This Paper contains a comprehensive survey of the known electron-hole radiative recombination mechanisms in the family of III-V compounds. Because of space limitations, the luminescence properties of each III- V compound are not reviewed separately and exhaustively. Instead, the different known types of recombination processes are discussed in turn and exemplified with reference to the III- V compound in which they were first recognized, or are best understood. Electron-hole recombinations usually occur predominantly at impurities or lattice defects either introduced de1iberately or inadvertently present, but radiative intrinsic interband electron-hole recombinations, which occur in perfect crystals, have been observed. Recombination processes which involve the participation of impurities or lattice defects ("extrinsic" recombinations) considered include transitions in which a) free carriers recombine with carriers trapped at impurities ("free to bound" transitions) , b) electrons bound at donor impurities recombine with holes trapped at acceptor impurities ("donor-acceptor pair" recombinations), C) excitons bound to charged or neutral donor or acceptor impurities recombine radiatively (both "resonance" and "two-electron" "bound exci-ton" transitions have been observed), d) excitons bound to neutral donor or acceptor impurities recombine non-radiatively (an example of an "Auger" recombination), and e) excitons bound to impurities with the same number of valence electrons as the host atom which they replace ("isoelectronic " traps) recombine radiatively. In addition, Auger recombination processes involving one or more free carriers have been observed. These extrinsic processes all involve impurities which are present as point defects. Some apparently well-authenticated examples of the recombination of excitons bound to complex impurity-lattice defect centers including nearest-neighbor donor-acceptor pairs are also discussed. Identificalions of the transitions involved in stimulated emission from the direct gap III-V compounds are briefly reviewed. Although the examples of these recombination mechanisms are selected from the III-IV compounds ia this review, these processes have quite general relevance in semiconducting crystalline solids; irrdeed most of them have also been identified in the 11- VI compounds and elernental semzconductors. THE development of crystal growth and purification techniques in recent years and concurrent advances in the understanding of physical processes in solids has accelerated the development of a wide variety of solid-state electronic devices of proven utility. These de- vices are generally used for switching or amplifying operations in electrical circuits. Most solid-state circuit elements are very photosensitive. This photo-sensitivity is generally undesirable and the single-crystal chip forming the active portion of the solid-state device is mounted in an opaque container. The photosensitivity is made use of in phototransis-tors and photodiodes, which are among the most sensitive detectors of electromagnetic radiation particularly in the near infrared.' In these devices, light is converted into electrical power. The solid-state lamp utilizes the inverse effect, namely the conversion of electrical power into light. There is an increasing tendency to use single-crystal diodes rather than the earlier electroluminescent cells in which the active material is present as a powder embedded in a suitable dielectric.' The radiation is emitted at a rate far in excess of the thermal equilibrium rate for the frequencies and temperatures involved; i.e., luminescence occurs. The development of practically efficient solid-state lamps is at an early stage compared with solid- state circuit elements or even photodetectors. Considerable progress has been made in recent years, however.3 The present review is devoted to a survey of the radiative recombination processes in the semiconducting compound crystalline solids formed from elements in groups I11 and V in the periodic table. These materials exhibit the full range of known recombination processes in solids. In fact many of these processes were discovered in 111-V semiconductors. Nonradiative recombination processes, which control the lutninescence efficiency, are also discussed. Luminescence is efficiently excited in semiconductors through processes which produce large excess concentrations of free electrons and holes in the energy bands of the crystal. Transitions induced by lattice defects or impurities usually predominate in the recombination process. By contrast, luminescence in the conventional fluorescent lamp is excited by optical absorption at the luminescent impurity center itself (the activator) and/or at a second type of impurity center (the sensitizer). This latter type of photoluminescence process, occurring in doped ionic crystals with wide band gaps, is outside the scope of this review.4 I) ENERGY BAND DESCRIPTION OF ELECTRON STATES IN CRYSTALS The energy band description of the energy states available to an electron in a crystal forms the basis of our understanding of the empirical division of crystalline solids into metals, semiconductors, and insulators in accordance with their electrical and optical properties.' SEVERAL investigators have recently contributed to a clarification of the controversy concerning the allotropy of chromium. Ross and Hume-Rothery1 and Vasyutinskii et a1.2 have reported high-temperature X-ray data on unalloyed chromium from which they have concluded that no allotropic transformation occurs in this metal. Bechtoldt and vacher3 in their investigation of the Cr-Ni alloy system found no evidence for a transformation in chromium and Smart and Haynes4 in critically analyzing the data presented to date concerning this system could find no evidence for a eutectoid reaction in this system. The crack formation and propagation in the single -phase Cu-4 pct Ag alloys were studied. The alloys were loaded in mercury to various stress levels, the mercury was removed, and the specimen examined for cracks. Cracks were found to develop below the fracture stress; the frequency of such cracks increased with increasing stress level. Some cracks were nmpropagative. Fracture in mercury was found to occur by the link-up of cracks formed at various stress levels rather than by the growth and propagation of a single crack. If the mercury environment is removed prior to a critical amount of crack formation, then continued loading results in ductile fracture. The appearance of the cracks at selected grain boundaries is related to the relative orientation of the boundaries, as are the propaga-tive characteristics of the crack. The mercury interaction appears to be one of lowering the strength of the metal-metal bonds in the high-stress area of the grain boundary. GRIFFITH'S microcrack theory1 proposed a critical crack size above which a crack in an elastic material grows with decreasing energy at a stress of From his theory it was proposed that the presence of a liquid tends to lower the surface energy of the microcrack faces2 leading to a decrease in the critical crack size necessary for spontaneous fracture propagation. stroh3 proposed that the stress concentration at a grain boundary due to pile-up may initiate a microcrack at the grain boundary. petch4 and Stroh5 evaluated the stress distribution at the head of a pile-up in a polycrystal-line material and deduced that the critical crack size and hence of is dependent on the grain size. Experimental verification of this dependence was found by petch6 for hydrogen embrittlement of steel. Studies in stress-corrosion cracking7 have provided a picture of fracture which shows that initial separations occur in a scattered, independent fashion in regions of high tensile stress. A minimum or threshold stress is necessary to produce a sufficient stress concentration to initiate frac- ture. These separations join up to form a crack. The extension of fracture is largely discontinuous and consists of a joining up of cracks. In recent worka evidence of this scattered crack network was found in a Cu-Ag alloy embrittled by mercury. For the Cu alloy-Hg couple, the crack path has also been found to be dependent on the orientation of adjacent grains, and with the addition of zinc to mercury a reduction in embrittlement along with a change in fracture morphology was found.9 In this present study, a mercury-dewetting method was used to observe crack initiation and fracture morphology when a Cu-4 pct Ag alloy is deformed in mercury and Hg-Zn solutions. PROCEDURE Specimens of Cu-4 pct Ag were prepared as in previous crack-path studies.' The specimens were heated at 770°C for 24 hr and water-quenched Tension tests using a table-model Instron were carried out in mercury and in various concentrations of Hg-Zn. Loading was in steps up to the fracture stress, with the load being removed and the specimen examined for surface cracks at each step. The specimens were dewetted after each load to permit examination of the surface structure and rewetted prior to continued loading. The specimens were wetted by electro polish ing in phosphoric acid, rinsing in alcohol, and then immersing in a pool of mercury. Dewetting was accomplished by flame heating the specimen for 30 sec in a vacuum. Some surface contamination was found, but not enough to obscure crack configurations and grain boundaries. RESULTS Fracture Characteristics in Mercury. Fig. 1 is a stress-strain curve showing the progressive step-wise loading of the specimen. As may be seen from the graph, the first position stopped at a is at a stress 5000 psi below the expected fracture stress of 25,000 psi. Examination of the specimen after removal of mercury showed only one crack. The appearance of this crack at a stress far below the fracture stress of this alloy in mercury did not affect the stress-strain curve in any manner. The specimen was then recoated with mercury and deformation was continued (curve b, Fig. 1) raising the stress by 4000 psi, and the same procedure re~eated. This paper describes a process developed to recover coal, clays and pyrite from coal wastes. The process consists of fine grinding followed by coal and pyrite flotation which leaves the clays in the flotation pulp. A bituminous coal refuse containing 10% sulfur and 30% carbonaceous material was treated by this method to yield a coal product containing 4% sulfur, 10% ash; a pyrite product containing 45% sulfur (84% FeS2), 1% carbonaceous material; and a clay product containing 2% sulfur (3.5% FeS2). The coal yield was about 89%. The pyrite yield was about 77%. The process steps may be entirely flotation, or gravity separation (hydrocycloning) may be used to increase the pyrite : coal ratio in the flotation feed. Cost estimates for the process show a profit of $2.28 per ton of low pyrite grade refuse, but these do not include labor, maintenance, overhead and plant depreciation. The development of this process consisted of three parts: (1) exploratory tests, (2) op-timazation tests and (3) confirmatory tests. The objectionable qualities that sulfur imparts to coal have been commented upon from early times, and they have become more objectionable as the uses of coal have grown. In whatever form coal takes — raw, carbonized or gasified —the sulfur content remains objectionable, and therefore its compounds are removed as completely as possible. It has long been known that sulfur occurs in coal in different forms. In 1861, sulfur was said to exist in the state of sulfuric acid in combination with a base; in combination with iron as iron pyrites; as bisulfides of iron; and in combination with the organic elements of coal.' Pyritic sulfur is a term loosely used to cover the sulfur associated with iron in its various forms. The mineralogically recognized forms are pyrite (FeS2), pyrrhotite (Fe 1-x S) and marcasite (FeS2). The particle sizes of pyrites vary widely. Isolated grains of marcasite smaller than 15 microns have been found disseminated through coal.2 Hair-like "veins" of pyrite filling cracks in vitrain have been found. At the other extreme, lumps or nodules of pyrites large enough for removal by hand picking have been encountered. Organic sulfur, unlike pyritic sulfur, does not exist as discrete particles, but is instead intimately associated with the coal structure and thus it is impossible to remove it or reduce its concentration by physical or mechanical means.2 In the preparation of coal for its various markets, the pyrite minerals (pyrites) are separated from the raw coal feed. This separation process concentrates the pyrites in the tailings or other waste products. It would be desirable to recover these pyrites for three reasons: (1) Pyrites are potential sources of sulfur and iron. In 1967, for the fifth consecutive year, Free World consumption of sulfur exceeded production.3 Propelled by the shortage, the domestic price of sulfur has risen from $24 to $38 per long ton (bright). (2) The refuse, when placed in piles, becomes ignited. The pyrites (FeS2) bum, giving off SO,. Thus, the pyrites are a cause of air pollution. (3) Also, the pyrites undergo chemical reaction when exposed to air. The refuse is leached by waters which result in stream pollution due to the water-soluble iron and acidic reaction products. Coal refuse also contains coal minerals and clay minerals. Therefore, any process for recovering the pyrites must successfully separate them from the coal and clay minerals. In the study discussed here, ten different bituminous coal refuse samples were successfully upgraded in pyrite content. These samples represented a wide variety of coal waste materials from Pennsylvania and other states. The variabilities of the sulfur and coal contents are shown in Table I. The extremes are Sample J, a high sulfur-low coal, and Sample B, a low sulfur-high coal. Definitions of some of the symbols or terms used in this report are given below: Mesh size—Tyler standard mesh screen sieves with an opening based on the square root of two. Fe —Indicates iron, as determined by a stannous reduction-dichromatic oxidation method. S—Indicates sulfur, as determined by the ASTM "Eschka" method for sulfur in coal.

This study of aluminum-copper alloys had two aims: 1) To determine the effect of the amount and distribution of a second phase, CuAl2, on the creep-rupture strength, ductility, and fracture characteristics of the alloys. The work of Gemmell and grant' on single-phase aluminum-copper alloys provided a basis for the present study. 2) To attempt to provide a relation between the microstructure and strength of two-phase alloys deformed at comparatively high temperatures (greater than 0.45 T,). The creep behavior of the two-phase magnesium alloys Mg;Ce and Mg-A1, has been treated by Roberts. 9 In work reported by Sully and Hardy4 and by Underwood, Marsh, and Manning~ on A1-Cu two-phase alloys, and also in a portion of the work of Gemmell and grant,' aging took place during the creep tests. 'In the present work, overaged aluminum-copper alloys were subjected to creep deformation at two temperatures, 500 and 700OF. The overaging treatments to produce the precipitate dispersions were performed prior to the test, at temperatures which were the same as the ultimate respective test temperatures. Hence, the present study is concerned with the creep behavior of stable (in contrast to "underaged") two-phase A1-Cu alloys, i.e., alloys in which no depletion of the solid-solution matrix occurred during: creep. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE A 2 and a 3 pct Cu alloy, supplied by Alcoa, were studied; Table I shows the compositions. The grain size of the specimens, 0.9 to 1.0 mm, was achieved by annealing the machined test bars for 2 hr at 1000°F, followed by furnace-cooling to 900°F, and homogenizing for 4 hr. Both compositions are in the single-phase condition at 900°F. Two types of overaged dispersions, termed "over-aged I" and "overaged 11" were prepared after the grain size and the homogenization anneals. The overaged I alloys were prepared by quenching to room temperature after homogenization, aging at either 500' or 700°F for 72 hr, and air-cooling to room temperature. The overaged I1 alloys were prepared by furnace-cooling after homogenization, to either 500' or 700°F, and holding at the necessary temperature for 72 hr. The times for furnace-cooling from 900°F to 700° and 500°F were, respectively, about 2 and 3.5 hr. The structures of the A1-2 pct Cu alloys are shown in Fig. 1 (overaged I) and in Fig. 2 (overaged 11). A comparison of Figs. 1 and 2 shows that in the overaged I alloys the precipitate particles along the grain boundaries are much more closely spaced and the grain boundaries are straighter than they are in the overaged I1 alloys. Further, the particle size and spacing in the grains are smaller than in the overaged I1 alloys. Microstructures of the A1-3 pct Cu alloys have not been shown; the structures of these alloys differed from those of the A1-2 pct Cu alloys only in that the distribution density of the particles was greater. The creep specimens had a gage section 1 in. long with a diameter of 0.155 to 0.195 in. Before testing, specimens were electropolished in a solution of 100 cc glacial acetic acid, and 30 cc of 60 pct perchloric acid, at 40' to 50°F, at 24 v. The specimens were kept refrigerated prior to testing to avoid precipitation at room temperature. Constant stress creep tests were conducted; the load was applied 75 min after heating of the specimens to test temperature had begun. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Creep-Rupture—Fig. 3 shows the log stress-log rupture life plotfor the overaged alloys studied, and also for the underaged A1-2 pct Cu alloy.' At 700°F, the stress-rupture life relationship is nearly independent of both the amount of precipitate (i.e., composition) and of the type of overaging treatment (i.e., precipitate dispersion). At 500°F it is apparent that the increase in rupture life that was ex-

The "semi-pellet" sintering method developed and currently being used at the Fuji Iron & Steel's Hirohata Works is discusssd. It is shown that the method makes fine-sized material easily sinterable and increases sinter production. The operation can be incorporated readily into conventional sintering plants. Sintering plant raw materials currently being used in the Hirohata Works consist of 40 pct pyrite cinder, 40 pct fines resulting from crushing and screening of imported ores, and 20 pct others, such as mill scale and iron sands. Pyrite cinder, a major component in the sinter feed, has been getting finer since 1952, due to the increased grinding required for the improvement of the results in the iron sulfide flotation and to the adoption of FluoSolid roasters in sul-furic acid plants; some fines pass 100-mesh sieve almost completely. Increased use of the fine-sized pyrite cinders in the sinter raw mix resulted in such difficulties as decreased bed permeability, uneven firing conditions, and low yield. In an attempt to study the cause and to find a remedy for this problem, a series of experiments were made, using an 80-kg experimental sintering pan. As a result it was established that, by rolling the fine-sized pyrite cinders into small balls of 10 to 3 mm diam (hereafter called semi-pellets) and mixing them into the sinter raw mix, the bed permeability was improved, the sintering time shortened, and the yield and production rate increased. It is proposed that this new method be called the semi-pellet sintem'ng. In recent years the pelletizing process has taken the spotlight in the agglomeration field for treating fine-sized ores here in Japan as well as in the U.S. and Europe. This process produces pellets suitable for the blast furnace charge as such, and consists of three major operations: fine grinding, balling, and firing. With regard to the firing technique, some problems still appear unsolved. In the semi-pellet sintering, however, several ad- vantages can be claimed: the balling operation is relatively simple because only small-sized balls are shown to be acceptable and the operation can be readily incorporated into the conventional sintering plant, since only balling, not grinding or firing, equipment is needed. Basic test work on the process was initiated in 1954 and favorable results were obtained. Accordingly a pilot plant was built in 1955 and the test work was continued. The semi-pellets thus prepared in the pilot plant were tested further by USing them in the actual sintering pan and their beneficial effects ascertained. In late 1956 a drum-type balling machine (2.4X4 m) was installed and it went into operation in April 1957 in conjunction with the Greenawalt sintering plant (8 pans having dimensions of 7.2 m in length, 3 m in width, and 0.3 m in depth). In October 1958 a cone-type pelletizer, with a 2.2 m diam, and later a disk-type pelletizer were further added in the plant. In the DL sintering plant (2000 tpd), newly built in July, 1960, four disk-type pelletizers (3.2 m diam, 10 tph capacity) were installed. By mixing the semi-pellets thus prepared with the feed, the sintering operation was found to be greatly improved. The results of the basic test work, and the equipment and operation of the semi-pellet sintering operation at the Hirohata Works will be described. ON THE SINTERING CHARACTERISTICS OF FINE SIZED PYRITE CINDERS To ascertain the effect of addition of fine-sized pyrite cinders on the sintering characteristics, a series of measurements on bed permeability was carried out by varying the size distribution of pyrite cinders. The composition of the raw mix used in the tests was fixed at 50 pct pyrite cinder, 20 pct Larap magnetite fines, 30 pct sinter return, and 5 pct coke; only the size distribution of the pyrite cinder was varied. The in situ leach mining process generates a waste stream that is high in sulfates, total dissolved solids, and radium 226. During the mining phase, the volume of the waste stream is relatively low and consists primarily of the bleed stream. During the restoration phase, larger volumes of waste water are generated. These waste streams require environrnentally sound disposal. The low net evaporation rate in the Coastal Bend area precludes pond evaporation as a feasible disposal alternative. Reverse osmosis is a practical method of reducing the volume of the waste water handled, but the concentrated waste stream from the reverse osmosis unit must be disposed properly. Deep well injection into highly saline reservoirs is considered a sound method of disposing of the liquid waste generated by in situ mining in the Gulf Coast uranium district. Thirteen injection wells have been permitted to serve the disposal needs of the leach mining industry in Texas. Of these 13, 11 have actually been drilled. Seven applications are pending. The injection zones for the permitted wells range from depths of 3050 to 6200 feet. Pressure limitations imposed on these wells range from 500 psi to 1350 psi. The following criteria are used to determine the desirability of a disposal well site: 1. A minimal number of nearby, improperly plugged borings which penetrate the disposal zone; 2. Minimal crustal disturbance; 3. Sufficient salinity of the water contained in the disposal zone; 4. Protection of oil and gas producing zones; and 5. Sand of sufficient permeability and areal extent to handle the desired volume without fracturing the reservoir. 1. Improperly plugged borings: During the early part of the century, oil wells, gas wells and test holes were drilled using cable tool equipment, often with a minimum amount of surface casing. Production casing, when it was set, was often partly removed when the holes were abandoned. Thus, wells drilled prior to 1940 frequently have less than 100 feet of surface casing and either no production casing or the upper part of the production casing removed. Additionally, these holes are often plugged only with mud. The close proximity of these holes to an injection well location are a concern in that they can provide an avenue for injection-depth fluids to migrate up the bore hole and jeopardize shallower fresh water reservoirs. Usually, where there are more than 6 or 8 poorly plugged borings in a 2 1/2 mile radius of the well site, it is preferable to examine deeper zones for disposal well potential. The deeper zones are especially attractive where the borings are not in a cluster, which renders monitoring more difficult. Often, even the deeper disposal zones are penetrated by a few improperly plugged borings. When this condition arises, the potential for leakage through the borings can be addressed in the following ways. a. Demonstration that the static head in the boring is higher than the anticipated increase in bottom hole pressure generated at the boring by the disposal well. A 100 psi differential between these two pressures is recommended. The calculated increased pressure at a boring caused by injection should be refined using annual bottom hole pressure measurements in the disposal well. Figure 1 illustrates an injection pressure map which can be overlain on the oil well map to determine the anticipated increase in pressure expected at each oil, gas or abandoned hole. b. Shallow ground water monitoring. A shallow monitor well is drilled next to the boring and both pressure and quality measurements are made periodically in the shallow well. c. Disposal zone monitoring. Recently there has been a tendency for regulators to require disposal depth monitor wells instead of shallow well monitoring. We consider disposal depth monitoring to be a less effective method of monitoring because it provides only indirect evidence of potential problems. Assumptions have to be made for the unplugged borings, such as mud weight, that are not addressed by the disposal zone monitoring program. There is little improvement with this system to that discussed in "a" above. A shallow zone monitoring program, however, yields direct evidence of a developing problem with an unplugged boring. Leakage by the boring will be detected quickly by an abnormal increase in pressure in the shallow well. Quality monitoring will detect upward migration of poor quality fluids. The pressure data provide an early warning of impending leakage; the quality monitoring will detect actual fluid migration.

THERE have been numerous papers in the literature1 on the subjects of secondary and tertiary recrystalli-zation in silicon steels. Secondary re crystallization is believed to occur in silicon steel by either a surface-energy phenomenon such as in the usual development of cube texture or by a second-phase phenomenon such as in the usual production of cube-on-edge texture, (110)[001]. Tertiary recrystallization in silicon steel is thought to be a surface-energy phenomenon in which, for example, grains having a (110) plane parallel to the sheet grow at the expense of other grains in the matrix including those having a (100) plane parallel to the plane of the sheet. In all these instances, the orientations involve either a preferred (100) or (110) plane in the plane of the sheet. Until very recently, there had been no experimental evidence reported of the occurrence of a texture by secondary or tertiary recrystallization that involves a (111) plane in the plane of the sheet, although Kohler reported that grains having the (111) plane parallel to the sheet surface can also grow by a surface energy mechanism. Stickels observed a secondary texture in iron described as "near {554}(225)" about 5 deg from {lll}(211).3 Mee reported that in a vacuum-remelted commercial 3 pct Si steel {lll}(hkl) secondary recrystallization took place in a high vacuum and in pure hydrogen.4 Recently in our Laboratory, large-grained structures such as shown in Fig. 1 having an orientation near (111)[211] or (111)[2ii] have been observed. The arrows point to areas of relatively small matrix grains of the kind that the much larger (111) grains consumed while growing. It is of interest that the matrix grains of samples annealed at 2000°F were essentially the same size as those in samples annealed at 2200°F, a matrix-grain-size stability that is characteristic of secondary recrystallization processes. A torque disc taken from Grain 4 of the sample shown in Fig. 1 revealed a very flat magnetic-torque curve, as expected, with a maximum torque of 7000 dyne-cm per cu cm compared to the typical 180,000 dyne-cm per cu cm observed for conventional (110)[001] textured material. A back-reflection Laue pattern for Grain 4 is shown in Fig. 2 and indicates a near-perfect (111)[211] orientation. The other six numbered grains in the sample of Fig. 1 had a similar orientation. The small circles next to each number were the target areas for the X-ray beam. The starting material was an 0.011-in.-thick oriented silicon steel, (110)[001] texture, containing 3 pct Si. It was lightly pickled, cold-rolled to 0.005 in., and annealed 4 hr at 2200°F within a nickel box (not gas-tight) inside a tube furnace through which dry hydrogen was flowing. The mixed homogeneous and heterogeneous kinetics of the thermal decomposition of tungsten hexacarbonyl were studied by employing a batch reactor. The system was such that a sample of tungsten hexacarbonyl could be injected into the preheated reactor, and the progress of the reaction followed by a simple pressure measurement. Both the homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions were found to be first order, and approximate activation energies were determined for each reaction. It is shown that the dis-proportionation of carbon monoxide to give carbon and carbon dioxide cannot be the source of carbon in tungsten deposits prepared by this reaction. The kinetics of the thermal decomposition of tungsten hexacarbonyl have been investigated as part of a continuing study by the U.S. Bureau of Mines on the decomposition of organometallic compounds. Reactions involving the thermal decomposition of metal carbonyls have a potential application in the preparation of pure metals and fine metal powders. Indeed, it was these applications which provided the impetus for much of the early work involving the carbonyls of nickel1 and iron.' The relative lack of study of other metal carbonyls can be traced to the comparative difficulty in synthesizing these compounds. The most common use for tungsten hexacarbonyl has been as an intermediate in vapor-phase plating.7'8 However, attempts to obtain a carbon-free deposit of tungsten by this method have not been successful, and some investigators have taken advantage of the carbon contamination and used this process to form tungsten carbide deposits.lo Other investigators have studied the thermodynamic properties11"14 and molecular structure of tungsten hexacarbonyl. However, very little is known about the kinetics of this thermal decomposition, the mechanisms involved," or the source of carbon in the resulting plate. In contrast, studies have been made of the kinetics of the thermal decomposition of nickel tetracarbonyl, iron pentacarbonyl, and molybdenum hexacarbonyl.'l It has been found that these thermal decompositions occur by a mechanism which is partially heterogeneous in nature. Information available on the equilibrium constants for the decomposition of tungsten hexacarbonyl was used to determine a temperature range, 500" to 560°K, in which the reaction could be expected to be essentially complete. APPARATUS The apparatus used allowed the injection of a sample of tungsten hexacarbonyl into a preheated batch reactor and the use of a simple pressure measurement to follow the progress of the reaction in the sealed reactor. The pressure was sensed by means of a pressure transducer (Consolidated Electrodynamics Corp., 0.3 pct)* capable of operating at the *Reference to specific products is made to facilitate understanding and does not imply endorsement of such brands by the Bureau of Mines._______ reaction temperature. This type of sensing element was chosen to avoid the problem of condensation of the sublimed carbonyl in the capillary tubing leading to any type of remote pressure-sensing device. stirring was provided by rotating the entire apparatus. Glass beads placed in the reactor provided a pulsating agitation. To minimize thermal gradients in the reactor walls, the reactor was constructed of aluminum. The support tube which held the reactor in the furnace was thin-walled stainless steel to minimize heat conduction out of the reactor. As a result of these measures, a nearly uniform temperature (°C) was maintained throughout the reactor. Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of the apparatus. The small gear motor rotated the entire apparatus at about 200 rpm. The bearings shown at the ends of the air cylinder were perforated to allow air to be fed to the charging piston and to allow inert gas to be fed to the reactor during the preheating period. The sample was simultaneously injected and sealed inside the reactor by operation of the air piston. Fig. 2 shows a cross section of the air cylinder and the adjoining portion of the support tube leading to the reactor. The sample carrier is shown in place at the right-hand end of the injection rod extending from the air piston. The piston is shown in the retracted position, as it would be prior to the start of an experiment. The small Teflon gasket which encircled the sample carrier at the end of the injection rod sealed the reactor when the sample was injected. This seal was maintained throughout the test by maintaining air pressure on the piston. The sample carrier was a 2-in. section of thin-walled, -in.-diam nickel tubing with an internal blank about 1 in. from the base and with the base end sealed.

HE present paper has its origin in an attempt A by the author, extending over the last several years, to understand the influence of the magnetic properties of the constituent atoms upon the various properties of metals and alloys. During this study the author has been impressed by the important role which magnetism plays in the many facets of metallurgy. In writing this paper he has attempted to convey to his colleagues some concept as to the role magnetism will play in the future development of metallurgy. In some of the subjects herein discussed, such as the influence of magnetism upon phase boundaries and upon mechanical properties, only general thermodynamical properties associated with ferromagnetism are introduced. For these subjects, it is not anticipated that any serious differences of opinion will be encountered. A discussion of the other subjects requires the adoption of a quite specific model of the magnetic structure of the metal. This model is discussed under "Magnetic Shells and Their Interactions." The simple model adopted in this paper has been criticized' as being mathematically inconsistent. This criticism has been ably silenced by Dr. W. J. Carr' of this laboratory. The simple model adopted in this paper has been criticized as being inconsistent with observations on magnetic structure using neutron diffraction. This apparent discrepancy has been resolved by Bader3 who has shown that the finite velocity of neutrons prevents neutron beams from detecting the anti-ferromagnetic structure of the type predicted by the simple model adopted in this paper. Magnetic Shells and Their Interactions An electronic shell of an atom is specified by two symbols.' The first symbol is a number and denotes the total quantum number of the shell. The second symbol is a letter and denotes the orbital angular momentum of each electron within the shell. The letters s, p, d, f are used to denote an orbital angular momentum of 0, 1, 2, 3, respectively, in units of h/2a, where h is Planck's constant. As we pass from scandium to nickel in the first transition period, we eraduallv fill the 3d shell. This shell is responsible for ferromagnetism and hence may be called the magnetic shell. The component of the orbital angular momentum along some specified direction must be an integral multiple of h/2~. Thus, for a d electron this component can have any one of the values —2, —1, 0, 1, 2 times h/2a. In addition to its orbital angular momentum, each electron has an intrinsic angular momentum, hereafter called spin, due to a rotation about its own axis. This spin can have either of two components + Yz (h/2a) or — Yz (h/2~) along the specified direction. A fundamental principle of atomic structure, known as Pauli's exclusion principle, is that no two electrons in a given shell may have identical components of orbital angular momentum simultaneous with identical components of spin. The 3d shell thus may have at most ten electrons. Since an intrinsic angular momentum of a charged particle is necessarily associated with a magnetic moment, the spin of an electron may be thought of as referring to either this angular momentum or to the associated magnetic moment. The electron configuration of the ground state of the isolated atoms in the first transition row is reproduced in Table I. The superscript represents the number of electrons in each shell. For the purpose of this paper, the most important principle of atomic structure relates to the manner in which electrons are added to a shell as the atomic number is increased. This principle, commonly known as the principle of highest multiplicity or more simply as Hund's rule, states that within a given shell the maximum number of electrons have spins pointing in the same direction as is consistent with Pauli's exclusion principle. An application of this principle to the d shell is illustrated in Fig. 1, where the spin structure is given for shells containing from 1 to 10 electrons. The physical basis of Hund's rule is the exchange energy discussed first by Heisenberg in 1928. C.-This paper is very timely since the Philippine Islands are presumably open to the enterprise of the American driller, whereas much of the territory in that part of the world is closed to us. The United States has ambitious plans for the operation of a great merchant marine, which is to be oil burning in the main, and it takes but a glance at the world map to see the strategic advantage of oil supplies in the Philippines for such marine operations. It is a little difficult to understand why more attention has not been given to the Philippines, in spite of the difficulties attending development in these islands. A number of American oil companies are, I believe, at the present moment taking an interest in the possibilities of the Philippines. Important factors in the formulation of opinion regarding the importance of the oil deposits of the Philippines, as brought out by Mr. Pratt,1 are the point of view and the breadth of experience of the examining geologist. The average oil geologist, whose experience has been mainly in the Appalachian region, the Mid-continent, or Louisiana, or possibly even in California, on seeing the narrowness of the basins, the closeness of the folding, and the presence of igneous rocks here and there, would be likely to draw unfavorable conclusions as to the possibilities of the Philippine Islands. Geologists visiting that region should be familiar with the geological conditions of oil occurrence in Japan, Formosa, the East Indies, or in the Baku district, and their conclusions should be formulated with the knowledge and understanding of the occurrence of oil in those regions rather than in the United States.

The material that forms the basis of this paper was collected in the spring of 1922, during a ten-day visit to Ducktown by the writer in the company of Prof. L. C. Graton. The time available for the work was far too short to allow anything like a thorough study of the deposits, and structural and stratigraphic questions, though they have an important bearing on the origin of the primary ores, were necessarily left untouched. Attention was focussed on the zone of oxidation and enrichment; and by devoting most of our time to the upper levels, open pits, and old workings, and examining the deeper levels only thoroughly enough to obtain a fair idea of the nature of the primary sulfide ore, we were able to make a reasonably complete survey of the various orebodies. With this field work for a background, the writer later made a study, in the Harvard laboratories, of the specimens obtained during the visit. As some of the facts brought to light by this study appear to be new, it seems worth while to set forth the outstanding features and a proposed explanation of them. Much of the Ducktown material that is obviously of greatest significance, as regards oxidation and enrichment, is soft and crumbly. Notwithstanding the desirability of gaining from such material all possible information as to its mineral composition and textural relationships, but little has heretofore been learned regarding it; but, by suitable preparation of this material in connection with the present study, it has been possible to examine it under the microscope without any disturbance of its texture and about as satisfactorily as if it were hard, fresh ore. The information thus gained has contributed measurably to the results set forth in this paper.

Aside from having a usable product and good mining conditions, the greatest asset for a profitable coal mining organization is an effective mine maintenance program. The first step in acquiring this is the presence of good mechanics-men who have a desire to be mechanics and who want to know more about the design and control of the machines in their charge. The knowledge and ability to be found in a good mechanic is the result of ambition, curiosity, and determination. With these qualities as a start, the aspiring mechanic can launch his career if he begins learning all he can about mechanics, electricity, and hydraulics. The path is rough, but the goal is rewarding. Mining machinery probably absorbs as much or more abuse than any other heavy equipment in use today. And when one considers the conditions under which much of the repair work must be done, it can be seen that the mine operator needs the best of men and tools to perform the service. MOTORS AND POWER SUPPLY Mining machines, from their inception, have utilized the electric motor; and down through the years of mechanization, this power source has undergone many changes to better adapt it to the job. The first motors used were large, heavy-framed, open d-c motors (direct current), using a series or shunt winding. A motor having one or more field coils connected in series and themselves in series with the armature, is called a series motor (Fig. 1). The series motor had the advantage of quickly developing starting torque, and it was, and still is, the best motor for locomotive or shuttle car tramming service. The writer has devoted a number of years to practical operations and to the study of geology in the oil fields. In consequence, he has been brought to investigate the theories advanced to account for the accumulation of oil and gas in commercial deposits. It is the result of these investigations and his personal conclusions that he wishes to sum up in this paper. The writer is an advocate of the organic origin of petroleum found in pools. He has been led to believe that the present theories of oil and gas accumulations are incomplete and, in certain respects, incorrect, although they may embody certain elements of truth; that the forces that are called upon to explain the movement are only secondary forces in the process, and insufficient, by themselves, to cause this movement; and that the phenomenon of accumulation is of much larger order than heretofore admitted and bears an intimate relation with the general as well as with the local deformations of the crust and is a direct consequence and a mechanical effect of these deformations to which the term " diastrophie " has been applied. As a complement to this theory, the writer offers a new interpretation of the "rock pressure" and of the mechanism of the "sealing up" of this pressure in oil and gas pools. The Anticlinal Theory The theory most generally accepted to account for the accumulation of hydrocarbons in commercial deposits is the anticlinal or structural theory. This theory, the principles of which have been laid down by I. C. White, Orton, Winehell and others, and which has since been modified and perfected, is too well known to need a detailed statement. Fluorspar is found in most of the states from the Rocky Mountains westward, and commercial production of the mineral has been reported from Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Washington. The map in Fig. 1 indicates the general distribution of many of these deposits but it is by no means complete. In the summer of 1926 the writer examined certain deposits of fluorspar in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico and Washington; in November, 1927, revisited the Jamestown, Colo., district, and in earlier years examined deposits in Colorado and New Mexico. Based on notes of his own and on descriptions and other data by H. A. Aurand, H. W. Davis, R. B. Ladoo, V. C. Heikes, W. D. Johnston, Jr., and by producers of fluorspar, he prepared the following brief descriptions of deposits and estimates of reserves of fluorspar, originally for the use of the subcommittee on fluorspar of the Joint Committee on Foreign and Domestic Mining Policy and on Industrial Preparedness respectively of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Descriptions of many fluorspar deposits in various western states and districts have been published. It is not feasible to summarize this literature here, but the appended bibliography will indicate to the interested reader what papers are available. Arizona Fluorspar has been reported as occurring in Arizona in the following localities: near Duncan, Greenlee County; near Naco, Tombstone, and Paradise, Cochise County; Black Mountain, Mojave County; 25 miles southwest of Tucson, and at Helvetia and Silver Bell, Pima County; near Mammoth mine, Pinal County; in Yavapai County, 7 miles from Aguila, and in the Bradshaw Mountains; and near Dome, Yuma County. Production has come principally from the Castle Dome district, Yuma County, with minor quantities from Greenlee, Pima and Yavapai counties. AT the New York meeting of the American Institute of Mining-and Metallurgical Engineers held in February, 1926, W. H. Bassett and J. C. Bradley presented a paper entitled "Exudations on Copper Castings."§ The purpose of the present paper, as the title suggests, is to call attention to somewhat similar phenomena which the authors have encountered in brass and bronze. From a study of the examples given, a more-or-less speculative theory of "inverse segregation" is advanced. PROTUBERANCES ON ADMIRALTY BRASS In the rolling mill of the Scovill Manufacturing Co., there have been found quite commonly bars of certain alloys which had a sort of shaggy roughness on the surface due to slight metallic protuberances. No special attention was paid to these until some bars were found on which these protuberances were heavy enough at the bottom of the bars to produce a blistered appearance. A sample of the protuberances was milled off the surface of the bar illustrated (Fig.. 1a) and upon analysis was found to contain 66.66 percent. copper, 4.02 per cent. tin and .03 . per cent. lead, whereas the average composition of the bar was 70.21 per cent. copper, 1.21 per cent. tin, and .01 per cent. lead. A sample of the shaggy-rough protuberances at the -very top of a bar was also analyzed and was found to contain 2.45 per cent. tin, indicating that it was probably of the same origin as the blistered areas. These results were not entirely unexpected for previous analyses of this alloy had -revealed that the surface was richer in tin than the rest of the bar. This, of course, is contrary to what we would expect from a consideration of the equilibrium diagram and has been called "inverse segregation."

The practice of dentistry, particularly the construction of artificial dentures and "bridges," involves a unique and difficult application of the precious-metal alloys. Appliances used in the mouth are continuously exposed to corrosive agencies which can hardly be described as mild, and must remain free from tarnish and be substantially immune to corrosion. Limitations with respect to space and weight demand high physical properties, while complexity of form requires ease of working. The high corrosion resistance required necessitates the use of alloys of high precious metal content. The usual expedient of resorting to mechanical working to produce the requisite strength and stiffness cannot be utilized because of the frequency of annealing and soldering operations. To meet these difficult conditions manufacturers of dental goods were early led, unknowingly perhaps, to the production of precipitation-hardening or temperable alloys. The excellent properties of iridium-platinum may have suggested the addition of platinum metals to the conventional gold-silver-copper alloys to produce greater strength and hardness. It was found that such quarternary alloys retained their high physical properties after passing through the usual soldering process; i. e., heating to 750° to 800" C. and cooling naturally in the air. Later it was discovered that they could be softened and rendered more ductile by heating to the same temperature and quenching in water. These early examples of precipitation hardening, for years the common knowledge of dental practitioners and laboratory technicians, escaped the attention of the scientific world and discovery of the transformation which was responsible for this hardening was disclosed by the Russian investigators of the system Au-Cu, Kurnakow, Schemtschushny and Zasedatelev~,(~)$ although the optimum conditions for securing good properties in aged alloys were not given attention.
