Uranium exploration over a wide area of the Southern Frame Embayment, South Australia, has defined a number of Lower Tertiary fluvial palaeochannels incised in older rocks. The buried channels contain similar stratigraphicsequences of interbedded sand, silt, and clay, probably derived from the adjacent uranium-rich Olarv Provinee. Uranium mineralization is pervasive within two major palaeochannels, and four small uranium deposits have been found in the basal sands of these channel sequences, at the margins of extensive tongues of limonitic sand.One of the channels is examined in detail with respect to channel morphology, stratigraphy, and rock alteration and the geology and ore controls of the contained uranium deposits are described.A geochemical zonation reflected by variation in limonite, pyrite, carbon, and humic malleI' is defined across one of the deposits. A genetic model is proposed suggesting formation by a uraniferous geochemical cell which migrated down the stream gradient and concentrated uranium on its lateral margins adjacent to the channel bank.

The O.K. deposit occurs within a belt of cherts and spilitised basic volcanics near the western margin of the Hodgkinson Province. The tabular to lenticular shape and gross conformability of the ore bodies; the common occurrence of colloform, framboidal and banded textures in the ores; the lack of significant alteration adjacent to the massive ore horizons and the apparent restriction of stockwork mineralization to the foot-wall side of the massive ore zone at the O.K. mine, all favour a syngenetic origin for the massive sulfide bodies. Furthermore, the micro- structural evidence suggests that the ores have undergone the same deformational history as the country rocks. The invariable association of the ores with spilites; the S isotope values and Co-Ni contents of the pyrites, together with the primitive metal assemblage (Fe, Cu, minor Zn) strongly favour a basic magmatic source for the sulfides. It is suggested-that the sulfides were probably precipitated sub aqueous- ly during a hiatus in volcanic activity. The O.K. deposit is of the cupreous pyrite variety, but unlike other well known occurrences of this type, it does not con- stitute part of an ophiolite complex. The environmental and social responsibilities of the mining industry have long been recognized by the industry itself, but during the past decade it became one of the main targets for the more radical members of the community. This came as something of a shock to an industry which had always considered that it had acted responsibly within the standards of the day. As far back as early 1968, the Australian Min- ing Industry Council (AMIC) was clipping from newspapers the odd letter written by environmen- talists and critics of mining activities. In those days every such letter was carefully studied to ensure that AMIC, if not having the answers, at least had an understanding of the types of argu- ments then starting to be used against mining activity and in favour of environmental preserva- tion. Within 18 months, the infrequent letter to the editor had become a flood of such letters and feature articles, and the environmentalists' attack on mining activities had been launched in all its Vehemence.

The problem of metering fine particulate material at low flowrate is often encountered in metallurgical experiment. This note describes a feeder which wa developed to provide metered flows of copper sulphide concentrate in the range of 0'1-0'7 g/min.It is believed that the present device is easier to operate than previously described feeders (e.g. Hamor and Smith, 1971). It may have applications in the field of analytical chemistry, as well as in metallurgical investigations.

The introduction of large diameter holes to underground mining has provided the first opportunity to apply near spherical charges in production scale blasts instead of the convent- ional long cylindrical charges generally used in stope and pillar mining. A modified version of the cratering prin- ciple was applied in the blast design in extrac- ting ore across a horizontal area of a stope or pillar. The new rock breaking technique has developed into the Vertical Crater Retreat (VCR) mining system and eliminated raise boring, slot cutting and dilution of the ore by back- fill material. Furthermore it has reduced labour and time requirements thus becoming not only a low cost method of mining but the safest method of underground mining known today. Exceptionally fine muck is provided with a minimum of damage by blasts to walls and re- treating backs of the stope or pillar. The VCR method can also be used for drop- raising, and for the excavation of underground cavities for almost any purpose . The proper explanation of the breakage mechanism of the near spherical charges opposite to the cylindrical charges yet to be found. Giving the keynote address in the final session of a conference dealing with closely related topics has a disadvantage in that much of what can be said has been said. It also has an advantage, however, because it presents the speaker with the opportunity to integrate and analyse the material presented by the various speakers. I would like to look to the near future in Aust- ralia and the United States of America, to the risks, problem areas, and changes of a rapidly evolving post-industrial era-an era we are begin- ning to experience where industry no longer `calls the tune'. We miners have been quick to point out and emphasize, that ours is a `high-risk' industry in the world of business and commerce. Yet, clearly those who have survived, and been successful, have learned to anticipate and cope with risk and change. This ability has been a distinguishing feature of the industry's leaders who, in market studies and commodity selection, exploration and development, mine planning, metallurgical pro- cessing, and general administration and operation 1. identify areas of risk or inevitable change, 2. analyse, test and quantify those factors of risk or change, and 3. design methods, systems, equipment to elim- inate, moderate, or control or economically compensate for predicted risks or changes.

As the gold price, and consequently ore reserves, improved in the late 1970's, a programme of upgrading the gold recovery circuit at the Phoenix treatment plant at Central Norseman was initiated. The introduction of oxidised ore with a high clay content from the North Royal open cut caused a reduction in thickening and filtering capacities, which in turn restricted plant throughput and increased gold losses in the residue solutions. Test work into alternative washing facilities showed that the installation of a five stage counter current decantation system would restore throughput and reduce soluble gold losses. Installation of the system achieved the objectives of increased plant tonnage, increased proportions of the high grade oxidised ore in the mill feed and decreased gold losses in the residue waters.

For the last 4 years political leaders have found a new subject on which they can safely generalize wihout creating opposition. That sub- ject is commodity prices. Since the four-fold increase in OPEC crude oil prices, public atten- tion has focussed as never before on the subject of commodity prices. To advocate stabilizing com- modity prices is akin to supporting motherhood or peace or better schooling. Everyone gives lip service to the concept that stable commodity prices are desirable. It is easier to state the principle than to achieve it. Prices that are stable in terms of one currency may be clearly unstable in terms of a different currency. This has become a troublesome matter since 1971, when the world's leading trading currencies were set free to float in relation to each other. To illustrate: consider copper prices in the interval between the end of 1974 and the end of 1977. During those 3 years, the copper price in pounds sterling on the London Metal Exchange rose by 25 per cent. During that period, however, in terms of the USA dollar equivalent, the price was unchanged. And during that period, in terms of the German mark equivalent the price shrank by 13 per cent while the Japanese yen equivalent f.11 1k

Laboratory leach tests of Nabarlek uranium ore carried out by the Australian Atomic Energy Commission to compare the effectiveness of Caro's Acid1 (permonosulphuric acid) as an alternative oxident to pyrolusite indicated reduced acid consumption in leaching and lime savings in neutralisation of tailings liquors when using Caro's Acid. Interox Chemicals Pty. Ltd. arranged a plant trial for Caro's Acid at Queensland Mines Nabarlek Plant. The trial confirmed that significant savings in acid and lime can be achieved under plant conditions. Plant operations also demonstrated improved redox potential control was possible using Caro's Acid.

In 1972, metallurgical testwork on Renison ore indicated a significant proportion of low specific gravity, tin-barren material ideally suited to heavy medium separation (HMS). Further technical and financial studies provided adequate economic justification and in December 1974 the Renison HMS plant was cannissioned. Initial operations were interrupted by the imposition of tin production quotas for three months in 1976; they were also beset with difficulties particularly with regard to mechanical wear. During the first two operating years much develognent work was carried out including installation of a pyrrhotite flotation bank in the medium recovery circuit, investigations into various wear-resistant materials and the use of atanised rather than milled ferro-silicon. By 1977/78 financial year satisfactory performance had been achieved and since then the average floats rejection has been 18.8% of the total ore treated with an associated tin loss of 2.96%. Developnent has nevertheless continued during the last three years, principal modifications being the installation of larger aperture desliming screens and improvements to the overdense cyclone circuit.

Portland cement is a finely ground mineral powder obtained by intergrinding a mixture of 95 parts of clinker and five parts of gypsum. It is the generic name for hydraulic cement a man made product which hardens in the presence of water. Today's cement started formally with a patent granted in 1824 to Joseph Aspdin, a Leeds bricklayer. He called his patented cement 'Portland' because it resembled a gray brown stone quarried on the Isle of Portland off the coast of England. The first cement to be made in the southern hemisphere is accredited to Nathaniel Wilson, a pioneer farmer who with his brother John began experimenting in 1874 with the limestone on their property near Warkworth. In 1884 they produced the first Portland Cement to be made in this part of the world.

In May 1977 a new dam was commissioned for disposal of 600,000 metric tonnes/year of tailings. Design basis, costs and construction problems are described. Problems arose, assoc- iated with lack of experience in building such a dam "from scratch". Solutions are described land costs given.

Addition of sodium nitrite-borax, sodium hydroxide, sodIUm carbonate, lime, or sodium silicate reduced wear of forged steel balls and cast iron slugs in wet grinding a complex zinc-lead-copper sulphide ore in laboratory ball mills. Maximum wear reductions were 27 per cent (forged steel balls) and 33 per cent (cast iron slugs) with sodium hydroxide and nitrite-borax additives respectively.Potential measurements of balls and slugs during grinding, and analysis of the data in terms of corrosion theory demonstrated that corrosive wear had been reduced or prevented by these additives. Actual per cent wear reductions were not equated to the rate of corrosive wear because of the undefined interdependence between abrasion and corrosion in wear processes. The investigation verifies that in laboratory ball mills corrosion is significant in the wear of grinding media and wear can be reduced by corrosion inhibition and pH adjustment.

The Split Rock low grade copper prospect was discovered in 1969 by Cyprus Mines Corporation using stream geochemistry. Cyprus "Imes carried out geochemical and geophysical investigations, geological mapping, and percussion and diamond drilling, and concluded that the grade of mineralisation was too low (0.1% copper) to be of interest. In the present study, the geology was remapped and very substantial differences from the previous observations are recorded. (lineraliced acid dykes in a 1 000 foot hole drilled by Cyprus Mines had a total inter- section of almost 300 feet with an average crade of 0.4% copper. Surrounding drill holes at distances of 500 feet did not intersect +hese dykes. This group of drill holes occupies a small part of an area about 2 km by 1 km which was affected by intense quartz sericite pyrite alteration along many fractures with an associated soil copper anomaly. It may be that the quartz sericite alteraiion with feeble copper mineralisation represents hydrothermal alteration emanating `rom a mineralised intrusion of which the dykes mentioned above are off shoots.

Considerable quantities of dissolved nickel are lost in the waste liquors from the QNPL nickel treatment plant. Cementation, precipitation and ion exchange techniques were investigated to reduce this loss. Ion exchange was the most successful of the procedures studied and a process for recovering nickel from stripped ammoniacal process liquors was developed in the laboratory and scaled up to plant flow volumes. The system developed uses a carboxylic ion exchange resin operated in a completely ammoniacal cycle. The regenerant is itself regenerable using existing plant, thus the only loss is the stoichiometric value of NH4+ required to displace the exchanged cations from the resin. Existing plant sand/anthracite filter beds have been adapted for use as resin columns containing 3 cubic metres of resin capable of treating effluent at a flow rate of 6000 litres/min.

In June/July 1981 Mount Isa Mines Limited was confronted with a crisis situation in the crushing operation of the Lead/Zinc and Copper Concentrators. Three crusher mainframes developed serious cracks in the upper rim area. The type of cracking indicated that major failure of these mainframes could be imminent. Operational crushers could not be sensibly inspected and it was therefore assumed that more than three mainframes were seriously cracked. The crisis was averted as described in the following text.

Mount Isa Mines Limited recently commiss ioned an 800 tph Heavy Medium Preconcentration Plant for lead/zinc/silver ores. The decision to build this plant was made in late 1979 based largely on investigations conducted in the Company's pilot plant on a variety of ore types including Hilton ores, between 1972 and 1978. The paper reviews the historical develop- ment of the pilot plant heavy medium circuit through this period and illustrates the extent to which this work impacted on the final design criteria. This review also includes a description of plant operation, manning levels, process equipment and metallurgical performance Achieved.

Some twelve months of operation at Mount Lyell, using two large diameter ball mills as a two-stage grinding circuit indicated a short- fall in the grinding capability compared with design criteria. Breakage, particularly at coarser sizes, was less efficient than with the previously used grinding circuit comprising a large number of smaller diameter mills. This paper describes both old and new equipment, puts forward the facts as they are presently known, and lists the attempts made to overcome the problem.
