"Abstract — Concentrations of tailpipe pollutants from diesel-powered. underground mine vehicles change over time due to engine wear and the need for maintenance. Since this deterioration in pollutant emissions may adversely affect the air quality in an underground mine, it should be monitored and controlled. This paper presents decision criteria concerning when to service a mine vehicle diesel engine. These criteria, based on mine air and tailpipe concentration measurements, are designed to maintain the tailpipe concentrations within limits that assure satisfactory mine air quality.Application of the deterioration criteria to mine vehicle emissions involves:establishing, for each pollutant, the allowable deterioration factor, anddetermining the deterioration factor, from the mine air and tailpipe diesel pollutant measurements, and the mine air threshold limit values (TLVs).If the deterioration factor is greater than or equal to the allowable deterioration factor the vehicle is removed from service for maintenance.An analysis applying the criteria to measurements made in an underground coal mine is presented. The tailpipe pollutant concentration data were collected using the Emissions Mea-surement Apparatus (EMA) developed by Michigan Techno-logical University. Since the TLV for diesel particulate matter (DPM) has not yet been established assumed mine air DPMTLVs of 15 and 1.0 mg/m3 were used in the analysis. For all of the diesel haulage vehicles included in the analysis. DPM was found to be the critical pollutant (the one most in need of control). For an assumed mine air DPM TLV of 15 mg/m3 none of the diesel haulage vehicles would he removed from service. However reducing the DPM TLV to 1.0 mg/m3 would make it necessary to remove two of the three vehicles tested from service."

"The development of computer process control at the Lake Dufault concentrator is reviewed and the on-stream X-ray analysis -computer system is described briefly. Some applications of the computer in metallurgical process control are described.The computer sequences slurry sample streams to the analyzer and translates the analytical results from voltage signals to elemental percentages. The required flotation reagent flow rates are calculated from analyses and mill-feed tonnage rates and the reagent feeders are set automatically to provide such flow rates. X-ray calibration time has been reduced from about 45 minutes to 15 minutes by the use of a computer program. Metallurgical and operating personnel have acquired the ability to program the computer and have extended the system capability to allow the calculation of recoveries, averaging of mill data, application of ore specific gravity in grinding control, control of oxidized ore flotation and the development of an economic recovery program."

Predictive ground-water modeling is currently being applied to a wide range of engineering applications. In recent years models have been used to evaluate the effect of large ground-water withdrawals on regional water supplies; subsidence associated with overpumping; siting and design studies for chemical dumps; siting and safety aspects of nuclear waste storage; and heavy metal migration from disposal sites. Similar modeling techniques could be used to analyze water-related problems in the minerals industry such as mine dewatering (both open pit and underground), environmental and pollution control, and process water supply and disposal The objective of this discussion is to describe how ground-water models are being used to assist in the solution of water-related problems outside the industry and to extrapolate that use to mining problems.

THE term "longwall mining" is best known to coal men, although modifications of the method are continually being used in other fields. Longwall mining is of interest today because it makes for greater mecha-nization and better supervision at the working face, and therefore lower production costs and increased safety. It is an approach to the factory system of production, the high efficiency of which as compared to that in mines is well known. There is available an accumulation of experience regarding this work but coordination of experience is lacking and this series of experiments was undertaken to help serve this purpose. Model experiments were used for reasons of safety, cost and time, and because it has been previously shown1,2,3 that a scalar model built of the same material as the prototype will behave in a manner similar to that of the prototype, with time effects the same, if the effective weight of the model is increased in the same proportion as its linear dimensions are decreased. This is accomplished by substituting a centrifugal for the gravitational field; i.e., placing the model in a centrifuge and controlling the strength of the centrifugal field by varying the rate of rotation. Many factors affect the behavior of the geologic material overlying a bed, therefore results and conclusions contained in this paper apply only to the conditions presented herein.

In late 1997 a request was received to assist with determining the powered support unit (shield) load capacities for the planned 2 seam short wall. This project had a number of aspects which made it attractive to utilize numerical modelling in conjunction with other more conventional design tools in the design of the shields. Amongst these were: The 2 seam panels were to be laid out about 25 m below the previously short walled 4 seam, the 4 seam had in turn been over-mined by the 5 seam long wall, the proposed face height of the 2 seam short wall was 5.5 m while the 4 seam had been mined at 4 m. The top seam in the area (5 seam) had been mined at between 1.5 and 2.2 m high, the face conditions with about 95 m of broken material applying dead weight loading to the 2 to 4 seam inter-burden septum were hard to predict and cyclical loading due to the presence of strong sandstone bands in the 2 to 4 seam inter-burden. The basic thrust of the study was to take the known, and successful, situation (4 seam short wall) and carry out comparative modelling to enable prediction of likely 2 seam conditions. Some two dimensional aspects studied were: 5 m goaf hanging up behind shields, stresses in beams to determine likely first goaf roof span, stresses in cantilever beams to asses cyclical loading due to sandstone bands in the interburden being loaded by the overlying goaf and stresses on chain and crush pillars adjacent to the goaf edge. Three dimensional aspects that were investigated included: Load distribution along face for close goafing and 5 m goaf hang-up and load in a 1 m wide rib modelled in the position of the powered support units. From the modelling it was possible to determine the optimal shield leg capacity of the new 2 seam equipment. These outputs were used when drawing up the technical specifications for manufacture of the new equipment. The face was successfully commissioned in August 2002. L’idée principale de l’étude fut de prendre la situation connue et réussie (couche 4 courte taille) et de faire une modélisation comparative pour prédire les conditions probables de la couche 2. Certains des aspects à double dimension qui furent étudiés étaient : Un accrochage de remblai de 5m derrière les boucliers ; contraintes dans les poutres pour déterminer le premier intervalle probable entre remblai et toit ; contraintes dans les poutres en porte-à-faux pour évaluer le chargement cyclique causé par les bandes de grès dans l’entre-fardeau qui est accablé par le remblai et les contraintes sur les piliers par chaîne et d’écrasement adjacents au bord du remblai. Aspects à trois dimensions qui furent étudiés : Distribution de la charge le long de la taille pour les remblais proches et l’accrochage de remblai de 5 m et la charge dans une nervure de 1 m de large modelée dans la position des unités de soutènement mécanisées. La modélisation a permis de déterminer la capacité de portée optimale du bouclier du dispositif nouveau pour la couche 2. Olympic Dam Operation is located in the Stuart Shelf Geological Province approximately 520 km north-north-west of Adelaide in South Australia. It is estimated to be one of the worldÆs top five copper orebodies by size and the biggest single occurrence of uranium. The deposit was discovered by Western Mining Corporation in 1975. Exploration was based on a conceptual model for the formation of sediment hosted copper deposits together with gravity and magnetic anomalies.The capital cost of the current expansion is estimated to be A$ 1.64 billion. The underground expansion includes a total of 36 km of lateral development, a railway haulage system delivering ore from a series of ore passes to a new crusher station and a significant increase in ventilation capacity and mine services.In the current underground expansion the mining method will essentially remain unchanged. The ore handling system will incorporate some recent advances in technology, improving efficiency and safety standards.Major infrastructure excavations are designed by a team of engineers attached to the Olympic Dam Expansion Project and a number of consulting groups. Once the expansion is fully completed it is expected to increase the current annual underground production level from 3.4 Mt to 9.0 Mt of ore by the year 2000. Mine design engineers working for the Olympic Dam Operation have recently completed a three year final design plan to achieve this target.Access to the existing mine is through the decline and Whenan shaft. The Whenan shaft was originally sunk as an exploration access and later upgraded for hoisting. The 4 km long service decline connecting to the Whenan shaft was later constructed to accommodate the increase in service demand. The Robinson and Sir Lindsay Clark shafts were developed at later stages to cater for the hoisting during and following the expansion lead up.

The problem of surface support in coal mining is naturally divided into three branches: 1. Surface covered with improvements of such value as compared with the value of the underlying coal, or with such elements of danger to mining, that absolute support is essential. 2. Surface with improvements of less value than the underlying coal such that moderate settlement may be permitted, but destructive settlement must be avoided, either by reason of danger to human life or unwarranted property damage. 3. Surface of relatively small value as compared with the underlying coal where destructive settlement may be permitted. First Problem In the first case it is evident that the original support must be maintained either (a) by leaving ample pillars and confining the coal recovery to a very conservative first mining, (b) by so supporting less conservative first mining by filling or flushing that the gradual deterioration of the pillars may be prevented and subsidence avoided, or (c) by incompressible support as masonry either as an adjunct to insufficient pillars or in place of the original coal support. a. There are no particular nor unique features of iron mining that are not shared in some degree by all mining ventures everywhere. There are, however, at least three problems that have acquired a special emphasis from a unique cause. That cause is the embarrassment of riches under which the industry is suffering. The most obvious' feature of iron mining today is the copious abundance of usable ore and its almost universal distribution over the face of the earth. By the term "usable ore" is meant ore that is amenable to reduction by the usual and conventional processes. Amidst this plenty, three problems become acutely emphasized: 1. The geographic location that will provide a mine with the best market opportunity. 2. The size of the orebody that will be required to' return the preproduction investment. 3. The geometry and configuration of the orebody that will permit quality control measures to be effectively executed.

The precipitation phenomena occurring in cobalt-tantalum alloys have been investigated in the temperature range frm 500" to 1050°C by correlating the results of metallographic, X-ray, micro-and macrohardness, and electrical resistivity studies. The property andmacrohardness,changes were found to depend on 1) general precipitation, and 2) lamellar precipitation. Two new intermetallic phases have been identified: 1) a Co3Ta, a metastable ordered face-centered-cubic compound, and 2) a stable ß Co3Ta phase of hexagonal structure. In addition, the previously reported Co2Ta phase was found to exist in two allotropic modifications: the hexagonal MgZn,-type and the cubic MgCu2-type Laves phases. SINCE a large variety of structures can result as a consequence of the decomposition of a solid solution, predictions on the nature of property changes are difficult, if not impossible, to make. For any rational attempt to correlate properties and structures of a precipitation-hardenable alloy, a detailed understanding of the kinetics of decomposition and morphology of phase separation, as well as knowledge of phase relationships, appears to be prerequisite. Information of this type has been accumulated in the past for many alloy systems, both of theoretical and pastforpractical importance.1,2 Although the presence of intermetallic compounds has been reported in cobalt-base alloys,3 the amount of published information on precipitation-hardenable cobalt-base systems is very limited. A survey of the binary phase diagrams of cobalt indicates that cobalt-tantalum alloys might be of interest as typical of other cobalt-base systems in which Laves phases of the A,B type can be precipitated from solid solution. The present work has been undertaken, therefore, to study the kinetics and morphology of the precipitation reaction in this system and to establish a base for a correlation between the structural aspects and properties in this class of alloys. PREVIOUS WORK The only available phase diagram of the cobalt-tantalum system is based on the work of Koster and Mulfinger. According to these authors, the maximum solubility of tantalum in cobalt is about 13 pct (at 1275°C) and. less than 7 pct at room temperature. Tantalum additions lower the temperature of allotropic transformation of cobalt (about 420°C), and at 7 pct Ta, the high-temperature face-centered-cubic modification (ß cobalt) is retained at room temperature. The precipitating phase was originally designated as Co5Ta2 compound (55.2 pct Ta, about 1550°C melting point), but subsequent investigations by wallbaum5" identified this constituent as the A,B-type Laves phase. Wallbaum's data indicate that there are two modifications of this intermetallic compound: one richer in cobalt (Co2.2 Tao.8)of the hexagonal MgNi, type; and another of a higher tantalum content (Co2Ta) of the cubic MgCu, type. On the other hand, Elliott7 found that the cobalt-rich alloy (CO2.10,Tao.~l) was predominantly the cubic MgCu, type at 800°C and a mixture of both the MgCu2 and the hexagonal MgZn,-type Laves phases at 1000°C. At 1200°C, Elliott found only the MgZn, type while at 1400°C, he observed only the MgCu2 type. At the stoichiometric composition, Co2Ta, Elliott reported only the cubic MgCu2-type Laves phase in the temperature range of 600oto 1600°C. The precipitation of the cobalt-tantalum intermetallic compound is accompanied by a marked increase in hardness. According to Koster's4 data, the Brinell hardness of an 8 pct Ta-Co alloy increases from 230 to 340 upon short-time aging at 800°C. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The binary cobalt-tantalum alloys investigated contained 5, 10, and 15 pct Ta. The range of tantalum additions was thus slightly broader than the reported minimum and maximum solid solubility limits of tantalum in cobalt (7 and 13 pct, respectively)4 The alloys were vacuum-induction melted in a magnesia crucible using cobalt rondelles and technically pure tantalum sheet as raw materials. Deoxidation of the melt was accomplished with carbon, and the chemical analysis of the alloys is given in Table I. The effect of isothermal aging treatments on the progress of precipitation was studied on samples cut from cast ingots. These samples were solution treated for 2 hr at 1250°C and water-quenched. Aging was conducted in the temperature range from 500" to 1050°C for periods between 15 min and 1000 hr and followed by water-quenching. To prevent contamination from the atmosphere, all samples were sealed in evacuated Vycor or quartz tubes for heat-treatments. For solution treatment, argon at 0.2 atmospheric pressure was introduced prior to sealing of the capsule to prevent collapse at high temperature, and titanium sponge was placed at one end of the capsule to act as a getter. Metals From Oil Shale. -A Geological Survey News Release in mid-January indicated that a surface sample analysis of oil shale in central Montana found a ton of shale to contain up to 13 pounds of zinc, 2 pounds of nickel, 1.8 pounds of molybdenum, 16 pounds of vanadium oxide, and nearly a quarter pound of selenium. It might be possible to recover some of these metals economically on a byproduct basis. The shale in central Montana was also estimated to contain 180 billion barrels of synthetic crude oil, which compares to estimated oil reserves in the Middle East of 360 billion barrels. Merchant Fleet Dwindles. -The National Maritime Council reports that although the U.S. is the world's largest trading power and that well over 90% of its foreign trade is conducted by shipping, the U.S. fleet is tenth in absolute numbers and less than 5% of its foreign trade is carried on U.S. ships. In 30 years, the U.S. fleet has dwindled from over 4,000 oceangoing vessels to about 600. U.S. ships carry less than 2% of imported iron ore, bauxite, and tungsten, and only 3% of oil imports.

In this work, strontium doped lanthanum ferrite (LSF) and their composite cathodes were fabricated by screen printing on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolytes. Their electrochemical properties were evaluated by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and steady-state polarization methods. All the cathodes were screened by comparing their total polarization resistances before and after activation processes at different temperatures. The improved LSF composite cathodes were also screen-printed on YSZ/NiO half cells to fabricate solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), which have reached the output power densities of 170 mW/cm2 at 650 °C, 230 mW/cm2 at 700 °C, 304 mW/cm2 at 750 °C and 388 mW/cm2 at 800 °C.

Dimension stone includes a wide variety of natural materials that are put to an equally wide variety of uses. It is possible to classify dimension stone according to the end use to which the stone is put or according to the lithology of the stone. Both schemes are used by the United States Bureau of Mines in the annual Minerals Yearbook. The 1969 Yearbook lists 15 specific uses and has additional miscellaneous catagories. The same Yearbook lists five specific rock types or lithologies, and also includes a miscellaneous category. In a short presentation it would hardly be possible to list and define all these categories, much less discuss the evaluation of deposits with regard to all possible combinations. Besides, I am only slightly familiar with some of the uses and their requirements. I have therefore chosen to limit my remarks to some special problems in evaluating dimension stone that is to be cut and finished to specific sizes, tolerances, and finishes for use in buildings and some monuments. This use class is called cut stone in the Minerals Yearbook. In terms of dollar value it is the largest single use category. In 1969 the dollar value of cut stone was $29,122,000 which is more than twice the value of the next largest category. For those of you who are interested in other use applications of dimension stone I suggest that you start with recent articles by Bowles (1960), Currier (1960), and Barton (1968).

Reconstruction of historical exposures to silica dust is required in an ongoing cohort mortality study of workers in the diatomaceous earth (DE) industry. However, historical data were collected using three different sampling methods. This study was conducted to derive empirical quantitative relationships from linear regression equations between the three methods: standard impinger, total mass, and respirable mass. Dust from one diatomaceous earth processing plant was sampled simultaneously by all three methods. Results from 61 clusters of the three sampling devices indicate that the phcle size distribution of the dust varies with the two parent products sampled. baghouse product and main product. The relationships between particle counts and respirable mass are: Respirable mass (mg/m3) = 0.064 (mppd) impinger count for baghouse product dust, and respirable mass (mg/m3) = 0.018 (mppcf) impinger count for main product dust. The relationships between particle counts and total mass are: Total mass (mg/m3) = 0.837 (mppcf) impinger count for baghouse product, and total mass (mg/m3) = 1.21 (mppcf) for main product dust. In all four euuations, the intercept did not differ significantly from zero, and the correlation coefficients ranged from 0.90 to 0.95. Results are compared with data from four previously published studies.

Iodide zirconium was combined with calculated amounts of nitrided zirconium sponge and arc melted to prepare alloys in the 0 to 6 wt pct N region. Annealing treatments were carried out at 21 temperature levels. Metallographic examination of the heat-treated specimens permitted construction of the binary phase diagram from 0 to 6 pct N. Features of the diagram include the peritectic formation of both a and ß solid solutions. The maximum solubility of nitrogen is 0.8 pct in 8 zirconium and 4.8 pct in a zirconium. An X-ray study of nitrided materials was made in the range 6 to 13 wt pct N region because serious nitrogen losses were experienced when attempts were made to arc melt these high nitrogen alloys. PHASE relationships in the Zr-N system have been determined. Due to the inability to retain nitrogen in nitrogen-rich alloys subjected to arc melting, definitive work was possible only in the range 0 to 6 wt pct (0 to 30 atomic pct) N. Sufficient complementary X-ray work was done to permit construction of the binary phase diagram up to 13.3 wt pct (50 atomic pct) N (ZrN). Small ingots were prepared by arc melting master alloys with enough zirconium to produce an alloy of the desired composition. Following pretreatment, alloys were annealed at temperature levels between 600" and 2020°C. Determination of the phase boundaries was then accomplished by metallographic evaluation of specimens quenched from the various temperatures. Incipient melting techniques were used to corroborate solidus curves, and X-ray diffraction was employed to study the nitrogen-rich region of the a + ZrN phase field. Materials Westinghouse Grade 1 iodide zirconium crystal bar served as the base material for this investigation. The as-received bars were lightly sandblasted, pickled in a 20 pct HN0-5 pct HF aqueous solution, rinsed in water and acetone, and dried. They were rolled to about 1/32 in. strip and acid-pickled, followed by water and then acetone rinses. The material was sheared to approximately 1/4 in. squares, cleaned with acetone, and stored for use. Pure zirconium nitride is not commercially available, according to correspondence with possible suppliers. A literature survey indicated that nitrogen may be introduced into zirconium metal by passing nitrogen or ammonia gas over zirconium at an elevated temperature. After considerable experimentation, a train was devised whereby high quality nitrogen was passed through a series of bubblers to remove the last traces of oxygen, through an H,SO, bubbler and a cold trap to remove moisture, and finally over zirconium within a resistance furnace. Hand-picked Bureau of Mines magnesium-reduced zirconium sponge proved more amenable to nitriding than the crystal bar. The nitrogen used was extra pure gas purchased from Linde Air Products Co. The first two bubblers through which the gas was passed contained a solution suggested by L. F. Fieser" as being ideal for removing the last traces of oxygen from nitrogen. The solution contains 20 g KOH, 2 g sodium-anthraquinone ,9-sulphonate, and 15 g NaHSO, dissolved in 100 ml water. It is blood-red and turns brown when contaminated with oxygen. A saturated lead acetate solution, next in the series of bubblers, removed any H2S which might have formed in the 0, removal stage. An H,SO, bubbler and cold trap removed moisture before the nitrogen was passed over the zirconium. The zirconium was contained in a stainless steel screen within a Vycor or quartz tube in a resistance furnace. Unreacted nitrogen passed out of the system through a mercury bubbler. A nitriding run was performed in the following manner: Zirconium was placed in the screen within the furnace tube. The unit was assembled, suitably clamped off, and evacuated to remove the air and moisture within the tube and that trapped by the zirconium sponge. The unit was flushed with nitrogen and evacuated twice. After nitrogen was allowed to pass over the zirconium for about 30 min, the furnace was turned on; several hours were required to reach temperature. The reaction was allowed to continue at temperature for about 4 hr and the screen was then withdrawn from the hot zone of the furnace by means of a Nichrome or Kanthal rod. The screen and its contents were allowed to cool at the end of the tube and were then removed. At 800°C no more than about 5 pct N could be introduced into the sponge zirconium. This material was designated M-1 (master alloy No. 1) and reserved for the preparation of alloys in the dilute nitrogen region. A second set of experiments was conducted at 1000°C; no more than 7.2 pct N could be introduced into the zirconium at this temperature. Enough material (M-2) of this nitrogen content was prepared to produce a second set of alloys to complement the first and to provide alloys in the 0 to 6 wt pct N range. It was hoped that a diffusion anneal plus a re-nitriding might yield a material of higher nitrogen content. Mountain Pass, California is located 96 km southwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, and has an exposed surface orebody within view of Interstate Highway 15. Mineral prospecting in this region dates back to about 1860 followed by the discovery and subsequent mining (1870-1895) of silver bearing veins on the north slope of nearby Clark Mountain. In contrast to the four lane divided interstate highway of today, all supplies needed for mining during this early history were transported by wagons from San Bernardino which is 320 km west. Many small lead mines were active in the area during 1917-20, and a small gold mine operated in 1941-42 within 100 m of the orebody presently being worked. In 1949 two prospectors searching for uranium with a Geiger counter discovered a radioactive vein outcrop at Mountain Pass. Further investigation revealed the presence of a large amount of a light-brown, heavy mineral to a depth of about 2 m. A sample of this unidentified mineral was submitted to the Boulder City, Nevada, U.S. Bureau of Mines where a spectroscope examination shoved high level rare earth oxides, carbon dioxide, and fluorine. These results indicated the mineral was bastnasite.

The overall purpose of this research was to improve the understanding of how the post disaster seismic location system works, what determines the signal size, what is the character of the seismic noise, how well the system can detect blows from a trapped miner, and how well the source of the blows can be located. Based on an improved understanding of the system, improvements were suggested in the seismic subarray configuration, and in the system deployment procedures. An important part of this research was to become familiar with the seismic system operation and to work with the Westinghouse Electric Corporation and MSHA personnel to modify and improve the system. To accomplish this we participated in the planning, execution, and data analysis for a number of seismic field tests. Several in-mine field tests were conducted. From these tests the capabilities of an in-mine seismic system were analyzed and specifications were made for designing an operational in-mine system. Several portions of the work done on this grant were covered in previous reports. In particular the capabilities or the presently operational surface based seismic location system has been thoroughly documented by Durkin and Greenfield (1981). Portions of the location procedures and effects of mine openings on seismic signals have also previously been published. These portions or the work will only be summarized in this final report.

"The mineralogical studies done on Hope Brook ore samples indicated that a heap leach gold recovery process may be possible. In the metallurgicalprogram that followed, column tests confirmed this interpretation. A 9300 tonne demonstration heap leach test, in the late fall of 1985, reaffirmed laboratory results while identifying operating conditions that will have to be addressed in a production heap leach plan. Operating plans, gold recoveries and cost areas will be presented.Another important factor in a successful operation is the environment approach.LocationThe Hope Brook gold deposit is located 5 km inland from Cinq Cerf Bay on the south coast of Newfoundland. Port au x Basques is 80 km west and Burgeo 40 km to the east of Hope Brook. As there are no roads in the area, access to the site is by sea or air (Fig. I). The Hope Brook orebody is near the saddle of three watersheds flowing to Cinq Cerf Brook, Boat Hole Brook and Betty's Pond. Acceptable solutions to several environmental concerns can be obtained by using the relative sensitivities of these watersheds.The terrain at the site is generally rolling to hummocky with numerous small ponds separated with rock outcrops and patches of peat covering. Tree vegetation is sparse except in the sheltered areas around Couteau Bay and Cinq Cerf Brook. GeologyThe Chetwynd deposit is hosted by the Lower to Middle Ordovician Georges Brook Formation of the La Poile Group, a thick sequence of volcanic and sedimentary rocks.The Hope Brook Zone contains the largest concentration of gold found to date at Chetwynd. The zone occurs as an intensely silicified lens 100 m to 550 m long (average 400 m) by up to 60 m in width and forms the eastern portion of a more extensive, 4 km long , alteration zone trending at 053 degrees Az and dipping 70 degrees southeast.The Hope Brook Zone contains massive finely granular quartz, scattered blue quartz eyes, 3070 to 8% pyrite, minor calcopyrite and trace molybdenite. Barren silicification envelopes the gold mineralization. The zone is flanked to the southeast by a 200 metre thick aluminosilicate alteration zone and to the northwest by a 10 metre barren pyritic siliceous fragmental rock . The original lithology may be either a thick felsic pyroclastic sequence or a quartz porphyry sill that has been altered by hydrothermal processes. Silica flooding of the permeable host was accompanied by gold deposition."

"A sample of flotation feed from Bakertalc Inc., High water, Quebec was subjected to flotation evaluation to improve the recovery of talc. A number of alternative frother/collectors and depressants as well as flotation parameters including pH, conditioning time, frother/collector concentration and pulp density were assessed. In addition, the possibility of using a size coarser than that currently employed for flotation (95% minus 50 um) was investigated.As far as possible, a laboratory duplication of the present circuit arrangement was folio wed so as to minimize the cost of any changes. The best results obtained were a concentrate analyzing 95.96% acid insol for a recovery of 65.98% after four stages of cleaning. With recirculation of cleaner tailings, the recovery would be higher.The possibility of using an alternative method, based on the natural ability of talc to float unaided by a frother/collector, was briefly explored with encouraging results.IntroductionBakertalc lnc ., located in the eastern townships at Highwater, Quebec, Is approximately 140 km east of Montreal near the Vermont, U.S. border. Originally called Baker Mining and Milling Co. Ltd., it has produced pulverized talc products since 1938(1 ), although records show that talc was mined in the area as early as 1871(2). Feed to the mill originally was obtained from local deposits, but since 1952 the van Reet mine near south Bolton, approximately 25 km from Highwater, has been the source of ore .In 1957 a Raymond high -side roller mill was installed which enabled production of a greater range of talc products and, in 1960, new crushing equipment and a dryer were added. Other additions to the mill were the introduction of wet magnetic separation, although this was later discontinued, and flotation to produce high-grade talc concentrates."

Manufactured by PRIMETALS, to produce steel to exposed automotive market, Turnkey project, with supervision of best practices from Nippon Steel. The main equipment that the process has are; Laser welding machine, 3 loopers, Scale Breaker, jet Pickling tanks, Inspection Station and COGNEX System Side Trimmer (flying width change), Type of Mill: UCMW(S) Carrousel, 2 Tension Reels. The principals goals are, Simulate production programs, validate materials for thin thicknesses before processing, low Re-welds, optimization use Cognex, good performance in Thickness, flatness and productivity.

The national Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health, Ground Control Engineering Branch is investigating the use of shotcrete in weak rock mass mines with the objective of reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from rock fall accidents. When shotcrete is used as part of a multi-element ground support system, it is necessary to know when the material has developed a compressive strength of approximately 1 MPa (145 psi), the early threshold for safe re-entry of miner and machine into shotcreted mine workings at this value, the material has developed enough strength to be self-supporting and to allow for installation of other ground support components that require drilling of the shotcrete layer without degradation. NIOSH researchers have developed methods and portable test equipment to measure shotcrete strength on site in the first six hours after application using a partial beam test standard, a STM C 116-90 (1990). These advances were demonstrated in tests with five commercially available shotcrete mixes, sprayed as dry shotcrete using field expedient methods and equipment. The strength values from these tests allowed for real-time identification of the early strength threshold and were consistent with strengths reported using laboratory-type equipment. Measuring the early strength properties of shotcrete directly at the mine site can improve mine safety by identifying appropriate re-entry times and providing a convenient means of conducting on site quality control during shotcrete applications.
