THE object of the present paper is to enlarge somewhat on the general principles advanced in my discussion 1 of Mathewson and Phillips' article on. The Recrystallization of Cold-Worked Alpha Brass on Annealing.2 It will also serve as an acknowledgment of Prof. Howe's3 most important remarks on my contribution. In this paper the writer has adopted Prof. Howe's suggestion to substitute the term "germinative temperature" for "critical temperature for grain growth." Instead of being an exact or certain temperature it should be considered that the germinative temperature phenomenon exists throughout a small temperature range. Factors Influencing Fast Growth Phenomena The development of grains of macroscopic size at the germinative temperature should be considered the extreme condition of a general rule. When considered in this light it is not strange that the development of these large grains should be the exception and not the rule. The principal factors influencing the operation of the laws of fast growth temperature are as follows: 1. Rate of heating.

Today numerous ores contain valuable minerals in finely disseminated form; and although the recovery of these fine mineral particles is generally exceedingly difficult, diminishing raw material resources necessitates the recovery of such mineral values. In many systems, the efficiency of recovering fine particles is still extremely low and often fine particles must be discarded as slimes. However, in recent years, various advances have taken place in the recovery of mineral particles in the very fine size range. In this paper, the background and performance of a number of processes for fine particle processing and separation are reviewed and discussed, particularly from the point of view of how fine particle recovery might be improved.

Broadly speaking, the year 1934, one of the most active in the history of the Coast, has been both disappointing and revealing. Of the 18 new oil-producing areas, only two have shown the qualities of a first class oil field. Many of the new areas are discouraging for the horizons exploited, because of close association of gas and salt water, and the absence of any appreciable oil zone. In spite of amply fulfilling the expectations of drilling and geophysical development, the year has fallen far short of the results that normally should be expected from such a campaign. In 1934, the Cockfield zone has been disappointing because its exploration down the dip from the Conroe and Tom Ball fields revealed only such distillate fields as Splendora, Eureka, and the great gas-sand thickness at Katy. The zone proved good at Raccoon Bend. Newer Oligocene and Frio fields in Texas, with the exception of Hastings, were also disappointing, as Van Vleck arid Old Ocean attest. The discovery at Dickinson is not startling. The development of Hastings, Tom Ball, Dickinson and the deep zone at Raccoon Bend will be slow. A new strip of prospective territory of minor importance lying inland from the Conroe trend was opened by the Kittrell discovery. During the year 206 unproductive wildcats were drilled on the Texas Coast, compared with 207 during 1933 and 141 during 1932. During 1934, there were 835 oil and gas wells and 229 dry holes drilled in proved fields, in contrast with 1100 in 1933 and 512 in 1932. The past year's production was actually 60,868,260 bbl., or 2,020,764 bbl. less than in 1933. The present annual rate of Texas Gulf Coast production is about 61 million barrels per year. The daily Texas Coast production decreased 5537 bbl., or 3.2 per cent, during the year. The total daily production at the end of the year was 173,598 bbl. Eighteen wildcats opened up new oil and gas pools during 1934, so that there are now 78 active pools and 3753 producing oil wells. The production of the average well is 45 bbl. per day. The price of crude oil was almost uniform in 1934,

This paper describes a laboratory study of causes of external casing corrosion and the test work that led to the use of oxygen scavengers to prevent this attack. External casing failures are classified as water-line, casing-casing, collar and body failures. A corrosion mechanism based on principles of differential oxygen availability is developed that is consistent with facts known about each kind of failure. The field use of oxygen scavengers is depicted as a direct result of the laboratory study. A part of the paper is devoted to reporting on the field use of hydra-zine to control external casing corrosion. Results of field measurements made over a period of several years are presented as evidence of the efectiveness of the hydrazine treatment. The first conclusion reached is that the use of hydrazine materially reduces the cathodic protection requirements for treated wells. This result is interpreted to mean that a reduction is taking place in the amount of corrosion on the casing. Results indicate also that hydrazine shows its greatest usefulness within the first 12 to 18 months after a well is completed when pitting corrosion is likely to be most active. INTRODUCTION According to surveys sponsored by the National Association of Corrosion Engineers,' the cost of repairing casing leaks caused by external corrosion may exceed $4 million per year. In addition, well damage and lost production resulting from casing leaks probably costs the petroleum industry an additional $5 to $6 million per year. Concern about the cost of external casing corrosion led to an extensive laboratory study of factors causing this external corrosion and to the development of a new approach to its prevention. This paper presents a discussion of various causes of external casing corrosion, details of laboratory studies and the results of the field use of an oxygen scavenger in well cementing fluids to prevent the external corrosion of oil-string casing. Measurements on test wells over a period of several years show that cathodic-protection current requirements are greatly reduced when hydrazine is used in cementing mud. Reduction of current requirements can be interpreted to mean that removal of oxygen by hydrazine has greatly suppressed corrosion cells on the external surface of the casing and thereby, has reduced corrosion. To date, hydrazine has been used by the Standard Oil Co. of California in more than 200 well completions. KINDS OF CASING FAILURES A survey of a large number of casing leaks disclosed four types of external casing failures — water-line, casing-casing, collar and body failures. These types are identified largely by their location on the casing. Water-line failures are found just below the surface of water or mud in the casing annulus. Casing-casing failures occur on the oil string just below the shoe of the surface string. Collar failures are found in the threaded ends of casing joints where they are screwed into casing collars. Body failures may occur at any point on the body of a casing joint. Ex- amples of each kind of failure have some of the general characteristics that are shown in Fig. 1. Water-line failures usually result in the circumferential severance of an oil-string casing. The corrosive action causing a water-line failure usually is sharply defined and is limited to a short length of the casing. Casing-casing failures usually are accompanied by pitting corrosion distributed around the oil-string casing for distances up to 100-ft below the shoe of the surface string. Casing-casing failures may also sever the casing. Collar failures seem to start on the first thread at the bottom of recesses between collar and casing joint. Corrosion proceeds across the threads by what appears to be a normal pitting mechanism. Both casing and collar are severely attacked. Body failures are the result of highly localized pitting at any point on a casing wall. Besides the pit that perforates a casing, a large number of other pits usually are found along one side of the casing joint. The pits occasionally are filled with corrosion products consisting largely of oxides and sulfides.' Frequently, the mill scale is largely intact on the rest of the casing. Examination of a casing failure does not always reveal the cause of the failure. Frequently, the necessary details are destroyed when the failure occurs. For example, formation water flowing through a perforation at high velocity may enlarge the hole and destroy any remaining evidence of the cause of the failure. One way to obtain undistorted information about a failure is to study the nature of other pits on the casing in the vicinity of the failure. A study of such pits frequently suggests that they are characteristic of an attack resulting from the differential availability of molecular oxygen.

With the advent of underground heating operations, interest has developed in the alteration of rock properties by high-temperature treatment. In the present work a number of sandstones were heated to temperatures in the range of 400°C to 800°C under both atmospheric and simulated reservoir pressures. Pertneabilities increased by at least 50 per cent and sonic velocities and breaking strerlgths decreased by an equivalent amount. Differential thermal expansion and other reactions of constituent min-era1 grains are the causes of these alterations. INTRODUCTION In the underground combustion of petroleum reservoirs, temperatures of the order of 600C are reported to have been reached in the combustion zone.' At this temperature rocks are subject to extensive thermal alteration. Temperatures of this magnitude and higher may also occur in subsurface formations when subjected to bottom-hole heating, thermal drilling operations, and underground nuclear explosions. Temperatures of this magnitude might also be generated by conventional rock drilling methods at points of bit-tooth contact. In earlier work, the permanent deformation of rocks resulting from heating was reported. Major structural damage of rocks occurs due to differential thermal expansion of mineral constituents. A number of mineral alterations including crystal inversions, loss of water of crystallization and dissociation, may also contribute to changes in physical structure and properties of rock. In the present work, samples of three typical sandstones were heated to several temperatures up to a maximum of 800C and then allowed to cool to room temperature. Heating was done under both atmospheric pressure and simulated reservoir pressure conditions. Physical properties of the samples were measured before and after heating and comparisons made. Measured properties included permeability, sonic velocity, breaking strength and fracture index. Changes in physical properties were compared to changes in mineralogical characteristics as determined by thin-section. X-ray diffraction and chemical tests. EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE Two outcrop sandstones (Bandera and Berea) and one sub-surface sandstone (St. Peter) were selected for the tests. These samples have a wide ranee in composition and physical properties as shown in Table 1. The first series of tests was made on 2-in. diameter by 5-in. long test specimens. Test specimens used in all later work were 3/4-in. diameter by 1 1/8-in. long, this being the specimen size required for heating at simulated reservoir pressures. After careful washing, the cores were oven dried at 100 ± 5C for a minimum of 24 hours before the tests were run. Test specimens were heated in an electric furnace at a constant rate of temperature increase of 3C per minute. When maximum temperature of the run was reached, the sample was allowed to soak for one hour. The furnace was then cooled to room temperature at the same rate of 3C per minute. The entire heating operation was designed for reproducibility without subjecting the test specimens to excessive thermal shock. For samples heated under simulated reservoir pressures, a pressure cell designed by Dean was used (Fig. 1).3 The core sample was inserted into a thin-walled (0.006 to 0.01-in.) copper cup which was then mounted in a high-pressure cell. Provisions were made for the application of internal pore pressure as well as confining pressure. Tests showed that the thin-walled copper cup closed tightly around the core and satisfactorily transmitted confining pressure to the core. The core was heated by placing the entire cell into the electric furnace. The heating program was the same as that used in the atmospheric pressure runs: tempera-ture rise of 3C per minute to maximum temperature of the test, soaking at maximum temperature for one hour, and cooling at a rate of approximately 3C per minute. The cell was designed to withstand 5,000 psi at 1,000C. However, since it was considered likely that repeated heating and cooling would in time weaken the steel, 2,000 psi at 850C was set as a working limit. In the present series of tests, the pore pressure was held constant at 750 psi and the confining pressure at 1.500 psi. The pressure source was a high-pressure nitrogen tank. The two pressures were controlled manually but are accurate well within ± 50 psi.

Periclase-type oxides were examined microscopically after being exposed to siliceous liquids. The rate of grain growth was found to be inversely proportional to the grain diameter. Grain growth proceeds more rapidly at higher temperatures, but is retarded by increasing liquid contents. aMag-nesiowiistites with higher MgO contents grow less rapidly than those with higher FeO contents. The growth rate is reduced by the presence of a second solid phase. The silica-containing liquid penetrates as a film between the individual magnesiowus tite grains. This is independent of time, temperature, amount of liquid, or the MgO/ Fe0 ratio. When present, olivine and spinel-type phases can provide a solid-to-solid &apos;&apos;bridge" between magnesioustite grains. THIS paper presents the results of a study of the microstructures of periclase type oxides in the presence of a silicate liquid. The purpose was to learn more about the effect of service factors such as 1) time, 2) temperature, and 3) liquid content upon A) grain growth, and B) liquid location among the solid grains. This study was prompted by the fact that periclase refractories are known to have very little solid-to-solid contact when the phases which are present are limited to periclase and liquid. Such a micro-structure gains industrial significance because it permits fracture during service when stresses are applied at high temperatures. The details of ceramic microstructures have not received extensive attention. This is in contrast to the extensive attention given to a) the phase relationships pertaining to refractory compositions, and b) the details of the microstructures of comparable metallic materials. A brief review will be made of the pertinent phase relationships and microstructural considerations in general, as well as of refractory compositions. a) Phase Relationships. This investigation was limited to those compositions in which (Mg, Fe)O was the solid phase. MgO and FeO form a complete series of solid solutions. Pure MgO has the name of periclase. The related FeO structure is called wustite. Both have the NaC1-type structure: however, wustite possesses a cation deficiency so that the true composition is Fe<10 even in the presence of metallic iron. The phase relationships involving solid (Mg, Fe)O and a silicate liquid are shown in Fig. 1. In this case. the liquid is saturated with (Mg, Fe)o. There-fore its SiOz content is below that encountered in orthosilicate liquids. As a consequence the liquid phase specie:; are primarily the following ions: and 0-&apos; plus occasional Fe+ ions. Two features are of importance: a) the liquid contains relatively small species and b) the liquid contains large quantities of the same species as the solid. viz., Fig. 2 shows the system, FeO-SiOz, which will be used in some of the discussions that follow. This diagram is the right side, vertical section of Fig. 1. Here, as pre\iously, the composition at the FeO end of the diagram is nonstoichiometric, varying from Feo.950 when the liquid oxide is in contact with the solid iron, to about Fe 0, when the solid oxide is in equilibrium with an atmosphere of equal proportions of CO and C02 at the solidus temperature. The Fe/O ratio will be maintained in wustite in the presence of SiO,. However, the FeM/Fe++ ratio in the liquid will be lower because of the effect OIF the SiO, on the activity of the FeO. With the addition of MgO to wustite, the over-all composition (IvZg, Fe)@, has a value of x lying between 0.9 and 1.0 when the COz/CO ratio is 1.0&apos;. b) Microstructures. In general, published attention to refractory microstructures has been directed toward the phase analyses that accompany compositional variations. This is illustrated by Harvey6 in his work on silica brick and by wells7 in his work on periclase brick. In each case, a series of altered zones is encountered which provides a sequence of phase associations. If due consideration is given to reaction kinetics, such an examination reveals phases that are compatible with equilibrium studies. Admittedly, however, it is often necessary to determine more complicated polycomponent systems to account for all the phases present.8 Relatively little attention has been given to microstructural geometry in ceramic materials. Certainly less attention has been given to this aspect of ceramic microstructures than to the size, shape, and distribution of the constituent phases in metals. His recent election as an institute Director to represent the iron and copper country therefore brings to the Board a man long known throughout the area that he represents and well acquainted with the history of the Institute. Mr. Salsich is a native of the area in which his professional life has been spent, having been horn at Hartland. Wis., and graduating from the state university&apos;s college of engineering in 1901. A call had come to the college from the Lake Superior Consolidated Iron Mines, at Duluth.

5.3-1. General Public Resistance to Strip Mining. Surface (strip) mining is the oldest recorded method of extracting coal and other minerals from the earth. This method of mining completely alters the topography of the earth&apos;s surface, leaving an area of more or less parallel ridges or of peaked mounds of the materials which overlay the mineral seam. It destroys all original vegetation and provides materials for new type soil. During the early years the acreage mined by this method was small, land was plentiful, and with a growing young nation no thought was given to the restoration of the disturbed areas to some form of productive use. Early in the present century the development of steam shovels and drag-lines made it possible to remove thicker overburden to recover the products. With the deeper digging, the size of the disturbed areas increased. With this increase in the size of equipment and the improvement of blasting techniques, mining was expanded into more prominent locations and to areas of more valuable land. The more progressive operators became aware of the need to reclaim those areas for some productive use. Electric shovels with capacities of up to 200 cu yd and draglines with capacities of 145 cu yd, capable of uncovering products over 100 ft below the surface, are now in use. Combined with the increase in the size of equipment, the expansion of contour mining or rim stripping in the mountainous areas has focused public attention on the need for a sound reclamation program for all disturbed areas. APPEARANCE. After mining, the areas consist of varying percentages of rock, shale, slate, and soil material devoid of all plant and animal life. Unless a definite reclamation plan is carried out, many of the mined areas will remain bare for a period of years. The topography of the area is completely altered. What may have been level to rolling land in cultivation, in grass, or in timber is thrown up into a series of ridges or mounds.

Since production curtailment for other than engineering reasons is gradually disappearing, and more and more wells are now producing at capacity and showing declining production rates, it was considered timely to present a brief review of the development of decline-curve analysis during the past three or four decades. Several of the commoner types of decline curves were discussed in detail and the mathematical relationships between production rate, time, cumulative production and decline percentage for each case were studied. The well-known loss-ratio method was found to be an extremely valuable tool for statistical analysis and extrapolation of various types of curves. A tentative classification of decline curves, based on their loss ratios, was suggested. Some new graphical methods were introduced to facilitate estimation of the future life and the future production of producing properties where curves are plotted on semilogarithmic paper. To facilitate graphical extrapolation of hyperbolic-type decline curves, a series of decline charts was proposed, which will make straight-line extrapolation of both rate-time and rate-cumulative curves possible. Introduction During the period of severe production curtailment, which is now behind us, production-decline curves lost most of their usefulness and popularity in prorated areas because the production rates of all wells, except those in the stripper class, were constant or almost constant. While production-decline curves were thus losing in importance for estimating reserves, an increasing reservoir consciousness and a better understanding of reservoir performance developed among petroleum engineers. This fact, together with intelligent interpretation and use of electric logs, core-analysis data, bottom-hole pressure behavior and physical characteristics of reservoir fluids, eliminated a considerable part of the guesswork in previous volumetric methods and put reserve estimates, based on this method, on a sound scientific basis&apos; At the same time, a number of ingenious substitutes were developed for the regular production-decline curve, which made it possible to obtain an independent check on volumetric estimates in appraisal work, even though the production rates were constant. with the now steadily increasing demand for oil to supply the huge requirements of this global war, proration for reasons of than prevention of underground waste is gradually disappearing. More and more wells are, or will be, producing at capacity or at their optimum rates, as determined by sound engineering practice. With this trend, the character of producing wells seems to regain, more or less, its "individuality," and the old and familiar decline curve appears to have had a comeback as a valuable tool in the hands of the petroleum engineer. It may be timely, therefore, to retrace the development of decline-curve analysis in the past by presenting a brief chronological review of bulletins and papers published during the past three or four decades, which have

THE year 1935 witnessed one of the world&apos;s oldest industries-gold mining-attain the stature of a billion dollar business. Preliminary estimates indicate that somewhat over 30,000,000 oz. of gold was pro-duced, the largest output ever recorded and exceeding the previous year by more than 11 per cent. Of this huge total the Witwatersrand field produced about 10,800,000 oz., compared with 10,480,000 oz. in 1934. Russia was apparently the stellar performer, and from incomplete data it appears that between five and five and a half million ounces were produced by the Soviets compared with 4,200,000 last year and 2,814,000 in 1933. The United States nosed Canada out of third place with a production of 3,546,000 oz. against 2,916,000 in 1934, while Canada increased her total from 2,965,000 to 3,291,000 oz. Similarly, gains of lesser magnitude were made in Australia, the Gold Coast and other countries. As a result of great activity in developing outlying areas on the Rand, and the great number of new companies building mills in Canada, Australia, the Gold Coast and the United States, the years 1936 and 1937 should see new high records, as these new producers will more than offset any decline in the older properties. The whole world has become "gold conscious" during the past three years. It has been the subject of innumerable articles by economists and others, but, unfortunately, because of their lack of actual mining knowl-edge, they have treated the production of gold as a static affair, ignoring geological and technical factors. It is hardly necessary to draw attention to the fact that the world&apos;s gold-mining industry was slowly but steadily shrinking in importance, owing to the gradual depletion of known deposits that were profitable to work at costs existing prior to 1929. The International Geological Congress at Pretoria and the League of Nations Committee drew atten-tion to the estimates of the mining experts of the various governments predicting a steady falling off in world production. Internal friction studies on annealed and cold-worked pure silver and alloys of silver with 4.5 atomic pct each of Cd, Sn, and Sb are reported. Small amounts of cold work, introduced by stretching pure silver, decrease the internal friction; large amounts of cold work, by wire drawing, cause this decreased internal friction to rise. Results of severol anneoling histories on the room-temperature in-ternal friction indicate a rather complex recovery and recrystallization behavior. A rather system-atic alloy effect is observed for the elements of Period V-B in silver in both the annealed and cold-worked states. DURING recent years internal friction measurements at very small stress levels have been interpreted in terms of structural models and mechanisms occurring within the metal or alloy.These measurements have been made over wide ranges of frequency of vibration and of temperature. While the effects of impurities, alloying, and plastic deformation have been studied by numerous investigators, no investigations of the effect of a series of solutes related by their position in the Periodic Table on a given solvent seem to have been reported. Unmodified disilicide coatirigs were applied to sheet-tensile specimens ofCb-Dg3 and Mo-TZM veJractovy- metal alloys. Coating thickness, degree of coating-substrate interdiffusion, and specimen geonzetry (notched and plain were included in the variables studied. Tensile tests were made to determine the ductile-lo-brittle transition temperature. The disilicide coating modestly increased the transition temperatlre of TZM, but had no effect on 043. Neither material condition (recrystallized or stress-velieved) nor specimen geometry (notched or unnotched) significantly altered the effects of coatings on the transilion temperatures of. the alloys. Cracks in the brittle coatings did not propagate into the substrate, and fracture modes appeared to be the same for both un-coated and coated specimens. MOST potential structural applications for refractory metals and alloys involve exposures to oxidizing environments at elevated temperatures. The general lack of oxidation resistance of these metals will require protective coatings to allow fulfillment of their potential. Currently preferred coatings for the oxidation protection of refractory metals are brittle intermetallic aluminides or silicides. These are typically formed on the surface of the refractory-metal substrate by a diffusion reaction between the substrate and a gaseous or liquid medium that is rich in aluminum or silicon. Because of the brittleness of these coatings, they will sustain no plastic deformation at low temperatures. They are frequently cracked by cooling from the coating temperature because of the thermal-expansion mismatch with the substrate alloy. Even if they survive cooling intact, they crack rather than sustain deformation under load at low temperatures. Thus, when a coated refractory metal is strained beyond the elastic limit of the coating at low temperatures, the mechanical environment of the substrate would include both static and dynamic cracks. These might be expected to influence the flow and fracture behavior of the substrate. This could be manifested in an altered fracture mode and/or an increase in the normal ductile-to-brittle transition temperature of the refractory-metal substrate. This paper presents the results of a research program that was conducted to determine the influence of the presence of a brittle surface coating on the low-strain-rate tensile behavior of typical refractory metals at low temperatures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Material Preparation. Thirty-mil-thick sheets of molybdenum TZM alloy (Mo-0.5Ti-O.1Zr) and colum-bium D43 alloy (Cb-IOW-1Zr-O.1C) were obtained commercially. These alloys were selected as substrate materials representing two classes of materials important in current refractory-metal technology. The TZM was in the stress-relieved condition, and exhibited a heavily fibered grain structure. The D43 had been processed by the duPont "optimum" fabrication schedule,&apos; and exhibited slightly elongated grains typical of this process. Tensile specimens of two geometries were prepared from these materials: 1) plain specimens with 0.2-in.-wide 1.0-in.-long gage sections; 2) specimens similar to above, but with a 0.06-in.-diam hole drilled in the center of the gage section, providing a stress concentration factor, Kt, of 2.5. The "notch" geometry was selected to represent a typical condition of a rivet hole or other geometric discontinuities as might be encountered in various applications. Machined specimens were degreased, with a final rinse in acetone, prior to the application of coatings. Specimens of each substrate and configuration were pack-siliconizedin a particulate mixture of 80 pct A1203, 17 pct Si, and 3 pct NaF. Specimens were embedded in this mix (contained in graphite retorts) and coated in an electrically heated argon-atmosphere furnace under time-temperature conditions to effect nominal 1- and 3-mil-thick silicide coatings: Coating Thickness, mils Thermal Treatment 0.6 to 1.4 24 hr at 982°C 2.4 to 3.2 48 hr at 1093°C Coating kinetics were similar for both the TZM and D43 substrates. These treatments had little or no visible effect on the substrate microstructure as determined by optical metallography. The coatings on TZM were essentially single-phase unmodified disilicides, while those on D43 showed substantial evidence of modification by proportionate reaction with the respective substrate elements or phases, as shown in Fig. 1. It was recognized that these coatings might not be particularly desirable regarding protective capability. The creep of 043 was studied over the temperature range 1650" to 3200°F and over the stress range 3000 to 44,000 psi. The steady-state creep rate over this range of stress and temperature can be expressed by the equation where A is a constant, is the stress, and is -0.8 x 103 psi-&apos;. Over a narrow range of stress variations c0 a and for this proportionality n varies from 3 to 30 in accordance with the relation n = aB. Above about 2400° F, H, the apparent activation energy for creep, is 110,000 cal per mole, a value about equal to that estimated for self-diffusion in this alloy. Below 2400°F, H increases with decreasing temperature reaching a value of -125,000 cal per mole at 1700° F. In this temperature region, H appears to be a function of the interstitial concentration of the alloy. MOST of the detailed creep studies of dispersion strengthened metals have been concerned with metals having fcc structures. However, there are a number of important refractory alloys with bcc structures that derive part of their high temperature strength from an interstitial phase and whose creep behavior has not been well defined. This paper describes the creep behavior of the bcc alloy, D43, over the temperature range 1650" to 3200°F (0.4 to 0.7 Thm) and over the stress range 3000 to 44,000 psi. In addition to colum-bium, this alloy contains 10 pct W. 1 pct Zr, and sufficient carbon (-0.1 pct) to form a carbide dispersion throughout the matrix of the alloy. The effects of variations in temperature and stress on the steady-state creep rate of this alloy are presented in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Creep tests were made in a vacuum of 106 torr under constant tensile stress conditions using a Full-man-type lever arm.&apos; Creep specimens were machined from 0.020-in. D43 sheet (grain size -5 x l0-4 in.) processed in a duplex condition (solution annealed -2900°F, 40 pct reduction in area, aged 2600°F). The specimens were tested in this condition without further heat treatment. Specimen extensions over 1-in. gage lengths were continuously recorded using a high temperature strain gage extensometer. Differential temperature and stress measurements were used to determine temperature and stress dependencies of the creep rate. Activation energies were calculated from the changes in strain rate induced by abrupt shifts in the temperature during constant stress creep tests. The 100°F temperature shifts used in most of the activation energy determinations required 15 to 90 sec depending upon the temperature at which the shift was made. The dependence of strain rate on stress was determined by measuring the change in strain rate for incremental stress reductions during constant temperature tests. It has been shown that columbium-base alloys such as D43 are susceptible to contamination by gaseous interstitial elements during vacuum heat treatments.&apos; In this regard, it is unlikely that these alloys can be heat treated without some loss or gain of interstitial elements despite the precautions taken to control the heat treating environment. However, several factors suggest that changes in interstitial concentrations of the specimens during testing did not affect the results presented in this paper. First, the dependence of the creep rate on the stress or temperature determined during the course of a single creep test showed no variations with the duration of the test. A variation would be expected if a loss or gain in interstitial concentration during the course of the test affected results. In addition, precautions taken during this investigation to minimize interstitial contamination by wrapping the gage lengths of the specimens with various foils2 (Mo, Ta, W) did not produce a detectable change in the stress and temperature dependencies relative to the unwrapped specimens. The averages of duplicate analyses for carbon and oxygen in several specimens determined before and after creep testing are listed in Table I. The combined nitrogen and hydrogen concentrations which were ordinarily less than 50 ppm did not change in a detectable way with creep testing. The analyses show that only minor changes in carbon concentration occurred during creep testing except for specimen 4. This specimen which was tested at 3100°F lost a significant amount of its carbon concentration to the vacuum environment. Specimen 1 gained 100 ppm of O, while specimens 2, 3, and 4, which were tested at progressively higher temperatures, lost increasing portions of their initial oxygen concentrations during testing. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The Temperature Dependence of the Creep Rate. The apparent activation energy for creep, H, was de-rived from creep curves similar to that shown in Fig. 1. Steady-state creep was rapidly attained at the beginning of the test and with each change in temperature. This behavior suggests that the alloy rapidly attains a stable structure with each shift in temperature or that the structure is constant throughout the test. Since the dispersion will tend to stabilize the structure, the latter is probably the case. The activation energy was found to be independent of the direction of the temperature shift and the magnitude of the shift (50" or 100°F). The relative costs of heating a reservoir by steam injection and by combustion have been examined. The comparison was based on a model similar to that proposed by Chu.&apos; The cost of boiler feed water, the price of fuel, pressure and plant capacity were parameters in determin-ing the costs of air compression and steam generation. The analyses compare the cost of heating to the same radius by the two methods. Results suggest that the two primary factors for comparison are the price of fuel and the amount of crude burned during underground combustion. The cost of fuel has a greater effect on the cost of heat from steam than it does on its cost by combustion. As a result, analyses indicate that when the price of fuel is low, steam may be unequivocally cheaper than air. The influence of heat loss is such, however, that as the heated radius increases combustion becomes relatively more competitive depending upon the amount of crude burned. This implies that steam may be cheaper for small stimulation jobs (huff and puff) but combustion may be more economically attractive for heating large areas (flooding). INTRODUCTION Use of thermal methods of recovery is an accepted fact today. After an induction period of several years, processes are being widely used that involve reservoir heating to augment recovery. Of the several techniques, steam injection and forward combustion appear to be destined to dominate the field. Although the objectives of both are the same, the basic differences between generating heat in situ and injecting heat after surface generation influence the cost in different ways. This study compares the cost of heating a reservoir either by steam injection or by forward combustion. There has been no consideration of recovery. Presumably, recovery from the swept region would be high in either case. The sole consideration was the cost of heating to the same radial distance by either process. PROCEDURE THE MODEL The basis for comparison was a mathematical model similar to that used by Chu&apos; for combustion. The model simulates a radial heat wave in two-dimensional cylindricaI coordinates. It includes heat generation, conduction and convection within the reservoir and conduction in the bounding formations. Thus, heat losses from the formation are considered. Three significant modifications were made. 1. Equal logarithmic increments rather than equal increments were used for the mesh spacing in the r direction. By this technique large distances were simulated with relatively few mesh spaces. 2. A backward difference approximation to the convection term was used to avoid troublesome oscillations which result from a central difference approximation when the convection term is large. 3. The radial increments of the combustion zone motion were not necessarily uniquely related to the mesh configuration. The cumbersome step function introduced by the heat of vaporization of steam was circumvented by assuming the enthalpy of the steam to be a linear function of temperature between reservoir temperature and steam temperature. This is equivalent to assuming an average heat capacity numerically equal to the difference between the enthalpy of saturated steam and the enthalpy of water at reservoir temperature divided by the difference between the two temperatures. Heat losses obtained by this model are in essential agreement with those obtained by the analytical solution of Rubenshtein.&apos; A detailed description of the model is presented in the Appendix. Using the model, the times required to heat to particular radial distances were obtained as a function of injection rate and other physical parameters. For the steam case, injected fluid was assumed to be saturated steam at pressures of either 500, 1,000 or 1,500 psia. The corresponding temperatures are 467, 544 and 596F, respectively. Thickness ranged from 10 to 50 ft and injection rate ranged from 100,000 to 1 million Ib/D. Reservoir and overburden temperatures at the injection well were assumed to be that of saturated steam at the injection pressure. The effect of maintaining the overburden temperature at the well at a different temperature (initial reservoir temperature) was examined with no significant change in behavior. The influence of wellbore heat losses for the steam case was determined in the following manner. The rates of heat loss as a function of time were estimated using an approach similar to that suggested by Ramey." he data were based on injection through 2%-in. tubing in 7-in. casing. Integration of these data over the entire iniection period yielded the total heat loss. Total heat losses were then corrected to their equivalents in steam (this number resulted from dividing the total heat loss by the latent heat). This was considered additional steam required to accomplish the reservoir heating and the total cost was increased accordingly.

A metal or alloy finds its place in commerce in proportion to its ability to serve certain purposes better and more economically than other materials. While there is some overlapping of the fields of application of the various metals under discussion in this symposium, each one has its uses for which it is especially adapted. While aluminum is the most recent of the metals to enter the field, the development of the industry has been based on its peculiar properties, by virtue of which new uses for non-ferrous metals have been created. There has been substitution of this new metal for other members of the group but there has been a far greater development in entirely new fields. In common with the other non-ferrous metals, aluminum is resistant to atmospheric corrosion. It also withstands the action of many of the common chemical reagents, strongly alkaline substances being the notable exceptions. The outstanding properties on which the application of aluminum is based are its low specific gravity and its ease of fabrication into the forms in which it is used. It is noteworthy that this property of specific lightness is retained in all the commercial aluminum-base alloys. This statement does not apply to aluminum bronze; this is more properly a copper-base alloy, since aluminum enters into its composition to the extent of only about 10 per cent. None of the commercial casting alloys of aluminum has a density exceeding that of the parent metal by more than about 10 per cent., and some are actually lighter. In the so-called "strong alloys" of aluminum in which strengths comparable to that of mild steel are developed by heat treatment, the greatest increase in density is only slightly more than 3 per cent., and one of these, also, is lighter than aluminum. This property of lightness combined with the desirable mechanical properties of the alloys, makes aluminum especially suited for parts of moving assemblies where saving in power, as well as a decrease in stresses resulting from inertia and vibration, are of importance.

In order to comprehend the help and information that may be expected from electrical prospecting, it is necessary to have at least a general knowledge of the methods and principles involved in preparing and interpreting results obtained in the field. Electrical prospecting is rather complicated, both in theory and practice, and in order to make a brief description clear to the practical mining man it has been necessary to idealize and generalize the problems, at the risk of having such simplification criticized by the theoretical man. This simplification must not be misinterpreted as showing a lack of theoretical knowledge. For its operation, electrical prospecting mainly depends on the fact that most metallic ores conduct an electric current much more readily than barren rocks. If an electric current flows through a block of ground within which a body of chalcopyrite is enclosed in country rock of schist, the current will find less resistance to its passage through the chalcopyrite than through the schist, even though the passage through the latter be much shorter. This is because the longer path through the chalcopyrite offers less resistance, owing to the superior electrical conductivity of the chalcopyrite (Fig. 1). The good conductor, chalcopyrite, in the poor conductor, schist, thus attracts the current and deflects the normal flow far outside the conduct-

THE little coal mine at Otsego, in the Winding Gulf field of southern West Virginia was dying. In the history of coal mining thousands of mines have been successful at first, but usually a change occurred and profits ceased. Often be change was so gradual and extended over such a length of time that the fundamental causes did not stand out in sharp relief and their significance was not realized. Studies often reveal that the cause for failure was in the arteries that connect the producing places with the mine entrance. Profits continued so long as the working places were close to the tipple and while the thrill of newness aid ease of access resulted in effective supervision from day to day. The air- way and haulageway, the wire line and manway, may have been sufficient when the distance from the entrance was a few hundred feet, but were inadequate when this was extended for thousands of feet.

IN six years the construction of Hoover Dam and the power plants probably will have reached the operating stage and this vast new source of power will then be continuously available for industry. The height of the darn will be 580 ft. and the average annual flow of the Colorado River is calculated at approximately 24,000 cu.ft. per sec. If this full head and average flow can be maintained the year round, about one million horsepower will be generated. The U. S. Reclamation engineers, taking into consideration the probable range in flow and head, have set the figure for power contracts at 660,000 firm horsepower, which can be assured at all times of the year. During the months of heavy run-off of water from the Colorado River Basin the power plants should be able to generate the full 1,000,000 hp. capacity of the power plants, so there will be 340,000 excess or secondary horsepower. The cost of firm power at the switchboard will be close to 2.15 mills per kw.-hr., equal to $14.05 per hp.-yr., and the cost of the secondary or off-peak power will be close to 0.8 mills per kw.-hr., or $5.22 per hp.-yr. In no place in the country can such cheap power be obtained today. The electrochemical industry is in a state of flux because the power costs from its old sources have increased so much (to $30 per hp.-yr. at Niagara) that the industries have had to seek new sources, so they have gone to Canada and Norway and built new plants.

ALL electrical geophysical methods depend for their operation upon the effects produced by the flow of an electric current. By studying these effects it is possible to predict the general axis of current flow. The greater flow of current is in the path of greatest, effective conductivity; and since the effective conductivity of a mineralized zone is different from that of its surrounding envelope (usually much greater), it is possible to locate such a mineralized zone by the distribution of current. Due consideration must be given, of course, to geological structure, to type of mineralization, and to other factors. A number of methods are used to cause this flow of current, and various methods are available for detecting the presence of such current flow and for studying its effects. In a rather detailed way, this paper will discuss the theoretical and practical phases of the inductive methods of geophysical prospecting. ELECTROMAGNETIC GENERATION OF AN ELECTROMOTIVE FORCE The inductive method is so named because the current flowing in the conductor is obtained by electromagnetic induction, instead of by the use of ground electrodes through which a current is passed as in the applied potential systems, or by direct contact with the orebody. An alternating current flowing in a coil will create an electromagnetic field around the coil. This field will have the same frequency as the current and will radiate or travel outward from the coil in closed magnetic or flux circuits: These flux circuits (in air or a homogeneous medium) will be perpendicular to the plane of the coil and will extend or travel outward with uniform velocity in every direction. Maximum field exists in the plane of the coil. Such a coil used for transmitting or as the "energizer" will exhibit similar figure-eight characteristics to those exhibited by the direction-finding coil which will be described in detail later.
