"The key technologies of a large rectangular pipe jacking machine with dimensions of 10.12m × 7.27m (width x height) include selection of rectangular cross-section cutting modes, analysis on the strength and stiffness of the rectangular shield, integrated control of electro-hydraulic proportional thrust systems and ground conditioning for excavation are presented in detail in this paper. These key technologies have been successfully applied and verified on site during tunneling, providing a new concept for the building of large rectangular traffic and pedestrian tunnels in urban areas for the future.1 INTRODUCTIONIn the past, underground tunnels were mainly used for drainage, sewage, utilities, metro tunnel, etc. and most of them had circular cross-sections. Recently, as a result of economic development, gradually accelerating urbanization process and diminishing ground space, underground tunnels have already become a new trend for urban underground space utilization. Due to the heavy traffic flow, the demands for rectangular cross-section underground tunnels, such as pedestrian underpass and road tunnel, are increasing gradually.The Rectangular pipe jacking machine (hereinafter referred to as RPJM) was firstly developed in Japan for the construction of metro station, pedestrian underpass, underwater tunnel by-passes, etc. Kazunaki Kawai et al. introduced a RPJM developed and manufactured by KOMATSU in 2002 [1]. Tosikazu Kubota et al. confirmed the rectangular tunnels’ superiority to circular tunnels with regard to larger inner cross-section and lower construction cost in their RPJM construction reports [2]. Compared to circular pipe jacking machines, a RPJM also has the merits of a higher inner tunnel space utilization ratio and is able to excavate in shallow overburden areas. As shown in Figure 1, the effective area of a rectangular tunnel is more than 20% higher than that of an equivalent circular tunnel."

There are more than 15,000 abandoned mine features in New Mexico. A considerable number of these mines have not been cataloged or assessed for prioritized reclamation efforts. These mine wastes can be examined as a resource of critical minerals. Many of legacy mine waste deposits have undiscovered commodities and critical minerals, due to low recovery processes during past production. In this project, Black Hawk mine wastes in Grant County, New Mexico are examined by thorough mineralogical and geochemical characterization. This project seeks to characterize and estimate the critical minerals in mine wastes of Black Hawk mine, and determine the acid generating potential of mine waste. Identifying and producing critical minerals in New Mexico may directly benefit the U.S economy and national security.

This paper will review the basic aspects of the U.S. coal business and explore the commercial approaches which have proven to be most successful.

Three years ago a research program was initiated at the University of Saskatchewan to develop seismic surveying techniques for use in the Precambrian geological environment. The success of the reflection method in many younger geological settings suggested that this is the technique which would be the most suitable for experimentation. A successful adaptation of this technique to the Shield environment would make mapping of rock formations possible to much greater depth than is possible at the present time with any other applied geophysical technique. This presentation attempts to illustrate the advances which have been made in this program and will provide some insight into future plans. The field investigations were limited to the Flin Flon basin near to the town of Flin Flon, Manitoba (Fig. 1). This area was chosen because the surface geology has been mapped in great detail and it is a very important base metal producing region. It is an ancient sedimentary basin with some characteristics similar to areas where the reflection method has been successful.

In today’s challenging mining environment, everyone is focused on minimizing cost per ton. With haulage costs approaching up to 45% of the overall mining costs, and loader performance driving production, optimizing payload on the truck is a big opportunity. This paper will focus on technology’s role in loaders achieving the truck target payload. There are constantly new innovations in technology, but not everyone uses them correctly. Technology is intended to help achieve the next level of performance, but still requires the right people and processes to effectively utilize the benefits. In today’s mining business, miners, engineers, trainers, supervisors, and managers have ever increasing roles and responsibilities as never seen before in past decades. Technology can make these roles more efficient, but fully relying on the technology can detract from optimization. Sometimes the old-fashioned method of loading to a consistent pass match will provide a lower cost per ton. Before blindly trusting your technology feedback, know these three areas discussed in this paper: (1) Prerequisites to utilize technology in payload management; (2) Types of payload management technology; (3) How to use the data to manage operator behavior. The objective of this paper is to provide low-cost recommendations to efficiently increase production. INTRODUCTION Whether miners claim to have been around and experienced it all, or they are the data-driven new generation on the mine site, miners are expected to execute the mine plan at the lowest cost possible. So why is it so difficult to execute this task? Shouldn’t supervisors just have to staff the equipment, tell operators to have a safe day and tally up the numbers at the end of the shift? Let the technology system do the rest; what could go wrong? Lots. Having examined numerous mining operations that use the latest loading technologies over the past several years, one common denominator is the opportunity to improve loader operator performance. Mining companies seek help from consultants, training departments, performance reporting systems and an arsenal of resources. Armed with all this information, but the improvements don’t happen, what could have gone wrong? It comes down to people, not managing the resources to drive the right behavior and as a result, the mine’s performance is not where it should be. Understanding how to make “Great Miners” out of these people is critical to this constant struggle to move more with less and get the costs down. Extraction CPT (Cost-Per-Ton) is most sensitive to optimizing loader production which can be generalized into 3 categories of influence: machine specifications, cycle timing, and continuous management using technology. After establishing a basic production machine configuration, utilizing technology to manage cycle times, operator efficiency and payload can be advantageous. Prerequisites to Utilize Payload Management Technology It is important to begin with the primary considerations that enable the use of technology to continuously manage loading productivity. All systems are interdependent in mining, but these are divided into the simplest terms to remember. First, fix your timing and geometry.

Kidston Gold Mines is a 14 000 tonnes per day rated operation located 280 kilometers west of Townsville in Queensland. The principle shareholder is Placer Development Limited. Kidston's orebody consists of 44.2 million tonnes graded at 1.79 g/t gold and 2.22 g/t silver. Production commenced in January, 1985, and despite a number of control, mechanical and electrical problems, each month has seen a steady improvement in plant performance to a current level of over ninety percent rated capacity.

Survival of the mining industry as a viable economic entity in the United States is being seriously threatened by declining grades of ore reserves, rising operational and capital costs, and increased governmental taxes, restrictions, and subsidizing of third world competition. Discovery of major high-grade deposits is becoming increasingly unlikely. International competitiveness of the U.S. deposits will depend upon 'Yankee Ingenuity,' innovations in mining methods, metallurgical treatment, and financial arrangements, and a viable national strategy. This will require not only effective management for control of operations, but management that encourages breakthroughs in technology, financing, labor relations, and in public and governmental understanding. The mine geologist and the exploration geologist both have important roles to play in all aspects of this fight for survival of the industry.

Coal is the nation's most abundant fossil energy resource and serves as the primary fuel for the U.S. electric-power industry. However, its continued and expanded use is often challenged by the nature and amount of its associated impurities, such as mineral matter, sulfur, and trace elements. The moderate- to high-sulfur content of many U.S. coals is of particular concern today as potentially more stringent regulations requiring further reductions in sulfur dioxide emissions are being considered. The most prevalent method currently employed to control SO2 emissions from coal-burning facilities is post-combustion flue-gas desulfurization. However, physical coal cleaning (a.k.a. beneficiation, preparation) methods can also be effective in removing sulfur and ash impurities from coal prior to combustion. In a typical physical cleaning operation, raw coal is crushed to about 50-mm (2-inch) topsize, and then screened into coarse, intermediate, and fine size fractions. Crushing liberates some of the ash-forming minerals, including the portion of inorganic sulfur (pyritic) not chemically bound to the coal matrix. The percentage of impurities liberated generally increases as the coal particle size is reduced. Coarse- and intermediate-sized coal particles are typically subjected to specific gravity-based cleaning methods, while fine-sized (less than 0.5-mm) coal particles are beneficiated using froth flotation, a technique based on surface property differences. Greater cleaning potential exists at finer sizes because of increased liberation of impurities, but this potential is not fully realized because of inefficiencies associated with fine particle separation using state-of-the-art coal cleaning technologies.

Some of the members will probably ask themselves what close relationship exists between hydro-metallurgy and a wet scrubber, but we are sure that as soon as deeper thought is given to the matter it will be realised how vital scrubbing, operations are in metallurgical plants. In ordinary metallurgical installations or pyro-metallurgical processes ore concentrates are first of all shifted from place to place and dust is created. In other cases the ores or concentrates are crushed or dried or roasted, and in each one of these operations dust and fumes, are created. All suspended particles and fumes originating from the abovementioned conditions not only, in many instances, provide health hazards which disrupt production and endanger the personnel in the plant, but also are the source of economic losses through extra maintenance and wear to moving machinery due to abrasion and corrosion. Further losses are incurred by the waste of fine, very often valuable, components. The Party who once said that in several metallurgical plants the bulk of the profits was discharged into the atmosphere by the stack wasn't stretching the truth. There is a place in Africa where a gold producing concern used to lose over 5 oz. of fine gold per day out of a total production of 3000 oz. per month. In another instance, copper concentrate going as high as 80% Cu was discharged into the atmosphere at the rate of 4 tons per day. Realising the value of removing and collecting solids and fumes created in metallurgical plants, a thorough study was made of the available plant and equipment offered on the market. Some units were found very efficient, but very expensive; some others also very efficient but with temperature and maintenance limitations. Some others were also efficient but prohibitive from the point of running costs.

"The city of Denver, CO has experienced extreme growth in the past decade, with the population of the city topping more than 700,000 people in 2018. The current storm water drainage system was put in place in the early 1900s and has not been able to keep up with the growth of the city.When it rains north and east of the city, the runoff goes toward the South Platte River. With the dense population and sometimes severe thunderstorms in the summer, the city has experienced significant flooding that not only endangers lives of residents, but some of the storms have caused millions of dollars of property damage.The Platte to Park Hill Project is a $298-million nearterm, four-phase solution to the flooding that includes the Globeville landing outfall; an open drainage project in the Cole neighborhood in north Denver; an area for temporary water detention and another temporary water detention in Park Hill.The largest and most complex phase of the project is the Globeville landing outfall — a $70-million box culvert project that includes a pair of 157-m (515-ft) long, 243-cm (96-in.) diameter storm water tunnels that pass beneath a busy rail yard with 17 tracks for the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) and two Regional Transportation District (RTD) commuter rail tracks. The tunnels, which were installed parallel to a pair of existing 243-cm (96-in.) tunnels, were designed by Brierley & Associates as a client of Merrick & Company for the City & County of Denver, and Bradshaw Construction constructed the one-pass tunnels.From the start, it was evident that the tunneling portion of the project would be the most challenging because of the rail yards.“It’s a little bit more complicated because the railroads have such tight restrictions for settlement,” said Rebecca Brock, Brierley’s project manager. “We had a lot of meetings with Union Pacific and RTD to figure out what are prescribed versus tolerable settlements.”“The portion extending beyond the UPRR under the RTD rails was challenging, as RTD is new to tunnel installations under its tracks,” said Lester Bradshaw, president of Bradshaw Construction. “The RTD tracks employed a unique foundation of continuous concrete with integral raised concrete ties on rubber bushings. Minimizing settlement to these tracks was a critical requirement.”"

Pyrrhotite (FeS1+x ,0<x<0.15) is an iron sulfide which is considered to be a pest in carbon-in-pulp/ leach (CIP/L) gold processing [l].The perceived influence of pyrrhotite on gold processing by CIP/L is a competing consumption of 02 and CN­as the pyrrhotite dissolves by oxidation [1,2]. The few studies of the oxidation chemistry, kinetics and mechanism of the oxidation ofpyrrhotite are reviewed in detail elsewhere [3].There is broad agreement that the surface of pyrrhotite is very rapidly oxidized to form a thin (e.g. 10 nm) ferric hydroxy-oxide layer which overlays an iron-deficient sulfide lattice covering the original pyrrhotite. A significant wollastonite resource has been discovered and evaluated near Seeley&apos;s Bay in southeastern Ontario. The deposit occurs in Grenville Frontenac Terrane granulite facies rock within a calc-silicate skarn in contact with Proterozoic-age gabbro. The steeply-dipping and tightly-folded wollastonite skarn beds are interlayered with diopside and quartz-feldspar skarns in a southwest-plunging synclinorium. More than 9 million tonnes of a drill-proven and inferred resource grading 41 % wollastonite has been identified, as well as an additional 3 million tonnes grading 30%. Mineralogical and process test work with the wollastonite from this deposit has demonstrated the potential to produce a high purity, high aspect ratio wollastonite product.

INTRODUCTION As a set of management practices, "Knowledge Management" (KM) has disappointed many of its early advocates. The core notion behind KM can be summed up in the oft- quoted adage, "If we only knew what we know." KM describes a set of tools, practices, and approaches for using data, information, and expertise-knowledge-resident in an organization to improve the performance of that organization. The idea was incubated, hatched, and grew among some the largest and most successful companies in the world. Some of these companies created "Chief Knowledge Officers." Many more collectively invested billions in a huge range of KM efforts, all designed to use their organizations&apos; information and expertise to innovate, improve margins, sell, or accomplish any of a myriad of sound business goals. Some KM efforts were successful, and many were not.* Today, it is indisputably the case that KM as a named set of practices has fallen out of favor. Why, then, should KM be discussed at a conference on "Things that Actually Work" for plant operators? Because, in many instances, KM has actually worked. The practices that represent KM done right offer significant opportunities for plant operators to achieve real gains, especially in times of resource constraints and in the face of ever-increasing technical and commercial goals. The KM fad is all but over. The KM benefits continue to accrue to those who have applied the lessons learned from that fad, and implemented sound * Fair disclosure: I am not unbiased with respect to the potential impact of KM. "Airborne respirable coal dust capture by water sprays or wet scrubbers has been studied and developed over many decades as an engineering control to reduce dust exposure in coal mines and combat coal worker pneumoconiosis. Empirical relationships and deterministic models for particular dust capture experiments have previously been devised to show the key parameters involved in airborne coal dust capture. Many of the results from these models show that the significant parameters related to airborne dust capture are water spray pressure, water quantity, water droplet size, relative water droplet-to-dust particle velocity, and total operating air pressure of the scrubber. However, many airborne dust capture efficiency relationships and models developed for particular experiments cannot be readily applied to forecast the dust collection efficiency of different spray and scrubber design configurations, which rely on several key dimensional engineering measures. This study examines engineering measures from previous water spray and wet scrubber experiments conducted by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) to develop empirical models for wet collection of airborne dusts. A dimensionless empirical model developed for predicting airborne dust capture efficiency of water sprays and wet scrubbers is presented. IntroductionWater sprays have been one of the earliest mainstay engineering controls used to suppress respirable dust in underground coal mines. Some of the earliest reports of water spray usage on continuous mining machines indicated respirable coal mine dust reductions of 20 to 60 percent (Kobrick, 1970). Not long after the enactment of the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and others conducted extensive research into water spray and wet scrubber systems to control respirable dust in coal mines. The primary aspects of water spray dust control included prewetting for dust prevention, localized ventilation redirection and airborne dust capture, which are summarized in handbooks or best-practices guides (Kost, Yingling and Mondics, 1981; Kissell, 2003; Colinet et al., 2010). Initially, underground studies were conducted to identify the primary sources of dust during the mining processes and effective dust controls (Courtney, Jayaraman and Behum, 1978; Jankowski and Organiscak, 1983). Laboratory research systematically studied ventilation and airborne dust capture effects of water sprays and scrubbers to improve their application in underground coal mines (Tomb, Emmerling and Kellner, 1972; Divers and Janosik, 1978, 1980; Grigal et al., 1982; Ruggieri et al., 1983; Jayaraman, Jankowski and Kissell, 1985; Volkwein, Ruggieri et al., 1985; Jayaraman, Schroeder and Kissell, 1986; Divers, Jankowski and Kelly, 1987; Jones and James, 1987)."

I am Alfred E. Michon, Vice President- International for Burlington Northern Inc. I work for BN&apos;s holding company and my responsibilities include co-ordinating the activities of our eight subsidiary companies as they relate to international commerce--an increasingly important aspect of the overall business of our company. Until last April, I was President of the Fort Worth and Denver and Colorado and Southern railroads, subsidiaries of BN. Prior to that, I headed the marketing and pricing area of BN&apos;s coal transportation business. Based on my experience in the energy industry, both domestic and international, I would like to discuss the world-wide trend towards the reliance on low-sulfur coal in lieu of natural gas and oil for the generation of electricity. Since pontification on the energy scene world- wide is best left to consultants with scenario-spitting computers, let me in- stead emphasize this trend through two examples. First I will describe the regulatory and economic factors which have encouraged the replacement of natural gas by low sulfur coal as a boiler fuel in the US. BN&apos;s investments in track and equipment were instrumental in this conversion. Secondly, I will show how this same combination of factors has created a large demand for steam coal in the Far East. Again, our company&apos;s strategy is to facilitate conversion to coal overseas through timely and sufficient investments.

An experimental study was carried out to compare the results of laboratory column flotation versus conventional flotation for the cleaning of fine coals of different rank and their oxidized samples as well as discrete size fractions. Surface oxidation caused a significant reduction in the flotation yields achieved with both methods. However, the column flotation produced concentrates? of lower ash content. The recovery -size curve achieved with column was similar in shape to that obtained with conventional cell, with superior results in the region of fine fractions. The influence of some column operating parameters was also discussed.

This paper addresses the state and federal permit- ting requirements and regulatory constraints associated with the development of new "grass roots" surface coal mines in the Western United States. Since a major portion of new coal development in the West will be on federally leased coal in Wyoming, my comments are directed towards that geographical area. This will give the reader some insight into the current regulatory framework within which western mining companies must operate-i.e., the major applicable state and federal laws and regulations, the more important state and federal regulatory agencies, and the major construction and operating permits that are required. Before discussing the impact of the regulations on our business, I would like to tell you something of my company and then briefly discuss Exxon&apos;s forecast of the long range outlook for coal. Carter Mining is an Won affiliated surface coal mining company. Exxon became interested in the coal business in the mid 1960&apos;s with the recognition of the future need for alternative fuel sources. Since that time, it has acquired coal reserves located in Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, Arkansas, Texas, Illinois and West Virginia. Carter&apos;s first surface mine, the Rawhide Mine, located north of Gillette, Wyoming began production in August, 1977. Our second surface mine, Caballo, located just south of Gillette, began operating last October. We have a third block of federally leased coal just east of Gillette. By 1985 we anticipate Carter&apos;s western surface mines will be producing at an annual rate of 30 million tons, subject, of course, to successful market development efforts and regulatory considerations. Rawhide will ultimately have a permitted capacity of 24 MM tons per year. The coal at Rawhide is in two seams; one 80 feet in thickness and the other 20 feet (including a 6 to 10 foot parting). A large shovel is used to remove the overburden, and a similar shovel and dragline are used to mine the coal. Caballo has a 75 foot seam; otherwise it is similar in design and operation to the Rawhide Mine.

The risk that water quality will be degraded by mining activity can be evaluated using risk analysis techniques. Water quality impacts can occur where water-rock interactions with tailings, waste rock, or leached ore lead to increased loading of constituents into surface or groundwater. Constituent loads contributed by mining facilities are determined by the migration route and chemical evolution of mine water. Mass load contributions from mines can be determined by estimating the prototype pore water in contact with mining waste, predicting the rate and timing of flow, assessing the degree of geochemical attenuation, and modeling chemical mixing with natural surface or groundwater. Mining facility siting and design measures can alter the chemical evolution of mine water by varying the quantity or quality of flow. Stochastic risk management techniques provide a powerful tool for quantitatively identifying the environmental consequences of various siting and design alternatives.
