A geological and geophysical study was con-ducted at the area of Stylos, Hania in order to study the possible mechanisms of saltwater contamination. A new detailed geologic map in scale 1:5,000 was combined with the results of a time lapse geophysical survey using seismic and electrical methods. A fault system in the N-NE direction possibly favors the saltwater intrusion.

Introduction In the same way that a blueprint communicates informa¬tion about a structure, a systems architecture should provide information that guides the construction and implementation of a computing system. Taking the blueprint analogy a step further, a plot plan can also show where, in the "bigger picture," a particular design fits (if in fact it does) and what a builder needs to know about the environment in which he or she will operate. In the context of business systems, a meaningful architecture should convey the following: • the primary purpose of computer-based systems rela¬tive to particular tasks or operations, • the relationship of the systems to each other and an indication of their interaction and dependencies, • the relationship of the systems relative to the organiza¬tion and its objectives, • indications of where IS/IT resources can best be allo¬cated to support the organization and • the overall context in which new systems and technolo¬gies can be assessed for both their impacts on current systems and on the organization itself. In theory, a well-designed systems architecture should allow an organization to focus its resources on those aspects of its business that matter most, thus, leveraging investments in information technology to a competitive advantage. In addition, the way that a computing systems architecture is represented should be un¬derstandable to non-IT staff, and it should be eas¬ily recognized by the people it supports. This pa¬per attempts to show that a meaningful systems model exists and that its applica¬tion to mining can achieve the desired results. The following discus¬sion is based on the au¬thors interpretation of a concept referred to as the computer integrated manu¬acturing (CIM) model, as developed by Allen-Bradley. An inherent strength of the CIM approach is that the model combines aspects of business-reporting structures with the manufacturing process itself. What results is a systems frame¬work that is aligned with relevant business processes and is, therefore, easier for non-IS/IT personnel to interpret. The successful application of the CIM model can be seen in a large number of both discrete and process-manufacturing facilities throughout the United States. This paper provides a brief overview of the CIM model and then describes how the model can be applied at a conceptual level to the mining industry. Finally, this paper proposes an extension to the CIM model that the authors believe will make it easier to understand and apply. CIM model As shown on Fig. 1, the CIM model begins with the most detailed levels of process equipment and works its way up to the highest level of consolidated financial reporting. Systems at each level are characterized by common attributes, users, time frames, etc., providing a clear picture of their interac¬tion. Further analysis of the relationships between systems and between levels provides insight into the opportunities for integration. Regardless of the industry or processes involved, the CIM model provides a framework in which the characteristics of systems and the data they manage can be predicted based on the nature of the business function they support. In general, as data moves upward from the lower rungs of the CIM model, it changes from de¬scribing the physical na¬ture of a process to describ¬ing its financial aspects (e.g., from productivity to cost). The separation of feldspars from quartz has been the subject of numerous studies since 1930 and the flotation process so far proved to be the most suitable method. In the conventional process, feldspars are separated from quartz using a cationic collector and hydrofluoric acid as an activator of feldspars. There is no general agreement on the mechanism of fluoride activation of feldspar surfaces and the role of fluoride ions is briefly discussed. The use of HF is no longer acceptable due to environmental and health problems, and a few new reagents schemes have been reported. The available evidence shows that the success of these new reagent schemes is very limited. A new reagent scheme which is environmentally safe and cost effective for the separation of feldspars from quartz is yet to be resolved.

Topsoil for revegetation projects is in demand in many urban areas. In this case history, a large aggregate producer manufactured a topsoil from three waste materials. The topsoil was produced in a 200,000 m2 (50-acre) abandoned gravel pit that still had additional gravel under 10 m (30 ft) of overburden uneconomic to strip directly. The topsoil was produced by rotary mixing of sludge, overburden, and a lime admixture; solar drying; and stripping and stockpiling of the product. A major problem was an increase of topsoil drying times for stripping from 40 to over 100 hours when it was rewet by storms. The problem was solved by a research project that evaluated over 50 formulations and over 20 waste materials. . The final formula dried in 15 hours and contained 3-parts sandy mine spoil, 1-part sewage sludge, and 2 % spent-bed, a granular quick-lime produced during power-plant flue-gas desulfurization.

Engineers and psychologists at the University of Kentucky have developed simulation exercises that teach and test proficiency of mining technical personnel for coping with planned and accidental connections between separate air courses in underground mines. The exercises are based upon investigations of actual mine disasters. The exercises are judged as valuable and interesting training materials by experienced mining personnel. Although these specialists generally perform well on the exercises, potentially fatal errors are not uncommon. The use of such realistic exercises may better prepare miners for preventing and coping with underground mine ventilation emergencies.

A combination of a slurry trench with dewatering successfully controlled groundwater for a large sloped excavation immediately adjacent to the Arkansas River. The Murray Hydro Electric Project required excavation through sand and gravel to bedrock, 85 feet below high water in the River. The perimeter system of deep wells pumping up to 25,000 GPM (1,600 1/sec) lowered the water level to 15 feet (4.6 m) above bedrock. A short soil/bentonite slurry trench near the toe of the slope cut off the residual head. The method cut six weeks from the critical path. Design of the slopes and the dewatering system demanded high safety factors because of risk to existing Lock and Dam No. 7. A localized pocket of soft organic clay was supported by a rock filled bolster. A major flood event was successfully withstood. The method can be applied to large civil excavations and open pit mines.

A system for a continuous determination of the charge volume of grinding media in ball mills and SAG mills has been developed. The system, comprised of a unique measurement device and a model based Kalman filter algorithm, determines grinding media level within a mill and calculates media and liner wear rates. The signal from an instrumented washer mounted on the exterior of the mill shell is used to provide the measurement that, along with mill power and on-line models for media mechanics, result in estimates of mill parameters that can be used in media addition control strategies. Data are presented for a 12.5 x 15 ft. ball mill.

Silane coupling agents have been used in the filler industry for years. One particularly unique feature is the ability of the coupling agents to enhance the adhesion between filler and polymer matrices. This paper will review the use of coupling agents for polymer matrix composite applications and discuss a new approach to coupling agent chemistry, namely, direct formation of a silicon-carbon non-hydrolyzable linkage between glass and coupling agent. The grafted silane monolayers were evaluated by infrared spectroscopy to ascertain their surface coverage and relative stability. Finally, composite specimens were fabricated and their mechanical properties were compared with traditional silane coupling agent treatment.

Part one of this two-part series covers conceptualizing and developing a maintenance information system. It explains what information is necessary to manage such a system. Next month, part two will discuss using this type of system with administrative information, including error and absentee reports as well as open work files. Introduction There is no doubt that quality, timely, and accurate information can make a solid contribution to maintenance cost reduction objectives. Yet, despite obvious benefits, methods being used to acquire information systems are proving costly, frustrating, and often unsuccessful. Those needing the information are disappointed. Mine managers, hoping to reduce costs with quality information, are instead seeing no system, no savings, and massive spending on information endeavors of questionable benefit. Options Any software vendor will happily sell you his program. Numerous mining organizations, having "gone to the cleaners" themselves, will gladly make their programs available to help cover huge trial and error development costs. Any package can only be a generalization. Any program bought from some other organization must undergo numerous modifications to make it work properly. In the process the initial cost is doubled. Many mining maintenance organizations do not know how to go about the task of conceptualizing, developing, installing, and effectively using a maintenance management information system. Consequently, many have hedged their primary responsibility of specifying what information they want, how they will get it, and how they will use it effectively. Into this void have jumped many who claim they can help. But some may not understand the special information needs of maintenance in the mining industry. By default, the whole scene of maintenance information systems has become confused and in need of clarification. A Starting Point Four broad phases are used to organize the steps by which maintenance acquires an effective maintenance management information system and initiates its use. Conceptualization is an identification of needs, factors that influence development, and an assessment of support for the system. Development is a plan of action for bringing the conceptualized information system to life. Consideration is given to the practical aspects of collecting field data, processing it, and converting it into useful information. Implementation consists of those actions by which the newly developed system is integrated into the organization and put in the hands of its personnel so that its value can be derived. Use addresses the means by which personnel use the information to accomplish maintenance improvement objectives. These phases are preceded by establishing the need for the information system. They are followed by a requirement to measure its success (Fig. 1). Conceptualizing the Information System Responsibilities - The information system user must acquire the system best suited for its use. A step-by-step process is essential to avoid many serious problems than can easily occur. The most important step is to clearly identify its objectives and lay out a course of action to achieve those objectives. The major reason for the failure to achieve information objectives is not carrying out this responsibility. Maintenance cannot delegate the task to data processing. Under contract to the Department of Energy, Fluor Mining & Metals, Inc. and Bonner & Moore Associates developed a group of computer models that can be used to simulate single seam dragline operations. These models have been subsequently modified by Fluor for use in multi-seam dragline mining situations. The single seam model analyzes the digging, spoiling, and walking patterns of draglines to identify possible parameter changes to increase productivity. Parameters such as key-cutting, panel width, digout length, and bench height, etc., are analyzed in this process. The models were tested using data from four operating mines. Field demonstrations were performed to correlate computer optimization results with field data. Productivity was greatly enhanced at one mine site by a change in some of the operating parameters. The multi-seam study has as its objective the development of a broad- based mine planning tool which would be used to identify and quantify the different procedures employed in multi-seam dragline mines to increase their productivity. The major problem identified in multi-seam mining is the sequencing of the different stripping and mining operations. The multi-seam model has the same capabilities as the single seam model. In addition, it models up to four seams with three partings per seam. It allows the operation of several draglines at different levels, and analyzes the effect of ramps, rehandling, and ancillary mining equipment.

Until its closure in 1999, the Antler was North America's only active chlorite mine. The mine is located 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Butte in the Silver Star district - an old Montana gold mining district. In 1975, two prospectors searching for talc re-examined a prospect showing a green, fine-grained mineral resembling talc. Following identification and testing of this magnesian chlorite (variety clinochlore), Cyprus Industrial Minerals began processing ore from this deposit in 1976. Chlorite veins ranging up to 30 feet (9 m) in thickness were formed by essentially complete replacement of Precambrian (Archean?) quartzofeldspathic gneiss. Chlorite replacement was controlled by near- vertical faults. These chlorite veins, typically surrounded by envelopes of sericitic alteration, were formed by the introduction of magnesium-rich hydrothermal fluids, probably related to the Proterozoic talc-forming event in southwestern Montana. Luzenac America, Inc. acquired Cyprus' talc operations in 1992, and continued to mine this deposit until the ore body was mined out in March 1999, and the mine was reclaimed. Total sorted ore production from this deposit is about 250,000 short tons (st) (227,000 metric tons [mt]). Chlorite from this deposit was primarily used in ceramic and paint applications.

There axe two essential features of administrative practices in tunnelling in order to provide proper encouragement to innovative and economic tunnelling: first, that there should be a continuity in the decision making at all stages so that the full implications of decisions in early stages of planning and design are understood; second, that there should be appropriate provision for variation so that the greatest possible benefit can be derived from modifying the working scheme in relation to the characteristics of the ground and from study of its behaviour during execution of the work. Millsoft is a computer-simulation software that predicts the performance of large industrial grinding mills. This software surpasses all other tumbling-mill analysis techniques available today because it is based on fundamental laws of physics instead of empirical correlations. Graphical user interface (GUI) forms simplify the specification of the following design and operating parameters: mill diameter, length, speed, charge density and size distribution, lifter material and geometry. All of these parameters are taken into account in the discrete element numerical technique that constitutes the essence of the simulation software. In turn, the software produces a visual animation of grinding-charge motion, predicts mill power and gives the distribution of impact energy. In this paper, a case study of an 8.5-m-(28 ft-) diam SAG mill is used to illustrate the application of Millsoft for mill design and trouble shooting.

The logic and capabilities of a long-term production planning method for open pit mining are presented. This is a new method that can be used to obtain simultaneous solutions to the four interrelated parameters of open pit mining: mine life, specific blocks to be mined each year, the amount of ore and waste to be mined each year, and the ultimate pit limits. An efficient milling cutoff grade can also be obtained through a systematic analysis. A production plan for a real-life gold deposit is given to illustrate the logic and the capabilities of the method.

This paper describes the results of an investigation into the application of a statistical method for the prediction of general air-body methane concentration in longwall coal districts. An important and necessary part of the research was the acquisition of representative monitored mine environmental and coal production data. The monitored data was used to build time series models of general air body methane concentration, air velocity, barometric pressure, coal production and methane drainage variables of differing timescales according to the Box-Jenkins method of time series analysis. The univariate models were used to identify causal relationships between methane concentration and its explanatory variables. Coal production was found to be the dominant variable in the determination of the quantity of methane emitted and where appropriate, multivariate time series models were built in which expressions for methane concentration in terms of coal production were obtained. Finally, forecasts of methane concentration values were generated from the multivariate models to determine their forecasting capabilities.

The ability to understand stress redistribution within a mine allows greater extraction efficiency with reduced safety concerns. Stress redistribution has been examined at the laboratory scale using ultrasonic tomography and numerical modeling using PFC3D. A data acquisition system was built to obtain tomograms as samples are loaded in uniaxial compression. Limestone samples were loaded to failure. Three-dimensional tomograms of the samples correlate to various stress distributions. The tomograms are compared to analytical and PFC3D results.

When John F. Kennedy made this statement, I am sure he was not thinking about the valuation of limestone reserves. However, it is certainly applicable. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate how the discomfort of thought (i.e., the analytical and methodical process performed by a reputable professional) builds the foundation for an opinion that provides assurance as to the value of a property. In its final form, a valuation is nothing more than an opinion. The credence of that opinion is directly proportional to the knowledge of the appraiser and the efforts and judgment extended in developing said opinion. Presented herein are the methodologies for formulating a defensible opinion. Before detailing the valuation process, an overview of the limestone industry is presented along with some historical parameters relating to the industry. Secondly, the most widely used valuation methodologies and a brief discussion of each are presented. Two case studies are then presented, which review actual valuation studies. The paper concludes with how the valuation process should be published in a report format that is defensible from a legal standpoint, bankable from a financial standpoint, and decipherable from a layman's standpoint.

The value of exported nonenergy minerals from the less-developed countries has increased substantially between 1970 and 1985, but their market share relative to world exports has remained stagnant. Of the top twenty minerals exporters, only four are developing countries. Production capacity in the developing countries is shown to be less sensitive to demand downturns than capacity in the developed countries. Two approaches to the management of cyclical minerals demand are given using examples from India and Papua New Guinea. The authors conclude that pro¬tective policies implemented by developing nations have, barring a few exceptions, relatively little impact on the chronic nonfuel minerals oversupply problem.

The southern Florida phosphate deposits that will be mined in the future contain significant amounts of dolomite. Because high MgO levels are undesirable in phosphoric acid production, several flotation schemes for the removal of the dolomite have been attempted. Alternatively, selective flocculation has been suggested as a potential process. A high MgO rock was simulated with a 30:10:60 mixture of apatite, dolomite and silica, respectively. Single mineral selectivity was observed in the apatite-silica and dolomite- silica systems using Polyacrylic acid (PAA) and Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) flocculants, respectively. However, no single mineral selectivity was observed in the apatite-dolomite system using PEO. Heteroflocculation, suspected to be the major reason for the loss of selectivity, was minimized by the addition of a site blocking agent (SBA), consisting of a lower- molecular-weight fraction of PEO. Process parameters such as size reduction schemes, flocculant/SBA dosage and pH were investigated to achieve the desired separation. The selectivity obtained in binary mixed-mineral tests was also achieved in the ternary mixed-mineral system, namely, the apatite-dolomite-silica system. In this report, surface chemical characterization of the samples and their flocculation behavior are discussed.
