Estimated world production of natural and synthetic industrial diamond was about 630 million carats in 2004. Natural industrial diamond deposits have been found in more than 35 countries, and synthetic industrial diamond is produced in at least 10 countries. About 80 percent of the global output was produced in Ireland, Japan, Russia, South Africa and the United States. Russia and the United States are the world’s leading producers of synthetic industrial diamond. In 2004, the two U.S. synthetic producers, one in Pennsylvania and the other in Ohio, had an estimated output of 250million carats. Also in 2004, nine U.S. firms manufactured polycrystalline diamond (PCD) from synthetic diamond grit and powder.

The applicability of SEM/EDS techniques to particle-by-particle analysis of respirable coal dust is evaluated. It is demonstrated that the correction procedures needed to account for the failure of most EDS systems to detect light elements (especially carbon) become unreliable for particles in the respirable size range (< 10 µm). Other serious limitations arise from x-ray counting errors for coal particles with low but significant mineral content and particle counting errors for liberated mineral matter.

The US Bureau of Mines investigated germanium and gallium extraction from an ore containing 0.089% Ge and 0.036% Ga. While previous researchers concluded that a reducing agent, such as SO2 is needed to extract germanium and gallium from such ore, this research showed that high extractions (87% Ge, 97% Ga) were possible using sulfuric acid alone, if the acid concentration were properly controlled. This control was achieved using a two-stage countercurrent leach circuit. Microprobe analyses revealed that the non-extracted germanium is in solid solution with quartz, and therefore cannot be leached with SO2 or sulfuric acid.

To increase its product competitiveness in the foreign market, Samarco Mineracão S/A has developed, at its pilot plant, high-MgO pellets for performing direct reduction simulation tests. Additives, such as dolomitic lime and magnesite, were used for increasing the pellet MgO content. Comparative direct-reduction simulation tests were conducted in Samarco and foreign laboratories. The results show that direct-reduction pellets with satisfactory metallurgical properties can be produced and successfully processed at increased temperatures in direct reduction furnaces.

Copper dump and heap leaching operations are conducted worldwide for production of substantial amounts of copper Such dumps and heaps contain appreciable amounts of other potentially valuable elements such as gold, Iron, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, silver, titanium, and uranium. Except for uranium, recovery of these elements has not been attempted to any significant extent However, such recovery merits attention based upon availability of existing chemical techniques. This paper presents some thoughts on possible techniques together with opportunities for commercial applications.

Maptek I-Site laser scanning expertise and software technology is being used to map the geology and layout of the deepest underground laboratory to be established in the U.S. The Deep Underground Science and Engineering Lab (DUSEL) in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead, SD, will provide for scientific studies in particle and nuclear physics, geology, hydrology, geo-engineering, biology and biochemistry. Cuttability and borability assessment methods in rock and coal are reviewed. TBM, roadheader and coal cutting machine boring rates can be predicted from a knowledge of machine, intact rock property and rock mass parameters. Results that were obtained from a detailed analysis of two TBM borability prediction methods and comparison with data from twenty case histories, show that a simple, low-cost method that uses one machine parameter and one rock parameter compares very favourably with a sophisticated, high-cost method that also includes details of rock mass characteristics (discontinuity, type frequency and orientation).

Two aromatic-type chelating agents, 1,10 phenanthroline (phen) and 8-quinolinol (quip), were tested as specific depressants for magnetite in the cationic silica flotation of magnetic taconite concentrates. Micro and batch flotation tests, along with zeta potential and adsorption measurements, were used. In the presence of a cationic collector, dodecylammonium chloride (DAC), the Fe/phen surface chelate electrostatically repelled DAC, and the magnetite was depressed. The negatively charged Fe(quin)2(OH)2- on the magnetite surface attracted the cationic collector and made magnetite floatable.

This paper will discuss the construction of nearly 165 m (540 ft) of 3.5. m (138 in) o.d. reinforced concrete pipe to replace an existing utilidor under the Duwamish River in Seattle, Wash. The project required that two 27.4 m (90 ft) deep shafts be installed for use as jacking and reception shafts during the tunneling operation, and permanent vaults once completed. Soil conditions to be excavated consisted of soft saturated sand and silt with a 21.3 m (70 ft) water head. This required the shafts to be constructed using ground freezing techniques and the tunnel installed by pipe jacking, using a Mechanical Earth Pressure Counter Balance (MEPCB) slurry shield. The original utilidor was constructed between 1924 and 1925, and has since been deliberately flooded because it is considered to be structurally unsound.

The molybdenite flotation plant at the Magma Copper Co. San Manuel concentrator has been in operation since 1956. In January of 1980, the plant was converted from a hydrogen peroxide-ferrocyanide process to the current sodium cyanide-sodium hydro- sulfide process. This paper is an operational review of Magma Copper Co.&apos;s molybdenite recovery circuit, column cell flotation experience, and use of on-stream X-ray fluorescence analysis.

In uranium mines, the median size of the aerosol has been found to be about 0.1 micron or less. Such small aerosols are readily deposited or "plated-out" on dosimeter interior surfaces resulting in the recording of a low dose. The "plate-out" properties of the CEA alpha dosimeter head are described with respect to aerosol properties in controlled experiments in the laboratory. A simple model is derived to estimate the amount of "plate-out" in the CEA head.

Field-testing of a new on-stream X-ray fluorescence analyzer was conducted in a copper concentrator. The evaluation of copper tailings and concentrate streams indicated a statistically acceptable correlation with laboratory chemical analyses. The new equipment employs a “components off-the-shelf” approach to minimize capital cost and maintenance issues and to utilize the latest advancements in X-ray fluorescence detector technology and computer capability. A general description of the system is provided, and performance of the analyzer measuring copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and molybdenum (Mo) is presented.

It is shown that dewatering of fine coal particles (D50 = 21 µm) is enhanced near the point-of-zero-charge. The coal surface is modified by the addition of copper ions and by adjusting the pH to precipitate surface-active metal hydroxy species, which promote agglomeration and produce low-moisture cakes. Filtration kinetics data are used in calculating filter cake parameters from an integrated form of Darcy&apos;s law. The influence of copper ions and pH on filter cake parameters and the correlations among them are presented.

Tube furnace experiments have been performed to evaluate the lime roasting of pyrite in air. The sulfur volatilized was measured over time. Variables studied included: form of lime, sodium sulfate additions, temperature, air flow rate, lime to pyrite weight ratio and pyrite particle size. It was found that more than 98% of the sulfur can be retained at a reactor temperature of 650°C, with a slight excess of calcium hydroxide. The roast products are primarily hematite and calcium sulfate.

Railroad companies and transit authorities have been slow to acknowledge that for many—utility crossings, a direct pipe installation below live rail can be just as effective as a more intrusive traditional cased crossing. Properly designed and specified pipe jacking work, and specifically pressure-balanced microtunneling, coupled with careful specification and analysis of geotechnical monitoring and, where necessary, ground improvement measures, can produce a low-risk, low ground movement solution to the needs of utility companies and municipalities whose services need to pass below urban and rural rail corridors. This paper discusses the design, geotechnical and ground improvement aspects of microtunnel crossings below active heavy and light rail lines and crossings beneath active subway tunnels.

Within most of Canada and the northern third of the United States, the soils overlying bedrock are of glacial origin. Tunnelling in glacial soils presents numerous challenges to the contractor, including abrupt changes in soil type, boulders and glacial erratics, water bearing fine sands and silts, toxic or explosive gases, and glacial till. This paper examines the available techniques for geotechnical exploration in glacial soils; the relationship between subsurface conditions predicted by various techniques and conditions actually encountered during tunnel construction; and potential improvements in the planning and implementation of geotechnical explorations. Case histories of geotechnical exploration and tunnel construction in glacial soils are also reviewed.

Collophane, cryptocrystalline fluorapatite, is examined as a substrate for plant water and wastewater remediation. The attenuation of Fe3+, Cr3+, Fe2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+ is presented as a function of metal ion concentration, amount of collophane, initial pH and conditioning time. TCLP results for Pb2+ contaminated collophane are presented. Mechanisms of adsorption for divalent and trivalent species are suggested. The Arrowhead Tunnels in southern California are being completed by MWD under stringent groundwater in?ow limits established by the U.S. Forest Service. Pre-excavation grouting, new TBMs and a bolted, gasketed, pre-cast concrete segment initial lining are employed to control water in?ows. The effectiveness of prescribed water control measures was analyzed using conservative assumptions with the analytical techniques described by Goodman (1964), Heuer (1995), and numerical modeling. Analyses results suggest groundwater in?ows to the tunnels can be maintained well below the limits with aggressive pre-excavation grouting balanced against a reasonable rate of advance and quality erection of the initial lining system.

Representative collections of recent dolomites, and of samples concentrated by leaching-out of coexisting magnesian calcites, provide grounds for appraisal of the compositions and cation ordering in recent dolomitized sediments. Unit cell volumes for near-stoichiometric compositions exceed those of ordered dolomite and increase as the departures from regular cation order became more pronounced. Infrared absorption maxima of disordered examples occur at perceptibly lower frequencies. Stable isotope ratios indicate that best ordered examples formed in highly saline environments. Present observations are qualitatively reconciled with data from synthetic products described by other authors.
