, the narrow gap terminating in a slot in the top of the flow channel. Ice growing through a thin water layer in the gap between the two sheets of lucite was oriented so its c axis was perpendicular to the sheets. This orientation is an application of a growth phenomenon2 which causes ice growing along a smooth solid surface in supercooled water to orient itself so its c axis is normal to the surface. The Conda phosphate mine, eight miles north of Soda Springs in Caribou County, Idaho, was opened up by the Anaconda Copper Mining CO. in 1920. Except for brief periods, during the 20's and early 30's, the mine has maintained a continuous production, and 2,100,000 short tons of phosphate rock have been shipped to the company's phosphate fertilizer manufacturing plant at Anaconda, Mont., or to independent processing plants on the Pacific Coast; a small tonnage of the rock has been shipped to the Hawaiian Islands. The Phosphoria formation on the Conda property consists of two, commercial-grade phosphate beds separated by 147 ft of black to brownish colored phosphatic calcareous shales interbedded with softer mudstones, clays, and occasional narrow seams of oolitic phosphate. The main lower phosphate bed in the series averaging 7.1 ft in thickness, is called the "foot-wall bed," which lies coriformably on the Wells limestone formation, the 1atter often containing irregular bands of chert. The upper or " hanging-wall bed" of phosphate rock averaging 7.2 ft in thickness, is overlaid by thick quartzite beds, locally called the " Rex chert" member in the upper portion of the Phosphoria formation. (Fig 1.) There are two anticlines on the property with axis striking approximately parallel to the mountain range beneath which extensive development on phosphate rock has been conducted in the past, and is now in progress. The phosphate beds have been eroded to a large extent from the tops of these anticlines, leaving at least three well-pronounced outcrops of the phosphate beds exposed within the boundaries of the Anaconda Copper Mining Cornpany's properties. At present, mining operations in the Conda No. 3 mine are confined to the two phosphate beds along the east flank of the easternmost anticline, where the dips on the beds vary from 50° to 60° east, thereby affording favorable conditions for the sublevel mining system now in use. Mining operations formerly were confined to the footwall or lower oolitic phosphate bed because of its higher phosphate and vanadium contents (32 pct P²O5 and 0.29 pct V2 O 5); this bed averages 7.1 ft in thickness. The oolitic portions of the upper bed were of satisfactory grade, but the shale and clay partings (Fig 2) diluted the mined rock and could not he separated economically by selective mining or by sorting. Experiments in beneficiating this rock were carried on for a number of years. Recently, a simple washing process was adopted, which gave a satisfactory grade of concentrates and a high recovery of P² O5. In 1947 it was decided to expand Anaconda's production of treble superphosphate and phosphoric acid by approximately 90 pct. This rock will be obtained from the footwall and hanging-wall beds, and the rock from the hanging-wall bed will be benefici-ated at -Anaconda.l In order to take advantage of the previous development on the 500 secondary haulage level, short crosscuts will be driven at approximately 950 ft intervals from the existing lateral drifts through the hanging-wall shale beds. From the inner end of each crosscut, short lateral drifts will he driven in both directions, so that four working raises can he put up on the dip of the phosphate bed at proper intervals along each of the lateral drifts. A simple radioactive tracer technique is used to measure the diffusion coefficient of calcium ion in molten slags. In a slag of 40 pct Ca0-40 pct Si0,-20 pct Al203, Dc " at 1450°C is 1.3x10-6 cm' sec-'. THE application of the principles of thermodynamics to steel and iron making problems has proved so fruitful that the kinetic approach has tended to be neglected. It seems probable that in some reactions the rate-determining step is the dif-fusivity of the reactants or of the products. But knowledge of the diffusion coefficients of the constituents of liquid slag and metal is singularly lacking. The present work was undertaken as a first step toward supplying such data for slags. Furthermore, any additional information on the physical properties of liquid slags might be expected to help in elucidating their structure. It is essentially a preliminary investigation, the course of which was determined more by the necessity of establishing a method than by the immediate intrinsic interest of the results. For example, the selection of calcium ion to be studied was dictated by the suitability of the isotope Ca45 in that it is a simple emitter with a long half-life. Of the other ions commonly encountered in slags, the isotopes of iron and manganese have relatively complex radiations as well as the normal disadvantage of requiring control of the oxygen potential of the atmosphere; Mg27 and Al29 have half-lives measured only in minutes; Si3' has a simple decay process but its half-life of 2.8 hr is too short for preliminary studies; the only useful oxygen isotope is the stable O18; and there remain only sulphur and phosphorus both of which have suitable isotopes but were rejected as being of less fundamental interest than calcium. Similarly a lime-alumina- silica slag was used in preference to calcium silicate primarily because of its low melting point and its capacity to form a glass on fairly rapid cooling. Literature Review Very few studies of diffusion in liquid silicate systems have been reported. In order to determine the origin of diopside inclusions in felspathic rocks, Bowen1 investigated the diffusion between diopside and various mixtures of albite and anorthite. Platinum crucibles were used with diopside, the heavier of the two liquids, forming the lower half of the cell and diffusion taking place against gravity. Change in concentration along the diffusion path was found by measuring the refractive index of the quenched glass. Nearly thirty years later McCallum and Barrett2 used essentially the same method to determine the diffusion coefficient of lime in lime-alumina-silica slags. In this case the interest was to find the rate-determining step in the process of slag attack on refractory materials. In an investigation of the kinetics of the sulphur reaction, Derge, Philbrook, and Goldman8 determined the diffusion coefficient of sulphur in a typical blast furnace slag by the simple procedure of melting a slag containing 2 pct S over an identical slag sulphur-free. They make no claim to a high degree of accuracy but suggest that D, is of the order of 10-6 cm2 sec-l. Other high temperature liquid diffusion studies have been concerned with metals. Holbrook, Furnas, and Joseph4 determined the diffusion coefficients of silicon, phosphorus, sulphur, manganese, and carbon in liquid iron by immersing a small carbon crucible containing pure iron-carbon alloy in a large vessel containing iron with a high concentration of the particular element. Their results were confirmed by Paschke and Hauttmann5 using a similar method. The effect of heating a producing well on the rate of oil recovery has been analyzed in the simple case of a well producing oil by a radial drive and in the steady state. Differences of production rates with and without borehole heating have been calculated and plotted; these measure some of the benefits of the thermal recovery process. A striking feature is that the production increase tends rapidly to a constant value for large production rates. Some concrete examples, including a rough comparison with field data. are discussed. Heating requirements have been calculated and plotted on the assumption that the heaters used are 100 per cent efficient. Heating has been thought of as applying only to low volume wells producing heavy oils. However, the calculations suggest that the thermal process considered might be profitable even for some wells producing large quantities of light oil, especially in unconsolidated formations where fracturing is not possible. In the case of wells producing other fluids with the oil or of wells producing partly or wholly by gravity drainage, the theory developed does not apply in detail. It can be expected, however, that any general qualitative be-havior will remain valid. Under normal temperature conditions, high viscosity emulsions sometimes form around the wellbore, lowering the permeability in the vicinity of the well and impeding the production of oil. Borehole heating often prevents such emulsification. This important effect is not easily amenable to mathematical analysis and has not been included in the theory presented here. It should therefore be kept in mind that the benefits due to borehole heating may in fact exceed the values given by the following calculations. INTRODUCTION The recovery of viscous, low gravity oils can often be stimulated by applying heat to the production zone. The higher temperature lowers the viscosity of the oil, increasing its mobility, and therefore its rate of production. One thermal method of recovery 1,2,3,4. consists in operating a heater inside a producing well and, at the same time, producing oil from the well. In this paper a simple theoretical model is analyzed to study the effect of such heating on the recovery of oil. The reservoir mechanics of the process is the only aspect of the problem which is considered here. The details of the heating system are ignored, and it is simply assumed that the heater raises the temperature in the immediate vicinity of the producing well to a pre-assigned temperature T w. Although heating requirements are calculated, these refer only to the heat supplied to the formation and to the oil being produced; they do not include heat losses due to the inefficiency of the heater. A short outline of the theory follows: The heat supplied to the producing well flows out into the formation by means of thermal conduction. At the same time, the flow of oil carries heat by convection from the formation towards the producing well. After sufficient time has elapsed, a steady-state is reached where the temperature, the velocity of the oil, etc., no longer vary with time but are functions of position only. In the steady state the temperature decays like an inverse power from the high value Tw at the wellbore to the original reservoir temperature T. at some distance away from the well. The effect of the high temperature and low oil viscosity near the producing well is the same as if the oil were produced at reservoir temperature To but through a producing well of a larger radius. NORMALLY, the Britannia ore mixture contains chalcopyrite and pyrite as the chief sulfide minerals, together with minor amounts of gold and silver and a low zinc content. Reduction is accomplished by jaw crushers underground, followed at the concentrating plant by Symons cone crushers, rolls, and ball mills. The standard flotation practice, evolved during several years of experimentation, provided for bulk flotation of the two sulfides, after primary grinding to only approximately 35 mesh, followed by regrinding of the bulk concentrate, with subsequent separation of the chalcopyrite and pyrite to make a marketable concentrate of each mineral. This so-called standard milling practice has previously been described in detail in U. S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6619. A modification will he discussed here. In the face of a constantly increasing world surplus of copper and a steadily falling price during 1930 and 1931, it was obviously undesirable to continue unprofitable production of large quantities of this metal. PART I INTRODUCTION Among the zinc base alloys used for casting in metal moulds, particularly die casting, those alloys containing aluminum usually together with copper, are probably the most widely used. The reason lies in their desirable mechanical properties and the fluidity and absence of hot shortness which facilitate casting. Objection to the use of these alloys may bee raised on account of the rather frequent instances of failure of a type variously described as disintegration, exfoliation and intercrystalline corrosion. In all cases which have come to our knowledge where the conditions of service were known, failure has occurred upon exposure to moisture and heat varying from a hot moist atmosphere to high pressure steam. Moreover, the alloys described in all such cases contain impurities or alloying metals which the present authors have found to have enormous accelerating effects on intercrystalline oxidation in zinc-aluminum alloys. Thus Williams1 experimented with an alloy containing a large percentage of tin exposed in Cuba. Bauer2 reports failure of a boiler plug containing over 1 per cent. of impurities, doubtless lead for the most part, and Rawdon's3 examinations were made on an alloy containing 0.4 per cent. lead also exposed to the Tropics. No thorough investigation of the nature and cause of this type of failure has been made heretofore, so far as the authors are aware, although Rawdon correctly classified it as internal oxidation. We have, therefore, carried out this investigation in order to determine the exact nature of this phenomenon and the effect of other metals present as impurities or intentional additions in accelerating or-retarding it. In the appendix we include a considerable amount of data which may be valuable in selecting an alloy combining good physical properties with high resistance to oxidation.

NEW demands for underground power in the Miami mine of the Miami Copper Co., Miami, Ariz. has brought about expansion of the distribution system for both ac and dc power. Progress in mining equipment and the normal changes in the mine were responsible for this increased demand. Early power requirements were for pumping and haulage. A 440 v ac power line down No. 5 shaft took care of a small pumping load and shaft station lighting, 275 v dc power was generated by motor generator sets on the surface, with a churn drill hole from surface to the 570 haulage level serving as a cableway. Electric lights were installed where power was available, and thus were confined to the haulage level and shaft stations. All industrial power in the Miami area is 25-cycle, which dates back to the hydroelectric generator installation at Roosevelt Dam in 1908-10. The Problem The main haulage level was moved to the 720 level and later, to the 1000 level, requiring a longer feeder line with the resultant voltage drop. Also, as mining progressed to the east, the churn drill hole for the power cable would have been subjected to subsidence cracks. The first extension in the use of electricity was in electric blasting. About 1935 the mine went to electric blasting, using the dc haulage current. Bringing electric current to the working levels of the mine for blasting greatly expanded the use of electric lights. Lights were used in tool rooms, powder and cap magazines, stairways, and other semi-permanent installations. Like all mines, Miami Copper began to study and experiment with mechanical mucking and transportation of ore by slushers, shakers, and belts during the late 1930's and early 1940's. At the beginning of the program, power was supplied from the haulage level 275 v dc system. Later it became necessary to run a cable, carrying 440 v ac power, down the No. 7 ventilation shaft. The increased use of power came about gradually, and many new problems were added, not the least being the introduction of switch boards and power cables into the working areas of the mine, where drifts and crosscuts take weight, and require repairs. The 25-cycle current presented special problems, in that 25-cycle transformers are twice as large and about 2V2 times as heavy as 60-cycle transformers of the same power output.
