The authors have summarized the state-of-the-art in the kaolin clay industry very well. In some instances the problems which they have identified are common to all fine particle separations and in other cases the problems are unique to the kaolin clay industry itself. General areas of research which may be common to other systems and which deserve continued investigation at a higher level of support include: 1) Establishment of the relationship between flotation response and clay structure/composition. 2) Determination of temperature effects in the separation of fine particles. 3) Evaluation of the effect of bubble size on the quality of fine particle separation. The first two areas would require basic surface chemistry studies including microflotation, electrokinetics, adsorption density measurements, and microcalorimetry. The last area would be oriented toward the mechanics of bubble-particle attachment. Regarding the first area, the authors alluded to this research need by commenting on the variation in separation observed from one deposit to another. It seems that a detailed study characterizing the flotation response of various clay types with respect to structure and compositional features would be of considerable value. For example, I understand, that D. W. Fuerstenau's group has recently been successful in characterization, with respect to structure, of some silicate mineral types--chain, sheet and framework silicates. Phosphate deposits are distributed widely over the earth's surface. Of the known areas of deposit, eight fields are of particular interest because of their vast reserves of high grade phosphatic material and the volume of their production that goes to the world's great consuming areas. These fields, in the order of their present economic importance, are situated respectively in Florida, French Morocco, Kola Peninsula of U.S.S.R., Tunisia and Algeria, Tennessee, Mon- tana-Idaho-Wyoming-Utah, Ocean and Naru Islands in the Gilbert group, and in Egypt. The Rocky Mountain deposits have a comparatively low ranking in the phosphate trade of today, but this field contains one of the largest known reserves of phosphatic material, associated with which are recoverable trace minerals, which are of increasing importance in our national economy. The first discoveries of phosphate rock in the western states were recorded in Cache1 and Rich² counties in Utah, respectively in 1889 and 1897. Mining operations were begun on these deposits near Montpelier, Idaho, in 1906. During the latter year geological studies of the phosphate beds were started by Weeks and Ferrier of the U. S. Geological Survey. These studies have been continued to the present day by a distinguished roster of the Survey's technicians. As a result of this systematic exploratory program, the Survey has published a series of bulletins, papers, and maps, which provide the mining public with a comprehensive study of the exposed

DIFFUSION coefficients of RaD (PD) and RaE (Bi) in a Bi-0.255 atomic pct Pb alloy have been measured by the methods outlined in a previous paper.' The following changes were made in the experimental procedures: the bath was made up of about 400 to 500 g Bi; and no correction was made for the volume change of bismuth on melting. The data are presented in Table I and Fig. 1. A least-squares analysis of the data yielded D = (0.120 t 0.09) exp ( -9680 + 1070/RT) D- (0.0465 0.001) exp (-8100 + 466/RT). Statistical analysis of the data indicated that the activation energies are significantly different at the 50 pct level, but not at the 75 pct level, while the D values are significantly different at the 97.5 pct level, but not at the 99 pct level. The differences are thus not as clear-cut as they were for lead. However, bismuth diffuses faster than lead in high bismuth alloys as well as in lead. The high activation energies, more than twice the value calculated from viscosities, are in good agreement with the results of Grace and Derge.' No data were obtained at higher temperatures because of gas bubble formation in the capillary. Young† (communication to the Secretary): Before the appearance of Mr. Scott's paper in these Transactions we were not specially interested in the investigation which he has started; but at his request we have endeavored to collect from musty records and the recollection of our old friends a brief chronicle of the progress made by this house. As 3000 instruments were manufactured by us before any descriptive record was kept, and 2000 more before the record contained more than a statement whether the instrument was a transit or a level, and sometimes its size, we approach the task with timidity, trusting that the reader will bear the difficulties in mind, particularly as the writer's predecessors, from whom, no doubt, the information desired could have been obtained, have passed away. Instruments for surveying were manufactured by David Rittenhouse, of Philadelphia, as early as 1760; but it was not until late in the first quarter of this century that there was any American market for an instrument outside of the ordinary surveyor's compass. With the advent of canals and railroads, and the more extensive development of the Pennsylvania coalfields, arose a demand for surveying-instruments to meet problems in engineering beyond the limited field of the compass. From the limited experimental data in the literature, preliminary values were derived for the thermal diffusivity of titanium alloys and for the quenching severity of various mediums used in heat treating them. The thermal diffusivity, under quenching conditions, was found to be approximately 0.006 sq in. per sec. The quenching severity H for brine is approximately 8, for water 4, for oil 0.9, for air 0.08, and for argon 0.02 in. -' The quenching severity of the Jominy-Boegehold end quench water jet against titanium alloys appeared effectively infinite. Using these results, graphs were prepared showing ideal round sizes and Jominy positions having cooled conditions equivalent to those at the center and surface of titanium alloy rounds, plates, and sheets quenched in various media. THE importance of proper quenching of steel parts has long been recognized, and much quantitative work has been done on the subject. Recently, it has become evident that for titanium alloys, too, the rate of cooling from high temperature is important in obtaining high strength and hardness. Maximum hardness and strength may not be attained in the as-quenched condition but rather after a subsequent tempering or aging treatment. Nevertheless, if cooling from temperatures near the ß transus is too slow, for the hardenability of the alloy used, a soft a-ß structure will be produced which will not harden on subsequent aging.'-" The quenching of parts of practical interest can usually be approximated by simple shapes, such as cylinders (rounds) and plates (or sheets) of various thickness and combinations of these. A standard that has been used extensively for comparison purposes is the center of an ideal round: a cylinder quenched in a medium that instantly cools its surface to room temperature." For steel, considerable practical use has been made of the Jominy-Boegehold end quench hardenability specimen,".' and its value for titanium alloys is becoming evident. It therefore appeared worthwhile to attempt comparison of cooling conditions in titanium alloy rounds and plates of various sizes quenched in various media with cooling conditions in ideal round and Jominy quenches. These comparisons are based upon measurements reported in the literature. Quenching Severity of Jominy Water Jet and of Brine As one starting point, there were available the data of Phillips and Tobin8 for positions on a Jominy specimen having the same hardness as the centers of round bars of various size quenched in 5 pct NaOH brine, shown in Table I. The Jominy speci- men is a round bar, normally 1 in. diam and 4 in. long, quenched by a water jet at one end and air cooled on the other surfaces.' After quenching, hardness is measured vs distance from the quenched end on longitudinal flats ground 0.015 to 0.10 in. deep. The data of Table I were based on a subsized specimen of 3/4 in. diam. Since the positions tested are close to the jet quenched end, cooling there may be taken as due solely to the jet, and air cooling can be neglected. These positions are then equivalent to various locations near one surface of an 8 in. plate jet quenched on both sides. Assuming that the thermal diffusivity is constant and that Newton's law of cooling holds, temperature vs time curves at corresponding positions in Jominy specimen and round bar then may be calculated for various assumed quenching severities of the water jet and of the brine. Cooling curves are generally taken to be metallurgically equivalent when they show the same time to reach a temperature halfway between the initial (heat treating) temperature and the final (quenching medium) temperature.5 On this basis, using Russell's tables,9 upplemented by heat flow tables derived in similar fashion by the author for positions near the surface of severely quenched plates, it was found that the experimentally observed equivalence, Table I, was best matched if the quenching severity H of the Jominy water jet was taken as infinite (H = co). This means that the jet quenched surface should be considered as instantly cooled to the temperature of the water

News has just been received that Flight Commander William T. Hall, a Junior Member of-the Institute, was killed in action on Saturday, May 19, 1917. According to the' Toronto Star, Commander Hall was 24 years of age, a native of Toronto, and a grandson of the late William Kersteman. During the four years of his course in mining at the School of Practical Science, Toronto University, he passed every examination with honors. When war was first declared Commander Hall endeavored to join the artillery as an officer, and for that purpose secured a provisional lieu- tenancy with a Hamilton battery, but he did not receive an overseas appointment, and on being graduated as a mining engineer in 1915, he was offered a position in Chile, which he accepted. He left Toronto on May 27, 1915, and was engaged in Chile as a mining engineer for nearly a year. In the latter part of April, 1916, he decided to offer himself again for service at the front. He crossed the Andes and sailed for Liverpool, where he landed on May 13, 1916. On May 27, 1916, Capt. Hall was given a commission as lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps. He went to the front on Sept. 1, 1916, and remained there continuously. On April 4, 1917, he was promoted from lieutenant to the rank of flight commander. No details of how Commander Hall came by his death have as yet been received.

In 1874 my attention was called to what seemed to me an interesting and new nickel and cobalt combination found in Ludwig and Carter's copper mine, near Mason Valley, Esmeralda County, Nevada. With the assistance of Mr. A. Hebberling I made several partial analyses of the mineral or minerals. I also communicated with my friend, Professor H. B. Cornwall, of the John C. Green School of Science, College of New Jersey, who analyzed a couple of specimens which I forwarded to him. The copper ore occurs in the mine principally as carbonate and to a certain extent as silicate, the latter generally in connection with clay seams or bands. In some places, together with the copper silicate and clay, generally interstratified with them, there occurred a compact shining black mineral (a) containing nickel and cobalt. Occasionally, in cavities, in connection with (a) was found a black substance (b), either massive and in this case very similar to (a) but with driller lustre, or forming an incrustation with rough and botryoidal surface and radial-fibrous structure, or granular and earthy. A few specimens were found having on the surface very fragile black needles (c) sometimes 1/2-inch long, interspersed with needles of malachite. On June 15, Dr. E. E. Southard gave the following report to the Advisory Committee on Industrial Mental Hygiene of the. Engineering Foundation. Psychiatric social work, a new specialty in social work, was the topic of several section meetings (500-600 in attendance) at the National Conference for Social Work, held at Atlantic City, June 1-6. The new specialty was stated, by Dr. R. C. Cabot, to be the greatest single advance in medical social work since its establishment. Reports from three schools (Smith, New York, Philadelphia) indicate a good production rate of personnel, probably at least one hundred a; year, chiefly to be absorbed by hospitals, unless industrial psychiatry steps into the field. No detailed public announcements concerning industrial psychiatry were made; but private discussions elicited approval only for the program. Indications are that many non-medical social workers will decide to get additional training to go into medical social work and then to specialize in psychiatric social work and that many medical social workers will desire to specialize in psychiatric social work, with a view partly to entering reconstruction work, partly to entering industrial psychiatry. Suggestion has been made that psychiatric social workers may go into some kinds of, employment management and may look for special courses to that end. Evidence. has been brought that certain "compensated" psychopathic employees have been good (even very good) workmen: emphasis should be laid on this point to show the constructive aspect of industrial psychiatry:

AN analysis of this subject demands a study of the theory and practice of the present system, conclusions as to its merits, and recommendations for remedying its defects if any be found. Theory of the Present Law The theory of the present law with reference to lode locations contemplates the existence upon the surface of mineral-bearing veins which have clearly marked boundaries, and which can be so readily traced that a locator may immediately mark the boundaries of his 600 by 1,500 ft. claim in such a way that the vein will pass through both of its end-lines. It also supposes that, having discovered such a mineral-bearing vein, the locator will at once post a notice upon such discovery, mark the boundaries of his location in such a manner that they can be readily traced, and from that time forward have absolute title to the ground embraced within such boundaries, as against every person except the United States. For initiating title to placer ground, the law presupposes the discovery of a valuable mineral deposit; but not necessarily in place, as in the case of lode claims; and the location must be made to conform "as nearly as may be" to the legal subdivisions of the United States public land survey. When the placer law was extended to include the acquisition of title to oil lands, no exception was made as to the necessity for the discovery of valuable mineral in advance of location!

WALTER N. CRAFTS,* Toronto, Canada (written discussion?).-During the forging of 9.2-in. shells -for the United States Army, it was noticed that better results were obtained in certain instances when test bars had been held sometime before pulling. An investigation, therefore, was made by our metallographer, Mr. F. M. Arnold, to determine the effect of seasoning. The forging consists of a single operation, piercing a solid cast blank. The test sections were cut from the walls by an oxyacetylene flame, one piece from the nose end and one from the base on the opposite side. The test pieces were not heat treated in any way and the tests and seasonings were carried on at normal atmospheric temperatures. The specifica-tions were as follows: Standard 2-in. test bar, 0.505 in. in diameter; elastic limit, over 19 long tons, or 42,500 lb.; ultimate stress, 39.6 to 49.1 long tons, or 87,500 to 110,000 lb. per sq. in.; elongation, over 13 per cent. As a preliminary test two heats were selected; BP555, which was tested and reported failed on elongation on Aug. 20; and B01771, which was tested and reported failed on Aug. 24. On Aug. 29, retests were cut and machined from the same shells and held till Sept. 3 (5 days) when they were pulled. Both sets of results are given below.

GEORGE F. BECKER Dr. George Ferdinand Becker, notice of- whose death appeared in the May Bulletin, was born in New York City Jan. 5, 1847, the son of Alexander Christian Becker, member of a Danish family, and Sarah Cary Tuckernian Becker of Boston. Dr. Becker was the last member of the group of distinguished geologists who, in 1879, were associated with Clarence King at the time of the organization of the United States Geological Survey. He was a leader in mining geology and geophysics, and for many years had been the chief of the Division of Chemical and Physical Research in the Geological Survey, and the investigations under his direction led to the establishment of the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. Dr. Becker was a graduate of Harvard University and received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Heidelberg, and in 1871 passed the final examinations at the Royal School of Mines in Berlin. He was for four years an instructor of mining and metallurgy in the University of California, from which he went to the United States Geological Survey. In 1896 he examined the gold and diamond mines f South Africa and at the time of the Spanish-American War was detailed to serve as geologist on the staff of General Bell with the army in the Philippine Islands. He died at his hone in Washington, D. C., on Apr. 20'.1

Boliden Metall Aktiebolag, the prime base metal mining company of Sweden, treats some 10-10.9 t/y (11-12 stpy) of sulphide ore in nine concentrators. During the years considerable effort has been devoted to the development of all phases of the technology of ore prospecting, mining, milling, smelting and refining. This has been necessary due to the complex and low grade ores. The autogenous grinding technique was first studied within the company as early as 1945. Basic test work commenced during the early fifties, whereby the merits of pebble grinding could be evaluated. In parallel with the converting of the rod mill/ball mill grinding systems to rod mill/pebble mill systems, the development work concerning the feasibility of autogenous grinding went on resulting in the installation of a 8 6.7 x 2.1 m (8 22 x 7 ft.) cascade mill at the Vassbo lead mine in 1959. Long term tests at the Vassbo plant together with a number of pilot plant test involving low grade silicious ores and pyritic comples base metal ores successive led to a better understanding of the process of autogenous grinding. Before a two stage autogenous grinding system could be chosen for the expansion of the Aitik copper mine, a carefully planned survey concerning grinding characteristics and variances in the ore and flowsheet was undertaken. The expanded plant went on stream in 1972 and in the beginning of 1973 and since then has performed excellently.

With the object of improving the melting, casting, and working of palladium and 95.5 pct Pd-4.5 pct Ru, the effects of different melting atmospheres (reducing, oxidizing, and neutral), crucible linings, and annealing atmospheres have been studied. Some interesting observations are included about the solubility and diffusion of gases in palladium. THE object of the present work was to ascertain the effect of oxidizing, inert, and reducing ambient atmospheres on the melting and casting of palladium and a Pd-Ru alloy commonly used for jewelry. The need for such a study was indicated during World War I1 when jewelers experienced difficulty in their attempts to make small castings of the torch-melted Pd-Ru alloy by the lost-wax process. When the metal was melted under oxidizing conditions similar to those used for platinum, the castings were gassy; on the other hand, if the melting atmosphere was reducing, the castings were hot-torn and brittle. General Experimental Procedure Pure palladium sponge (99.9 pct Pd) and pure ruthenium powder (99.8 pct Ru) were used for making small ingots (50 g) of palladium and 95.5 pct Pd-4.5 pct Ru by induction melting. The coil, 3 in. high by 2 in. ID with 16 turns, was energized by a 20 kva Ajax high frequency converter. The melting crucibles, so-called sand crucibles, which were made of a highly refractory fireclay, were lined with different materials, including proprietary magnesia, alundum, zircon, and zirconia

FOR the past six years gravity surveys have been used for underground prospecting in the copper mines at Bisbee, Ariz. The primary purpose of the surveys has been to reduce the diamond drilling and crosscutting necessary for exploration. Since many of the orebodies are small, and geologic control is not always apparent, any information that will direct the drilling and crosscutting is highly desirable. Because of extensive development and exploration work in the copper mines at Bisbee, it has been possible to cover more than 630,000 ft of crosscuts on 30 levels with the gravity surveys. In the process the gravity procedures have been refined to a high degree. Density Contrast: For a gravity survey to be successful, a sufficient density contrast must exist between the geologic feature sought and surrounding host rocks. Most mineralized areas will provide this contrast if fairly massive bodies are present. In the Bisbee area the entire sequence of formations, except for alluvium, appears to have specific gravities ranging from 2.65 to 2.70. These values have been determined by means of a large number of cut samples and diamond drill cores. As a further check, vertical gravity differences have been used where nonmineralized sections are known to occur.' The only known major gravity disturbances result from mineralization that has increased the density and the voids that have decreased density. The voids are caused by mining operations and by underground water movement that has developed several areas of caverns. Equipment: While not absolutely essential, a small rugged gravity meter, such as the Worden meter, is highly desirable. A tall tripod, about the height of a transit tripod, permits instrument set-ups in deep water and in locations where fallen timber and muck piles make it impossible to use a short tripod. An additional advantage of a tall tripod is that it places the meter in the center of the crosscut, reducing the error caused by the crosscut void. Size and weight are important, since the only satisfactory means of operating the meter underground is to carry it by hand. A backpack can be used in rare instances but is usually a hindrance because of the close station spacing. The operator's ability to move through tight clearances will improve survey coverage, as it is then possible to move through raises and caved areas and to pass mine cars and machinery with a minimum of trouble. Station Control: Gravity stations are normally located every 100 ft along the crosscuts, at each intersection, and in the face of all stub crosscuts. In areas of high gravity relief, or where small anomalies might be expected, stations may be located at 25 or 50-ft intervals. When possible, the stations should be offset to avoid effects of raises or other voids. The gravity stations on a level are tied to one or more base stations, which are usually located at the shaft or near the portal of an adit. The base stations may be part of a gravity control net that extends to each level in the mine as well as to the surface. Such a net extending throughout the potential area of the surveys is highly desirable, as it is then possible to compare all gravity stations on a uniform basis. The stations that are part of the base net should be carefully established by multiple readings and, if necessary, by a least squares adjustment of the loops. In some instances where levels do not have a shaft station, or where access may be blocked by caving, it may be necessary to establish secondary bases at the top and bottom of the raises that are between levels. Under fair conditions 70 to 90 gravity stations can be located and run in 6 hr by a two-man crew. The best field procedures depend on conditions. Reduction of Field Data: Most of the time required to produce a final gravity map is consumed in processing the data. Each meter reading must be corrected for a minimum of five factors that affect the gravity value in addition to the density contrast being sought. These factors are 1) instrumental drift, 2) station elevation, 3) topography, 4) latitude, and 5) regional gravity gradient. Mine openings, such as stopes and raises, will affect the value. However, it is seldom practical to make corrections for these voids. Usually a rotation is made on the field note on the station, and any

IN solid solutions atoms of differing sizes occupy the same crystalline lattice, requiring that some of them be compressed and others expanded. The energy involved has been called misfit strain energy and is an important concept of crystal chemistry. If the atomic sizes and elastic constants of interatomic bonds are known, the misfit energy may be calculated,' provided certain simplifying assumptions are allowable. Usually, isotropic crystals are assumed and interatomic distances are taken to be the statistical average determined from X-ray diffraction. Such calculations yield values of the misfit energy of the order of 1 or 2 kcal per atom in alloys such as Au-Cu at compositions of 50 atomic pct. However, evidence has accumulated in recent times that atoms change their sizes with composition of alloys, implying electronic rearrangement of the bonds. The size changes have been found particularly by application of the X-ray method developed by Warren, Averbach, and Roberts.' Thus, Averbach, Flinn, and Cohen3 determined radii in Au-Cu alloys. Oriani4 showed that these new radii led to a calculated misfit energy in disordered AuCu, which was decreased from the values calculated by the usual theory more than twenty-fold, to only 80 cal per g atom. Thermodynamic calculations from the phase diagram5 also show misfit energy to be no more than a few hundred calories per g atom in this alloy. The question of what electronic rearrangements are possible therefore becomes compelling in estimating misfit energy. In the following pages the results of certain calculations on the AuCu tetragonal superlattice are submitted. Conclusions drawn from these should be applicable in large degree to disordered solid solutions. As in all ordered states, bonding distances in the superlattice are individually known, rather than being merely average distances as found from lattice constants of disordered states. Moreover, only the Au-Au and Cu-Cu distances are strained; the elastic constants of these are known in the elementary state. In the usual calculation it is necessary to assume elastic constants for Au-Cu bonds. Misfit energy has thus been calculable without the need of many simplifying assumptions usually made. It is still assumed that equilibrium bond lengths and elastic properties of the bonds are the same in the alloy as in the pure metals. As previously discussed, this is probably not correct. Also assumed is that the bonds are not affected by strain of neighboring bonds. A calculation of Young's modulus from compressibility data shows this to be far from true; extensive electronic rearrangements take place. It would seem that misfit energy cannot be calculated from elasticity data for the elements. The usual methods may, however, give an upper limit which is often much higher than the true value. The question of electronic rearrangement is, of course, a complex one. Pauling's theory gives a simple, approximate treatment of the relation between type of bond and bond distance. This has been applied with some success to the Au-Cu system, as will be shown in a later section. Misfit Energy in Au-Cu Alloys Hume-Rothery and Raynor6 discuss the Au-CU system as a type example of strain energy. The gold atom is 12.8 pct larger in diameter than the copper atom, near the size factor limit beyond which solid solubility is severely restricted. They therefore consider the misfit energy to be large, a conclusion for which they believe they find evidence in the phase diagram. Gold and copper are completely miscible in the solid state, but the alloy has a minimum melting point at an intermediate composition. From this Hume-Rothery and Raynor conclude that the strain energy is nearly large enough to prevent miscibility; the phase diagram tends toward a eutec-tic type. In Ag-Cu, which has almost identical size relationships, solid miscibility is quite limited; whereas in Au-Ag, where atomic sizes are nearly the same, there is complete miscibility without a minimum in the melting point. From their arguments the heat of formation of Au-Cu would be expected to be endothermic or only slightly exothermic, that of Ag-Cu to be endothermic, and that of Au-Ag to be exothermic. Deviations, from Ve-gard's law of additivity of atomic radii support these conclusions, since Au-Cu and Ag-Cu both have pronounced positive deviations, and Au-Ag has a negative deviation. Nevertheless, Au-Cu alloys form exothermically; indeed, considerably more exothermically than Au-Ag, Table I. Hence, strain energy must be much less important in this case than Hume-Rothery and Raynor have supposed.

TOTAL DIRECT IMPACT The uranium mining industry's principal economic impacts on the Texas economy are the result of three flows of money from the industry into the remainder of the state's economy. These three are: (1) money paid to individuals (personal income) ; (2) money paid to other businesses (business income); and (3) money paid to state and local governments (government revenues). As these direct payments from the uranium industry to various other sectors of the Texas economy subsequently circulate and recirculate within the state, the indirect effects of uranium mining's direct impacts multiply to reach amounts significantly higher than the direct income flows alone. Over the past decade, the uranium mining industry has substantially increased its role as a provider of jobs, personal income, business income, and government revenues in Texas. The growth has come almost exclusively in a largely rural, seven-county area that lies within the triangle formed by the Laredo, San Antonio, and Corpus Christi metropolitan areas. The uranium mining industry, in fact, has been the major dynamic element in this rural area despite relative stagnation in most of the region's other basic economic sectors. Over the three years from 1976 to 1978, the South Texas uranium mining industry directly contributed a total of $115 million to the economy of the seven- county region in which it operated and $164 million to the economy of the entire state of Texas. In 1979 alone, the total direct contribution of the industry to the Texas economy had climbed to $124 million in personal, business, and government income. PERSONAL INCOME IMPACT In the period from 1976 through 1978, the South Texas uranium mining industry provided an average of $12.5 million in personal income each year directly to residents of Atascosa, Bee, Duval , Karnes, Live Oak, McMullen, and Webb counties -- the seven Texas' counties that make up the South Texas Uranium Belt. A1 though 84 percent of this resulted from the employment of area residents in uranium industry jobs, some amounts were also provided by the payment of rents and royalties to land owners for the use of their land and mineral rights in uranium mining operations. In 1979, the uranium industry provided approximately $38 million to residents of the Uranium Belt and the rest of Texas. This was more than double the average of $16.1 million provided to Texas residents during the 1976 to 1978 period. The full importance of the uranium industry as a source of personal income, however, should not be reckoned merely by the amount of wages and salaries that it pays directly to its own employees, nor by its rent and royalty payments paid directly to land and mineral rights owners living in Texas. The added payments that the industry makes directly to other Texas businesses and state and local governments in Texas are themselves converted into personal income as those business firms and government units in turn pay their employees. All of the direct income payments made by the uranium industry circulate and recirculate within the state's economy, multiplying their impact as they go, until they eventually all leak out of the state as federal taxes or as payments to individuals or businesses located outside of Texas. The combined circulation and recirculation of the direct personal, business, and government income that was provided by the-uranium industry in Texas during 1976, 1977, and 1978 resulted in an average annual amount of indirect personal income of more than $83 mill ion. This alone was $20 mill ion more than the industry's average annual sales during the same years. The total of combined direct and indirect personal income contributed to the Texas economy by the uranium mining industry in that same three-year period thus averaged almost $100 million annually. In 1979, the amount of indirect personal income contributed to the Texas economy by the circulation of uranium mining's direct contributions had risen to about $196 million, more than double the average of the previous three years. The combined direct and in- direct personal income impact in 1979 thus amounted to $234 million. BUSINESS INCOME IMPACT The income provided directly to other Texas business firms through the purchase of needed goods and services by the uranium industry has been twice as big as the industry's payrolls. In 1976, 1977, and 1978, the South Texas uranium industry spent an average of almost $36 million each year to buy both goods and services from other Texas businesses. By 1979, this direct contribution to the Texas economy had swollen to $76 million. The biggest share of the uranium industry's payments to other businesses have gone to contracting firms, including both construction firms and those providing specialized mining services. In the past four years, about 40 percent of the direct payments made by Texas uranium producers to other Texas firms have been to contractors. Texas wholesale and retail firms have also shared in the business sales provided by the South Texas uranium mining industry. Over the past four years, Texas wholesale and retail trade businesses have accounted for about 34 percent of the uranium mining industry's purchases from other Texas businesses. Public utilities firms have received another six per- cent, while Texas manufacturers and transportation firms have accounted for about five percent each. On the assumption that stress or strain relaxation occurs as the result of a thermally activated process, equations are derived relating to tensile experiments that give the strain as a function of the time under the condition of constant stress, and the stress as a function of the time for constant strain. It is demonstrated that if the strain-rate equation i = previously proPosed by Kuhlmann., is used as a starting point, then the relaxation of strain at constant stress may be expressed by the equation c = (-RT/(Y) 1tz tanh (t + is the strain capable of being relaxed at any given instant. Similarly, it is shown that the relaxation of stress at constant strain may be given by a = (-RT/B) In tanh (t + t0)/27, where a is the instantaneois value of the relaxable stress. The fact that these relationships reduce to well-known empirical equations at both large and small values of the stress Or strain is also shozcn. The present theory is shown to agree well with experimental data obtained from tensile elastic aftereffect experiments on a zirconium specimen prestrained at 77 k as to make it strongly anelastic. It is also demonstrated that elastic aftereffect data obtained using torsional specimens ?,Lay agree reasonably well with the equation derived for the case of tension. RELAXATION experiments are often employed as a means of studying metallic deformation mechanisms.' The simplest and most commonly employed techniques involve stress relaxation at constant strain and strain relaxation at constant stress. In general, however, investigations of this nature have been seriously handicapped in the past by a lack of suitable equations giving the time dependence of the relaxing variable over an interval that extends from small strains up into the region where internal-friction experiments become strain-amplitude dependent. This paper presents a derivation of such a set of equations for the case where the time-dependent part of the strain is anelastic or recoverable and the specimens are loaded in simple tension. The relaxation of strain under the condition of constant stress will be considered first. Let us assume that strain relaxation occurs as the result of a reversible thermally activated process that occurs at a number of relaxation centers lying in an elastic matrix. Then, following Kuhlmann,2 we may express the rate of strain relaxation as follows: where C is the strain rate, AFx the free energy of activation of the process controlling strain relaxation, a, the effective or average resolved stress at the relaxation centers, u an activation volume, R the universal gas constant, T the absolute temperature, > a factor with dimensions of a volume that accounts for the strain contribution of a successful operation of a unit process, N the number of relaxation centers per unit volume, and v the Debye frequency. The first term on the right of Eq. [I] represents a strain rate in the direction favored by the stress, while the second term represents the rate in the opposite direction. It is implied in Eq. [I.] that both F and v are symmetrical with respect to the two basic directions of operation of a relaxation process. Eq. [I] may also be written where and S and Q are the activation entropy and activation energy, respectively, of the relaxation process. In the following, A will be considered a constant. This is compatible with a set of experimental conditions where the relaxation rate is controlled by a single basic reversible process in which it may be assumed that the temperature dependence of the product ?Nv is negligible in comparison with the temperature variation of the exponential term. It is also implied that v, 7, and N do not depend strongly on a, . In deriving a relationship for the strain as a function of the time from her equation, equivalent to Eq. [2], Kuhlmann2 chose to consider only the limiting cases where the time was either very small or very large. It will now be shown that it is possible to integrate Eq. [2] to obtain a single equation valid over a wide range of strains if the concept of relaxable strain is introduced. The use of this quantity, which is the difference between the instantaneous value of the strain and the value of the strain at complete relaxation, represents the primary point of departure of the present theory from that of earlier workers. Let us express the effective stress at the relaxation centers in terms of strain. The problem frequently arises, particularly in refining metals or smelting scrap metals, of separating metals in the metallie state. Many metals may be separated by taking advantage of their difference in vapor pressure. Such separations can be made at atmospheric pressure, but the separations are much more selective and can be carried out at considerably lower temperatures if the distillation is done at pressures of a few millimeters or less in an evacuated enclosure. Until recently, this has not been considered feasible as a metallurgical operation, but the recent improvemcnts that have been made in vacuum technology have broadened the applicability of vacuum processes and have prompted re-examination of low-pressurc distillation of metals as a practicable process. The distillation of zinc from lead is one separation that has already been reduced to practice.l This paper is the first of a series of studies being made on separation of nonferrous metals by distillation at low pressures. Although these experiments were confined to the separation of zinc from aluminum, the significance of the results is by no means confined to these two metals. The purpose has been to investigate a metallurgical technique rather than merely to devise a means of separating specific metals. The experimental work on distillation of zinc from zine-aluminum alloys at reduced pressure grew out of earlier work on distillation at atmospheric pressure.2 The earlier work indicated that it would not be practicable to decrease the zinc in the alloy much below 10 pct owing to the high temperature required. Therefore attention was turned to distillation ah low pressures, at which lower temperatures are required. After preliminary tests were made in a small, evacuated tube furnace, a larger furnace having a capacity of 100 to 150 Ib of metal per charge was constructed. Distillation tests were first made on pure zinc and then on aluminum-zinc alloys of various composition. Particular attention was given to the limit to which zinc could be reduced in the residual metal. Data were also taken on the rate of evaporation, and heat balances were made for both the crucible and the condenser. Distillation Furnace The vacuum-distillation unit is illustrated schematically in Fig 1. The major components are the induction furnace, the condenser, the vacuum system, and the power-conversion unit. Power is supplied to the induction furnace from a 50-kw 3000-cycle motor-driven alternator. The pressure in the furnace is reduced by a vacuum pump having a nominal pumping speed of 10 liters per sec. When in operation, the metal vapors travel upward from the furnace to the water-cooled condenser where they are collected in amounts of 50 to 100 lb. The condenser is removed with aid of an electric hoist. When the system is under vacuum, the condenser is made self-sealing by a rubber gasket between the smooth-faced, water-cooled flanges at the top of the furnace and the bottom of the condenser. The pressure of the atmosphere is more than sufficient to insure sealing. At the conclusion of an experiment, the residual metal can be removed from the furnace by removing the condenser and tilting the furnace with the electric hoist. The metal was cast into the molds carried on a mold truck. A photograph of the furnace and auxiliary equipment is shown in Fig 2. The details of the vacuum furnace are illustrated in Fig 3. The furnace proper is made vacuum-tight with rubber gaskets placed at each end of a fused quartz cylinder. A clamping plate at the bottom and a ring at the top are made to squeeze the rubber between the metal and the end of the quartz tube. A large graphite crucible placed inside the quartz cylinder is thermally insulated and physically supported by refractory insulating bricks. A thermocouple in a quartz protection tube is located at the bottom of the crucible: the leads pass through a rubber seal in the bottom plate. The supporting structure for the furnace is an angle iron frame with transite board sides. The condenser is made in the form of a water jacketed cylinder with an opening to the vacuum line at the top. The bottom has a projecting skirt inside the machined flange to provide additional cooling for the rubber gasket. Condenser sleeves are made in the form of two semicylindrical pieces of sheet metal that fit snugly inside the cooling jacket. The split sleeve facilitates removal of the condensate. Measurement of Temperatare and Pressure The metal temperature was measured by a platinum-platinilm rhodium thermocouple inserted in a well extending up into the bottom of the graphite crucible. During rapid evaporation there is a wide difference in temperature between the surface and the main body of metal in the crucible because of the large amount of heat that must be conducted to the surface to supply the heat of evaporation.
